Once I received flash flood alerts on my phone. My neighborhood has a creek that floods readily. My daughter had just gotten home from school and was there alone. I emailed the boss asking to get off 15 minutes early so I could catch an earlier bus home.
The manager responded telling me I should already know that I need to request time off 2 weeks in advance. He scheduled a meeting with me for 1st thing next morning to formally counsel me on the leave policy. I came into office before he did and went to his boss. His boss was LIVID and chewed this guy out.
To make things worse, this lower manager STILL WANTED to counsel me on leave policies.

I had a manager who tried to write me up because I called off work to take my father to the emergency room. She was on my case about "You did not give two weeks notice for wanting the day off" and had the write-up filled out. I said "Well I'm sorry but medical emergencies do not give two weeks written notice ahead of time! I would love it if I got a letter in the mail telling me that in 2 weeks at 2pm on thursay the 25th my father will need the emergency room. Having that much warning ahead of time would make it MUCh easier but this is not how medical emergencies work" and that was when the real boss walked in. He didn't even look at the write up as he grabbed it, tore it up, and threw it away. He told me I did nothing wrong, that life and emergencies happen, and to take that day and the next 2 days off, then fired up the computer, helped me put in for Sick Pay, and approved it. Then he turned to teh manager and told her "That is how we handle emergencies here" Boss even let me go sometimes to get dad home from appointments, and would authorize me 4 hourrs of sick pay. We didn't have any vacation or pto accrual, so letting us take sick pay for the days was how he gave us paid days off.

I don't understand why sitting is a problem if the work gets done.
In the last few years I have some issues that make it very painful to stand long periods. My work required me to walk long distances and then spend about 15" with each patient for 1 1/2 hours. There were four of these treatment cycles in 12 hour tours. There wasn't a lot for me to do during most of that time. I would sit and chat or ask/answer questions about their concerns.
Once after I had finished and was in the office documenting, etc. a supervisor said "You shouldn't do that, it's disrespectful. Stay on your feet like you're paid to do!"
Yeah, the manager had to explain how nothing in my contract required me to stand. And that there had been no patient complaints.

I had something similar happen to me at a former employer. I had to do a quick component test, so instead of taking 30 minutes to program the controller, I grabbed two manual controllers, pulled up a chair, and ran the test manually. While I was sitting there, doing my job, one of the higher-ups came down to the shop floor (almost never happens) and demanded I explain what I was doing. I told him, showed him the test control sheet, and pointed out where I was in the execution of the test. He still wanted an explanation of why I didn't use the PLC controller, and by the time I finished explaining myself, I completed the test and started wrapping up. Overnight, all the stools and chairs disappeared from the shop floor.

I worked for a company who didn’t give us specific times to start and finish e.g. 9am-5pm. Just as long as I did 8 hours and finished my assigned tasks. So I came in earlier in the mourning so I would finish earlier in the afternoon and get home before the mad rush hour traffic. Only when the boss found out he started telling me to stay and "help the other teams". I expected that he would pay me overtime but he didn’t. When I refused he threatened he with disciplinary's, sacking and when that didn’t work he played the guilt game... "we're a team here, we all help each other, you're selfish and your attitude is becoming a serious problem." It was obvious he just wanted free labour. Iv never felt so elated when I finally left that company.

At most levels within a UK company, they are generally unenforceable. Preventing a person from working within their industry is restraint of trade. For both the company's sake, and yours. One, you're leaving the company with extensive knowledge of the in and outs of said company. Knowledge that is highly valuable to its direct competitors. That's the company's side. What's yours? Well, I believe you wouldn't like being employed by a rivaling company only to be let go the moment you told them about all of the company secrets you've brought with you.

Furthermore, if you decide to jump ship and chose a competitor who only wants to suck you dry and spit you out, that's on you. You should be able to spot this strategy; if your only value to them is what you have learned about their competition, then that should be pretty obvious.

I had two jobs in a row where I was treated like absolute trash, and I only lasted one year in each of them. I decided going into my next job that I would change something:
    I would stop being nice.
Seriously, I played so nice at the previous jobs, always took responsibility even if something wasn't entirely my fault, was a team player, tried very hard to communicate, etc. Now, at this new job, I'm a total asshole. I nitpick my boss's instructions, argue on the regular when I get conflicting information, and probably the most common thing I say is "Just so you know, you have told me to do this x way, and I have told you y would happen, but you insisted that I do it x way. So I'm going to do it x way and will refuse all responsibility when y happens." And of course, this happens all the time. I'm not totally unwilling to stay late to help get things done when they need to be done, but when the boss asks me to stay late to fix a problem that was CREATED BECAUSE HE DIDN'T LISTEN TO ME, then I refuse and clock out at 5:00. Not 5:05. Not even 5:01. 5:00.
And overall it has worked. I'm not super liked here, but my boundaries are respected, and my boss knows better than to push me on certain issues. He's not happy about it, but at least he knows he can't do anything about it.

It's more I feel like I can get all my work done for once), she comes up with BS tasks that eat into my time and make the day harder.
Idk the sass comes out now, people who pretend to be nice just to get under your skin and use you are my personal "worst people."

I've been in the corporate world almost my whole career, which started in 1996. I was fortunate enough to have a pretty cool boss when I first started, who told me that if you allow if, you will be walked all over by most people in this environment. She said being friendly at work should never be construed as friendship. Call people out professionally, and do it in writing. If i was asked to do something that is shady or weird, always ask for clarification from the person having you do said shade. She had been around forever at that time, she liked me, she knew my dad.
Today, with texts & stuff, its so easy to screen shot stuff. HR is way bigger these days. Its a professional environment, so people should act like professionals. Theres no harm or shame making people answer to their own abhorrent behavior.
And this dude is right. When some nobody gets a tiny slice of "power", if they are thin-skulled enough they will wield this power. Don't let 'em get away with any dipshittery on the job.

I used to work in mining here in Western Australian. By law, everyone should attend a pre-shift information ( PSI ) meeting each day. to ensure everyone knows what has gone on in the previous shift and any changes made to normal operations. I had been off work with a workplace injury and when I returned to work, I had to get the all-clear to do so. So, I missed the first PSI. The next day, I missed the PSI because I had to fill in some paperwork at the mine medical centre.
On the third day, I made it to the PSI and was sitting in a chair waiting for the meeting to start. Suddenly, my boss was standing beside me, asking me to stand up. I thought he wanted my chair, so, me being me, I told him to get his own f*cking chair. Then he came out with the most stupid thing I had ever heard. He told me that the company wanted us all to be standing during meetings because research had shown that "people are more invested in the process when they are standing!" I still refused to stand in a room full of bench seats and plastic chairs.
After the PSI meeting, I was called into the office to fill in an incident report over the "incident!" I refused, of course, because there was no incident. Then I had to go to a meeting with the mine manager and a woman from HR, who looked and acted younger than both of my own kids. They tried to coerce me into doing the incident report - again I refused. So I was stood down, on full pay!
I was driven back to the camp and left to my own devices. I don't watch TV, so I drove into the nearby country town and bought some books, went to the pub and had lunch there and got some beer as I left. I spent the next three days reading, sleeping, eating, drinking beer and going for long walks. On the fourth day, I filled in the incident report, but it was all gibberish and made no sense to anyone living - or dead! And was thanked profusely for doing that!
Then they held an investigation into the "incident", involving me, the mine manager and one of his flunkies, all of which resolved nothing. I think they knew that might have shot themselves in the foot by paying me for all this time off and even more so when they said that I could go home for rest of the week, again on full pay.
As soon as I got home, I went on line and in no time flat, I found out that this nonsense came from the HR department of the Riverside Campus of UCLA in California and had nothing to do with people being more "invested in the process" at all. They had simply found that if you make people stand during meetings, the meetings are considerably shorter! So, cost cutting!
I continued bringing a chair into the PSI meetings. And in case you missed the true import of this story, I was on full pay for 7 days after being stood down for not standing up! 🤣🤣🤣

Not accommodating that is counterproductive. I feel like it made my EEs more focused and ready to work when they had time to deal with their personal lives.
I also wouldn't let anyone work over 10 hrs (2 hrs) OT. Many wanted to work 12 or more. I felt that those hours past 10 were unproductive because they were tired, unfocused and often led to mistakes and burnout. Plus, it gave me leverage to ask for additional staff to manage the workload since excessive OT is a financial burden on the company.

At first, I changed from 8 hr shifts to 16 hr shifts, sleeping in my vehicle (restricted parking garage) during the 8 hrs between. When the location was shifted an additional 5 miles away from my home, the new manager (post-derivatives crash type) changed the schedule to 12.5 on, 11.5 off. Parking was now an open lot, so no longer safe for 'car-camping'. Additional changes (I was now alone on site overnight) and passkey only access to toilets(frequency monitored). I found a new employer closer to home, at higher rate. (2/3 of us resigned within the same 6 months.)

Apparently the mice only go to my bin and completely ignore the kitchen bin. What is even more stupid is all their food scrapes go into the kitchen bin and stay there for a week. One thing to bear in mind for the second part involving "too much sitting down" as well. It is ILLEGAL to use CCTV cameras for anything other than their intended use, which is NEVER to spy on your employees. Too many people are unaware of this and could do with it being pointed out, therefore any circumstance whereby you are dismissed for anything where the only evidence is the CCTV footage, lands you a good chance of being able to sue at the very least. The other thing to note with CCTV footage, are only authorised personnel are allowed to view it. In most instances this means the owner and any security personnel as well as the person actually in the video at the time, no one else!

There are some exceptions whereby that is the intended use (can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could find some). But these are very few and far between and for the most part you would not get the licence to be able to do that. In that instance as well, you would have to have a reason to spy on your employees and whether or not they're sitting down wouldn't really come in to it... So although it wouldn't then be illegal for your boss to have used the CCTV to see if that was the case, for them to cite it as a reason to dismiss you still isn't really acceptable. Hope that helps.

    1) It's all about control. You aren't doing as they want, so they'll lord their position over you.
    2) It's all about the rules. You aren't doing as "the rules" say, so they'll chastise yo.
    3) It's all about misplaced blame. They're having a bad day and you are a (supposedly) easy target.
The only even remotely acceptable reason for the bereavement one is if she's on a critical project that could cost the company millions or even sink the company entirely, and even then, try and hire an outside consultant first, and then a professional courier second. Sending an employee to her relative's grave should not even be on the list.
As for the last one, it's easy to lose grip on reality when you don't talk to the people who would be directly affected. On the one hand, offering more hours and even overtime _could_ be a solution, but it should be run past both the employees affected _AND_ Accounting. I'm sure the bean counters would probably tell you that bumping the pay would be better in the long run, both for morale and for taxes.

I have to agree and to pick up on the sycophantic point that Ben made, I had a couple of bosses that I worked in the same department as that were team managers, totally narcissistic, ignorant, arrogant and just plain evil too. I did on occasion have to deal with them as my manager was off or out the office. This was a total nightmare as they would belittle you at every opportunity but they didn’t realise that I was taking every time they dealt with me and recorded it in writing “just confirming what they were wanting me to do. This was thankfully not often and was made up by the fact I was not in their team and a lot of the things they were trying to get me to do was shady and could get you fired & prosecuted. I managed to hang off and give them replies once my manager was back, there to back me up and I luckily got the good one, she soon put them in their place. Loved this and was so happy that she was brilliant and a great boss and now a friend too since I left there over 12 years ago now. It was a bank btw so legislative process rules and laws had to be very strictly enforced or you could be fired or at least disciplined……. There was one particular occasion back in 2009/2010 when we had the severe snow and ice with the snow being at least 1.5m to 2 metres deep and living on a farm meant that I had to dig the snow from the yard, out to the access road then down to the main road in the town where the farm was next to. This was in Scotland, so the snow was falling deep and fast too !!!! I got up at 5AM & by 8AM I had only done about half of the complete trail and the snow was falling fast as I said do that every 20-25 minutes I had to redo the entire thing to keep on top of it all too. I called in to the department and got the more difficult and nasty one of the two Gremlins and he said that since he managed to get in he couldn’t see why it was a problem for me to get in ?? Bearing in mind that he lived in the West End of the city where the office was only a 20 minute train ride direct to the edge of the Business Park that we worked at. I told him that it would take at least another 5-6 hours to get there and I’d be soaking wet and my legs would be in a very bad state as I have ulcers on them and no skin, this was relayed to him and he said to get in and stop making excuses. I said to him that I would carry on and get there when I could. I also sent him photos of the current state of my legs and those photos were very very graphic and I knew he had a very weak stomach for gore and blood etc. I eventually got to the building at 15:30 just 2 hours before the end of my day. I immediately called 999 to get an emergency ambulance to come and take me to hospital to get my legs seem to as they were bleeding profusely. I said to reception who my “department manager” was and got him down. He started to berate me and talk nastily and said I’d be put through the discipline procedures when I got out of hospital…… oh how wrong he was !!! I was kept in for 4 weeks and had another 14 weeks of therapy recovery and relaxation at home to get to a point where I was able to get back to work on a stepped and regulated basis. When I was back full time I was taken through the disciplinary process but little did that smug manager know that it was going to be him going through the procedure. i had all the letters from hospital and the recording of thr call between him and me, he forgot that the call was recorded as every call should be…….. He was given a final written warning and would remain pn his file with HR until he left the bank. He's still there but being so very careful now !!!

I had a company make me do an online 'Ethic's course' - I wasted 40 minutes of my life getting lectured on ethics by a company that has been busted for attempting to strong arm a government. At the end of the course you have to choose whether you agree or not... Just for the shit of it, I chose 'No'. I got a shit ton of e-mails from increasingly senior management (Irish, European, Global) that were sounding increasingly like e-mails from a desperate dumped girlfriend, until I arrived at 'Senior Vice president of Legal affairs and compliance'. I basically laid out my stand by arguing 'Whose ethics are we agreeing to exactly? Since a corporation isn't sentient and therefore subject to the whims of the board and shareholders, any CEO that stood up at the AGM and said he was pursuing an ethical course instead of the more profitable one would be unemployed before he got off stage. Also the board are hardly representative of the population of it's home country (the US) as being based in Connecticut you have one of the lowest ethnic diversity of any of the US states. Board members of any large corporation in the US are in all likelihood WASP (White Anglo-Saxon & Protestant), third level educated, highly paid and by dint of their position possess adequate health insurance, which puts them at a distinct advantage over the vast majority of the population of the US. So their ethical stance will be different from the majority of citizens of their own country, let alone a country that may have differing sociological values." I then went on to mention that there are medicines available in the EU that it's illegal to export to the US as they are used by the US as part of the execution process - so who's ethically right there?
I got an e-mail back thanking me for my input and 'giving food for thought on ethics' and most importantly it concluded with 'So take it as read that there is no need to sign the ethics declaration. (I honestly didn't expect that.)
On the 'too much sitting down' - the answer to that would be 'Under the data protection act, CCTV is for safety and security purposes only, it is not for time keeping, attendance or discipline.' I've had a manager try to fuck me over using CCTV claiming he'd been watching as I was constantly on my I'phone (when he said this at the disciplinary meeting, our senior manager raised his eyebrows, as he knew I've never processed a smart 'phone). So I challenged the junior manager - 'show me the footage'.
To which his reply was "I don't have to"
'You're making an accusation, so yes you do.'
"Errr. oh um... it's been deleted since I checked"
'No biggie, you said I'm 'always on my I'phone'. So there must be other examples, as 'always' means 'continuously'. So, any other example in the last 28 days will do.'
"Er. Well it's complicated. There's other people in the footage and it may violate their privacy... under the data protection act."
'Ok if you'd like, I'll make a formal request. That'll legally compel you to produce the footage within 28 days.... would you like me to put that in writing?'
"Are you calling me a liar?"
'No, I'm merely stating fact. I can legally make a request for any footage containing myself from the 28 days preceding receipt of the request. A lie is statement willfully made with the intent to deceive... if such a statement has been made with the intent to damage my reputation in the presence of a third person that is slander.'
At this point the senior manager decided to put an end to his juniors misery and turned to me and said "For fuck's sakes, just show him your fucking 'phone." before turning to his subordinate and saying "As for you, you're in enough shit as it is. Apologize, then shut the fuck up. Consider this matter closed." He turned back to me "Still want that footage?"

I had a job in a manufacturing facility once where they made and machined various car parts like clutch plates. I left after three weeks for a host of reasons, including lack of training, training I got was inconsistent, moved from job to job every few days, expected to do the work of 3-4 people every day, and the kicker is that I had hired in just before holidays and when we went off shift for NYE, was told by supervisor, "Oh, reminder, when we come back next week, it will be 7 days a week and if your relief doesn't show up, you have to work their shift too until someone can take it over. That also goes for if nobody takes over and the next person doesn't show up, either. You stay until you are relieved."
I just walked out, took my badge to HR come early the following Monday (I was on 2nd shift), and happily quit. Shift started at 3pm. Got a text from my supervisor at 3:01pm, asking if I was there at work. She knew full well that I left my phone in my locker while on the production floor. I replied, "Didn't anyone tell you? I quit earlier today." Why didn't you tell me? "Because I figured HR would trickle it down to you like Reagan's trickle-down economy." She kept it up for a few more minutes, and I told her the reasons I left. "Well," says she, "Honestly, I think I'm a pretty good boss." I stared at my phone because I couldn't believe she just said that....I tried to tell my fingers not to, but my fingers went all digital diarrhea on me and replied, "I've had worse bosses, but I can't remember when." Not a peep out of her afterwards.

5:26... My wife had to go to the wake of her mother, getting calls on her personal phone all day with the boss asking questions about work. In the past she has told him she was uncomfortable being the only person in the company to handle international salaries, and has asked for a backup for years. All that time the boss denied, and that meant she could never take a holiday for more than 5 days.
Now she was in church during the funeral, and while her sister was doing the eulogy, she was in a car outside of the church on her laptop working because the boss needed some info NOW.

I was in a job where the Executive Director told me I could be a few (5) minutes late since I was a single parent. I was not asked to, but always stayed at least 5 minutes later if I were late that morning. The vast majority of days I was on time or early. As the first to arrive, I was expected to start the coffee, which was out of sight of the main office. The OM's brother worked in the building next door and could see our main office from his. He would report to our OM if he felt I was late, not knowing I was around the corner putting on a pot of coffee. Got accused of being late many times.
    I laugh about it now.

I know this vid was months ago, but #3 reminded me of a place I quit in January. I do apartment maintenance, and the main office of this company checked everyone's time 2-3 times a week, and if you clocked in even 1 minute late, they would send the report down to the property manager and have them "have a talk with you" and warn you you will be written up. Even worse, you had to log in on a special app and take a selfie to prove it is you, and half the time the app wouldn't accept the picture, sometimes up to 10 minutes.
Then there was the working supervisor who did little work. Sit in his office for 2 hours, then go drive around in his truck taking pictures and sending them to us for us to do. My last straw was when he took a picture of a full trash can, sending it to me and the other guy. Instead of just taking the bag to the dumpster 40 feet away, just took and sent a pic and left. I turned my crap in, clocked out(with a selfie of course), told the manager I quit, and I went home.

I definitely have a terrible boss, i found out my mom AND step mom both have cancer, the AC at my house went out, and my kid was getting trouble at school. So needless to say I was having a terrible few weeks and wasn’t getting any sleep at night due to stress and no air conditioning. Because of all of that my production at work may have dipped a bit, I have been here 7 years and worked my butt of for them doing anything and everything. My boss is 100% aware of everything I was dealing with at the time but instead of cutting me some slack I got called into the office and he said “if there is not an IMMEDIATE increase in productivity then we will have to let you go.” But the part that really got under my skin was when he said “you know how hard it is with everything you are going through right now, well imagine how much harder it would be if you don’t have a job” took everything I had not to jump out of my chair and smack him. The fact he knew everything and knew exactly why I haven’t been running at 100% and still said that on top of talking down to me in there was my final straw. I have been looking for a new job since.

If you need to leave for a smoke break then you have to add that time to the work day. So my husband the smartarse went out to the smoke break area to find the manager smoking with the boss, who (i s*** you not) told hub to get back to work, smoking isnt allowed. He ignored the manager and lit up and said im following your example. Either we both quit or we both get back to work. Boss laughed and said hub had a point n walked off. Every single team lead has been beasted getting to where they are, and they think that they need to then beast everyone below them to even more harsh standards as a means of further impressing the management above with getting a few extra boxes out of the door. Management meanwhile is looking an entirely different set of metrics.

I never went back. No call in, no show, only time ever in my life I've done that. When they called me 2 weeks later to ask if I'd be in, I told them no, told them why, and told them to mail my check. Nope. That's not how relief work works

Here in NL we have had flexible work hours for decades. There's generally a frame set start between 7am-10am but even if you come at 10:30 and you have your team informed and they are fine, it's fine. Just be a honest and fill out the actual worked hours that's the least that an employee can do. It is so useless to argue over 4 minutes when no customer was waiting -- if you have an appointment with a customer being late is unforgivable imo (but that's my Dutch and German genes). But when you even lie about it is really sickening! Pure power abuse!

Ah the second story reminds me of this one manager I use to work with. I made an agreement with one manager I worked with to have A Sunday off (as having a Sunday off is equivalent to having a million dollars). I was wanting to go to this meditation class to help with my stress and anxiety (That I have gotten from this job.) These classes were being hosted at this one Buddhist temple but only were hosted on Sunday mornings. So the manager agreed IF I worked the next two Sundays. I agreed and we shook on it.
That Sunday came and I was woken up to my phone going off I saw a whole host of text and missed calls from another manager asking where I was and how I was scheduled. I texted back and politely said I had a deal with the other manager that I would have that day off since I worked the other Sundays. In turn she blew up my phone and started to harass me to force me to come in. Well I grew tired of the toxic attitude and held my ground for once and said no and that I had made a deal and that I wasn’t coming in. She then basically cursed at me and fired me. Not to long later my GM called and wanted me to come in to talk it out with her. To say the least I was fired for fifteen minutes and the other manager had a slap on the wrist. Thankfully I had left that hell hole but that story still sticks with me to this day. 😂

Absolutely the worst manager I worked under would request a meeting at 9:30. As you walked in at 9:29, she would press send on a pre-written e-mail, reminding you that you were supposed to be in a meeting with her. She literally kept an individual notebook for each person in her department, in which she would note all our professional "crimes". The entire department (nine people) resigned at the end of her first year as department head. She was fired. Before she left she deleted the department's entire section of the server.

I'm so glad listenting too these stories there the employees sayimg: "I'm done. And the chefs are starting too regret the behaviour."
    Some people shouldn't be a chef/boss.
I have one too at my work. Everyone hate her. I have only heard about 1 person who can handle her and there are like 50-75 people, but everyone else hates her.
Last thing i heard she was doing is that she was showing one of our employees the middle finger for no reason! And the employee who was given the middle finger too hate her really bad from earlier so we were talking about it in the break and four of us was agreed that none of us do like her at all for several other reasons. I could be doing that for my bestfriend for fun, but there is no way i could be doing on the work towards any employees. Unless they knew me very well and understood that i was joking, but i would never be doing that at the working place in case some of the customers would see that. That kinda behaviour shouldn't be at any working place. I get that she is getting feeling that he don't like her, but there is alot more events then just this one that has happend because of her.
She is so disrespectful, have no patience, and alot of times she seems too be angry for no reason. I get that her job could be stressful, but late other people have her job if she can't handle the stress. Several times she is stressing up the other employees that is out of their control. It takes some time too making the food ready. Getting it ready. But still she will asking about several times. And i know in fact that she was given me a complain about i'm beeing too slow and got the same reacton from that are now currently favourite shiftleader too, but he figured it out why. When i'm doing a job i'm not lazy, but a perfectionist. When i'm doing anything. I'm doing it very well. And they can trust me about it beeing done probably. So yeah it takes me few more seconds, but they seeing the results. The customers are very happy how the restaurant are looking. No complaining from over 2000 guests after one night.
Everyone else that are shiftleader are smiling, having good times, joking around with their employees.
If i had too be working with her everyday i would quit the job, but luckely i'm working every second saturday with two of my favoruite shiftleaders.
Both of them has asked me every time about can i be working more since they both like me and i'm doing a great job when i'm there so. It's painfull too say no, because i see that they have really missed me each time, but i'm gently refuses it because there are limit how much time i can be working under NAV. And it's a safe income for me, so i don't wan't too disturb it somehow or working too much there i'm risking too lose it all, and then again not having full time job.
I could most likely get a full time job, but my health ain't there. So i could do a combo, but don't know.
I like it how my life are right now with having a young disability salary plus this sidejob with these guys every second saturday night too sunday. Love it!
I'm making more then enough for my self and i don't need too be so stressful about it.

I have managed people for nearly 20 years now.
There are 2 simple rules for everyone - myself included.
    1. Family comes first
    2. When you are working work hard but when you are on holiday that’s your time.
This nonsense of asking for 15mins, or contacting employees on holiday just shows how pathetically and egotistical people can be.
