If you are looking for a system that is as close to the original as possible with the added ability to output in 1080p for modern TV's and have the extra $$$ to burn...the Mega SG would be the obvious choice. If you already have several original Genesis units and just want something to plug and play on a modern TV for as little $$$ as possible...the Hyperkin is an absolute steal of a deal.
Or you could just get an after-market component cable and use that. I did it with HD Retrovision's YPbPr cable for both the Genesis and Saturn. All I needed were adapters for both (I have a Model 1 Genesis). Still cheaper than buying SCART or JP-21 cables, a SCART or JP-21 switch box, and a Framemeister. Sure, it's analog (no pun intended), but it does the job. I bought HD Retrovision's cable the day of launch with my own money, and have not looked back.
The Analog Mega SG is perfect. But for the price the Hyperkin Genesis is not that bad, just the picture quality is darker and there is a frame skip in the audio after every 30 are so seconds. Great video!
iVirtualPlays: I have a Model 2 Genesis hooked up to my framemister. I’m Interested in the Analog consoles just for longevity, and to run emulation on them also.
Mega Sg has much better audio, and the video looks crisper, but for the money, it's hard to throw too much shade on the Mega Retron HD. I'm a fan of FPGA, though, and the fact that Analogue is coming out with a DAC for their systems to use on a CRT/PVM, combined with Sega CD support makes me go with the Mega Sg. Mine just got here today.
I got the Mega Retron HD when it came out and was pleased with it. Then I got into HD Retrovision cables through the RetroTINK 2X. I finally got the Mega SG a few weeks or so ago and I actually use all three ways of playing Genesis games. I bought my first Master System game Double Dragon to use with the adapter with the Mega SG. I am really pleased that it worked well. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of these options. As long as you are enjoying it, then it doesn't matter. Great video Ron!
I wanted a Hyperkin one for quite a while because of its abilities to play multicarts, everdrive and Virtua Racing but the multiple negative reviews of people saying that it would die after just 20 minutes of playing had me terrified to buy one. But I’m glad I waited a few years because now it seems like they are working properly, at least mine is as of the time of this comment.
Still got mine and is still working great, btw guys if you have an everdrive search this rom hacks Street Fighter 2 (color and sound improvements), Sonic Mania, and Scott Pilgrim (Streets of Rage Hack)
I had to read the comments being an audio guy. I noticed the retron was louder and it made we wonder if psychoacoustic masking would affect what people think. This is simply the theory that generally people find louder music sounds better when compared. To my surprise most of the comments enjoy the Mega Sg. To my ears it almost sounded as if the retron added clipping while the Analogue made sure to keep the sound normalized. Interesting video and comparison. I like the SG but I’m slightly biased.
I noticed the Mega Retron has louder PSG than the Mega SG. This means certain sound effects and square wave instruments will be louder in the mixing with FM than what we got in the original system. The Mega SG can customise the audio levels and settings so if the PSG is too loud you can soften it, or if you want it identical to the Hyperkin Mega Retron mixing level, you can do that too so all in all, the Analogue Mega SG wins!
The Analogue SG sounds like an Emulated Model 1, super clear and nice sounding. The Hyperkin sounds like on of the Model 2 revisions with slightly muffled audio and not the cleanest mixing. Both look acceptable, and both sound like official Genesis hardware, even if one is clearly lightyears better in the audio department. No AtGames here. Really which one you buy depends on if you want HD Sega CD, or if your a total audiophile. Or feel like spending the extra money for slightly better video/audio and probably extremely better build quality
There seems to be some issues with the Sega CD at the moment, which I'm sure will be fixed in future firmware updates. The scary issue is some people getting a shock when touching a Mega SG that's attached to a Sega CD. I haven't tried using my model 2 Sega CD with the Mega SG yet, and it will probably be awhile before I do. They're talking about this on the Atari Age forums btw.
