You may disagree with Oliver Stone's political views, however, in Born On The 4th Of July, he elicited a career best performance from Tom Cruise, and he dramatized the horror of war and the degrading and demoralizing treatment of Vetrans like Kovic, who believed in serving their Country, came home maimed or paralyzed, and were marginalized or treated poorly at hospitals during the Vietnam era. He richly deserved this Oscar.

There were also a lot of Vietnam Civilian Civilians and even Soldiers who were hurt and even killed because of a War that the U.S. should not have been in.

Yes, Stone was in Scorcese's film class.
Hassaan Mirza and before your mentor
Cruise should have got an Oscar for his performance in it. It was the highlight of his career. He was outstanding.
His best acting ever.
He might have if he was not up against Daniel Day Lewis.
Agreed! 👍
Daniel Day-Lewis was otherworldly in _My Left Foot_
Cruise was great. Any other year he wins. But DDL in my left foot was other worldly.
I think De niro was filming Awakenings during this

He was probably happy to do it; Oliver was his student in a film class he taught and I'm sure he was over the moon to see this happen.
