Only saw that after seeing the huge amounts of testimonials saying the Hyperkin HD cables do the same thing too, which is such a shame because I would love their cheap all-in-one solution for some of my consoles. How have your clones and cables held up over the years?
Thanks so much for the kind words, I greatly appreciate it! I've not had issues myself, however, I will say I tend to use actual hardware with HD Retrovision or Insurrection Industries SCART cables going to a RetroTink2X Pro or OSSC more than I use these clone systems now. That being said, I have not had issues of them failing over time.
That's their home base of operations if I remember correctly from my conversations with them. I want them to be in more stores, I think they have a very good product line. I just wish more people had access to actually see them and touch them in store, know what I mean?
FWIW Mega Retron HD does not properly render shadow/highlight effects. This adversely impacts games like Vectorman and Ranger X and does impact gameplay e.g. Ranger X stage 2 uses these effects for the cave lights that protects you from enemies. I suspect this is the case for other clones as well. If it weren't for this issue I would have kept the Mega Retron HD.

The Minigen HD here must have been an older model. The sound on the one I just got today is like the HD Retro Game, not perfect and with a little extra volume on the PSG, but fine. Sonic sounds good on it, so the one in the video definitely is outdated. It also has a J/O switch on the back now, I guess yours didn't have it either. I'm glad they updated stuff on it. Awesome show down of the clones systems.... Original hardware is always better..... And the retro bit component cables make the sega genesis even more awesome!! Sega 4 Life
@ResidentXombie i know....been a sega genesis since 1989...my first bought game for the system was mickey mouse and the castle of illusion...best game ever....
The Mega Retron HD is definitely the better clone. I have one and I've been enjoying it quite a lot. Since we're on the subject of awesome Sega products, did you hear that Retro Fighters is making a modern Genesis controller that will be built to work on both the Genesis and Saturn with 3D controller elements designed in? If not, I would look into it. It may make a good topic for another video on your channel. ;)
To me, the original Genesis looks and sounds way better. (Sounds like you had a Mega-Amp installed in it, which really helps out a model 2.) The OSSC is certainly pricey, but you can use it with lots of other consoles so in a way the cost is spread out among them.
To a point, but I've not been happy with the way the OSSC handles Nintendo consoles. For the casual player who just wants something simple that works, there's merit to these systems
Yeah I like these type of videos, I've heard that the genesis model 2 is not a good variation of the console. To save money Sega dumbed down the sound chips of the genesis they even started to do this on the first model. So any companies that can successfully make their clone consoles sounding good get my vote. However I was hopeful that the Mini Gen would do well as it looks good.
Minigen gamepad looks identical to Sega 6- button , , but the mega Retron has way longer cord , , the shape of mega Retron gamepad shape is ODD looks like they tried to combine a Genesis controller with a SATURN controller , , ,hmmm 🤔😸 overall my pic would have to be Mega Retron HD because it can run Virtua Racing , , , even Genesis 3 console can't do that , , , keep rocking Rox 👽👍👍
That's a awesome video my friend. The Megatron hd by hyperkin is much better than the gamerstak. But of course I perfer the real Genesis Hardware. But the Megatron is spot on I have to say. Once again is just opinions. To Megatron hd is the better clone Genesis but then again is the real hardware is the winner. Of course you can test the Genesis without earthworm Jim. The big plus is the Megatron hd can play viurta race while the gamerstak do not. Of course both clones console do not work with Sega CD and 32x. Otherwise Megatron hd is spot on as the real. Genesis.
if u get another game for 32x i say get knuckles chaotix.. its really good.. i had it back in like 95.. best 2d "sonic" game imo... the mechanics take some getting used to but once you get it, it's really fun
AtGames didn't make the Genesis Mini, that was Sega themselves. But AtGames did build an HDMI-equipped clone system that could play pre-loaded ROMs and cartridges
well, you see this is hard for me to decide while the hyperkin is better in my opinion from what I saw but at 17 more dollars than the minigen is definitely more my speed from 2 reasons 1 price 2. I am new to this hole retro thang was not around during the '90s so if it's, not 100% right I don't really care
Both are really good systems. I'd say the main thing is how important is Virtua Racing. If not at all the Mini Gen HD is good. If important know that it won't play in the Mini Gen
@@RoXolid yeah, but this system has been cloned since the mid 90's... by 2020 they should have figured it out. They're just avoiding spending money on R&D by using the cheapest crap available
@@sparkster7744 you should also keep in mind that the Target customer for this type of item just wants it to work. Things like having the pallets being off or sound being off isn't as big of a deal to this target audience as a hardcore retro gamer. If you know what an fpga or an osc is, you've already surpassed this system
I'm skeptical about the accuracy of the Minigen HD audio, unless he had an older model of it. I just got mine today and though it can't handle all the deep percussion and has slightly high PSG, Sonic sounded way better than this video showed.
Hands down the MD had better games, better tech and was released years before the Snes. It's CPU was so quick It could do scrolling effects in software no mode 7 chips needed.
As a retro console collector I have to say , your Sega Gênesis model 1 it’s not plugged true the best connections! You did the comparison in the worse connection possible composite on the genesis it’s REALY BAD! , the best way to connect the genesis it’s true RGB or S-video , and also the controllers the hyperkin it shape like a Sega Saturn controller model 2 , and the minigen the control shape like the genesis 2
I didn't use composite on the Model 2 Genesis, I used HD Retrovision component video cables, pretty well respected for their quality. Also the OSSC doesn't accept Composite inputs, you have to use component, VGA or SCART. Since SCART isn't common in the USA, even though I have SCART cables, I used Component due to the fact you can hook those directly into your television.
Actually, the Sega Genesis 3 produces a good composite picture. Via the Retrotink the results are very nice. Obviously RGB/component is vastly superior, but saying all Sega Genesis produce bad composite is strictly inaccurate.

@@RoXolid I found it on Ebay and I bought it and I bought two games for it toy story and Aladdin for it and I'm excited to get it and play it
Yeah I like these type of videos, I've heard that the genesis model 2 is not a good variation of the console. To save money Sega dumbed down the sound chips of the genesis they even started to do this on the first model. So any companies that can successfully make their clone consoles sounding good get my vote. However I was hopeful that the Mini Gen would do well as it looks good.
Thanks Paul!
Does the game saves on levels?
Which game are you referring to?
@@RoXolid in general I mean I haven't played in a while but I remember in sonic 3 I believe you had some levels that kept as your progress went on?
Not that I recall
@@francorottier8221 Games save on the cartridge. It doesn't matter what system you use.
Minigen gamepad looks identical to Sega 6- button , , but the mega Retron has way longer cord , , the shape of mega Retron gamepad shape is ODD looks like they tried to combine a Genesis controller with a SATURN controller , , ,hmmm 🤔😸 overall my pic would have to be Mega Retron HD because it can run Virtua Racing , , , even Genesis 3 console can't do that , , , keep rocking Rox 👽👍👍
wow that sound for sonic on the clones was pretty bad.. not bad enough to make them a bad purchase, but noticeable
Great Video Man! Me I would get the Retron HD..
Thanks so much!
U should try the retro freak
I don't think the Retro freak is in production anymore, is it?
That's a awesome video my friend. The Megatron hd by hyperkin is much better than the gamerstak. But of course I perfer the real Genesis Hardware. But the Megatron is spot on I have to say. Once again is just opinions. To Megatron hd is the better clone Genesis but then again is the real hardware is the winner. Of course you can test the Genesis without earthworm Jim. The big plus is the Megatron hd can play viurta race while the gamerstak do not. Of course both clones console do not work with Sega CD and 32x. Otherwise Megatron hd is spot on as the real. Genesis.
They are both good systems, but the Mega Retron does have that extra little something across the board.
The hyperkin megaretron hd sounded the coolest
It does a decent job for the money
That HD retrvision
It's amazing, isn't it!
if u get another game for 32x i say get knuckles chaotix.. its really good.. i had it back in like 95.. best 2d "sonic" game imo... the mechanics take some getting used to but once you get it, it's really fun
I own the Genesis mini from ATgames
AtGames didn't make the Genesis Mini, that was Sega themselves. But AtGames did build an HDMI-equipped clone system that could play pre-loaded ROMs and cartridges
well, you see this is hard for me to decide while the hyperkin is better in my opinion from what I saw but at 17 more dollars than the minigen is definitely more my speed from 2 reasons 1 price 2. I am new to this hole retro thang was not around during the '90s so if it's, not 100% right I don't really care
minigen aka gamerz tek
Both are really good systems. I'd say the main thing is how important is Virtua Racing. If not at all the Mini Gen HD is good. If important know that it won't play in the Mini Gen
@@RoXolidProductions yes I saw this however I don't like racing games never have never will ...
and yes I have played racing games so...
@@jeremiahherron5895 Then the GamerzTek will be great
Why do these cheap clone consoles always have terrible audio :/
It's the System on a Chip setup. Unlike an FPGA it just doesn't replicate the audio correctly
@@RoXolid You're right, I guess a regular consumer wouldn't tell the difference and most importantly it's not Atgames levels of bad
The Mega Drive/Genesis had a good library, but I would not say it was better than the SNES'
@@RoXolid snes is for kids ..genesis for teen/adults
I’ll never buy another Hyperlag console. The winner is the Analogue SG!
Get Mister and you don't need overpriced cables or an OSSC
Unless you don't like pirating games and would rather have a physical collection.
