  • Today we look at JoyWay, a VR game developer with a reputation for abandoning games partway through development, canceling them as soon as they're out the door, or just if they dont get enough money. Let me discuss for you their history, and the reason for their sub par reputation. Should you trust them? The TL:DR is NOT A CHANCE!

Hi Sonny. While some of the criticisms are valid, we feel the need to comment on the video and add some context to give the viewer the whole picture.
    1) Joy Way isn't a rebranding of Platforma VR. It was founded by several former Platforma team members, who started a new team. Which means working on any of the previous games was impossible because the company didn't own the intellectual property.
    2) Against features a fully finished and functional campaign with different difficulty levels and a level editor (which is stated on the Steam page). It's still marked as a EA title only because transitioning into full release on Steam gives a game another traffic push. And we have been holding it back, as for the past year we've been discussing with Meta and Sony opportunities to bring the game to these platforms, likely with extra content. But regardless of when that happens, players can fully enjoy the game despite the EA tag.
    3) Outlier was closed not only because it had some core design flaws evident after launch. But also (addressing the comment about the lack of marketing research) it was created as a PC VR-first title. During the 2 years of development, the whole market shifted drastically towards standalone VR and at the point we launched the game, Steam VR was already almost dead from a financial standpoint. VR devs are working in one of the fastest changing industry, and sometimes your stakes go wrong.
All players have been offered a full refund with no time limit from the company directly if they weren't able to get a refund via Steam. Player feedback was carefully studied and all the good that was in that game was remade into Dead Hook, which is now a success, and people love it.
    4) Red Flowers is a free demo on AppLab and we have no moral or legal obligation to update or develop it further. The project was put on hold as the team was focused on STRIDE: Fates. Furthermore, some level design and mechanics from Red Flowers ended up in STRIDE: Fates, offering more content to the buyers of the latter game.
    5) STRIDE Multiplayer was never a "cheap way to provide content and value". Our stats show that since its launch, the player base split almost 50/50 between MP and single-player modes in terms of playtime and engagement. With 3 evolving single-player and 7 multiplayer modes, the game provided a ton of value for the players during its lifespan, which is represented by the overall very positive review rating of the game.
    6) STRIDE: Fates indeed could use some extra polish before launch, and we take it as our mistake. However, the issues have already been patched out and on top of that, 2 major DLC were released for free. Featuring a Mixed Reality mode, fresh mechanics, new levels and an open-world area that continues the main story and will take up to 1/3 of the base game's playtime to complete. The game will also launch on PSVR 2 and Steam very soon, and the Steam players of STRIDE in EA will get a free copy of this $30 title.
We have always valued our players and do everything we can to provide them with the best possible value. Sometimes gamedev is hard and difficult decisions have to be made to ultimately benefit the end user with better VR games. If we make mistakes - we fully acknowledge and take responsibility for them, offering players a refund (like with Outlier) or a better future game (like with STRIDE: Fates).
Ultimately, we've been making solid and reasonably priced games, every time trying to push VR gameplay and the industry forward. To bring fun and joy to likeminded people sharing our passion for the medium. And we plan to continue doing so :)
We hope this message clear things up a bit and would appreciate if it could be pinned. Having double-checked it after the coming across this video, we can unfortunately confirm that your email was received but for some reason got lost in the Promotions tab.

Thanks for the response! Whilst I'm not going to respond to every point as I believe neither side would reach a satisfying conclusion, I could say that alongside other comments mentioning this point. You guys need better communication for past and present projects, i appreciate the honest and transparency in most of the points made, but what happened to time hacker? Why did you not tell the players anything in over a year about Against? Why was stride fates pushed out when it obviously needed polish?
Once again i’m both surprised and grateful that i got a response from yourselves, i hope that this concern as well as other public facing forums negative opinions show you that talking to your fans, keeping up presentation and communication pathways, and just being transparent when stuff works for doesn't would do a lot for brand identity.
As i mentioned in the video, I cant trust you right now after the points i've listed, but that dosent meant i wont feel like i could again in the future. I'm always rooting for indepentent VR developers, i love the medium so much! I just hope you learn and iterate in the future.

Also they are incredibly slow when it comes to releasing games onto steam. They took almost a full year from when dead hook released to get it to steam vr. I kept looking at the steam page for it when it released on quest, so I looked through the discord to see if there was a timeframe.
The only thing that appeared was a dev saying “there is currently no internal plans to port it to steam vr.” why have it listed as “coming soon” on steam vr then?

Everything is well said in this video. It's hard to add anything. I don't know how big the team is, or who makes these decisions to just move on. I imagine its some investor who thinks they understand videogame development. I hope the developers aren't just being pushed around by some hothead, and losing the chance to really express their creativity.
