I do NOT agree. I give this game a 12/10 instead of 11/10. FINALLY the “I go all then you go all with ... dozens of interrupts” was put aside. This is NOW a true simultanious tactical wargame WITHOUT 300+ rules overhead... Brilliant.
I like to add that SoS pits it right in respect of unit composition as well. It scales great and gives you all kind of units at your command. A sniper, MG Squad or a mortar team? You are more into explosives and artillery? Transport or armoured units? I love it! The quality of the cardstock and grafic are marvellous. There are enough rules and details without sacrificing the playing SoS. I bought both new boxes AtB and SoS while didn't had to because academy games have all new charts/rules for download. BUT....there is one annoying thing about the cardstock of the cards. The material differs from AtB to SoS. One has cardstock and one semi transparent plastic cards. I HATE this aspect VERY much. Why did they experiment and change the base material?
All in all a series I have come back to over and over. AP with a push your luck element is maybe better than chit pull. I love both, but that ability to burn units out trying to make a big play is exciting. Such a great solo system with or without the deck they sell.
Nooooooo...the hex numbers are given in tiny black numbers. Again. White please. I’m too old to read numbers that small but even with hawk eyes the numbers still get lost in the heavier terrain.
Derekrledr future play testing groups should deliberately include some “older eyes” .... Map design can be so critical to playability. Maybe we “older eyes” aren’t in core target market? 🙈 I do appreciate the extra effort and cost AG went to in order to deliver maps of high product quality. 🙃
We really took this into account for the 3rd Ed maps by making the numbers slightly bigger and bolder, along with a much more defined white background. Especially in heavy terrain, etc. These are MUCH more legible than Guadalcanal. :) - Uwe
Solo does not come in a basic box. Uwe will probably do a new edition of solo module in the future, but it might be a while. Having said that... CoH solo module is probably the best solitaire implementation in any board game I’ve ever seen. It gets even better with firefight generator module. Once you understand the system, you can craft bespoke AI for your games, with difficulty level you like, behaviour you like, and with mission specific reactions and counters. 100% worthwhile, if you like the system.
Playing the amazing Northern Front campaign scenario right now! The BEST scenario Uwe had ever created, by leaps and bounds, and it is designed to utilise all the expansions, if you have them.
Imaginary Star Studios how can I ever find the northern part front ? Sadly I knew about this game only recently and was so convinced by storm of steel that I bought awakening of the bear today ... ! But ... I heard about the northern part campaign for SoS and I’m really interested to play it but it only come for preorder version isn’t ? :(
I am new to the CoH with the 3rd edition. I might be playing it incorrectly - I leave stress markers on any unit that acted but should I be taking stress marker off a unit if another unit acts, such that the first unit can then act again without the addition stress penalty added to its next action’s cost? Maybe the way I am playing causes the sense I have that there is not enough time in scenarios - because my method of marking stress causes units to become spent too soon too frequently?
Derekrledr I sure appreciate the correction. I must have missed something in the rules. I agree that the game should be much better playing it properly. I was ready to conclude that I did not like the game - too many times when the whole side would become spent without accomplishing much during an entire round. THANKS!!!
Goh TeckSiong, yes, the Solo Exp for Awakening the Bear cards can be used for AtB, SoS and Price of Honour - Second or Third Editions. It is actually the first published work that used the 3rd Ed spent system. With the Solo Exp you use the cards, with the 3rd Ed games you use the spent die. SAME system. :) - Uwe PS - The Solo Exp was sold out, but was sent to distribution 2 weeks ago. Should be hitting stores in the USA and Canada soon. You can also get it from our webpage and on Amazon. :)
Just tried 3rd edition rules for the first time and agree this great game just got better! Living rules available from Academy, just need to find some D10s and you have upgraded to the new edition! Love that Academy supports the purchasers of the previous editions.
My experience with the Fatigue and new Spent rule was terrible! In one game the Soviets advanced tanks and they all got spent after their very first move, Then the Germans opened up with all their tanks and the hidden ones and just annihilated the Reds!
I have the first edition of awakening the bear, storms of steel and price of honour and this board game is sooooo fucking great...no matter which edition you have. :) Buy it when you can. Greetings from Germany.
How heavy would you say this game is it would be my first wargame like this o dod just buy an attrition of souls o almost bought this a few years ago . But now with new editions I kind of want it again

Marco, I think it's about time for new "best war games" list, according to you. :)
Yess! Couldn't wait for your review on this one! Thanks a lot! :)
I was expecting so much for this review. Thanks
Thank you very much Marco. I really appreciate your work and value your personal opinion. I ordered Storms of Steel and AtB 3rd Edition. Best regards!
I really enjoy Band of Brothers and Nations at War series for tactical but I agree on your "11" score. Fast favorite in my group. TY
You deserve a lot more subscribers sir!
Have another one, great review!!!
thanks! this is looking like my preferred Christmas gift from Santa Claus

Mike Hill I too have older eyes and both hex numbers and center dots can be very hard to see. Frustrating.

Can’t disagree with this comment

Hi,
Is the price of honor expansion compatible with 3rd Edition rules?
Have it pre ordered. So do we need a solo expansion kit for it, or is it ok the way it is.
Would love to know if solo comes with the core box too.

When does stress get removed from a unit?
The first game I remember utilising AP was Fire Team by West End games early 80s

Can the solitaire cards system from previous version be use in this version?
no unfortunately
Why not? Academy Games sell the bundle Awakening the bears+solo+firefight generator...
WinterXL no, it’s sold out now. 3rd edition

Hey, what about playing this game solo?
An 11?! How can I not buy this game? Thanks for the review.
love your channel!
do you work at a game store?
best wishes
Mary Sue I believe he is an Italian based Professor.
@@tampatarpon I THINK: While he's Italian, I think he's based in the US (I think he might have said Indiana in one of the videos).
Hes a teacher and lives in Indiana (and doesn’t answer comments, alas)....
Marco is a professor and published author of some fantastic books on game design! Look him up on Amazon! He is one smart cookie! :)
🏛️ Uwe Eickert ok under what name? He should write something on hair regrowth.
Macro where can we see your list of favorite games?
Macro, I love you but I am so jealous, dude. LOL. I still haven't gotten mine.
Me either...
