    One of my favourite things about heroquest was how it lends itself so well to "house rules". If you want to add roleplaying you can, or just keep it as is.
    My own house rules were 1: players cannot pass through each other. this forced players to really work together.
    2. you can only search for treasure in rooms with furniture. this gave a more realistic "purpose" to all the great furniture.

      I turned Heroquest into a near-d&d rpg by adding a whole bunch of house rules and tables. I don’t remember what I did but it filled a 3-ring binder. It was a good casual dungeon crawl for when we needed a break from the heavier campaign (or if someone couldn’t attend).
      I also remember having a Heroquest computer game that played almost exactly like the board game only in 3D. In fact, I might have got the video game first and that led me to the board game.

    "I replaced all my furniture with Hero Quest furniture." I actually played Space Crusades instead back in the day because I played the video game on Amiga....that was my intro to 40K, but I never got into the table top game...Space Crusades was all I needed, and all I could afford. At the time it was difficult to find other people who wanted to play because on average it took about an hour to set up the game. I bought a copy of Hero Quest about two years ago, I went into a board game crazy after backing a kickstarter for Resident Evil 2, the Board game. Also backed a kickstarter on Who Goes There, but I missed both the first and second kickstarter for the Conan board games....the second one only had a fifteen day window and I missed it, same with Resident Evil 3, but I was ready for that one. The interesting thing is, I've been buying a lot of these games solely for the miniatures. I put into the kickstarter for Anno Domini 1666 because I loved the idea of having miniatures of The Three Musketeers and Don Quixote....not to mention the kickstarter for Solomon Kane. There is an absolute beautiful miniature of a snake in one of the expansions I desperately had to have, that I bought two of them. The curses of a collector.

    I just bought a hardly ever used, near mint condition, complete (perhaps not all cardboard tiles because the number of those arent in the “whats in the box” part of the rules) for $4 at my local Salvation Army thrift store. I bought it for the minis- but figured I’d look up the game since I’m a gamer and wanted to see if it was interesting before I disassembled it. I am so thankful I did! I am definitely keeping this game in a place of honor, and playing it with my friends at the soonest opportunity!

    It's crazy seeing this. This is the set up that I actually played my first D&D game with and actually used some of the minis from it for years as pcs in an ongoing 2e game with my dad. This was the starting dungeon and from there the story took place in the world of Mystara eventually branching into the Hollow world. Really cool to see this.

    Only just found this video. I actually have this game with the first 2 expansion sets. Never played it so totally complete with most of the card tiles still in their surrounds & the skeletons etc from the expansion sets still on their sprue.
    The only thing I remember is I accidently cut off the top of the magic users staff because I wanted to paint the hero's but never did & so they went back into the box. Shame that the boxes are a bit tatty. Maybe one day I will find someone who wants to play it with me 😊

    My brother and I went halves in this back in the day. But never really played it as intended. We were around 9 or 10, and I think it was too complex for us.
    With two of us, I guess 1 needed to be DM and the other player... which was why we never really played the game. The figs and pieces were cool though, and I think we just messed around with those.

    I recently stumbled upon Ye Olde Inn and their amazing stash of HeroQuest. I have since begun a D&D 5e campaign on D&D Beyond's Roleplay Forum heavily influenced by the game. HEAVILY!!! I recently (yesterday) just finished painting on photoshop a miniature of Mentor that I created on Heroforge and showed it to my players. I am also about a third of the way through building a 3D (with Fog of War and light dynamics) map of The Trial adventure, on ArkenForge. I will also be making and painting minis for the monsters. Oh, and the last thing I gave my PCs before they left were tiny figurines that look like the characters in the game; as magic items that will boost their abilities over time. There is no hope for me, the rabbit hole is DEEP and I dove straight in. See you on the other side!

    There's a warehouse somewhere in Spain (or there was) with boxes and boxes of Heroquest 25th edition which cannot legally be sold (there was a video on YT of a French guy showing warehouse footage and commentating).
    I apologize on behalf of all Spaniards for Gamezone not being able to differentiate between the IP rights of the physical components of an established board game Vs the IP itself (something akin to getting the rights for an E.T. plastic toy and then trying to make E.T. 2 the movie using a new version of the old plastic toy I suppose). There's an ongoing court case here in Spain whereby folks who backed the Heroquest 25th edition are attempting to claw back their Kickstarter money but alas in Spain you can issue a court order but getting the money which has since 'vanished' or is 'unobtainable' (meaning 'spent') is a tall order.

    • @Johnny_Nitro

      So, is there any way to "obtain" one of those copies?

    • @davedogge2280
      @davedogge2280 4 роки тому +1

      @@Johnny_Nitro not really, I've looked on ebay in Spain and milanuncios etc (there's another one I cannot remember) and nothing. There's a couple of ads for it on ebay but the photos only show 20 plastic miniatures in grey (no box or rules or components) which could have just been randomly printed out on someones' 3d printer i.e. a scam (another one). You probably have to know a guy that knows a guy, I have fanatical Heroquest fan friends here in Spain and they've not come across any copies.

      That's just crazy. Honestly, I think Moon Design is being a bit of a snit. Its an RPG not a boardgame.
      I mean, Milton Bradley had the exact same IP and there was no issue. Its obnoxious.

    • @davedogge2280
      @davedogge2280 4 роки тому

      @@captcorajus HeroQuest was like a cultural zeitgeist in Spain, every kid wanted a copy back in the day so the spotlight is on that game for anyone that attempts to encroach on its IP. If it was an IP that no-one hardly has heard of they would be more relaxed with the copyright laws unless it had a killer success, in which case lawyers would be all over it for a cut of the profits.

    • @DocEonChannel
      @DocEonChannel 4 роки тому +1

      @@captcorajus You've reversed the historical order a little. HeroQuest was always the announced title for the follow-up RPG for RuneQuest, But since Chaosium took a long time bringing that game to market, and were kind of naive about legalities in the early days of the industry, Games Workshop/Mitlon Bradley could just snatch the name out from under their noses and lay a claim to it. So when the RPG eventually came out it had to go under the title of Hero Wars - at least until MB let their trademark lapse. Moon Design (who at the time held the license from Chaosium) quickly snatched it up and renamed the second edition of Hero Wars to HeroQuest. Since then, Moon Design has merged with Chaosium (essentially becoming the new management there), and since Chaosium have gotten burned before they're not about to relax their stance on IP again.

      I didn't miss it. I have both game versions. They are virtually identical in most respects. Zargon is Morcar in the European release which I mentioned.
      The spells and treasures are all the same, though there is significant rewording of the text for clarity. Clearly due to player's input.
      Monster stats likewise get tweeked, though I've never heard of the American version being referred to as '2nd edition', though obviously the 'Game System' Text appears on the box.
      For the context in this review i didn't really go into that much detail. :)
