  • The Čierny Hron Railway is a narrow gauge railway in the Slovak Ore Mountains, it was originally built to transport wood from the forests in the area. By the middle of the 20th century the network had grown to a total length of 132 km. During the period 1927 to 1962, passenger trains ran between Čierny Balog and Hronec. The line finally was closed to all traffic in 1982; fortunately the tourist potential of the line has since been recognised, culminating in it being granted national heritage status allowing enthusiasts to carry out necessary repair work for the line to re-open in 1992 as a heritage railway. The system now extends for over 17 km serving Chvatimech, Hronec, Čierny Balog, Vydrovo and Dobroč, although on this visit trains were not running between Šánske and Chvatimech due to ongoing track repairs.
    An unusual feature of this railway is that it passes between the grandstand and the football pitch at the TJ Tatran Čierny Balog football club stadium. For this trip a delightful little steam Locomotive “Joy U34.904” was provided to haul our train.

      Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Slovakia is a great place for unusual railways. I try to include maps with most of my later videos, although finding good maps in the public domain can be challenging.

    Hello Tim! A really nice exotic steam locomotive. The chimney is almost bigger than the steam boiler. A wonderful video. Many thanks and greetings from Hans from the Mühlviertel. Keep it up Tim.👍👍👍🚂🚂🚂

    These narrow gauge engines often have fascinating valve gear don't they. That looks very much like a Swiss mountain railway loco.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  6 років тому

      The valve gear looks complicated, when compared to an inside cylinder British locomotive, although its accessibility makes it easier to maintain. I also noted the piston gear and connecting rods were also used to operate various oil pumps and ancillaries. The ornate well engineered look does give it a Swiss style appearance, even though it is not being used to drive a rack pinion wheel.

      Slovakia is Europe's hidden gem, it is a beautiful country and the narrow gauge trains on the Čierny Hron Railway are a real credit to the people who look after them.

    Hello Tim, in kuk Austria there were countless forest railways. As you experienced at this ride, steam locos had to be small and agile, yet carry heavy loads. They had to be able to supply themselves with natural water. Also typical are huge spark arresters on the chimneys.
    You and your travel group are drawn by one of the most beautiful steam locos of 'Waldbahnen' having with 'U34.904 "Joy"' her own Facebook page.
    Heinz
    p.s. how was this ride at really fresh air?

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  6 років тому

      Hello Heinz, this was my first experience of a European narrow gauge for forest railway, I really enjoyed the experience. The little engine was a delight, it looked perfectly proportioned as it passed in front of the football stadium. I didn't know " U34.904 - Joy"' had her own Facebook Page, I'll have to take a look. There is still more to be seen. I'm working on the next two videos, hopefully the first will be ready shortly.

    Glad someone saw the potential of bringing money to an area, and it was nice not to see engines 'over restored', meaning the second a spot of dust or drop of water lands on the loco everyone has to polish it off. Ok these engines looked nice and shiny when new but they didn't stay that way for long as they were intended to do, (quite often), a dirty job. The trouble nowadays with a lot of preserved things personally I think people do the opposite and 'over preserve' them, - present them clean yes, but not with a finish even the original maker would not have delivered them in.

      Hi Christopher, its great that this little bit of Slovakian railway history has been saved for us all to enjoy. I felt like a genuine operating railway in its last years before succumbing to the inevitable march of road competition. The carriages were a bit work worn, the locomotives looked as though their crews were doing their best to keep them looking respectable, I fully understand by what you mean by looking too perfect, this railway got the balance just right.

    • @christopherlovelock9104
      @christopherlovelock9104 6 років тому

      AS you say, (accidentally perhaps), they got the 'olde worlde' charm just right, and from your film it shows just beautifully. Not a case of wondering whether your going to make it to the end, but a nice feeling of age together with a pleasant ride through some lovely countryside.

    Hello Tim! Yeah, it's enchanting small steam engine. The locomotive pipe is wonder! I had great pleasure, like at my childrenhood :-) And even terrain, on which narrow gauge railway runs at 15:15+, is a bit like mine... The method of replenishing the locomotive with water from river at 13:38+ is original. I noticed only one boy at 21:20+ and the tourists are all people in age of... Only we have interest to these whole "old technique"... Thank you very much!

      Hi Chuck, most of the participants of the tour were the wrong side of twenty one, but there were a lot of youngsters on the regular service train and I also noticed how young most of the train crew were. There is hope that the young will keep steam railways alive for many years to come. I'm glad this video took you back to your childhood days, before many steam railways succumbed to competition from road transport.

      Hey, just took a look at your "Climate " video. Are those the views from your home? I love the mountains in the background. My mother has a flat on the seafront, although she looks over the same scene each day, it is never the same two days running, maybe holidaymakers enjoying the sun, dull and rainy, beautiful sunsets, raging storms lashing the seafront, ships on the horizon and now there is an offshore wind-farm. Looking at mountains is similar to looking over the sea, an ever changing landscape. Love it.

    • @chucksandos8939
      @chucksandos8939 6 років тому

      Yes, these are views from my apartment. Sure, sea and mountains is best landscapes and for my eye! When I moved here to south of the country, I chose between sea (in Burgas city) and the mountains (here)... I chose mountains all same... :-)))

    • @chucksandos8939
      @chucksandos8939 6 років тому

      P.S. Sure, the wind farm is here too, but sets on the mountains, who bordered Bulgaria and Greece. It can be see in my windows, opens to South (as my logia). Here are and solar farm too: at East-South about 3-4 km distance, on farmers fields... :-)

    This beautiful scenery this small loco pulls her train is part of Carpathians Slovak Ore Mountains belongs to. How long this 'soft' tourism will last? I'm afraid the Carpathians will not escape the fate of the Alps. - Heinz

    A little confusing that both locos appear to be No. 2.

    • @Timsvideochannel1

      Both locomotives operated on different railways, now they both work together still carrying their original numbers, hence two locomotives with the same number.
