- The Festival of Speed's Timed Shootout is always incredible. The fastest racing cars in the world, past and present, go head-to-head on the Goodwood Hill to see who can set the fastest time.
The stars this year in this first section of the Timed Shootout at Goodwood are Travis Pastrana's crazy Subaru GL Family Huckster, Porsche's 2,000PS 718 GT4 eperformance, a March F2 car and the bonkers McMurtry Speirling fan car.

I liked better the previous years' shootout that showed the full-timed session from bottom to top. Watching the old Bentleys and Ferraris, the early F1 cars, through to the CANAM cars, and up to the electric machines made the shootout seem like a rolling history, and a race.
I feel the same! Even though this shootout was really exciting and close apart from 1st place, not seeing the intermediate splits with the speed traps kind of disappointed me
yeah that would’ve been better, but they decided to show the dakar truck for 8 mins, which would have been cool if it weren’t for the fact they missed 9 or so runs instead

Agree totally. Replacing the classics with a lame run by a racing truck was a disappointment. Too much tinkering. Leave well enough alone.
Yep, annoyed that they filmed the Toyota Dakar instead of the shootout. Missed the pre-war cars, missed some old F1’s, missed the Holden V8 supercar. Terrible TV directors this year.
I look forward to this video every year. However, I would like to see the historic racing cars that come before the faster cars. Makes a cool progression through history. Making the video an hour and half with more cars would be better than the faster cars at 45 min

I would love to see the full shootout, or at least more of it. The historical progression was more evident in the 2021 iteration and felt better, anyway still a blast to watch

It takes some time to get footage together. This is the fastest up the hill. Not the oldest.

But still, it's not a very competitive event, it's more about passion, no need to be that serious. Anyway it's not really important, the point is more about seeing more cars.
However what I really missed on this video was the permanent chrono on previous iterations and the time at each segments of the track too, I love to see in which part the pilot gain or lose speed

I think we came in half way through. Watching the old bangers is one of the best parts of Goodwood
they decided to show a dakar truck on other courses for 10 mins instead of the first 9 or so cars

Well to be fair, it was fast for sure but very unreliable in the long run!
The Chapparal 2J for instance never won a single race but set the mark for one of the most innovative Aerodynamic systems ever invented!
The Brabham BT46 took this Idea into the F1 and still holds the record for the only car with a 100% win ratio... ok granted it only raced ones because lotus doesn't seem to enjoy finishing 2nd with over 48 seconds behind the first and drivers complained about getting stones in their faces while driving behind the fan! Besides the FIA doesn't seem to enjoy innovation very much sooo...!

Gotta hand it to Pastrana, no one ever would have guessed he’d become such a champion when he took up rallying. Now, I don’t think there is anything he couldn’t excel at- always sporting a fantastic, positive attitude while doing it too. Great role model.

I have been bought up in petrol performance cars and have owned quite a few , currently running a 600 LT , F Type R , the sound and the way they perform is incredible, electric cars are just cold , but if you like them that’s great 😃

@@brentpowell7889 I'm with you on that, at the very least. But then it comes to we have to basically double the amount of categories. You gotta split them into types of cars (trucks, supercars, wagons, etc) and now gasoline / electric. But it's somewhat worth it because these EVs are insanely fast. There will be a time where they completely outperform gas cars

They don't use the vacuum fan system anymore in F1
Redbull x1 it's something like f1 without regulations. Ofcourse only in game, but data is real. F1 without regulations will be much faster mayby 15-30s per lap, but i think its too much for human reflex etc.

Yea, it's like they went backwards, and not just a few years. Maybe next year they'll get a "clock related" sponsor who knows how to set up something like that lol. Even the commentating felt off this year.
What's great to see is Goodwood is going from strength to strength every year.
So, to sum up, a 40 year old Formula 2 car comes second! A customer car with no exotic materials used in its construction and has a 2 litre n/a motor based on a production engine. Sheet aluminium, rivets, GRP, no fancy electronics, H-pattern gear change and an old (even for the time, 1982) cast iron engine block! I can't remember the duration of an F2 race back in the day but it would certainly have been more than a minute! Both first and second placed cars are impressive for different reasons.
amazing... the Speirling was one of the coolest things i've seen. it looked like it was defying physics, kind of like that car in Men In Black going around corners at 100 mph. crazy.

Such a shame that the TV directors decided to spend 10 minutes on the Dakar Toyota instead of filming the hillclimb. The audience missed a lot of interesting historic cars and touring cars in this shootout.
That McMurty Speirling is ridiculously fast and I hate electric cars but that’s unbelievable. I’m glad I won’t live long enough to see the last of the combustion engine.

There is nothing I love more than seeing the super tourers go up the hill. Always been my favourite class of cars. In fact when I was a kid my first ever motorsport event I got taken to was BTCC. Love them.
the Hoonigan Subie was absolutely amazing. i loved all of the active aero flaps acting as air brakes. Just such a cool car.
What a shame we didn't get to see the Australian Commodore V8 go up the hill especially as it outperformed a number of more technically advanced cars... and who doesn't love the sound of them sexy Australian V8's! Love this event, best on the planet...
Sad thing is that when they brought over a commodore as the chevy ss in America not many got it

I have to say, I was very impressed by the old Viper GTS and Jag group C car were as fast as there were compared to some of the newer much more modern cars! And the spectacular drive in the McMurtry Speirling... I'm speachless!

Incroyable,incredible fast car from start to finish it's another world, accelerated mc murty I did not know and I immediately thought of a delirium of Gordon Murray but no and he found his master.
Ford's super van made me remember the Renault Espace F1 and in addition there is a resemblance

With the fan making full 2000 kg downforce even while standing still, that car just warped into hyperspace right off the launch. The 0-60 should be the fastest ever. 2g or even 3g standing start!

According to its record, the spierling can do 1.4 seconds to 100 kmph which is 27.8 m/s which would be 19.85 m/s² of acceleration... Gravity or 1g is 9.81 m/s² which would make the fan car's (spierling's) acceleration about 2.02 g

Is it just me or are we missing allot of cars? Usually in the shootout video we'd get all cars going up the hill. Now it feels like I fell in halfway through it.
There were loads more in the practise runs on Thurs & Fri and in qualifying on Sat. This vid is just the final on Sun
Yeah, they played a Dakar Hilux doing a demo instead of the first half or so of the shootout, and even then I'm not sure everything was included in the shootout itself.

Can we ask, why you chose to follow the Dakar racer across multiple courses and not stick with what people were tuning in for, which is the whole shootout final??
Sponsor $$$$ makes no sense 40k people on the stream were livid just like them showing the red arrows while a record run was happening this years stream was the worst I’ve seen
Because if you want to watch the whole shootout or the record breaking run instead of the arrows, you should've paid to go there in person rather than sitting at home watching all 4 days for FREE. You're lucky they streamed the event at all let alone for free. So as its free you get what given; don't like it, pay to attend then. 🙄

Even if you were lucky enough to be at the event, but couldn't get close the actual footage of the shootout on the big screen is the same on UA-cam. Again. Just a question.

I really wanted to see Julian Majzub embarrassing some of the modern cars by putting in a better time in a 100yo car - bit disappointed with the "Full" timed shootout this year :( That being said, amazing winning run, and standout runs from the Supervan and Travis.

Mildly warm take: Travis Pastrana is the single most underrated/underappreciated driver at FoS. The traditional racing drivers and rally drivers get recognition for being great drivers (as they should do). James Deane and Co in the drift cars are finally getting recognition they deserve and obviously legends are legends (e.g Nigel Mansell).
But Travis is probably one of the best, and bravest drivers in the world. Look at his FoS runs, then also the insane stunts he's done for Hoonigan. That man is an absolute lunatic and deserves more recognition for how much he pushes the limits

I was really disappointed you decided to show the dust of a Toyota mucking about rather than the full shootout, the Timed session is the highlight of the year and you don't show the first quarter of it. I know those vintage cars aren't going to beat the McMurtry but nothing was going to beat it. Disappointing coverage.

The Spéirling is amazing. All these track focused Porches, Zenvos, McLarens, Bugattis, etc...all absolutely destroyed by the Spéirling. Hope they learn a thing or two.
@@MurseTech64 that fan technology creeped on the seen in the 1970s, it was banned simply because it beat everything on the track it wasn't fair nor competitive. The chaparral 2J was a freak of technology art back then. The speirling literally copied that old tech reformed and modernized it. That thing didn't even look real on the track, looked like the tape was sped up lol.

The McMurtry Fan Car looks like the Batmobile from the Michael Keaton Batman films from the late 80's.
I love all those cars in 2022 GFOS, especially the one that Max Chilton and Shioriko Mifune drive, the McMurtry.
Where are all the truly interesting cars?
Plenty of people can build a BEV which is bloody quick for two miles, I want to see a pre war Alfa Romeo Grand Prix driven to the limit!

Wow! Wow! Wow! That was the most spectacular racing I've ever witnessed, really exciting stuff, and OMG that car, move over Batmobile, Knight rider, and back to the future DeLorean, that was some fantastic driving, and I thought to myself, how in the world is any human able to do that, talk about out of this world courage, and skill, and to think that one day an AI could possibly, not just duplicate that run, but actually win it is going to be something to see!
So kudos to the sponsors, drivers, engineers, designers and mechanics that put that car together, I mean what can we say, they did a fantastic job, and it goes to show that when you have the best Driver and the best vehicle, you're going to win the race, and that is so true whether we’re talking about automobile racing or any competitive sport, the Best drivers coupled with the best vehicles will win the race.
So bravo and congratulations to everyone involved in the race because competition requires those willing to compete and everyone gave it all, so it goes to show that greatness isn’t just born, it's developed, encouraged, and nurtured! Cheers!🥂

That porshe is too wide, you have to drive it much slower than you can because the road is too narrow
