Had the same problem with the drive. Fixed. When the cable is not attached securely to the mower frame, the cable pull movement is taken up by the unsecured inner cable movement by the flex in the unsecured cable. Secured the cable so no flex of the inner cable occours by tying cable at points between the gearbox and handle lever. Now works perfectly. Thanks..appreciate your great videos..
For someone who don’t know much about mowers a very easy and enjoyable video to watch even if mowing isn’t your thing I got heaps of tips thanks say hello to David darren from Australia I got given a b/Stratton 725 exi self propelled
I'm just about to buy a Briggs and stratton used mower. So checked out a few of your vids for servicing tips and what to look for when you get one. Tips I learnt in less then a hour, don't tip em Up, use I am gaskets, ngk plugs are best, use the correct oil, double check cables before ordering, manufacturing part number is on the side, I can sharpen blades on my bench grinder. Engines are easy to remove. Cheers for you vids I'm sure I will watch more if I ever have a problem.
I want to appreciate your SON to help us watch every steps video recorded. He was a great help and he is a promising son. This is the best video on the internet and you proved to be a great FATHER involving your son with technical work. Your video is well detailed, videos, photographs, and commentary. I am from Pakistan and I speak FLAT emotionless American language. But your video is as good as your beautiful English Accent. Before I fix my lawnmover's drive I am going to buy Rosetta Stone for Britian English. It will cost me $345.00 for English (British) level 1,2, and 3. You are a great presenter. I love your English Accent. Thank you very much for uploading. And a huge thank to your SON. I am sure he will be better than his father in all prospects of his life.
My Qualcast 51cm mower stopped moving. I tightened the drive cable which worked but it's as if the cable is continually stretching. It causes a clatter as well. Thanks for video as the clutch may be similar in how it works on the Qualcast. I wasn't sure if they just used the belt tension for a clutch.
Real long shot but have you ever fixed the lower handle on a Mountfield HP470? Mine has cracked at the base where it is bolted onto the mower. But I can't get the allen key bolts out as they just keep turning without coming out and there is no access to the back of them. This has happened on all four bolts which suggests a design issue? thanks
Good video, never saw the inside of the transmission gear box. I know, those cables can be a bit expensive. I was told by a small engine tech that sometimes if the cable is damaged (the jacket cracked), you can use a piece of metal automobile brake line that you can slide over the break and crimp on each end over a good part of the jacket.
Hi, tanks for all the info. But, any ideas where to start looking to fix a self drive that is stuck in drive? All the videos I see are for those that wont drive...mine has the opposite problem. Must be simple...? Surely!? Thanks
Thanks for a very good video, loads of helpfully info, especially the tip if its going to cost more in parts v/s what you can sell the mower for, is to break it for parts for future or sell on ££ top tip ££
Hi I have a sovereign hand propelled mower the 2pins in the blade boss have come off can I still use this if the blade is tight if not what boss would I need are they universal as I am struggling to find the same one
Many thanks for all the excellent videos, long shot but my issue is within the driven wheels. The shaft spins to both wheels but I can hold them stationary and when on the deck the gearbox is spinning, but wheels don't have drive. However, if I remove the wheels then I can see the spur gears spinning with the shaft but I can easily hold the spur gear stationary whilst the shaft is still spinning. The spur gear innards look OK, could it be that the engagement "wedge" is worn? It feels like it engages OK but I don't think that I should be able to easily hold the wheel stationary with the shaft spinning - or am I missing something lol ? ... Great channel.
Great video. I left in my lawnmower the other day The self drive wasn't working great now when I leave the handle go the back wheels still turn not so much that it will move the lawnmower if I lift the back wheels of the ground they still turn will this do damage what do you think .
Hi I wonder i looked at two of your YT:s and two times there where no oil in the gearbox. But in mine it was. Is there somwebody with my lawnmover that have put in oil there as a luxary? :)
Thanks very much!! Gave me the confidence to remove the belt cover underneath, removed a MASS of debris, and a completely loose drive belt! Would appreciate some advice on the tensioning of this belt with the nut behind the cover.
My Hayter Harrier rear roller started messing about today with the drive. When you push up the drive handle, nothing happens, but if you lift the back of the mower off the ground and do it, the roller spins like it should. I'm thinking loose v-belt problems. What do you think?
Really helpful video. Can you please tell me where the self drive gearbox tension spring goes on a 2008 Mountfield SP474 mower. Mines fallen off and cant see where it goes. Thank you.
@@everettkirk8368 Long time ago but for what its worth. The spring sits vertically, one end hooked onto the plastic body, the bottom end under the gearbox. Looking down onto the gearbox you will see a small hole near where the cable enters - the other end of this hole is where the springs sits in a hole (underneath the box). The short end then hooks onto a cutaway in the black surround so the gearbox tensions the belt.
hi i have a 190cc Briggs & Stratton pro plus 21" lawnmower with Broken drive cable it was removed before I got it so no idea what went on each end nothing online any help would be appreciated thanks
I have a honda hrx that is pretty old. The problem I am having is that once i have been mowing with it a while the self propel drive just stops working in 2nd and 3rd gear. seems to work okay in 1st but then I'm mowing very slow. I have replaced both cables that run to the transmission and the belt thinking that the belt might be just old and the rubber hard and slipping. When it gets at it's worst I hear a squealing noise from under the mower. Any ideas?
I have this exact model and would like to remove the self drive and just use as a normal push mower, after watching this video could I just simply disconnect the cable from the transmission and it will disengage the self drive or must I remove the whole transmission? Thanks
I found a einhel mower put out for scrap, took it home, once I Sussed the levers out,it started first time, but,it was struck in drive, the lever on top of the drive wasn't dropping back all the way, short by a mil or two,so I just bodged a strong spring to pull the lever back, and bang self drive disengaged
Try looking for bicycle cables used and new, bikes with rear derailers in particular you'll have two long cables going to the back of the bike and at least one long housing or two going to the rear derailer and one to the break. You could usually pick these up pretty cheap online for just standard bike cable and housing they'll work with lawn mowers no problem maybe a little customizing with the ends because the housing receivers that hold the housing in place might be a little bigger than the little pressed Aluminum housing on the ends of bike cables but that's easily fixed. I also believe that you could make your own ends on the steel braided cables themselves by using a welder and then probably a little grinding wheel to size it and shape it to what you need.

Any ideas on this mate? I can’t get the big belt cover nut off. The two small screws are out but the big nut is solid, I’ve tried my impact gun but the other end of the bolt just spins, I can’t grab it with anything to keep it still (tried long nose mole grips but it’s just so short and rounded it’s impossible to grab. Any ideas before I cut the nut off with a Dremel?
Hi mate I've got a mountfield with a self propelled movement. I've got no self drive at the moment so it may be a cable issue, my only concern after watching your video is my wheels are locked currently and do not spin by hand, could this be a gear problem or something else?

have you done a video on how to completely replace the transmission box. I have a SP53 and the self drive is very weak and feels like the metal cog has worn down the plastic cog
Cable repair - 2" x 15mm copper pipe slip over end of detached cable , smear the break in cv moly grease , place copper pipe over break and crimp one side with large pinchers tightly at cable, file sharp edges from flat bit , will last years just make sure the cable is loose and does not kink when handle is folded.
This is a nice tutorial! However I have a big doubt about self-propelled mowers now. It will be a rubbish collector behind the plastic cover like you have discovered. And it would be a headache to clean it out with a massive disassembly every time.
I wondered why, I was sceptical about buying one for my small 24 litre compressor from Screwfix, when I first used it I used it with the narrow pipe supplied with the compressor cheap rubbish one. No power to the impact wrench at all really. However I read somewhere that the air pipe makes a difference delivering the air pressure to the wrench, so I brought a heavy duty 10 meter air line from Screwfix, now the impact wrench works perfectly even removes the most stubborn blade bolts, even a seized trailer wheel nut it removed with ease, and it doesn’t recharge the air tank half as much as I thought it would using it. If you’ve still got your air impact wrench try getting a decent air line for it it’ll make a huge difference, at least that’s what I found out 👍
