7 years late sorry, but that happens because as men we usually shave with cartridge razors and they're so uncomfortable that you feel like you don't want to shave 1 second longer with it.
I was trying to share my passion of the wet shave with my dad and gave him my sandalwood cream but I missed the scent so much I just ordered more last week. I wanted to try the soap but maybe next time! :)
Awesome soap/cream and scent, anyone who doesn't like it is plain crazy. Their aftershave gel is also really nice and worth a try, I combine the two with the cologne which is really decent at around £20 for 100ml over here.
Another great review Nick. Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving soap is a great product; but what I found useful in your video is the use of a boar head brush rather than my usual badger hair one. I live just 5 minutes from their shop on Jermyn Street St James's and their shop is great to browse because the soap comes in some nice flavours but I always buy from Amazon which is much cheaper.
After seeing this video and the lather review of the same I set about replicating your process for mine. I have been trying to make the lather in the cup I have, with varying degrees of success. Basically the lather is no where near yours. I used your process this morning and I see it's gonna be a work in progress. I think my brush is hydrated enough when I initially start to work the soap into the brush. I did try creating the lather using in my hand (with a little extra water in my hand). It was doable, but, again, no where near what you get.
I thought this was a tallow based shaving soap, but I see that it is not, which surprised me.You spoke about the slickness of this soap. How about the cushioning? Also, I like a post shave that seems to feel like I have put on lotion. Anything similar to that?
Hi Nick! Looks like a great soap! Two questions this shave demo brings to mind: 1) What is your water like at your new diggs? Soft, hard? 2) How do you rate the TOBS shave soap compared to Synergy and Barrister & Mann?
Nick, I am new to this in that I just recently received as a gift from my son the TOBS sandalwood cream and pre-oil lubricant and brush (I do not know the size of the brush other than that it is badger hair). Prior to getting the TOBS, I was using the drug store variety of canister shaving creams which, i assume, you must regard as anathema. I have several questions I hope you can answer. Do I apply the TOBS pre-oil lubricant onto a dry face or should I first dampen the face? How much of this oil need I apply? I like the TOBS sandalwood cream (5.3 oz jar). But I noticed you say in another one of your vids that you prefer the soap over the cream. What makes you say that? What is the difference between the various size brushes (i.e., what causes you to prefer one over the other)?. How long should you hydrate the brush before you start using it? Finally (and I hope you do not think ill of me otherwise), I use the Schick Extreme 3 disposable razor. Using the kind of razor you use would cause me to bleed which would be a problem for me. I was nevertheless willing to try the kind of razor you use until I watched one of your vids and saw that you had managed to cut your face in a few places. Regarding the kind of disposalbe razor blade I use, when do I know that it is time to throw out one and start using a new disposable razor? Are there disposable razor blades that you recommend and if so, why? BTW, I found all of your vids very informative. You do a great job in explaining this stuff. thanks.
Hey Nick, posted a while back that I was startin the wet shave tradition. Still keepin up with all the videos and came across this one. I've never tried a shaving cream and was thinking about the TOBS. Do you think you would get more shaves out of the 3.5 oz puck, or the 5.3 oz bow of cream. they are the same price but I know you may have more insight on that. Thanks, and keep up the great videos!
So I ended up getting my hands on an adjustable, haven't done an against-the-grain pass but for my normal shaves it's been a bit smoother than my 37C. How would you rank this shaving soap in comparison to all the other soaps you've tested?
I just got the cream in the mail today, and I don't know if I got a defect, or not. I don't small any sandalwood at all, it smells like a bar of Ivory soap......?
I liked the TOBS soap, but I really didn't care for the sandalwood smell. I'm not sure if it was just my puck, but it has more of a soapy, almost Lysol kind of scent. Do you find my scent description to be accurate? I really like the musky scent of Edwin Jagger and I like the spicy scent of Art of Shaving--I really don't like the taste, though.
Hey Nick, I'm new to wet shaving and purchased this soap this past christmas. I'm experiencing what I think is a lather issue. I have enough for the first pass, but on the second pass it just doesn't seem like there's enough in the brush and not producing a thick lather like on the first pass. The lather on the second pass also seems to dry up on my face sometimes. I usually load the brush for literally a minute, add a few drops of water and then face lather. Any tips please?
+Shawn Zaman Hey! Do you perhaps use a boar brush? If so, just have some patience, over time your lather will become better. Otherwise, try using the dry brush technique to a wet(and warm) bowl then slowly add water so you have a bit more control.( I initially had the same problem with this particular soap) Cheers.
I use a boar brush. So I do about 5 dry swirls. But you will probably require 15-20 if using a badger, remember to use light strokes and not press down.
Hey Nick. I know you are getting your new den established but I have noticed since the move your camera has been struggling with maintaining the brightness. It has become very distracting, to me. Maybe it's just an angle thing. I just thought you should know. Keep up the great work. Thanks.
nick shaves A couple things might help the lighting situation in your bathroom. First, an easy fix would be trying a white or light grey shirt. The camera adjusts to the amount of white light coming at it so every time your move your torso a different amount of the white walls are exposed giving your lens the impression that the light is changing. Second, you could experiment with placing a lamp somewhere in the room off camera to increase the amount of light reflecting off the walls to give your lens more white light.
I really appreciate you doing all these soap reviews! If it was not for you TSE, Geofatboy and Busta. I would waste a lot of time money and enjoyment.....
Got this a little while ago and had kind of a reaction to it I thought, but when I lathered up in my hand on yesterdays shave I didn`t get irritated. So maybe I have a sensitivity to badger? Anyway, I like the soap, it lathers up pretty easily, a little thick for me, but adding a bit more water fixes that for me. I think it smell very soapy, like "normal soap`y", but if I don`t feel like smelling like a bar of soap, I can always go with the proraso ecalyptus hehe.. It would be nice with a shaving soap with that same smell and skin feel, only in puck form... Think I`m gonna look for that right now! :)
hi nick! nice new bathroom ^^ do you have ever heard of J&D Bacon shaving cream? the concept is very funny, it's a shaving cream with a scent of bacon ! i used it a few times and it provides me a wonderful shave... but the scent is so special
Lame. You do NOT need and shouldn't use that much lather. Just enough to coat the skin to help the razor move easier over the skin and not cut it. Any more than that is a waste of money. So is buying those fancy overpriced shaving soaps. Dove bath soap, or even Ivory bar soap work just as well as any shaving-specific soap. Spend that money on a good razor/blade and you'll only have to shave once per session. What's wrong with you kids today? Wasteful!
Why bash someone for spending their money where they want to. If someone enjoys different soaps and things why put them down for it. It’s not your money or your life. I’m sure you spend money on something that someone else would think is wasteful and useless.
@@MichaelBlocksom The bash is for urging people to be wasteful, not enjoying a decent shave. Would you say the scent of the soap is as much overpowering as the cream? Because after two passes using the cream it tends to irritate my skin.
Which would you say you prefer for performance ? Taylor of old bond street sandalwood soap or cream?
Hi
Question. I want to buy this soap and I was wondering... Does the Sandalwood smells like the Old Spice classic aftershave ?
Thanks

Really a nice soap scent, slickness, longevity wise!
+Nikos Pap Does it come with a wooden bowl? Nick doesn't make clear of that.
+Ray Liotta It comes with a nice tweak wooden bowl (plus 10 bucks give and take) and of course as a refill as well, like the one Nick shows.
Nikos Pap That's great!
What's the difference between the regular sandalwood and the herbal sandalwood you're using there?
Would aftershave cover up the sandalwood scent?
Just use the Tobs sandalwood aftershave.

Have you tried the Mr Taylor fragrance for TOBS?

if you havent fixed your problem yet maybe you should get a shaving cream and bowl lather, thats what I do, its really easy!
