There's also artwork hidden in the game code showing it was intended to come out in the US, and that the game would be re-drawn with artwork from the Archie Comic/Sat AM cartoon. Mainly Robotnik.
Yup, one thing for sure the animation look smooth as hell and I wish the latter would use this style of animation and expression especially on Sonic 3D Blasts
If anyone is interested in playing the actual arcade version of this and happens to live in the Chicagoland area, Galloping Ghost has an arcade cabinet with this game. Fair warning, the trackball controls still definitely take some getting used to. I can't imagine trying to play this game with a console controller. Definitely a neat novelty though.
@@Aranesque My personal guess would be that Mighty was originally the strong one, Ray was the balanced one, and Sonic was the fast one before something happened like them realizing mid-development that making their flagship character the hardest to play would turn people off from playing it, or something along those lines.
I think the real drunk one was Tomosuke Tsuda when he thought thats what skills these charges are gonna have rather then what makes sense for them to have XD
Yeah. Mighty definitely seems like he should be the one with the most health, but even weirder than that is a Sonic game where *Sonic* isn't the fastest character..?
I haven't played it, but it's disingenuous to complain about the controls when not playing the game with the controls it was designed for. It'd be like saying the controls in SMB3 are bad while playing with a Power Glove. ua-cam.com/video/CyULc7irUWo/v-deo.html
I don't think its like that necessarily. If the reviewer puts it in context and its the most common way the game might be played today its fair to review it in the lens of the situation. Like reviewing an Atari or arcade compilation and saying how a dial game or other unique controled game doesn't work on a thumb stick.
This game was actually planned to be localized and brought over seas. There's even an alternate Robotnik sprite that resembles the SatAM show in the game's assets, but the port was never made because the game didn't do well enough in arcades. It was also going to be ported over in the Sonic Gems Collection for Gamecube, as well as Knuckles Chaotix, but both games were scrapped because of emulation issues. It's funny because you can still look at art from Knuckles Chaotix in Gems Collection, suggesting it was cut late in development. The only source we have for SegaSonic the Hedgehog being ported was an interview.
Fun fact: Sonic was voiced in this game by Takeshi Kusao, better known as Trunks from Dragon Ball Z. Also, SEGA has stated that they're considering releasing a port of this under the SEGA AGES banner, if other Sonic games under the same banner perform well.
Best drunk game? Final Fantasy Tactics. "Aw shit, those sprites are so cute! Look at that chemist hat!" Three hours later: "The sociopolitical climate of Ivalice introduced by the rampant class inequality shows us that - CHOCOBO!"
This has been on my radar for a while but I'm getting a trackball before playing it. I figured the controls would be unusable without one and I'm not sure it's fair to review the game with an input method that clearly screws with character momentum.
Heard about this oddity before, and always wanted to try it. It's crazy to think how many weird arcade games of bigger franchises we never got, like those Street Fighter ticket games or 3D rollercoaster...and WOW Tatio won that lawsuit? How the hell can something as vague as Sonic be protected...did they really think Sonic the Hedgehog would be confused with Sonic Blast Man?
What I love about this channel are these games I never heard of. Never knew this existed and you would think I would have heard some sonic fan mention it before.
I have played this at Galloping Ghost Arcade several times, and I can tell you that having a calibrated trackball doesn't make this any easier since everyones movement is to sensitive. Fun Fact btw, hidden in the arcade games data are sprites of Dr. Robotic modeled after the Sonic Sat. AM version so its speculated that a north american release was planned initially.
Okay so I love Snesdrunk because his vids are so informative and bite sized, and every once in awhile he gets a little chuckle out of me. "Larry the Christmas Hyena" is the first time he's ever gotten a full, out loud, belly laugh from me. That was hilarious.
Arcade games were always so brutal and this is no exception. But I gotta admit this looks so well and I like the sound and how so many things happens all the time.
Well of course it’ll be hard to play without the proper control scheme. I haven’t played the actual arcade version in a few years, but I remember the controls being quite good and responsive. Just sucks that you pretty much have to visit Japan to play it. If you somehow find a cabinet out in the wild, give it a shot.
I find it odd that mighty is the fast guy and not the strong guy considering that when they brought back mighty in Sonic Mania Plus as long as he's in a ball he's impervious to spikes. you think Sonic would be the fast one since he always is the fast one in every Sonic game that includes other characters.
This cabinet was introduced in limited quantities in the US in the 90s, with no translation, I believe. I played it at Adventureland on Long Island and bought some Fleer X-Men trading cards after. Good times.
You sound kinda tired during this review lol. Glad to see coverage of this game, I still love it. Edit: Also, from what I've heard, Taito never sued Sega. The trademarks for both games were in a bit of a race. Instead of fighting Taito's trademark, Sega just used SegaSonic for the arcade games and merchandise.
Sonic Heroes Plus blunder aside Mighty and Ray were actually planned in very early development of Sonic Heroes to be on a team with Metal Sonic. So not only were Mighty and Ray denied making it into the 3D modern era of Sonic but Metal Sonic originally going to team up with them seems to imply he wasn't planned at first to be the main antagonist before that all changed.
I’m guessing the trackball has percussion to adjust speeds and angles that analog joysticks are unable to replicate. And yeah, good look restoring your health without the Ring Bonuses at the end of the levels. They are the only decent amount of health you can gain back.

I think the main appeal to this game for a lot of people including me was that this looked more colorful and cartoony with all the extra animations. This is the sort of stuff we wanted to see in the main Sonic platform games which I was a huge fan of at the time (not so much any more now) But like you said, the player's biggest enemy in this game are the controls of the main characters, and well kind of the gameplay itself. It is not really that interesting of a game. Fortunately for it it is a rather short game if you can get past the various times your character will die.
Actually if i remember correctly one Arcade game did come in na sonic the fighters got 2 ports one on gamecube in a compilation and as a digital hd version for ps3 and 360
This may have been a dream or a hallucination, but I have a memory of playing this at Liseberg in Gothenburg. Not when it was new, but not recently either. I don't think did much more than die repeatedly.
There are also plans to bring this to the Gamecube/PS2 Sonic Gems Collection as well, but never happened as well due to the problems with emulating the trackball control too. Takeshi Kusao (aka CV of Cless Alvein in Tales of Phantasia) is the CV of Sonic in this arcade game, btw. Ray appeared in Sonic Mania Plus. The unreleased SegaSonic Bros is the one made by Fukio Mitsuji (the creator of Bubble Bobble) though.
I played this game about 5 years ago on a trip to Chicago at Galloping Ghost arcade. It is fun, but in most instances you have to pay for every continue, so its kinda loses appeal quick. Galloping Ghost is of course an all you can play for admission price, so it was a bit more fun, but trackball games wear out their welcome on my tender palm quick. Good video.
At some point this was planned to be released in the West. They had special graphics that replaced Eggman with Dr. Robotnik from Sonic SatAM. For whatever reason, they decided against it, even though the thing would have done gangbusters at some sort of family friendly arcade. Chuck E. Cheese or something. Maybe they could have converted it to a ticket collection machine.
I've always been really enamored with this game. I love how frantic it is. Back when I followed the emu scene more closely, this ROM was pretty glitchy and had sound problems, cool to see it's better represented now. Still hoping to play this with an actual trackball someday, maybe on an Atgames Arcade Legends cabinet?
3:30 They could have made a track ball controller and packed it in with the game, but I suppose it would have made the game about 20 dollars more expensive. Still, another Sonic game on the 32X might have sold more systems. Not enough to save it I'm sure, but it would have been a step in the right direction. It was in desperate need of more big name titles.
The reason the controls are so sensitive are BECAUSE of the trackball. If you’ve ever used a trackball to control a character (like in Crystal Castles) it’s surprisingly intuitive & responsive. The problem comes when translating them to a controller. Basically they don’t translate... at all. And for a trackball based game where you control a character’s acceleration/speed and direction all with a flick of a ball, it becomes the death knell for a game. Your issues playing it on emu are a demonstration of that.
I have a trackball, and this game doesn't really control much better than with analog stick. You have to hit really fast the trackball to advance at the pace the game requires, but characters keep either hitting everything and running off ledges, or suddenly hitting the brakes because the trackball movement isn't continuous. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong with the settings, but compared to Marble Madness which is super precise, this games is almost unplayable.
Hey just subscribed. Should have a long time ago. Love the channel. My favorites are your music compilations and the best of each sport series. I’d love to see a best of each sport for the Genesis to match
I remember as a kid having a trackball that functioned as a computer mouse. If they didn't want justify making a peripheral for just one game, they could've sold it as an alternate mouse
This game haunted my childhood, along with Sonic CD, as one of the games I couldn't get hold of. Might have seen it in the wild once in London but man, really wanted to play it. At least I got to Sonic CD eventually
Back in the 90s there was a point where Sega rented out the basement of Hamleys for a while and turned it into an arcade. They had a bunch of weird shit there, like this game, and Time Traveller (the one with the holograms) - and then I never saw any of those games ever again.
This was actually the first sonic game I ever encountered, at a batting cage/pizza place in Burbank, CA... but had no idea it wasn't released in the states... wonder how 'The Batcade' acquired the cabinet
These two were also featured on Sonic Mania DLC as playable characters (also appeared on Sonic Mania Adventures animations) (both of these were great!) I like the concept tho, Robotnik was always goofy but evil. Nowadays he kind of leans more into the goofy side. I would play this, would love to do it with a trackball, but I'm not a millionaire x)
Yup, one thing for sure the animation look smooth as hell and I wish the latter would you use this style of animation and expression especially on Sonic 3D Blasts
My work mate who looks and acts pretty much like Sheldon Cooper can't give up on his trackball, which he considers "far superior than any other mouse". It's just one of many quirks of him, and I can think of the same about who developed that game. I mean, something just doesn't seem right. For the players and for the team. I'm a huge Sonic fan and this is the first time I've heard of it, let alone the sequels. Next time I see that mate I'll mention it and he probably will shout VINDICATION or something like it
When I tell people that I played sonic the arcade game on holiday no one believed me. It’s not as if sega didn’t have a arcade division for Christ’s sake
Just watched your race drivin episode and so glad I did. I hated your intros so much but after seeing you double down like that I feel like I’m in on the joke. Now I can just think “ooh I hope that annoyed someone somewhere “ so it’s really a 180 for me on the intros. I hope you keep them forever.
I'm surprised it never made it into one of those Sonic compliations...most of those practically had all the major genesis/gg/cd games and a good amount of the niche titles.
You don't need to buy an arcade cab to have a trackball. I use a Kensington Orbit as my main pointing device and I prefer it (due to hand-eye issues long story). It doesn't have the same "weight" as an old arcade trackball, sure, but I'm sure that could either be fixed or adjusted to. And just set, I dunno, Space as the jump, and you're good to go!
I don't know if mame has changed recently, but last I used it you couldn't map trackball spin to correlate with how far you were moving an analog stick, so it might of felt so sensitve because it was going striaght to 100% speed when you pressed a direction.
There's also artwork hidden in the game code showing it was intended to come out in the US, and that the game would be re-drawn with artwork from the Archie Comic/Sat AM cartoon. Mainly Robotnik.

I live down the street. It's great.
You would think Mighty would have the extra health cause he is an Armadilo and Ray would be the fast one
Same! I was surprised Mighty was the fast one as well. Ray should have had a more forgiving jump and Mighty a better health bar but slower speed.
@@Aranesque My personal guess would be that Mighty was originally the strong one, Ray was the balanced one, and Sonic was the fast one before something happened like them realizing mid-development that making their flagship character the hardest to play would turn people off from playing it, or something along those lines.

The actual controls on a real arcade machine are great, and it's because of that I regard this game as pretty much unreviewable.
That's so sad. Arcade Game Preservation seems doomed.

It doesn't have the same "weight" as an old arcade trackball, sure, but I'm sure that could either be fixed or adjusted to. And just set, I dunno, Space as the jump, and you're good to go!
wish SNESDRUNK would do an episode on either THUNDERCADE for nes or The Magic of Scheherazade is also on NES, 2 amazing games that needs more loving
I don't know if mame has changed recently, but last I used it you couldn't map trackball spin to correlate with how far you were moving an analog stick, so it might of felt so sensitve because it was going striaght to 100% speed when you pressed a direction.
It looks awesome
