The Captain’s Choice logo is what’s called a “Compass Rose” that has long been used on compass faces, maps, and nautical charts. On maps and charts it is used to show the orientation of the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west). Does kinda look like a ship’s wheel, I’ll give you that.
If you were wondering-I just got this off Wikipedia: A ship's wheel or boat's wheel is a device used aboard a water vessel to steer that vessel and control its course. Together with the rest of the steering mechanism, it forms part of the helm.
I got a bowl for my dopp kit. It's a water/food dish for a cat. Stainless steel with a rubber bottom. It is actually an awesome bowl, too small for my daily use, but the perfect travel bowl for me.
I use a 16 oz cobalt blue glass soup/coffee mug my mother bought me at ShopKo when I first started shaving in the late 90s. It's the perfect diameter for a puck of Williams shaving soap. I recently started going clean-shaven again for them first time in years and like an old friend, it was under the sink waiting for me.
I load my brush with Proraso soap and use an Old Spice mug to build the lather. The ridges in the bottom help build the lather. I have about 40 Old Spice mugs so I have lots to chose from!😊
I’m just getting into “sophisticated” shaving. yes, great tip; I thought you were going to say put a rubber band around the bowl..,seems ceramic bowl might get slippery when wet.
I shave when I take a bath in my walk-in tub, and because of that I have to use a plastic/rubber shave bowl. I have a couple of bowls, one of them is a Marvy shave bowl.
This is an awesome video! Appreciate it. I really enjoyed hearing about non-breakable bowls, and the brush handle clearance. Big things for me! Thanks Geo.
Wow that's the motherload of bowls! I just use a small wooden bowl, fits nicely in the palm of my hand and won't break if I drop it (and I did, a couple of times lol)
I use a cup that has a spout that you can fill with hot water that keeps your lather warm and use a mini cheese grater to load up the soap n mix with a brush. My cup has raised edges along the inside to work air into the lather. Best cup I've ever used. Lol.
Hi Geo- Great lather bowl overview; thank you! The SN Chicago Artisan bowl is beautiful, but I am going with the SN Palm Bumpy bowl, as I have broken too many ceramic bowls over the years! I hope you have a great weekend. Take good care and be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, Geo!
Nice video as always. Educational. I also have an Old Spice mug. I got mine in 85 with soap and a brush. I served in the US Navy Submarine service and that's what we had to use to shave. Aerosols are an atmosphere contaminate. Some guys used electrics. I didnt. I still use it from time to time. I've got some William's in it now. Thanks for what you do.
That hammered copper one and the Shave Nation Artisan are both really cool. Personally I use a no name brand bowl similar to the Proraso apothecary bowl and really like it. I usually end up with damp hands after applying pre shave and holding onto a bowl with no handle poses problems for me. The apothecary style handle allows me to wrap my hand around the bowl with the handle between my ring and middle fingers. Works well with wet hands.
The Captain’s-Choice-style bowl is my favorite for generating and then accessing the lather. I cheaped out and bought a $15 import, as it was my first bowl. Love it.
At Christmas and Easter Ferraro Roche produce a giant chocolate which is in a plastic container that is in two halves. I use one half as a shaving bowl. It has bumps in it and is a perfect size.
What would some good recommendations be for a Bar Mitzvah shaving set gift? In other words, what would be a good starter setup (razor, blades, brush, etc) to gift a teenage boy? Love the videos as always! Thanks Geo!
Merkur 34c razor, Fendrihan or Simpson synthetic brush, probably that Indestructibowl, and some Gillette Wilkinson Sword blades in the saloon pack (blue, orange, white w/yellow banner). You could also get a blade bank for disposing of his used sharps, and a stand for the razor and brush.
I love videos like these and I love your channel/videos my man! Detailed and enthusiastic with answers to any question. My favorite part about any video you have is that you are so excited and you can tell the passion and love you have for this stuff. I try and carry that same energy with my reviews man!
The mug with the gentleman on it with bridge & whole, in Australia we call the bridge a stash { Moustache } Dam it froth off the stash and beard. Hopefully helpful. Dave
Incredible to see such a large selection of shaving bowls. I certainly have enjoyed my sandstone Shave Nation bowl. Looks great in the bathroom. Really nice to see the Old Spice mug. I remember my granddad using that one. Take care and have a great weekend from Rockwall, TX.
I have a porcelain or ceramic col. conk i use. I get my puck wet then microwave it so it melts and conforms to the mug. I just dont like how my brush bangs the sides. Im gonna get either a parker or something thats smaller. I enjoy watching your vids man thanks.
@geofatboy Mr.Geofatboy, have you ever made a video about how it's made shave nation shaving bowls like a ceramic bowls for example? If you haven't, can you make a video about it, please?
When I broke my last Captains Choice bowl I vowed to never buy ceramic again. I found a plastic Timeless bowl and that is by far the best bowl I have ever owned for lathering creams.
Tabac for example as Mirchells Wool fat sell their bowls for about $20 without the soap. I think it is ridiculous. So I agree not to use ceramic in case of accidents.
Geo👍💈👍💈 I always use a bowl to lather, no time restraints on me. Also face later as well, but a bowl is used to get the saturation point perfect, hydrating the soap or cream perfectly is satisfying. Great video showing the line up at Shave Nation. I still gotta get the green Chicago SN bowl, it's on the list. Thanks. Enjoy!
Thank you so much for all of your videos! I have two sons and have purchased a number of straight razors, sharpening stones, and leather strops. Now I'm about to purchase brushes and bowls. I believe we're heading into WW3/Great Depression territory and I want my boys' shaving needs to be set for a lifetime. It's one less thing to worry about. Next, I move on to recipes for DIY shaving soaps or lotions or whatever can be made at home to do the job.
Geo you know what’s awesome besides you always having great videos. You’ve been doing videos for such a long time from like 15 years (guesstimate) you can see you aging. But you are aging very well sir. Guess taking care of your skin Plays a huge role
Hey Geo, thanks for the education on all those shaving bowls. BTW, that steering wheel thing on the Captain’s Choice bowl is a compass! More importantly when do anticipate getting the Shave Nation Palm Bowl Bumpy Indestructible back in stocks? Thanks, Wally B.
I've been thinking about ordering a new bowl so of course this video pops right up. I love my Parker but the clang clang is getting a little old. I'm leaning toward the Shave Nation indestructible. Looks sharp, nice grooves for lather, and no worries if it gets away from me. Can I request one that Geo has run over with a truck? lol
The Fine Accoutrements shaving soap pucks fit perfectly inside the green Prorasso Professional Shaving Mugs. In case anybody needs to know that. 😉 The ribs on the side of the mug hold the puck tight in place. If you happen to have have the Fine Accoutrements “Green” Vetiver shaving soap, it’s like a perfect storm of shaving lather goodness. 😂
I love your videos. They are informational and you are great to listen to. What about women? I am thinking if the bowl is larger it would be difficult to hold, especially by a young lady's hand.
Great video,,, quite educational. I have the Simpson traditional scuttle and the Marvy Green Rubber Mug... Any chance of a review of the Marvy? There's very little out there about it.
Loool...I got a nice shaving brush as a gift, so now I am looking for a nice shaving bowl... so I look on UA-cam and it is unbelievable... you posted this video 41 minutes ago? Thanks for that Geo... 😅
Hi there Geo ! I have got an idea about redesigning your company's shaving bowl . I have contacted you from your website mail, referring my idea ! Take care and keep those videos coming! 💈👍
I'm new to wet shaving.....Last Christmas I got a tub of Nivea man protect & care shaving cream.....I have bean just using my hand's to apply it to my face.....I have been looking into different Silvertip Badger hair shaving brushes....I'm thinking of getting Parker Faux Horn Handle Silvertip Badger Shaving Brush and Stand.....I don't know what would be better a Parker shaving mug or some type of ceramic shaving Bowl that will work best for my shaving cream
I wonder how many bowls lost their lives when Geo wants to know if they are breakable...
That is a very valid question. I have seen Geo slam a few of those bowls like they were a hockey puck in one of his clips.
🤔
Here's one that didn't break! ua-cam.com/video/n_jMptO2E1s/v-deo.html
Geo, thank you so much for caring about us men, we can't begin to convey to you how much your goodwill means to us. You are a treasure.
Sweet! Thank you for mentioning that and your kind words are greatly appreciated.
I literally learnt to shave from this man.
Great info! Thanks for sharing Merrill
This video is the mothership of shaving mugs. Awesome!
Love it!
If you were wondering-I just got this off Wikipedia: A ship's wheel or boat's wheel is a device used aboard a water vessel to steer that vessel and control its course. Together with the rest of the steering mechanism, it forms part of the helm.
I’ve watched your videos for years. They are fantastic. There’s plenty to learn. You can tell you love shaving.
I got a bowl for my dopp kit. It's a water/food dish for a cat. Stainless steel with a rubber bottom. It is actually an awesome bowl, too small for my daily use, but the perfect travel bowl for me.
Sounds great! Enjoy!

I like lathering on the face because I feel relaxed and plus the stubbles gets soft while swirling
You can still experience that with a bowl. But we do what we like best. Enjoy!
I have tried many mugs and the Proraso Mug is my go to favorite. It is lite, easy to hold and works great.
Good to know! Thanks for sharing
Mr. Geofatboy, that was one (of many) outstanding video. I think I'll watch it again before choosing.
I load my brush with Proraso soap and use an Old Spice mug to build the lather. The ridges in the bottom help build the lather. I have about 40 Old Spice mugs so I have lots to chose from!😊
Do all the Old Spice bowls have bottom ridges?
Ceramic chili bowls, cereal bowls, or ramekins are sometimes perfect. Keep your eyes peeled for them when shopping.
So true!
Quick tip: if your bowl is to small and you have a rubber band, put the rubber band around your brush and use it as bumper/ buffer.
Nice tip! That way you don't wake up the kids in the next room 👍
I’m just getting into “sophisticated” shaving. yes, great tip; I thought you were going to say put a rubber band around the bowl..,seems ceramic bowl might get slippery when wet.
I have the Goodfellas Smile Hemlok bowl, cannot possibly recommend it enough. Really big, really stylish, won't break, and provides a great lather.
That smile. Haha it always looks like someone is behind the camera trying to make you laugh hahaha. Love your channel. Love the store.
Still love my schwarzweisskeramik scuttle. Thing is massive but so good
Agreed.
T
Just picked up a scuttle, I’m excited to give it a go. I hope warming the lather will help with an even closer shave 👍🏻
I shave when I take a bath in my walk-in tub, and because of that I have to use a plastic/rubber shave bowl. I have a couple of bowls, one of them is a Marvy shave bowl.
If it works for you-It's all good!
This is an awesome video! Appreciate it. I really enjoyed hearing about non-breakable bowls, and the brush handle clearance. Big things for me! Thanks Geo.
Thanks Michael! Glad you gained some knowledge from it. A lot of unpacking involved in this one!
Have you ever considered using macha tea bowls? They have gentle ridges and are very beautiful.
Not exactly what they look like but I'm thinking they may be too small.
Wow that's the motherload of bowls!
I just use a small wooden bowl, fits nicely in the palm of my hand and won't break if I drop it (and I did, a couple of times lol)
my fave was the red bumpy shave nation one.
Ordered one yesterday from you and I am STOKED to get it because it looks like the best bowl in the biz!
Hope you like it! Thanks!
I found and use a Salsa Bowl I found at Walmart, $2 and works like a champ
I use a cup that has a spout that you can fill with hot water that keeps your lather warm and use a mini cheese grater to load up the soap n mix with a brush. My cup has raised edges along the inside to work air into the lather. Best cup I've ever used. Lol.
MMmmmmm, Warn Lather... Sounds nice!
I always find myself watching your videos again and again even though i watched almost all of them.
love love love my Shave Nation lather bowl !
Thanks David!

Hi Jeff-Thanks for sharing you (underwater) experience! and the info on the harmful aerosol shaving creams.
Hey bubble head. I got mine in 85 also.
The artisan and horn look really neat, actually they all are neat. Might have to add another one to my collection.
Sounds good Dan!
That hammered copper one and the Shave Nation Artisan are both really cool.

Todo un buen Master de la afeitada! Aprendí a afeitarme viendo tus tutoríales! 😎🇲🇽Saludos!buenos videos
The Georgetown Pottery G20 is an amazing scuddle.
I always employ a bowl, and another for the soap!🤣🤣
Employ-I see what you did there. Very nice!
The Captain’s-Choice-style bowl is my favorite for generating and then accessing the lather. I cheaped out and bought a $15 import, as it was my first bowl. Love it.

Hi from Turkey 🤘
Hello, and thanks for the video. Are you going to offer the metal palm bowl with bumps again?
working on it!
The mug with the gentleman on it with bridge & whole, in Australia we call the bridge a stash { Moustache } Dam it froth off the stash and beard.
Hopefully helpful.

Got the green ceramic Shave Nation bowl, going 4+ years strong!
Love it! bit.ly/ShaveNationLatherBowl
Thanks Butch! It took quite a while to unbox all those bowls for this demonstration!
Awesome 👍🏾
Thank you! Cheers!
Brilliant video George. All the best.
Any idea when the artisan Chicago bowls will be back? I’d love to get my hands on one
I simply went to the 99¢ store and got a Libby Crisa Bowl. Actually, I splurged and got 2 of them since they're breakable.
Always good to have a backup plan!
I have a porcelain or ceramic col. conk i use. I get my puck wet then microwave it so it melts and conforms to the mug. I just dont like how my brush bangs the sides. Im gonna get either a parker or something thats smaller. I enjoy watching your vids man thanks.
Would love a shaving video with that scuttle mug which you showed near the end.
@geofatboy Mr.Geofatboy, have you ever made a video about how it's made shave nation shaving bowls like a ceramic bowls for example? If you haven't, can you make a video about it, please?

Geo when are you going to get more Chicago artisan bowls in again? I’m still using a cereal bowl! 🇨🇦
Working on that...
That "boat wheel" reminds me of a compass rose. N-E-W-S compass points. The bumpy bowl looks interesting!
I think the best looking one was a hand made one from Greece. The bowls from there were ok too. Hahaha. Looking forward to your next video. 👍
Thanks Andrew! Those have history to them so it makes them more interesting and appealing to me.
Geo you know what’s awesome besides you always having great videos. You’ve been doing videos for such a long time from like 15 years (guesstimate) you can see you aging. But you are aging very well sir. Guess taking care of your skin Plays a huge role
Thanks Howard-I think single edge shaving is beneficial to the skin. Regenerating new skin growth after every shave!
The godfather of shaving bowls !
I think im going with your marble cup and chicago artisan bowl in the white sand color 😎
brill presentation Geo! great range of bowls!
Thanks Phil!
Well I own an indestructibowl geo so I'll stick with that cheers, great reviews though mate. Stay safe. 💈💈
You are all set Tony. Enjoy!
You know, Geo, I kinda want to see you review the Bevel razor.
Thks mate❤
I have the captain’s choice ceramic, great bowl!! Might need to check out the copper. Great video!!
3:56 That's for Iced-tea to hold back the ice cubes.
As mentioned above, I think it's actually a mustache protector... For my ice tea, that glass would need to be a lot bigger!
Geo enjoyed your various shaving bowl video, saw a couple l really liked will be getting one in the very near future.
Thanks! 👍
Willie from Texas.
Out of curiosity, do you not offer the bumpy bowl anymore? I seem to be struggling to find it.
16:38, Nice, I did not realize these Shave Nation Bowls were unbreakable.
Hey gio will the bumpy indestructible bowl come back?
Hey Geo, thanks for the education on all those shaving bowls. BTW, that steering wheel thing on the Captain’s Choice bowl is a compass!
More importantly when do anticipate getting the Shave Nation Palm Bowl Bumpy Indestructible back in stocks?
Thanks,
Wally B.
Nice Geo, love the variety you have, plenty to choose from when I need another shaving bowl:)
Thanks RK. Afterward I found a few more that I had failed to demo. A lot of unpacking to get them all out!
geofatboy I’m waiting for the SN small bumpy bowl in Cobalt blue when they are back in stock:)
I've been thinking about ordering a new bowl so of course this video pops right up. I love my Parker but the clang clang is getting a little old. I'm leaning toward the Shave Nation indestructible. Looks sharp, nice grooves for lather, and no worries if it gets away from me. Can I request one that Geo has run over with a truck? lol
That weird mug that had the mustached gentleman on it is a mustache cup. It keeps what you drinking from getting on your mustache.
U the man, Geo. U the man!!
The Fine Accoutrements shaving soap pucks fit perfectly inside the green Prorasso Professional Shaving Mugs. Excellent! Thank you for sharing your puck and bowl/mug experience.
I just bought the Proraso green mug, can't wait to use it. do you have a video in which you use that one and the red Proraso sandalwood soap?
I love your videos. They are informational and you are great to listen to. What about women? I am thinking if the bowl is larger it would be difficult to hold, especially by a young lady's hand.
We have some smaller Palm Style bowls that are great for the ladies with smaller hands: shavenation.com/collections/bowls-mugs-cups
Love my Captain's Choice Copper Lather bowl... handcrafted in the USA... well worth the $$!
Really enjoying your content, thanks for reminding us that new fangled contraptions, cartridges, don't deliver the quality of a DE blade, cheers!
Thanks Rod!
Great video,,, quite educational. I have the Simpson traditional scuttle and the Marvy Green Rubber Mug... Any chance of a review of the Marvy? There's very little out there about it.
Thanks Duncan-I know I've used the Marvy in some previous videos.
@@geofatboy You wouldn't happen to know which ones?
Loool...I got a nice shaving brush as a gift, so now I am looking for a nice shaving bowl... so I look on UA-cam and it is unbelievable... you posted this video 41 minutes ago? Thanks for that Geo... 😅
I like my captain's choice bowl. Or, you can look into a Phoenix (PAA) polymer scuttle.
BrettzGaming thanks for the recommendations bro :)
John Murray No problem. I don’t have a PAA scuttle, but people say the polymer holds in heat well, and it won’t shatter like ceramic.
Thanks John-Great timing... Study up and pick one out-Enjoy!
Will you stock a bowl like the one you showed at 18:34? I would totally buy that and would want to buy it from ShaveNation!
It's called a scuttle and we're working on acquiring some!
Hi there Geo ! I have got an idea about redesigning your company's shaving bowl . I have contacted you from your website mail, referring my idea ! Take care and keep those videos coming! 💈👍
I checked it-Thanks so much for your recommendation!
That was fantastic man

Howdy Geo! Great bowl inventory overview. I hope y’all have a banner Christmas sales season!
Take care.
Thanks Bradley-Yes, I'm hoping that as well. All the best to you and yours.
Why do some companies say to apply and massage the cream with a brush directly to your face without using a bowl while others say to use a bowl first?
YMMV-Do whatever you prefer!
What is the Old Spice mug made out of? ⛵
Ceramic
Just wondering where you got the shaving scuttle from the last one you showed?
Hey Geo ! I live in Greece and I would like to ask you a question. Where did you find these two handmade bowls 2 years ago ? Monstiraki square ?
Where can I find the last bowl you showed
Terrific review!
Muito bom meu amigo,
Obrigado por assistir e comentar!
Great video Geo!
I’ve been wanting to grab a new shaving bowl, this gives me a lot to think on.
Those Shavenation bowls with the bumps looks awesome!
Great video! Very informative. Lots of nice lather bowls. But have you tried my 3d printed lather bowl?
I have seen that bowl used by Paulhfilms
A lot of breakabowls Geo 😂🤙🏻
