Sanders de-escalating by speaking to two senators in a tone befitting the beligerent children they're acting as sounds like a hilarious concept for an comedy skit-
Him *actually* having to do so in real life is surreal.
What an absolute embarassment that this kind of immature nonsense is frequent enough that it'll be brushed off/forgotten within a few days, as proven by many sitting U.S. representatives in the past five years.

I was an animator on Coyote vs Acme and I was devastated to hear about it being shelved. So many talented people worked on that film for years and to have some suits decide to bury it makes me so angry. I feel that when a company writes off movies or shows for a tax write off, we the tax payers should be the buyer. They should be required to release it into the public domain. Plus I love the idea of something going viral because it is free and becoming a hit like It's a Wonderful Life which became a hit only after it entered the public domain. The board having to justify why they took a 30 million dollars for a movie now worth so much more in merchandise would give me so much of a laugh.

I feel this so hard. I've tried talking to guys about how I struggle with dating too because I'm a tall more masculine woman who is also fat. They always hone in on the fat part and say shit like "well you can change that. I can't change being short." I'm 5 years into changing it and won't be done until I'm probably 35 and covered in sagging skin. It doesn't change that in prime dating years, I wasn't desirable. Weightloss also doesn't make you shorter and who knows how feminine it makes you.
It just always feels like a slap in the face when you're trying to support someone and you tell them you have a related struggle, and they hit back with "how about you do something instead of whining."

Also an underdiagnosed, usually not well-known issue many women fight with (took me until I was 25 to be diagnosed with PCOS and insuline resistance, age 30 for the diagnosis of hypothyroidism; Doctors used to tell me to just excersise more and to lose weight)
But that is also the thing: We can suffer from weight or hormone issues, but that doesn't mean it's right to put down others who may suffer from related or different issues. We all just need to be more understanding of each other's suffering and try to help or at least lend a listening ear.

@@Windmelodie oh its very well diagnosed for me. Most people have no clue what it is so I just tell them I'm more masculine.
Yeah I lucked out in that most of the ways it causes me to suffer are that I have higher t and get hungry. Once I "cleaned up" my diet I was able to combat the lethargy at least a bit and the t is a boon because I can build muscle easier.
I'll never not have pcos though so it's really frustrating when people say "just lose weight". I do believe it's not harder, just a different kind of hard for me to deal with my weight issues. I know a guy who his struggle is dealing with emotional eating to deal with pain. We both have different but equal hards. The guy who's never struggled with his weight certainly has his struggles in life, but losing 5 lbs probably isn't his struggle so it would be nice if he wouldn't act like, because it's easy for him, it should be easy for me.
In the same way I don't tell alcoholics to just sober up. They have a disease(pcos isn't alcoholism and this isn't me saying I think it is, just that it's a hard I don't have). For me to tell n alcoholic to sober up, when I don't even like booze, would be so cruel.

I'm a film student, and one of my professors has told us to never fully trust studios. There's countless projects that he, as a person in post production, worked and finished a project that studios just never released. It honestly happens far more often than anyone thinks and people just don't know it so there's no push to get them to be released. From the PNW. I remember in school we raised hundreds salmon from eggs to eventually release into the wild. We had a huge tank in the classroom and would learn about the salmon as they hatched and grew. Then, to release them, we went to a hatchery and toured the facility, learning about how amazing it was and how they were protecting the salmon population. After that we released the fish and watched them almost entirely get eaten by everything in the river. The teacher chose then to let us know that most of them won’t make it past the next day. And it was a sinking feeling that they really are a struggling population.
In Washington every year we also have an event called “survive the sound” where everyone can participate online and choose a salmon with a tracker (we also have teams devoted to the salmon). And when they release the salmon you watch to see if yours makes it to the ocean or if it’s killed in the Puget Sound. Again, it’s very jarring to see how quickly they all die 😔😔

I was deeply moved by the insights into the salmon and how the American government and native tribes had a Treaty to protect fishing rights. As an indigenous Australian, I felt a connection to this struggle. We have experienced a decline in native species, and the absence of similar Treaties has made it difficult to preserve our cultural practices for future generations. Our storytelling tradition is integral to passing on our culture, and the inability to take our young ones fishing has posed a significant challenge. Thank you, Phil, for shedding light on this crucial issue. 12:36

It may not be in the written contract, but it's well understood by now that participation in a publicized work comes with the benefit of being able to list that work in a resume. There are so many ways people are judged or dehumanized. Taking that extra bit of time to be mindful of your own biases and affirm the humanity of those around you can do a world of good for everyone.

I like that persons one liner with the "it's hard to recognize when someone's drowning of thirst when you yourself are drowning". I was a skinny kid who had friends of all different sizes and shapes and whatever, but one of the most hurtful things was when people would project their insecurities on me and say "eat something" or "build some muscle" or some sort of comment on my weight. My parents were tall and thin so naturally i was too, and i also had access to healthy food and loved exercise and sports so I had a natural body type reinforced by healthy habits accessible to me. Not everyone i knew had a stable household or access to healthy food outside of school and could do sports because of parents not being able to transport them. Plus a lot of people just had naturally more body fat due to genetics and medical conditions. I think it was 10th grade that I started speaking up when people started making comments when I literally was just existing (I wasn't a dramatic person and was friends with most ppl in the school while not being a "popular"), and saying that what they were doing to me was the same thing people were doing to them, and how about we speak up to THOSE people starting the unkindness instead of simply passing it along. happy to say it actually worked for the most part and a lot of the people perpetuating the initial unkindness stopped once they realized it wasnt effective and those affected were actually supporting each other not continuing the BS. Now, funny enough i work as a school counselor facilitating positive/productive conversations between teens regularly.

Thank you Phil for covering the salmon crisis. I'm part of an Alaskan Tribe with a long history of reliance on the Salmon. Its "another jar of smoked salmon" even became a recurring joke at potlatches. So many cultural foods revolve around the fish. Yet I have often heard disdainful comments from family members and the community in Alaska that they live with, regarding the extreme levels of tourism drawn by salmon fishing each season. As tribal members, we're limited on how much we're allowed to fish and have special nets that you have to be on a waitling list to use! Our culture has been greatly impacted by the necessity of preserving these fish and so some people grow resentful of having to share. But its hard to blame them because outside of the tribe, its as if folks just see Salmon in the store and think nothing more than 'its another dinner option' or 'that its expensive just because its a healthy food'. Its so much more than that.

If youre at a more specialized shop maybe Ahi or Catfish? I’ve seen the footage and I agree that it isn’t normal to have your foot up that high. All I was saying was that some injuries can be avoided if you wear the right protective gear. And I’m not trying to victim blame here. I‘m just speaking from personal experience. I was the manager (don’t know how else to describe my position) for an inline hockey team for years. In one game, one of our players went for a fast break towards the other team’s goalie who then sprawled out in front of our player to stop him. It was a very dirty move because our player was going full speed. He wasn’t even able to put out his arms to break the fall so he fell chin first to the ground. He was always one of those guys who said wearing a helmet with a face mask was for pussies and bad players. He reconsidered after getting stitched up in the hospital. He wasn’t the only one to talk like this and reconsider his attitude afterwards. It happened frequently.
I know protective gear does not protect you completely, because there are other factors. But it helps.

The river I live near used to carry so much salmon it was used to feed the poor. Niw we've had decades of a project trying to reintroduce it to the river but only one has ever been caught since then. The dams on the way up are still keeping the fish from returning and their spawning grounds still are overly managed and canalized.

I think the answer is that it’s just not a common occurrence or a realistic threat at the skater (I.e., non-goalie) positions. Most youth players grow up using neckguards, but those are designed primarily to protect against the much more common threat of a puck or stick in the throat-not really to stop skate blades.
There are turtle neck type devices now that purport to help against skates, but unclear on how these would protect against the more realistic threat of structure damage from a slapshot or stick that the older style neck guards protect against.

As someone who’s been playing hockey since 5 and have been on skates for as long as I can remember, Matt Petgrave moved very atypically on Johnson to make contact. Never, ever, in hockey has raising your leg in a ju-jistu like fashion been a part of the game. And although he may not have meant to clip Johnson in the neck, the game of hockey very seldomly brings your feet off the ice. Petgrave had enough time to realize he wasn’t going to make proper body contact and lifted his leg to slow Johnson’s zone entry. Adam was left defenceless because a move like that is not part of the game and he could not have forecasted it.

Bloat, corruption, incompetence exists in every single country on the planet in abundance. The USA is no exception in either direction. Whatever country you are from or in is also no exception. So, that a group would propose and try to carry out a stupid or self-serving solution is inevitable. The only hope is that there is enough freedom/activity in the press and engagement among citizens that it gets called out and addressed. There is also the issue of saving face, where a culture or a country wouldn't want to look stupid and so would not make a fuss about something like this.

The structure of the US government is fundamentally corrupt; between FPTP voting, gerrymandering, the unequal representation arising from seats in the House, Senate, and Electoral college all having flat representation for states regardless of population, which results in idiotic situations like Wyoming citizens having ~70x more power in the Senate than California citizens.
The end result of that is that American politicians can safely ignore the wishes and welfare of a majority of the US population, and suggest these idiotic expensive solutions when there's a more popular, more effective, and cheaper alternative clearly available.

In the beginning most if not all the students supported them, but as it went on the staff decided that the only way to get their point across to the university board was to antagonize the students. They would tell us they understood that we were not responsible and that they would make sure we would still be prepared for our exams. Theyd tell us they wouldn't be striking or only striking on certain days and tell us to be up and present for our early morning lectures. Then just not show up, multiipler times and we would keep coming since everytime they would say it was a mistake or for XYZ reasons so we would show up again the next time. Then they started antagonizing us via email and on campus in person, by the end they got the students to hate them to such a point that students started advocating for the university and against their original point completely. The response "It is not meant to be used that way" is so baffling it actually upsets me, this feature on their website is clearly being used for that, the company clearly knows about it, they just don't care, they don't care about any of the victims as long as they stand to gain something from it. The goal of every contact sport (edit, nah, every sport, not just contact sports) is to entertain the rich at great risk of irreparable harm to the players.
Most people lose their dopamine hit though when they really think about it, and suddenly sports aren't very fun.
