Cocobolo With Tanoak & Black Walnut Wood Candy Dish

- Here is a simple Candy dish I made out of Cocobolo wood with Tanoak and Black Walnut design feature. It took me a while to figure out the wood species as the Cocobolo was given to me by a friend. I didn't know during the beginning of filming this. That is at least what I have been able to narrow it down to that looks the closest, and with the density that it is. Thank you very much! It took the longest time to try and figure out what to do with that piece of wood. I had a lot of fun making this, but it was seriously dense wood.

The Marble Mountain Craftsman i think for all of us as there is so many ways to do or apply a finish.
That’s a beautiful bowl. But isn’t there a problem with long grain glued across end grain, which would likely cause it to split after a while because of the uneven movement of the wood with changes in temperature and humidity?
Thank you very much Rick for the kind compliment! That's a very good point, and I'm glad you brought that up. I had thought about that a few times, but I figured that the wood was so dense that the movement would be very miniscule, but it's still a roll of the dice on what will happen in the long run. Each glue up I did I let sit in the clamps for a minimum of 24 hours, hoping that it would maybe set the bond tighter, but I may be wrong. I have done it on other projects in the past, and haven't noticed any cracking.
It looks like yellow heart to me
It does look like Yellow heart, and I've been asked that before, but it is for sure a Tanoak. The tree was sitting out in the forest up off the ground for at least 30 years. The outside sapwood had completely rotted off when I got it. The first cut I made, I was blown away with the yellow color that had.
Lovely bit of work, I particularly like the way you made the underneath. I wondered why you went to so much trouble to work out the new centre before you cut it up - surely just as easy to do a corner to corner afrer the glue up?
Thank you very much Phil! I wanted to pinpoint the exact center so I knew exactly where the pieces were going to cross at in order to get a measurement for the cut. I did a very similar design where I just eyeballed it, and it didn't turn out at all like the one in this video, so I had to scrap the whole project because it looked horrid. Sometimes I take extra steps to make sure that what I see in my head is what comes into fruition. Thank you again for your kind compliment!

I always have looked at woodworking as a collective art among woodworkers, where we share our ideas and knowledge of the craft. It's a wonderful thing for the mind, body and spirit to do.
