I found it so odd when I first heard that at the end of Sound of Freedom they don’t tell you to donate to any specific charities or organizations, but to specifically buy more tickets for the movie. I’ve never heard of any other movie, be it a true story adaptation or documentary or otherwise, ask the audience to do something like that.
It would also possibly explain the movie’s unexpected financial success. A good portion of those ticket sales could potentially just be people buying multiple tickets to artificially boost box office numbers. Truly one of the weirdest grifts I’ve seen so far.

The sound of freedom was such a success because, essentially, church groups and other special interests were buying mass quantities of tickets at a time leading to empty theaters that were sold out on multiple occasions. I have no doubt that quite a few people went to see it but, the numbers don’t equate to a good movie and are somewhat misleading.

THANK YOU for doing this deep dive on Sound of Freedom. I grew up Mormon and was very supportive of OUR and Tim Ballard when the nonprofit was first founded. The shady stuff surrounding OUR has been there for years. I slowly began distancing myself from OUR and really didn't hear much about them until Sound of Freedom. It was very frustrating to see people swear up and down the movie was completely apolitical despite it being produced by Angel Studios, casting Jim Caviezel, and marketing it as "the movie the left doesn't want you to see". Now the most frustrating part of this all is Tim Ballard seeming to get a pass on his exploitation of women in the name of "freeing children". He's getting away with what he claims to be so against. I'm sick of the narrative that Tim Ballard is some kind of hero when this entire thing has been a vanity project from day one. There is a lot more coming out about this and if anyone is interested Sam and Tanner from Zelph on the Shelf have great deep dives that go into much more detail.

    • @somewhere4132
      @somewhere4132 7 місяців тому +17

also, a big reason why SOF got so big is because people could "buy" more tickets by donating for others to view the movie. This led to theatres being sold out despite not having actually people to show up to the movie. This fueled the conspiracy even more because people who followed SOF saw the box office numbers and the actual people in the theatre did not match. Instead of looking to the call to buy tickets for other people, they just assumed conspiracy.

The marketing of "the movie hollywood doesn't want you to see" is the only notice of the movie I had ever seen. Never saw a trailer ad for the movie at all, and I go to movies a lot. That campaign was their biggest reason imo for it's success. That line of thinking got it on ALL the news sites.

As someone who's mother was talked in to getting plastic surgery for her 17 year old daughter for a more "chiseled jawline" and "stronger chin" it was 10000% not worth it. They broke my chin and jaw which lead to my first year of college with my mouth wired shut and I feel like I look worse not better. There was little follow ups post surgery. I think the doctor got a round of golf the morning after while I spent the night in hospital vomiting blood. I looked so bad a man I was sharing the recovery room with came over to apologize for whatever happened to me because it must have been terrible. Unless you need it after an accident do not fall for this please.

I worked in a faith based antitrafficking organization, we focused on adult women, working closely with law enforcement. Instead of bursting in dramatically, we would offer friendship and support as well as the knowledge that they could call us at any time and be given a place to sleep and financial support. The people working were largely former trafficking survivors so it was run much better. Watching this story about Ballard was sickening, God calls us to serve, not use victims to puff up our ego.

Sound of Freedom was massive at my small town theater that I work at, and I hated it. The message at the end encouraging people to buy more tickets made me feel gross everytime I heard it through the door. I have no doubt that that’s why it did so well, people bought more tickets thinking it’ll help spread the movie’s message when in reality nobody used those free tickets. All those “free tickets” did was inflate their box office profits, but they painted it like it was a generous donation. Why didn’t they ask for donations to help the victims of human trafficking?

    • @Travarss

This is a tactic used by the distributors of the film, Angel Studios, and it's not much different from advertisements, Oscar-baiting, "Number One Movie in the Nation!" trailer clips. It's meant to gin up hype and support. It's what movie studios do to get a return on their investment. They spend millions on ad campaigns. Angel Studios takes a different approach, but it's essentially the same thing. All that aside, Sound of Freedom is a well-done film and worth watching. The theater I saw it in was full and had sold out the week prior - as in, no more seats available.

During Sound Of Freedom I was working as a manager at a cinema. The crowd SOF brought in was insane. These people would tell every worker they could that haven't seen a movie in theaters for decades because they refuse to support Hollywood, but SOF was just too important to miss. We would get harassed about the trailers before the movie or if God forbid something happen to the theatre like a power outage. Anything wrong happened or anything they disliked was a conspiracy against them. Once a guy called me a Fat Liberal C*** because the light cue was delayed in his theatre, which can happen easily. I was able to turn it off within the first minute of the movie, but to him, I was trying to make the experience horrible for them so they couldn't enjoy the movie. Many would come see it multiple times and harass us if we weren't able to have a in depth conversation about the movie. The crowd lasted into the week of Barbie, and we got called so many names by the SOF crowd because we dressed up and built a life-size Barbie house. Living in FL is always wild, but living through SOF in FL was a trial sentence.

The film is a dogwhistle for QAnons.
Caviezel has become a prominent figure on the conspiracist right, giving speeches and interviews in which he hints at an underground holy war between patriots and a sinister legion of evildoers who are harvesting the blood of children.
Ballard himself has dabbled in Q-adjacent conspiracy theories, such as the Wayfair trafficking hoax, while his organization has far-right affinities and a long record of distorting its botched “raids,” which rely on bizarre tactics like asking psychics where to find victims for rescue. Ballard, Caviezel, and others had primed the public to accept Sound of Freedom as a documentary rather than delusion by fomenting moral panic for years over this grossly exaggerated “epidemic” of child sex-trafficking, much of it funneling people into conspiracist rabbit holes and QAnon communities.
And, ironically, an early crowdfunder of the film was arrested for child kidnapping in Missouri last July, although the charges were dropped in September because the evidence was insufficient for a conviction.

The right-wingers responded by blaming the left of essentially trying to cancel a movie because they disagreed with the lead actor's beliefs and claimed that the movie had nothing to do with politics because it was based on a true story (which Phil also confirmed). The movie itself isn't problematic. It's just dramatized realism, like so many other movies before it. One of the reasons “sound of freedom” was such a box office hit is because on the website for the movie you could purchase tickets and there was a “pay it forward” option where you could buy tickets that a stranger could claim at the theater so that they could watch for free. So people who thought that ticket sales would go towards combating trafficking would “pay it forward” but few if anybody actually claimed free tickets, leading to showings that were completely sold out to empty theaters.

Exactly. We would get random people call and try to buy 10 tickets at a time. We couldn't take payment over the phone and they would say we were liberals trying to squash this movie. They would come physically buy tickets and find the youngest employee and make them pass out those tickets. These people were always disorganized and refused to understand how things work. They would leave reviews saying we were trying to make the movie tank on purpose. Which then would prompt others to go buy multiple tickets and try the same thing. It was a nightmare. Don't even get me started on the churches that would buy 30 to 90 tickets at a time.

On the first story, I had a friend in high school with a condition that left her physically the size of an 8 year old and she got two spine extension surgeries to make her a little bit taller and help her feel more like an adult (and I believe to try to avoid chronic pain in the future). She seemed happy with the results but it significantly impacted her education as she missed months of school to have the procedure and take the time to recover and relearn how to walk. There are cases where elective surgery can be positive but it’s such a difficult and complicated thing because of the high risks involved.

@lancekeith7900 they are terms with meaning, but certain places take away their meaning or alter it.
As a self described lefist (a socialist), i can very much tell you a difference between liberals and conservatives and where they differ (societally liberals generally are more progressive on things like abortion, gay rights etc. Than conservatives, and have slightly different economic values, but still generally see the system as Being correct with problems that need working out). Meanwhile left and right are basically progressive and conservative, looking to advance society or return it to a better time.
Obviously you'll get different answers from a liberal, conservative, and literally anyone else, but these terms do have meanings, it's just a bit Grey. It's alot like most words, heck even Death. When is someone dead? When their heart stops beating? When their brain stops? When they are pronounced dead? Does a person "die" if an injury permanently and vastly changes their personality? Or other phrases like "from the rivers to the sea". Some people say it's hateful, others say it's a cry for freedom from oppression.
It's perfectly fine to be confident in your definition, it's just a personal thing, but it's a good idea to occasionally think about stuff like this because it can help you from being left behind by the constant changes in society.

With the Sound of Freedom story, I work on a different (animated) show that's on the same streaming app that is on, and my producer was really excited about promoting it cuz he had worked on it in some capacity. I can't confirm this, but he kept telling us that we should get the free tickets and go, because more people were buying tickets for other people with their pay it forward program than there were people actually buying tickets to see it for themselves. So the box office numbers are greatly inflated, because nowhere near as many people who bought tickets were actually in the seats. It was largely from big donors, like those who fund the show I work on, which is completely independently funded. So I can't confirm this, but I feel like not only was the movie's success overly inflated, it was blatant propoganda to get believers in far right and libertarian beliefs.

When you go in IG or TikTok, the most "successful" people are conventionally attractive, and those conventionally attractive people all have similar qualities. For dudes, it's a chiseled jawline and strong cheekbones. For women, it's often associated with enlarged or enhanced lower body features as well as some lip filler and/or Botox. The Bobbi situation just really irks me. I say that because she really came up out of nowhere and had access to these celebrities for her podcast. She wasn’t a professional comedian, or even an internet comedian for that long until now. The Awkward interview segment is difficult to pull off effectively. It takes a lot of time, writing, good comedic timing, and most importantly control over the environment. She’s rarely interesting or funny, and clearly can’t handle losing control of the interview and rolling with the punches. Ziwe’s show was SOOO much better at doing this sthick because of her experience and writing capabilities. Bobbi just doesn’t have the chops to pull it off.

As a registered drone pilot, this is a complicated subject. The FAA already has strict regulations against pilots who just want to have fun and do FPV drones. Now just to go to a park and fly my drone with no people around, I have to have a remote ID module to legally fly. Which means even worse battery life for a drone that already only gets 4 minutes of flight time at best. The good side of remote ID is that it shares the location of the pilot and where they took off. Allowing authorities to see where the pilot is when they do dangerous stuff like this. It just sucks for the people who want to have fun in their backyard without broadcasting a signal to the world. It also means anybody to see our location not just authorities. Which will cause “Karen’s” who think they know the law more than us registered pilots to know where we are and yell at us for flying legally

I think it is easy for those of us who are far removed to pick a side because we aren't there witnessing the tragedies ourselves - things are almost always easier to consume through a screen while being fed ideas from the mainstream news.
There are Israeli people, there are Palestinian people, and then there are the people forcing others to go through hell.
You may not like me because I'm western, and that's understandable. I still want you to know that I'll pray for your family, all the families, and all innocent people to be safe. I pray the bloodshed stops swiftly. I hope you can please forgive us that are ignorant to your pain for the stupid things we say (including me, if I've said something offensive here to you) and do.
However, there are many people in America and the west in general. Some of us are Arab, Muslim, Jewish, dual citizens, or visit family frequently. To say folks here have nothing to be angry about might be a touch wrong. America especially is a melting pot and many of us proudly live like our people or ancestors do or did. They are certainly allowed to be angry, sad, confused, and loud about how they feel. No, they are not going through the hell you are in, but perhaps they have family or friends who are and are scared for them. I would like to consider also that some folks here are simply violent for no good reason and wish for it all the time. Those people are scummy and I apologize for their awful behavior as well.
I'm sorry for all the suffering over there. I'm sorry you're suffering. And I'm sincerely hoping this all stops because nobody deserves this. Please stay safe. Even if you are mad at me or my people, I send my love and wishes for peace so families may be reunited. ❤

That sound of freedom story is wild. I knew there was a lot going on with it that was sketchy, but I had not idea it was that intense! One thing I found very interesting that Phil only discussed briefly is why the film was so successful. The flood of tiktoks about how "theatres are lying to us and wont let us see the movie, they say the AC is broken" is one thing, but the insanity of right wing billionaires buying out entire theatres for weeks on end to fraudulently prop up the film and make it seem like it was popular, when there are many videos of people checking and finding zero people actually watching the movie (even though it stated it was sold out) The manipulation and fraud around this movie almost deserve its own feature length film. Gross.

Whats funny is I worked for a theater chain for almost a decade. These places don't have enough money to replace ac parts because the systems are so massive and intense. You can guarantee that every busy weekend you will have either a broken ac unit or a projector break. It's a dying industry but people like to pretend like the theaters have so much money. No, the ceos have tons of money because they skimp with all their theaters and staff. We all worked on skeleton crews with run-down theaters for most large movie premieres. Ac issues, power outages, and broken projectors happen during every single large movie I have ever worked.

Then those people probably told some friends to see it who "paid it forward" by buying more tickets and telling friends and so on which kept the film chugging along at the box office for a while. It was the early 2000s, maybe 2003 or 2004, and my mother, older brother, and I are making our way back through the Denver Airport after dropping my dad off. The Denver Airport is this huge, insane place with a whole subway system inside it, and so the three of us were waiting for our train. My brother ended up running ahead of us into the train while my mom and I were stuck back (I don't totally recall why, I was only five or so at the time), and we watched as the doors started to close and there was no way we were gonna get there in time, so my seven year old brother was about to just vanish into the subway system of a gigantic airport all alone. We were all freaked out, and then this man jumped between the doors, threw his arms out to the side and took most of the impact on his briefcase.
It was a man we had seen earlier, and who we'd all been wary of. After all, we were in an airport, and here was this Muslim man wearing a turban and he looked every part the stereotype of who I'd been told the "bad guys" were. But suddenly, there he was, literally throwing himself in the way of train doors to help keep my family together. My mom was insanely relieved, and we were reunited.

There is a growing crisis with young man feeling loss with numerous issues and when Phil and many have called them incels which he has done in the past to try to make fun of them it achieves nothing but drives them further away. There’s been controversy that this is what largely fueled SoF’s box office “success” because aside from the opening day, Angel has not been transparent on how much of the reported box office gross was from this campaign or from people who actually bought a ticket, as well as fine print that Angel buried that said that Angel might use leftover funds for other things that weren’t buying tickets for SoF for those who couldn’t afford a ticket.
