With China's massive investment in robotics, I wonder how long it will be before we see at least partial robotic assembly in their shipyards? A potential future where high quality, absolutely reproducible shipping is churned out with the same ease (and speed) of commercial trucks and buses? Big savings on finished vessels for commercial buyers, and possibly an "almost production line" scale of output for PLA naval assets, especially smaller size vessels.
I read somewhere it’s already here. China’s Cruise ship rooms for thousands of tourists were already being finished with robots. It might be the next cruise ship being constructed, not the last ship.
@@douginorlando6260 Extensive use of robotics have led China from being a major net importer of cars to being THE world's largest EV producer in less than a decade, with BYD now being probably the world's largest "consumer-spec" EV producer. There would appear to be no fundamental reasons why such "economies of extensive automation" cannot be applied to shipping. This would also apply to repair too - obviously of strategic interest and importance in a wartime scenario.

You wouldn’t see it in the shipyard itself. It’s more likely to be used in the factories that provide modules to the yard. Putting ship together requires a lot of internal work that large robots aren’t suitable for, and probably a lot of variation that need to be fixed while been assembled. Modules on the other hand, are much smaller and could take advantage of robots to reduce those variations.

From what I could see in one of the photos you showed of the wake of the ship you can see the exhaust out the back of the mast area, so it doesn't look like it has a water level exhaust, which stands to reason why the mast is blackened.

It looks more like a mini version of the Japanese Mogami Class Frigate than anything else. The Mogami's have relatively low price tag for mass production. It makes perfect sense for China to build this experimental ship first to iron out design issues before mass production begins.

Reading through other comments, I think this needs to be said:
1. This Chinese ship is a proof of concept
2. The visual characteristics being discussed may only be one major differentiator for the project stakeholders
3. The covered concepts don't need to be restricted to the technological domain. They can be of a wide range: economic, industrial, fiscal, manpower, combat, etc. on the tactical, operational, and strategic levels.
We don't know the priorities of this project, so there's no point in dismissing it based on surface-level information. All we know is that the Chinese have decided that the concepts being incorporated into the ship are worthy enough to be proven.

What a beautiful design. Meanwhile US navy DDGX not scheduled til 2032. The new billion dollar frigate Constitution class based on existing FRAMM design from Italy has been delayed due to faulty design changes per Business Insider. Yes you heard correct, they are so incompetent that they tried to change the existing FRAMM design, but instead of finishing the changes before building starts. They started building thinking they can fit the design changes while ship is constructing. LOLOL vs PLAN building experimental ships to test design then fully implementing them.

The previous type 56B corvette was a low cost ship and had separate anti ship missile pods and no VLS. It was designed for anti submarine operations close to China so a VLS system was not required.
This new proto type looks like it is to replace the type 56B and it has a VLS system which extends it operation potential.
Great ship. This will change China naval ships designs in the future to adapt to the modern sea warfare where stealth tech will rule the wave.

But theres also exhaust near the rear of the bridge.

It looks more like an LVO testbed than anything else. No wet deck doors, no mission bay, no actual landing pad or hangar doors for the helo.
It looks like it only has the equipment necessary to sail and test radar returns on common PLAN equipment.
So instead of a radar reflection the size of a ship, its reflection is only the size of a bus or a car? Or even a refrigerator? I don’t get the idea behind stealth for huge ships … once in line of sight of radar, how can it hide? Even if it reduces reflection by 99.9% it’s still big

It present in radar is the same size of hundred of fishing ships near it, difficult to distinguish it from fishing ships around from radar.

Look like a testing ship to test out Visby-class's radar characteristics, but the idea of a stealth ship along with carrier battlegroup seems dumb unless they are working on a stealth version of Type 22 missile boat which makes more sense.

this is a test platform for the "Dreadnaught" 全能舰 concept developed by scientist Ma Weiming , it will be more than 10000 ton , have Rail Gun, strategic Laser and Tactic Laser, numerous VLS which can launch all konds of hypersonic missiles, and can be a command center for Drones. Carriers might become slow moving targets during conflict of great powers, and are only useful against small countries with insufficient missile powers.
Do away with the front Gun and extend the raised platform so the number of VLS cells can be increased to 48 at least. Make sure there is a towed sonar array and dipping sonar as well.
interesting concept. A mini arsenal ship that costs much less than a submarine or destroyer but has at least heavy frigate levels of firepower. It'd have to work as part of a battlegroup though since its sensors wouldn't be able to make full use of all that firepower

The back of the Visby Class Corvette is an over-extended helicopter platform, not very practical.
The USA built those kind of ships 10 years ago and abandoned them because they were too fragile and constantly broke down.

Experimental ships, our style is that the first ship is usually used for experiments to verify some parameters and standards. Generally speaking, a third ship of the same type is the production version.

my primary concern is that getting rid of the CWIS makes it quite vulnerable to swarming drone attack. It also seems to lack any ability to deal with USVs which are proving to be quite a menace in littoral waters.

This applies to the US too btw, but the Russians are the furthest ahead in anti-satellite missiles (which they have 100% shared with the Chinese).

Most reconaisance Satelite was orbiting the earth every 12 or 24 hours. with like at most half an hour of observation time window - Thats the "Delay" of information gathering via satelite

a design very similar to Sweden corvette, which has been prove to be stealthy, for me i prefer a proved design in the stage of ship building instead of some fancy thing like DDG1000, came up with more trouble after enlisted.
however it is actually a experimental ship, the size of the bridge is too small for sealing, from my calculation, a 2200 ton corvette requires more than 8 operater in the bridge, i am not a professional sailor and thats a estimation
i actually prefer put vertical launcher in the middle of hull and put bridge much forward, which is more favorable for operating ships in narrow water, and there will be one less stage on the ship and more stealthy

there is a critical question for peoples navy in the next 20 years, with extended range of our navy, most large combat ship maybe deployed on the ocean, however Japanese navy and US navy are still close to Chinese coastline, even after the final part of Chinese liberation war, the Taiwan.
still need some kind of service ship and a coastline fleet to protect Chinese coastline and keep balance of east Asia, i think this kind of thing along with missile boat fleet and air force can cover this thing

Seems to be a combination of the type 45 of the british for the mast design. The main gun from the zumwalt and the hull design from the modern lcs of the US. Reverse engeneering is not as perfect as the original, though.

022 Corvette replacement?
No, there is another smaller one, only 280 tons displacement, yet carries more arsenal with integrated AESA radar system.
022 is not a corvette. It is a missile boat lol. And 022 is not useful on its own due to limitations in sensory due to tiny size, and lack of area air defense. I would think it might be a good idea to have multiple 022 detached from a cruiser or amphibious assault ship, while operating under the air defense umbrella of the fleet, it can increase targets for the enemies and might sneak a few anti ship missiles in the direction of enemy surface combatants
The CSSC A2000 seems to be a better candidate for that

It’s really silly for any US adversary to build stealth, any large ship will be tracked real-time via satellite. The tracking data can be disseminated to allies on order in any escalation. It might be useful against local enemies such as Vietnam, but even they are now sharing data with the US. I can’t think of any reason to build an actual deployable version of this. It will definitely help them to build better radars and learn how to see better, but useless in combat
So why did the US build the Zumwalt?
stealth makes sense in littoral waters because of the ground clutter and civilian traffic. If the ship looks like a fishing boat on radar most navies are going to have to double check to make sure they aren't shooting an actual fishing boat.

China's nuclear submarines may be lagging behind by more than 10 years, but this is related to China's strategy. They do not need to go to the other side of the earth. China's conventional submarines are very advanced.

Several years ago China built a very large plant to produce nuclear submarines. That should indicate that it considered its technology to be advanced enough to be at least near the level of US. Perhaps based on assistance from Russia.
