- 3 Days of Fly Fishing in California's backcountry for some of the most legendary native trout in the world!!
California is well known for the Golden trout, one of the coolest native species of trout in the world. But to catch these fish in their native range, which is what we wanted to do, you have to hike well over 20 miles one way to accomplish that task. So after planning the trip we were able to book a plane ticket and found ourselves deep in a California National Forest.
Day 1 in California's wilderness involved us hiking around 5 miles to catch the Little Kern Golden trout. This native trout is separated from the Kern River Rainbow by one set of falls on the lower end of the Little Kern River. These fish don't quite exhibit the same golden Hugh as the more famous California golden trout, but we were able to find some fish with yellow bellies which made for a cool experience. After catching and releasing our fair share of fish we hiked another 5 miles and set up camp.
Day 2 in California found us face to face with several black bears and rattlesnakes. We learned quickly that California's backcountry isn't a joke and that we needed to be on alert at all times. We hiked to our next locations and started fishing for the Kern River Rainbow trout, which was far more difficult to catch due to the high water levels. We did end up finding a few and then fished a little tributary to ensure we caught a good representative of the species before hiking to our camp site. While setting up camp we literally had snakes slithering around us... which was unsettling.
Day 3 involved a pretty strenuous hike up a mountain in search of the California golden trout. We blue lined a few creeks once we got above a set of falls separating the California golden trout from the kern river rainbow trout. We were able to hit 4 different creeks and catch the native California golden trout in them. One was an awesome spring creek, one ran through some awesome volcanic rock, and another was tannic with pine sap. It was truly one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had fly fishing. The trout were feeding with little regard for our presence, which is not a shock considering we were over 20 miles from the nearest road.
Overall this trip to the backcountry of California in search of the golden trout was one I'll never forget. It was the best camping, backpacking, and fishing experience of my life probably, and I'm not sure if I'll ever get to do it again or not. I truly hope you enjoyed watching Andrew and I fly fish these small streams for trout. Thanks for watching!

Love the native trout 👍
You and me both! Thanks for watching
That is just amazing. I would be beyond happy to even look at someplace this beautiful. The thumbnail really doesn't do this piece of art justice.
Not gold, it's a flaky silicate called mica that forms in sheets and can break down into those small bits that looked like gold. Love the video!
Awesome fishing guys !!! You guys are catching some majestic, beautiful trout, wow, nice !!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
yall gotta go back sometime and do part 2 , this wasbestb probably in the top 10 of your best recorded work. Seriously !
Thank you!! We may do a part 2 eventually... we have some unfinished business in California. But I doubt it'll be this summer. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful fish and scenery.... great adventure! People forget Parts of California beautiful and almost untouched.
Yep, and those are the best parts of California!
Dude! Those trout are awesome, might have to plan a trip myself!
It's worth the trip but come prepared!
I've said it before, but you and your bro are living the dream! Great video!!
Thank you!
Great adventure. Such respect for the fish and the environment. Joy in fly fishing whether a small or large fish. Just wish you would share more about the flies you are using at the time. Safe travels
EPIC ADVENTURE! And great story! Good work! It will most definitely be great to look back on as the year pass
I've never been to the Sierra Nevada Range. To go up in the high Sierra was a definite bucket list item, but afraid time and resources have run out. That is fine. I've been blessed to fish other beautiful places with the best of friends. To remember the first species of trout caught, where I netted it and what it ate will remain with me. Now I'll experience The Sierra through your eyes, fishing and digital cameras which ain't too bad. Take care.
Once again, you two presented a great 3 day adventure. Thanks Jon and Andrew!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Incredible!
Good to watch this video again. Awesome adventure with beautiful species.

What a fantastic place, that scenery is gorgeous and so are the fish. Didn't know that the trails were all marked, I thought that you just went where ever you wanted. Bet that the ones you kept tasted as good as they looked cooked over your campfire. Really lovely video.
Hey! I kind of caught one of those today! Just a stocked one though.👍 sweet vid man!
Great video! Very enjoyable - well done!
What's that you're using to attach your net to your side by the way?
When I’m older I will be going there. Those fish are worth the travel
Wow beautiful landscape and water, not to mention fish. Another superlative video thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
it is so tough to get into that area. I do it from the eastern side on week long trips. it's a little easier to access. my favorite ways to access the Kern are kearsarge pass, up bubbs Creek, over Forester pass, over to lake south america, down the upper Kern basin to the tyndell cutoff back over to the jmt, over Forester pass, bubbs Creek and out kearsarge pass.
another is trail pass to golden trout creek, down to little Whitney meadow, down to the Kern, back up to volcano creek, over to golden trout creek and out trail pass.
I've accessed it from the west side via the high sierra trail as well. much harder to hike in and out though.
Good work boys....Reminds me of when I was 20 yrs old and chasing wild trout all over the Sierras...good times
Thank you! It was a blast for sure. Thanks for watching
Awesome guy's.. plan on yellow stone late summer trip
The adventure is what keeps us at it.
On one of the videos I saw you putting some fancy socks and overlapping those on top of your boots. Please tell us about that "know how" of yours! Thank you! P.S. Awesome places and quality time there! Thanks for sharing!
Fantast video!
Thank you!
hello most beautiful outstanding video so far thank you for sharing such stunning senerie. tight lines always many blessings.
Fish on guys love it
Glad you loved it
Good thing you brought your big net for all those monsters your reeling in 😂
I use the net to make sure I take care of the fish not because I need it to land them necessarily 😂 thanks for watching!
And just when you think the videos can’t get any better . “Dub V” boys showing how it’s done 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
These videos are awesome, and they have taught me a lot about fly fishing! This looks like a lot of fun! I and some friends are planning to go on some backpacking trips and are planning to catch some golden trout as well. There is some awesome trout fishing here in Wyoming. If you have a chance to fish here, you totally should. You would have an awesome time!
I will for sure fish Wyoming at some point, If not this year then next! Thanks for watching!
Awesome video, when you posted the video about the Lahontan Cutthroat, adjacent to the original videos for this, you suggested you also had video about the Paiute Cutthroat, I'd love to see that video too
Golden Brotherhood! U Rock.
So fun. Most people have no idea how big America actually is. I've hiked and cruised timber out west. It's not uncommon to not see people for days and that is a good thing. BTW are you sure your related because you look nothing alike...lol
Oh yeah for sure. I think we saw one other human being in 4 days, with almost 75 miles hiked in total (if I remember correctly). America is pretty impressive! And yep, born 2.5 years apart LOL
3:49 It probable isn't... Was that one purpose or did you miss it?
Why are the fish so small? Is it Just because of the small stream?
For the most part yes, from what I know it’s easier for the fish to get bigger the bigger the water. If the fish gets so big in that small stream it would get picked off really easily.
The fish up there are in the High Sierra. Winter is long and harsh. They are the right size to survive. You don't fish for them to catch big fish. You do it for their wild beauty.
I've fished that area for 4 plus decades, they *do* get a lot bigger, even in the tiny creeks, BUT, it's quite uncommon because the conditions are harsh. Also, Goldens don't get particularly large to begin with. Anything over about 15" is a trophy size for most people.
Great video! Silly question, but who makes those burnt orange pants?
I think those are made by REI
Hey, my net just got a hole in it and am wondering where you got yours😆
is this the same california trip you guys did last year or is this new?
@44:27 LOOK HOW COLORFULL THESE "STUPID" FISH ARE LOL
I use stupid as a term of endearment a lot of times😂
With flows that high, where did you cross the main Kern?
We swam it, real sketchy stuff
Just kidding just kidding!! There are several bridges across the kern, we had to use one of them. Nobody should ever cross a river like that.
thats a lightning trout though right? the big yellow one.
No clue what y’all call them but as someone who grew up in the state where they originated… we call them golden rainbow trout 😂 assuming you’re talking about the yellow fish in the intro of the video
@@hardmanfishing ya I guess they call them lightning trout here in CA 😅 they really only stock them in our lakes down here in SoCal.
@@Scottttyboy Makes sense, you guys have to separate them from your native golden trout... we don't have that issue! 😂
Man you almost stepped on a big ass snake at 15 min 50 sec had me scared as hell
What dates was this filmed??....curious about the high flows?
It was last July or maybe August I believe. Not sure on the exact dates I'd have to really look back. But the flows were crazy high last summer even late into the summer.
Still no catch and cook brother
Some % of those fish died. Just leave them alone and fish the stockers.
Not necessarily true... if you take care of the fish they almost always survive. Plus it's totally legal to keep and eat them as far as I can tell. So obviously the state of California does not deem the golden trout to be in bad shape. And stocked trout do nothing more than take the place of wild trout and arguably cause more harm... in fact the kern river rainbow is a species of concern BECAUSE of stocking. In other words this comment is totally backwards, you should stop supporting stocking these waters and instead fish for the native trout and show the state what value they bring. Thanks for watching.
It's called fools gold. Pyrite
