I hate it when that happens and I have the "wrong" equipment. But, the catching wasn't too bad that session...Thanks for watching.

Same here, I’ve been surfing for over 40 years. That said, I’m still gonna say the Lucky Craft 110 and the Calissa are the best surf fishing lures! I spend my summers in Mexico surfing and fishing for 6 weeks every year and the LC 110 gets hammered by everything from snook, grouper, snapper, halibut etc. Here at home in Hermosa Beach, I catch striper, perch, halibut, croaker on em! 🏄🏼‍♂️🎣🤙🏻

Out of curiosity, have you tested/tried the LIVE TARGET Erratic Shiner at all - local or in Mexico? I've used all different brands and sizes of jerkbaits in the surf and harbors. Problem with jerkbaits is that you have to have several different ones for fishing through the entire water column (ie 110 for 0-2', 115 for 2-4', so on and so forth). That ends up being a lot of lures if you have varying depths of water you're fishing on different tides. The Erratic Shiner sinks, but it rises when I retrieve quicker. I can fish the entire water column with 1 lure. That is why I choose it as my new #1 surf fishing lure.

@ No, but, I’ve used blade baits ( Damiki Vault ) in the surf and caught fish! Also, small Kastmaters work well too. I’ve just had so much success both at home and in Mexico throwing LC 110’s! I’ve actually caught some nice snappers on Whopper Ploppers in Mexico in the rocks and over reefs. I’m also an avid bass fisherman and many bass lures cross over nicely in saltwater. That said, I pretty much stick with surf fishing when it comes to saltwater so depth isn’t as important. LC 115 and Battlestar 115’s get deeper if that’s your goal. As far as barred surf perch go, nothing beats the good ole Carolina rigged motor oil colored grub ( Mister Twister ) in my opinion. But, I rig mine on a 1/16 -1/32 oz jig head tail up as it keeps the bait more stationary in the surf and less erratic keeping the grub in the strike zone longer. 🏄🏼‍♂️🎣🤙🏻

@SMC4117 That's the best part of this lure - Nobody and no fish are used to is here. The Damiki Vault is just a blade lure that sinks fast (doesn't flutter). Metal Kastmasters and Krododiles are the same, they sink fast due to metal built, so you have to constantly retrieve in order for it to have action. Yes, the LCs and Calissas catch fish and nearly all surf anglers use them because they see nearly all other surf anglers use them - so naturally they see they work, just by shear volume. A BIG issue with those jerkbaits is casting into onshore winds. Good luck. With the Erratic Shiner, there is absolutely NO issues with casting into wind. You can also test the LIVE TARGET Flutter Shad/Sardine.
Deep is not the goal. Being able to have a REALISTIC action throughout the ENTIRE water column during the entire retrieve and catch a large variety of fish consistently with as few lures as possible is the goal.
As for Carolina rig, I respect your opinion, and the opinion of 99% of the rest of the surf fishing population, but it is NOT the most effective setup for catching the small-medium size perch that the small grub catches. Any time you have a weight between your bait/lure and your brain, you're going to miss many fish. If you want to know what I use, let me know. Thank you for the communication string here! Great stuff!

@ I’d be happy to hear your techniques. I fished blade baits in bigger surf with heavy currents when nothing else can handle it. Basically an experiment that turned out to work nicely in those conditions with a yo yo retrieve. I fished with a dude a couple of times that holds 2 barred surf perch world records. Both caught on a LC 110. He swore by the more beat up, scratched and chipped ( changed out the hooks ) it was, the bigger and more productive the LC 110 would become. In my experience, this is true. My PB striper ( 15+lbs ) and Halibut ( 42” ) was on a totally jacked up LC 110 sardine pattern! I do agree with you though. Throwing a new bait, especially in highly fished beaches, will produce nicely! I fish tournaments out in Tennessee every year on my annual “man trip” and do a ton of research to bring something new to the table as far as lures go! That said, I still hold the record for the biggest smallmouth bass caught in a tournament on a wacky rigged senko😂 And that was after a half a jar of moonshine! Fishing is a funny game! Just had a 12’ glider shaped. Looking forward to cruzing .🏄🏼‍♂️🎣🤙🏻

The more fish you catch on any 1 particular lure, the more confidence you build into it and the more you will continue to cast that 1 lure. Naturally, that 1 lure will get beat up, scratched, chipped, etc. It's not that it being beat up, scratched, and chipped is why it's getting bit. It's simply getting bit because you constantly use it because you know it's going to get bit.
As for why I don't fish the Carolina rig for anything besides bait and wait style. With standard Carolina rig, you have a grub/sandworm on a hook. Then you have a leader, typically 12" - 24" long from the hook to the swivel. Then you have the bead and weight with the braid/main line tight to the other end of the swivel. The main line then goes up through the tip eye, down through the guides and to the reel. Of course then you have your hand, arm, shoulder, neck to brain. When you cast, say 50ft out, that's a long way for a sensation of a fish bite to travel. When you have a weight between the lure/bait and your brain, that weight absorbs nearly all of the bite sensation before it gets to your brain. I don't have a percentage, but the vast majority of bites with perch and yfc happen without you even knowing and are gone. There's such a long lag as it is, but then adding the weight between increases that lag. The current is constantly moving that grub/sandworm and creating slack. That fish easily bites and release before you even felt the slight tug.
What I use instead. I use a dropper setup with the weight on the shorter line. This simple adjustment increased my bite to hook ratio by x-times. I cannot measure it (in a good way). So much higher. With the dropper the weight has no impact on the sensation. It's removed from the equation. The bite is from hook to brain (with everything else mentioned above except for the weight). A simple surgeon's knot I believe is what it's called. Even a 1/2oz egg sinker creates a MASSIVE delay compared to no weight at all.
Now, larger, more aggressive fish are going to attack the grub and swallow it, so less issue there.
Congrats on your record catches. That's great!

It's a pretty small surf compared to Northern California..... It looks a lot like So Cal to me...
Anyway,.. I tend to cast bigger or larger lures in the surf because I cast a heavier conventional set-up here in the big surf ...minimum 3oz to 4oz. bucktails and big 8 to10 oz surface poppers ..Yes,.. very old-school indeed, but very effective.... there a lot to be said about old-school heavy heavers and high line capacity multiplier reels...easy 150-yard casts all day long... not straight out but from left to right covering the trough/strike zone for a longer period of time
    Do the math 🤙😎👍

Yes, SoCal. The vast majority of our fish - at a sandy, no natural structure beach - are within 30-50yds from the sand/shore.

Aight, I'm sold. Picked up 1/2 and 3/4 in glow Bback from the Mustad link. I'm usually south of the pier. HB is about the easiest for me to get to from teh IE. Is it any better up there? Always seems to be more surfing traffic up there. Look forward to bumping into you one of these days...

Excellent choices! I don't worry about the surfers. It's a whole different world under the surface. Due to the whole area being a sandy beach w/out any natural rock or reef structure, the fish follow the food. On any given day, any location that holds bait/food is where you'll get bit the most.

Yozuri hydro minnow is deadly for all species. There’s another from overseas but I can’t share that info online😂

@ the action and cast ability are superior. They both work but you said that lure is The Best. That’s very subjective. I simply expressed the hydro minnow is deadly and works great. I don’t doubt that your lure of choice works, it does. To each their own but I suggested perhaps try the hydro minnow. Very basic concept! The lucky craft 110 will Always be a fish killer. The hydro minnow outcasts it and can either sink or twitch it on top. And again can cast a mile
