Brian Wilson is a genius, considering all the demons he was battling his vision was incredible. Carol Kaye (bassist on Good Vibrations) asked him when does this baseline ever work? In my head, he answered.
Brian's voice in those early Beach Boy hits was epic - his brother Carl's voice was angelic, and Dennis was no slouch. Carl's voice became the groups mainstay when Brian stopped touring.
This is the second time I've watched someone analyse this song, and both times they can't help breaking out in a smile when they hear the harmony singing.
Brian Wilson was actually embarrassed by his falsetto voice. It was wonderful to hear him sing. Perfect harmony with his two brothers Carl and Denis. It was rounded out with his cousin Mike Love and their childhood friend Al Jardine. Absolutely gorgeous harmony that Brian Wilson orchestrated during The Beach Boys musical career.
You're right, he was embarrassed because he thought he sounded like a girl. It wasn't really falsetto though, it was definitely a genuine head voice. He was able to ascend and descend without 'throwing' his voice into the upper register.
You've got to change that to '79. Great stuff through the 70's as well that you need to check out. LA Light Album is about the end of the interesting compositions from the Beach Boys sadly.
Brian was a master of writing harmonies; you really should hear "God Only Knows", and "Good Vibrations". Brian and his brother Carl both had that beautifully textured upper range.
Taking NOTHING away, this isn't actually a live performance. That said, this is one of my favorite songs ever, and they really did sound this good live.
@@pauleichgrun6205 when part of the critique was how "relaxed" they looked id say its pretty relevant and yes BW would sing this spot on in live concerts, this just isnt it :)
It's kinda strange that a vocal coach didn't know the reason that Brian and the boys were so relaxed because they were lip syncing...but they were great live...this just isn't a live performance.
Their harmonies are transcendent. "In My Room", "You Still Believe In Me", "Til I Die", "Time to Get Alone", "Cuddle Up", and "Surf's Up" are among the many that give me chills when I listen. I've been obsessed since I was 2 years old and found my sister's Beach Boys greatest hits LP.
Right at the beginning of the song, when their vocal harmony first hits you, it doesn't get any better. It's harmonic perfection. The whole song. There is harmony in many of their songs, but "Don't Worry Baby" is about as close to perfection as it gets.
The Beach Boys are one of my favourite musical groups of all time. Brian Wison inspires me when it comes to creating beautiful melodies like this song and so many more
One of the things that made the Beach Boys so great was not just the fact of Brian Wilson’s genius but also the fact they grew up together singing and harmonizing.
Regarding this song… Brian wrote this song for Ronnie Spector, of the Ronnettes, but then Phil Spector, her then-husband forbade her from recording it. Recently she has recorded it, and I think it would be interesting to compare the two versions.
Oh, interesting! The band "Foxes and Fossils" did a cover recently and I thought it sounded GREAT with a female lead voice. I'll have to check out the Ronnie Spector recording! (Here's the Foxes and Fossils version: ua-cam.com/video/8HzOQQ32Vsw/v-deo.html ) [EDIT: And WOW! I just ran across this clip of Brian Wilson hearing Ronnie Spector's version for the first time! ua-cam.com/video/9JMdw__a77A/v-deo.html ]
One of the pure genius singer, writer, producers ever. Another great one to listen to is “I Can Hear Music” or “God Only Knows”. It was interesting how the Beatles and Brian Wilson pushed each other in those early years. Pet Sounds was inspired by Brian’s admiration for Rubber Soul which then pushed the Beatles to make Sergeant Pepper. Paul’s daughter said family friends told her that her dad would play, “God Only Knows” over and over saying he wished he had written a love song that good, which is high praise from the guy who co-wrote Yesterday and Michelle.
R M - Paul McCartney wrote "Here, There and Everywhere" in response to Brian's "God Only Knows"... and it (like "God Only Knows") is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Paul has said that "God Only Knows" is the best love song ever made. And Brian told Paul that "Here, There and Everywhere" is his favorite love song. These two amazing singer/song writers, who were born just two days apart, have a great love/respect/appreciation for each other.
I’m also directing you to the Four Seasons, if you’ve never really listened to their harmonies and also their big time arrangements, are incredible. Brian Wilson is what we consider a natural born genius.
One of the things I love about the Beach Boys is how light their voices are. They're just floating through the song. I don't know what the technical term for it is, but it's just beautiful.
Frankie Valli and the four seasons also had great falsettos and harmonies with songs like "Sherry" , "Walk Like a Man", "Big Girls don't cry", "Oh What a night (December 1963), and "Who loves you"
This song is a great introduction to an early classic. I think their all time harmonizing best is Sloop John B, much more intricate and interwoven vocals. From the great Pet Sounds album. You won’t regret. Good Vibrations is also a cut above this classic.
Cut above? Perhaps lyrically, but musically, no way in hell. They are THE quintessential transition group defining the progression from doo wop to straight rock n' roll.
If you wanna do some more Beach Boys reactions make sure to check out; 1. Surfs Up (Home Demo by Brian Wilson) 2. Darlin (Beautiful lead vocals by Carl Wilson) 3. Forever (Dennis Wilson Lead Vocals)
Amazing how they did this - nearly sixty years ago, mind you. Mike on a separate microphone, the rest of the guys (including Brian) around a single mike. And then Brian singing the lead later. It's double-tracked, but that doesn't change the fact that is absolutely perfection. A true classic and one of my personal favorites.
I always think of the Beach Boys harmonies is like a perfectly arranged String section. Sweeping violins with the occasional bow-biting cello/viola. The ensemble effect is an instrument in itself. Brian is a genius.
I enjoyed your analysis of this song as I have been a beach boys fan since the early 1960's but, this video you are watching is one where they were lip syncing to a sound track as all shows like this did in those times. I bring this up only because you mentioned how relaxed Brian looked while singing his high parts. He may have looked like that in the studio for all I know but, none of them were signing here.
They definitely have sung this song live. Look up their live performance of “I Get Around”. Brian is relaxed hitting those high notes just like in this video here.
I have such respect for you, Beth. Your musical taste proves that good music is good music, no matter what era it came from. I grew up with this music (Thank God) and it's assuring to know the music still speaks to many and spans generations. This vocal arrangement is unique to the BB's catalog because brother and drummer) Dennis provides the low bed of harmonies along with his cousin Mike Love. It's a full on 5 voice assault. Good ear!
I think their harmonies worked so well too because they were related. Same with the Everly Brothers. They just blend better since they all have a genetically similar voice.
Beth, a great song choice! Because Boys were the best harmony group ever. Early on they push all the other groups to up their game. Thanks for the peaceful afternoon.
In the Spring of 1964 when I was all of 16 years old, I saw The Beach Boys at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Oregon. That was the first live concert I ever attended. In the Fall of 1971, I saw them again at the old Paramount Theater in Portland. The opening act was a guy no one had ever heard of by the name of Billy Joel.
I found your channel because i saw you'll be talking to my friend Alan from Dicodec. Glad i found it! Love the way your face lit up when Brian came in with that legendary melody. Thank you for sharing your insights on this! I had no idea about the mixed texture things with falsetto and head voice. Still way over my head. But this gives me a whole new appreciation for a song i've heard 1000 times. Just pure nostalgia. I grew up with my dad in a band that covered The Beach Boys all the time, and were always working on the harmonies. Deep emotional connection for me. Also, thanks for the advice on being relaxed. I always struggle with that. But, i'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos!

Yes, and if you do, please use the version released on The SMiLE Sessions in 2011 (4 minutes 15 seconds for reference) since it includes a _fantastic_ harmony part following the bridge which was not included in the originally released version.
Love the fact that in the production of this there is time given to hear drums at the start, guitar later on that just keeps you focused on what is coming next, exquisite harmonies and lead vocal which also given their own space to be heard in all their glory then all elements combining.
Nice observations! I'm a BB fan from day one. In '63 and '64 (age 12 and 13) I was lucky enough to hear the BB's live before Brian quit touring. I remember hearing the older teenagers after the concert say "Did you hear that high voice guy (Brian)? He was amazing!" Their vocals were excellent without monitors or mic'd instruments using the house soundsystem. When they toured Pet Sounds, they were among the first, if not THE first to use a mic'd system and bring strings along in those early days. There are lots of a capella tracks and even some of Brian adding a couple of bars of harmony around that are well worth the time!
For a someone born in 1960 in California this is extreme nostalgia. I literally can't remember a time not hearing the Beach Boys while I was growing up. California has changed dramatically since then, but it was a wonderful point in time.
Along with his other musical qualities , just listen to that voice ! And this the perfect song to hilite it! Pure perfection , one of the best songs/singing ever .
A fun thing to do to any early Beach Boy song, and to realize how great their harmonies work, if you have a good stereo system that truly has a "left/right fader," try turning only to the right or only the left channel on, and listen how awful it sounds in single voice, and then adjust back to the middle mix to see how truly GREAT they sound. And, since most of them were related, you also have that family harmony in there to! What a great band, and a great song!! Next time, Beth, try "Good Vibrations." MASSIVE harmony on a more complex level in that one, for sure!!
Early Beach Boys songs were not in stereo. All of their albums through 1967 and singles through 1968 were in mono (or "Duophonic" fake stereo which was basically just a slight time delay between left and right to create an echo effect). In recent years much of the material has been remastered into true stereo mixes from the original multi-track tapes, but unless you seek that out, by far the majority of 1961-67 Beach Boys music on any physical format today was mixed in mono - same voices (and instruments) in both left and right.
Beautiful. Reminds me of my childhood. Your commentary is very professional and brings a whole new perspective to a sound that filled my background as a young girl.
I was waiting for you to negatively criticize unadulterated greatness. Your comment regarding their immediate energy heightened my appreciation for this group...and, I love your enthusiastic and mirthful appreciation for their performance. You are a joy.
Moving harmonies always. While I’m taken with great vocal harmonies, it’s the blending and timbre of the voices that always made this group so outstanding. Harmonies created by people with shared DNA are almost always “next level”. Brian, Carl and Dennis were brothers and I believe Mike Love is a cousin. Think of some of the greatest harmony groups such as Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, the Osmonds, the Ames Brothers, the Mills Bothers, the Andrews Sisters, the Everly Brothers and so on. Voice blending like that make it very difficult to pick out parts.
This is the one that opens the portal to heaven. The pang of longing is so present in this song. Brian Wilson was a mystic as much as he was a musician.
My votes for the 2 best songs featuring harmonies are: The Beatles - Because and The Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby (I think The Beach Boys are the only ones that could out-harmonize The Beatles, having 4 singers vs 3)
Beth, have you ever heard of The Roches? Female singing group whose voices blended so beautifully. I believe they were three sisters from New York. First heard them live at a concert in Berkeley in the 70s and I'll never forget how incredible they sounded!
Brian adored The Four Freshmen. He listened to them over and over again, breaking down their harmonies. It’s no wonder he constructed such wonderful harmonies of his own.
My son was majoring in music in college and chose to write one paper on his favorite composer Brian Wilson. His professor was unimpressed until my son pointed out the sheer brilliance of his compositions, which his professor finally agreed with and a new Beach Boys fan was born
One of my absolute best Beach Boys songs. It really touches the heart. And yes Brian Wilson was one of my favorites. It was sad when he decided to leave the group and just stay home and right harmonies. I think everybody was used to his high-pitched voice.
it was interesting to hear your comment on breath control, try the hollies 'air that i breathe'. As for it being effortless, the amount of pressure put on the band by Brian Wilson's father and later by Brian himself in the strive for perfection is famous.
You know, I still have the original 45 of this song, on Capitol Records. I love it as much today as I did as a teenager when I got it back then. And it has influenced my own musical paths, my own songwriting, and my love of harmonies. Nice job on your analysis. You've nailed it! Thank you!
Hey Beth! The two groups that have the most amazing and integrate harmonies ever are the Beach Boys and the Bee Gees. Growing up on different continents, they both had the same structural foundation: Both groups were family, and they grew up singing together. Both groups had a negative backlash during their careers: The Beach Boys when the popular "beach sound" of the early 60s fell out of favor to the English Invasion, and the Bee Gees when the "disco" sound crashed and burned. Both groups had incredible writing: Brian Wilson, the recognized creative genius behind the Beach Boys sound, and the Bee Gees, who when disco was shunned, wrote hit after hit (unbeknownst to the public) for many other artists. Both groups recovered and had their own renewed surge in popularity in later years as their own unique sounds were found to be the soundtracks of millions of Baby Boomers younger years. I absolutely love to see young people watch and listen to both of these groups.
Yeah the chill posture could be because they were lip-syncing, but the reality is they did a lot of the studio vocals "live" with everyone singing around a single mike in a single take. That requires some great vocalists.
Any TV performance from the 60’s should be considered a lip sync till proven other wise. There are many that are not, the Righteous Brothers performance from the Andy Williams show that has been making the rounds on UA-cam for example. Still great to see The Beach Boys perform. As an aside the plate reverb on those vocals is amazing.
Thanks for saying this. True that this is lip synced. It doesn’t change the commentary about the singing but it does make the commentary inaccurate about the calm of the “live” performance. Doesn’t change the beauty of the arrangement and performance. I would have preferred Warmth of the Sun…. But that’s just me.

All I Wanna Do by The Beach Boys is an amazing track - the backing vocals are stunning. Hope you enjoy if you listen, saludos
Yes!!!👍
I am so glad you did this song. Its one of my favourites from the Beach Boys and the vocals of Brian Wilson during those days are remarkable.
Beautiful. Reminds me of my childhood. Your commentary is very professional and brings a whole new perspective to a sound that filled my background as a young girl.
I was waiting for you to negatively criticize unadulterated greatness. Your comment regarding their immediate energy heightened my appreciation for this group...and, I love your enthusiastic and mirthful
appreciation for their performance. You are a joy.
Brian's falsetto was unmatched. Al's son Matt now takes his parts and does a good jobs but no one will ever sound like a young Brian Wilson.
Bravura analysis. Thoughtful technical interpretation without being stuffy or pedantic. Nicely done. Kudos and compliments, Beth.
My favorite Beach Boys song, and maybe one of my all time fave songs.
This has always been one of my favourite Beach Boys songs.
Brian is an angel.
And Beth is adorable!
Brian wrote this song for Ronnie Spektor (The Ronnetes) but Phil Spektor rejected it and thus they recorded it. Years later she got to sing it.
It's so nice to see someone like this young girl who appreciates artists like The Beach Boys who came & went before she was born.
You forgot to include the Jacksons
I made an Amazon Music playlist for these boys this morning but I forgot to add this song. Added! Thanks.
This is the one that opens the portal to heaven. The pang of longing is so present in this song. Brian Wilson was a mystic as much as he was a musician.
Brian Wilson was a genius when he put these songs and their voices together. He is the musical genius behind most if not all their songs.
I appreciate that your intro is not a generic one that is used for every reaction. 🙂❤️
Brian Wilson is notoriously. a perfectionist. That is why they were so good.
Beach Boys #1 band ever, been a fan since 1964 (i grew up in so calif) and they rocked the surf sound culture of the day! Their music will live on!
The best vocals bar none in the last 65 years
My votes for the 2 best songs featuring harmonies are: The Beatles - Because and The Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby (I think The Beach Boys are the only ones that could out-harmonize The Beatles, having 4 singers vs 3)
My favorite Beach Boys song and one of my favorite songs of all time.
There is no other like this group...none.
This is a studio recording, not a live performance. Could be the reason they look so relaxed.
so good to see you enjoying this remarkable group of talented singers/musicians
Beth, have you ever heard of The Roches? Female singing group whose voices blended so beautifully. I believe they were three sisters from New York. First heard them live at a concert in Berkeley in the 70s and I'll never forget how incredible they sounded!
You can't go by how relaxed they are on that the video, they are not signing live
That is the record playing :)
There are some live performances outthere and they're still chilly willy when singing, especally Brian Wilson who as the one with the good vocals.
Brian adored The Four Freshmen. He listened to them over and over again, breaking down their harmonies. It’s no wonder he constructed such wonderful harmonies of his own.
Brian Wilson is a genius! Fantastic song!
My son was majoring in music in college and chose to write one paper on his favorite composer Brian Wilson. His professor was unimpressed until my son pointed out the sheer brilliance of his compositions, which his professor finally agreed with and a new Beach Boys fan was born
Simply sensational! Great analysis...lovely woman with silky smooth voice that would blend beautifully with The Beach Boys😎
One of my absolute best Beach Boys songs. It really touches the heart. And yes Brian Wilson was one of my favorites. It was sad when he decided to leave the group and just stay home and right harmonies. I think everybody was used to his high-pitched voice.
Brian Wilson's falsetto is in a class by itself !
it was interesting to hear your comment on breath control, try the hollies 'air that i breathe'.
My favorite band. Please react to more beach boys songs
Brian Wilson is a genius
This song always has given me such a warm comforting feeling!
Love it. Glad you're hearing this stuff. Timeless.
It’s not a live performance. Brian would’ve sounded very similar live, though.
Yeah the chill posture could be because they were lip-syncing, but the reality is they did a lot of the studio vocals "live" with everyone singing around a single mike in a single take. That requires some great vocalists.
@@stpnwlf9 Totally agree
Any TV performance from the 60’s should be considered a lip sync till proven other wise. There are many that are not, the Righteous Brothers performance from the Andy Williams show that has been making the rounds on UA-cam for example. Still great to see The Beach Boys perform.
As an aside the plate reverb on those vocals is amazing.
This looks like an Ed Sullivan show video.
3 seconds of the BB & I'm @ the New Hampshire seacoast in mid Summer...
Even on a cold November morning 😎
Brian Wilson a pure musical 🎹 genius ! 🙂
Hampton Beach!!!
Cross the border and go to Salisbury beach!
@@brianlandry6956 Well really North Beach, we had a summer group that hung out at the 2nd street opening... great times !
Would definitely hit the Casino every night...
I miss the old 70's era pinball tables ✌😎
We still listen to this kind of music every Sunday here in the Philippines. We love new music as well as good old music.
Love the energy fantastic attitude and the beautiful look of this woman!
