SegaSonic the Hedgehog (Arcade) Translated Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A translated playthrough of Sega's 1993 arcade platformer game, SegaSonic the Hedgehog.
Played through with Sonic on the machine's default difficulty setting. Since the game was only ever released in Japan, I've translated and subtitled all of the Japanese text.
Sonic has a fair few oddities in his line-up, and this certainly qualifies as one of them. Released on Sega's System 32 arcade hardware in the period between Sonic 2 and 3 on the Genesis, SegaSonic the Hedgehog is an isometric platformer (think Sonic 3D Blast), but with a big, very literal spin on the formula - the entire game is controlled using a trackball instead of a traditional digital joystick. The analog control scheme allows Sonic to change direction smoothly in 3D space, and it gives you granular control over the speed he runs at, making the game feel like an action-oriented take on Marble Madness.
It feels very different from what we've all become accustomed to in the day and age of dual analog sticks on modern controllers, and it is the control scheme that has prevented this game from ever seeing a proper console port. SegaSonic the Hedgehog is virtually unplayable without a trackball. Sure, you could try to approximate things with a mouse or the analog sticks on a gamepad, but by doing that you'd sacrifice any sense of real playability. I played this using a trackball mouse - it's not as ideal as a dedicated arcade control panel with a huge ball mounted in the center, but in Mame (after a lot of tweaking the sensitivity settings!) it provides a fairly close, fairly playable approximation of the original control scheme.
SegaSonic the Hedgehog takes place over seven semi-autoscrolling stages across Eggman Island. It supports up to three players simultaneously, and it introduces the rarely seen characters of Mighty the Armadillo (who we saw again in the 32X exclusive Knuckles Chaotix) and Ray the Flying Squirrel (who later showed up in a cameo appearance in Sonic Generations).
The game works like this: Eggman screams some sort of taunt at our heroes, and you take control just as they begin desperately trying to flee from mortal peril - a wall of lava, giant tornadoes, rolling gears - you know, the usual.
The road to escape is littered with all sorts of hazards that have to be avoided as you collect rings and leap bottomless pits. The whole experience focuses on speed, and despite the sometimes awkward touchiness of the controls, the trackball does an awesome job at making you feel like your tearing things up. Unlike the Genesis platformers, though, SegaSonic is brutally difficult. The short view distance afforded by the angled camera perspective and the need for precision movement at high speeds makes for a game that takes a ton of practice to see through to the end. It's a great deal of fun, but it doesn't hold back any punches. It was designed to be a quarter muncher, after all.
The graphics look awesome, especially for a game from 1993. There is a lot of sprite-scaling going on, and the characters themselves animate really smoothly. There are even a few impressive bits of prerendered CGI going on to fancy it up - just check out that final stretch as you scale Eggman's tower! The sound isn't quite as good as Sonic's usual, though. The music isn't terribly memorable and is often buried beneath by the constant thumps and explosions, and you'll be tired of Sonic's irritating "Waaaaaah!" scream before you even finish the first stage. Still, it all makes for an appropriately bombastic presentation for an arcade game.
If you love Sonic, I'd absolutely suggest checking it out. Just do yourself a favor and get a trackball - it's not worth the effort without one.
I also did a translated video of the SegaSonic Cosmo Fighter arcade game if you are interested. You can find that here: • SegaSonic Cosmo Fighte...

SegaSonic the Hedgehog was one of Sega's earlier "experiments" with the blue blur, and it's quite good. It's just too bad that its control scheme prevented it from ever being ported to any home consoles!
I’ve read that this is similar to Marble Madness.
@@dave4shmups It shares a lot of similarities for sure.

Sega has finally released Golden axe: revenge of death adder as an arcade 1-up so there's hope.
@@Invidente7 Oh really? That's awesome, that's a great game. I'd love to see it on the Switch as an Ages game
It's interesting to say the least. In this game Robotnik isn't trying to take over the world he's just trying his damndest to outright kill Sonic and Friends this time. Even if that means blowing up his own private island. If they had released this stateside with the slightly edgier tone i'd probably change up the character roster a bit and release this as a Sonic SatAm tie in of sorts. I mean this Robotnik is doing a perfect Jim Cumming's extra violent one in this little romp.
Dude the sprite work in this game is so dang good
Especially The Rings
Glad to see im not the only one that noticed.
All except the derpy sprites of Sonic and Ray in the credits lmao.
@@secoTheSonicFan it'd still be a good Saturn game
@McKenzie Cooley ??
Impressive graphics for its time. This feels in many ways like a precursor to 1996's Sonic 3D Blast. I had no idea it existed until today.
I had no idea it existed either that sonic game is new to me
@@secoTheSonicFan Yeah, plenty of arcade games, before and after this one had really nice graphics.
Apparently it was going to get a port to gems collection had trouble with the trackball you could’ve basically just used the analog stick end it would like make it always spin it as a control come in
Maybe even find a way to transfer let the games text it self so I don’t have to learn stinking Japanese and change the voice whenever you don’t get a bonus we’ll get a game over it doesn’t fit too much
Yeah, especially for coming out after 2 and CD, before 3&K, that this is the beginning of the franchise canonically, it's a shame more people don't know about it.
Obviously the most difficult, yet hilarious Sonic game ever made
Agree
WAAAAAAAH!!
No kidding.
One of the best sonic games that keeps continuity as well. (One of 23 sonic games that keep a good continuity going between them all)
To arcade game it's meant to have a really heavy difficult spike to get people to spend money to continue
A very tough game, but a great way to bring Sonic to the arcade. You can tell they put a lot of effort into this, and it's a shame it never got a lot of attention.
especially how instead of using the usual joystick you use the sensitive and breakage-prone fist-sized trackball!
With sonic mania plus having ray and mighty im sure its getting a lot more attention.
If only someone found a way to code a English port
@@meyers0781 they probably did that due to the fact that they just don’t want you to hold it one way and then just turn it they wanted to actually show you a sonic speed
I played the game myself and the controls are confusing af,
I died and lost at the last countdown (I suck lol)
This looks to be one of sonic's most brutal adventures.
And yet the game doesn't have a home port
Yea look at the ending
It's also "brutal" to play, on the original cabinet that is. It uses a trackball controller that makes controlling it a bit stressful.
Not only that, its a 3 player game with mighty and ray, so they've been through the same violent experience
I always knew Robotnik was cold-blooded, but this is just taking it up many notches!
This Eggnan the real deal nit a FAKE localisation shit smh
It's the Archie Robotnik!
Well this was their 1st time meeting, this is canonically the 1st game in the entire franchise. Before Tails, Metal and Amy he knew Ray and Mighty, before Green Hill was his home Christmas Island was, before chaos emeralds, form changes, and everything else, this is what started the long and eternal battle of Sonic and Dr Ivo Robotnik aka Dr Eggman.
He got tired of the bullshit lmao
@@IgnatiusBlaze4 Do you have a source on this?
God Eggman is just trying to commit straight murder in this game.
he wants your quarters and he's not screwing around
RIGHT?!
@Shane Douglas What about in SA2 when he pointed a gun at Amy's head, trapped Sonic in a capsule, ejected him into space where it blows up and went back to threatening Tails for the real Chaos Emerald like nothing happened?
Honestly, think about this from mighty or ray's point of view. The only reason wants them both dead is because they are friends with sonic. You could even play the game 100% as JUST Ray or Mighty, where sonic is nowhere to be found. And yet, Eggman still tries to murder them.
I think he was more desperate
I love how at the end Eggman apparently manages to run out of the tower faster than Sonic
Maybe he just does an express roll
Sonic: How can a man that fat MOVE SO F*CKING FAST?!
Sonic 2: *am i a joke to you?*

Labor intensive, but it's traced over CGI.

A game that still deserves a console port as well as Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder.
Agreed. And a real port of Outrunners, not the lame excuse of a conversion they put on the Genesis.
NintendoComplete oh I also forgot to mention Spider-Man the Videogame Arcade.
Arcade1up will release a Golden Axe cab with that game
Arcade1up needs to make cabinets for games like this that are strictly arcade experiences
@@gfys9724 they've done trackball games before, so releasing Sega Sonic Arcade, with Sonic the Fighters would be awesome.
English version of Eggman: uses robots
Japanese version of Eggman: *straight up uses real death traps and a volcano*
Funny you mention the "regional differences", this game was originally gonna get an English release, with the main differences being that the text would be English (who would've thunk it?), Sonic, Ray, Mighty, and Eggman would get VA's from the SatAM and Eggman's design would be based on his SatAM appearance. Though this didn't come to pass and this game has yet to see any official rerelease.
Both versions of Eggman do so. People still talk about SATAM Eggman being downright cruel in many episodes. In fact, people decry that version of Eggman for being way TOO serious, since Eggman in Japan is quite goofy (of course both versions are, one of Eggman's defining traits is that he's childish).
@@victor.elkins eggman was suppose to be a joke because he looked like an egg. His real name is dr julius ivo robotnick. But for somereason they decided to stick with calling him eggman forever. Honestly im not surprised if many dont know his real. I really prefer they went back to robotnick it made more sense and sounded way better
@@hinatalovetonaruto In Japan Eggman is always called Eggman, never Dr Robotnik.

This game is pretty dark considering all the shit Eggman puts Sonic through and the constant peril Sonic is in
Andrew Ambrose Not really...... it’s pretty normal for Sonic standers.
Jk
Yeah, a little bit. Not super-dark, but a bit more extreme than usual Sonic fare. This is Sonic and friends just trying to _survive_, not foil one of Eggman's schemes.
Probably doesn't help there's a bad ending if you fail the tower escape.
Looking for dark search up mephiles the dark
It was horrible trust me..
Im loving this formula for a sonic game. Instead of being some machine-destroying, ring-hoarding menace getting from point A to B, the cat-and-mouse chase gives birth to a lot of new fun gameplay
I mean I love having Sonic be the resident Menace to All Machines, but with the cat & mouse sorta rout to it.
I allways refer to this game as sonics bad day hes just doing his thing he gets kidnapped with two other random people hes never met and has to escape wile robotnic is at his most sadistic and is just having fun toying with them

That explained why Japanese Subbed Sonic & Japanese Subbed Future Trunks sounded so exactly a lot alike

He doesn’t, tho. He sounds like child Trunks...
And that’s just for this game in particular. He’s not voiced by Kusao in the other games or in the cartoons.

And a lot of ball handling hehehe

The “Where Are They Now?” epilogue:
- Sonic’s career of stopping the evil plans of Dr. Eggman continued on, though the quality of his adventures would drop significantly as time wore on.
- Mighty got a brief job as a member of a fledgling detective agency. However, they quickly determined him to be an ill fit for the group and kicked him to the curb.
- The world has heard nothing more of Ray after his escape from Eggman’s tower. However, those close to him simply state that he will return “when the time is right”. Maybe he’ll come back in like 25 years or something, who knows?
"Ray served two terms as mayor of Green Hills, but was outed from office after allegations of sheep molesting. He died two years later from a disease he picked up from a dirty telephone."
(If you have no idea what I'm on about, look up the joke obituaries that a programmer put in Final Fight as an Easter egg.)

Here's a thought: Why can't Sega partner with Arcade1UP, translate the game to English, then sell it as a mini arcade cabinet? Arcade1UP utilized the trackball before.
I'd love that. I dunno if Mame licenses their work out for commercial purposes, though. It's the only emulator to play System 32 stuff, isn't it? And even then, Mame's emulation isn't quite perfect yet.
That would actually be a great idea. But Arcade1Up might have to make it look like the TMNT and upcoming NBA Jam cabinets (because it makes use of 3 players instead of two)
@@NintendoComplete Maybe, but IIRC Sega wanted to release this game overseas for quite some time; they just didn't know what to do with the trackball since it's hard to emulate even with modern technology. Heck, there's even unused sprites of SatAM Robotnik (and boy is he UGLY!), so they were so close! Also, Archie Comics referenced this game, so there's some hype for it.

This feels like it takes place early in Sonic's life, perhaps just after Sonic 1. Just look how panicked he is at the beginning of Landslide Limbo. He's got the skills, but perhaps not all the confidence he gets in later games.
And given Mighty and Ray weren’t seen with Sonic again, I think Sonic might have grown a big ego after the experience; feeling like he could take on the world. Enough to alienate the other two and leaving him to fend against Eggman alone in Sonic 1.

Funny enough this game came very close to an American release. There was sprites found in a build that changed Eggman to his American Robotnik design.
The game doesn't even bother to refill your health after every stage, that's complete BS to suck your pocket dry of quarters, the usual arcade makers tactic.
Seriously, as if it wasn't already hard enough to begin with.
Personally I adore the OST for this game, Stage 2, 3, and 4 are my favorites, really has that Sega Twang.
