RoXolid Productions I'm pretty sure the master system and I'm assuming game gear games can be played through the everdrive if you hook rhw console up via composite not hdmi
if I'm going to play via component cables I'll just hook up my regular Genesis or Master System and play through there if that makes sense. At least that way I can play through RGB scart or component video cables from hdretrovision
It's actually nice of them to get a sega genesis/master system close system right for a change. I know a lot of them have had their problems with regards to playing certain games but its nice to see that they have focused on getting this machine to play as many games as it possibly can and its a fair price point that it could appeal to a lot of gamers that would be interested in this clone system to begin with.
I streamed removing the casing for the original power base converter and tested out some Master System games. Using HDMI it inverts the colors unless you run it in PAL. Using composite cables and NTSC-U things ran fine. The 3D glasses and light phaser games worked fine as well with a CRT and composite cables.
You didn't mention it in the video but the text in both Street Fighter at the 7:00 mark and Castlevania in the background at the 26:00 mark is hosed. Some pixels are wider than others. It's all outlined in threads on both AtariAge and Sega-16. These games use the 256x224 mode of the Genesis. I reported it to Hyperkin back in early November on Facebook and they were going to "possibly play Street Fighter" but never did get back to me. Not a surprise, I guess.
I didn't mention it because it wasn't something that I noticed. It was something that, as I was playing, did not detract from the game play value to me.
@Karl Burnett no, composite is fine. It's the upscaler. It's stretching the 256x224 image to fit 320x224 BEFORE scaling up to 720p, resulting in every 8th pixel being stretched to be twice as wide as its neighbors. @RoXolid Productions - try playing Street Fighter in E Honda's stage. It's super distracting.
Pretty amazing that a guy sends you an EverDrive, recommends a game to you in a letter he wrote to you, you read the letter of him recommending the game, and you don't actually test that game, even though it's exactly one of the games you HAVE to test to know if the system is above board (the largest Genesis game ever made). Baffling.
I think Hyperkin has done a pretty good job with the Mega Retron HD and the Supa Retron HD. Is it on the same level as an Analogue clone? No, of course not. However, if you have a cartridge collection, these clones get the job done. Nice video Gary :)
Hey I finally had my Suparetron arrive today. First thing I noticed was you have to really muscle in that controller and game into the ports, maybe that gets better over time with more use. Also, i got in the habit of hitting reset just to bypass that really unnecessary blue brand intro screen. What a strange design choice. I played Mortal Kombat II and noticed that although it looks and sounds spot on, the controllers really struggled to accurate handle those precise button inputs for the moves. I may trade in the hyperkin snes controllers for real snes ones if it helps. Thanks for your good information on helping me make an informed decision!!
I just bought one a few weeks ago, and I LOVE IT! One minor weird thing with mine though, the controller it came with doesn't register as a 6-button. It only ever works in 3-button mode. The OG Genesis controllers i have work perfectly so it's not a huge issue, just something odd I happened to catch with mine.
Cool review dude. I'm happy with this console. I noticed your RC Driver magazines on the wall. Those are cool. Aside from video games, my other hobby is RC.
This truly is a remarkable clone system. The price was already good enough, but the quality exceeds that by far. The fact that it plays Virtua Racing alone is proof that Hyperkin really wants to step up their game in the retro market and they should be applauded for that. Yes, for those who will argue that Analogue's upcoming Genesis console will be better, I agree. I'm planning on getting that console purely for its support for Sega CD and Game Gear library (possibly the 32x whenever they decide to), but I still bought the Mega Retron HD simply because its a good console to pass the time until then. Since its small it's also perfect to carry around with you if you decide to bring it to a friends house for some quick Golden Axe or Streets of Rage action. So even with Analogue's console around the corner, the Mega Retron HD still has a purpose other than being a cheap alternative. :)
The Master System Games work perfectly but only if you connect the Mega Retron HD to the TV via the composite cables, not the HDMI cable. (YES....! the SMS Everdrives work on the Mega Retron HD)
My mom recently found my Sega Genesis Model 1. It was hidden deep in the caverns of their garage. Sadly the controllers don't work well because the ports are old. And I can't seem to get the components to come out right on my 4k tv. Anyways I have about 20 OG cartridges, and I'm really interested in trying this Hyperkin Mega Retron. I would love one of those EVER DRIVES. How many games do they carry on them?
Everdrives act as Flashcarts where an Sd card reads the games as actual carts. They can fit the entire library on them. Krikkz doesn't include sd cards, just the shell.
I bought this system an I really like it one of the best gen clones out their an for the price you can not beat it a really good gen clone an great channel gary really enjoy your content
X-men 2 begins you in the game, the title screen happens after the beginning stage. Virtua Racing is fast and responsive, Star Fix, while cool, runs under water in comparison.
Funny thing about Castlevania: The New Generation, in the US the game is called Castlevania: Bloodlines, and the title screen shows blood dripping off the word, but they censored the PAL versions because they didn't want the word "blood" to appear in the title. Of a game about fighting vampires. They also changed the blood to water on the title screen. Thank you for this review. I kinda want to pick this up, but I'm also debating getting the Analogue Genesis clone, so we'll see. I might wait a little longer before deciding. The Hyperkin model is definitely more budget, and works great for pretty much anything I'd want to play, but the Analogue model is sure to be the Cadillac of Genesis clones.
Indeed. Everything I've seen points to it being a great system. I was saying for years that if Analogue made a Genesis I'd be all over it, but then this came along, and I started asking myself if I really wanted to pay that much for the Analogue system when this one runs pretty much anything I'd want to play, and does it well.
If cost is no object and you want the absolute best possible, go Analogue. If like most, however, you are on a budget, this is a very good solution. A good in-between, and possibly superior, would be a Retro tink 2x, HD Retrovision cables and a Model 1 Genesis.
Is anyone experiencing rainbow banding on theirs when playing on a CRT? I just got mine and rainbow banding gets pretty bad on Phantasy Star IV in particular.
At the time, virtua racing was revolutionary as games were all about polygon shapes. Same as in virtua fighter. Compared to the arcade original and the fact that this ability was not, to my understanding, native to the genesis, I think it was great! Note there were other games that used polygons such as race drivin’ and hard drivin’ . But again, the genesis as far as I know couldn’t handle it. That’s why in virtua racing they used an extra chip to help smoothly produce the visuals.
Completely agree. Look at Star Fox, same idea with all the polygons, just spaceships vs cars. I just don't think it's a good racing game is all. And I love me some racing games!!
This thing really rocks and proud that I bought one. One crazy thing that I made is to make a weird adapter for my recently bought 32x because I want try out. It confirm it doesn't work really well because when I put the 32x version of doom some of the layer background is Missing because there is no cable design for the hyperkin. But hey I least I try however it does with Genesis during my experiment testing. See Virtua Recing in action is really super awesome. Other than is super great Genesis console so handsdown this is best Sega Genesis clone by far. Still I prefer my model 1 Genesis but hey is just me. Great awesome video and keep up the videos.
@@RoXolid yeah it is true. Because the 32x works like this. The Genesis make the background layout and 32x made sprits and foreground layout. Yeah it is complex but that's was learning during my experiment with my 32x. There is more information about the 32x but I can't tell it because I'm working episode about the 32x. I hope my little information is useful.
I bought a mega retron HD and the HDMI output stopped working within just a few plays. The composite output also stopped working. No signal to TV whatsoever. I was really disappointed because I have the SNES one from Hyperkin and it works fine.
@@RoXolid I have reached out to them before about a faulty RCA cable that came with my Supaboy, I had nothing but restraint from them even going so far as to tell me they did not believe that I actually bought the system new and had gotten it somewhere else. Their customer service is run by juveniles basically
@@robocop2283 Do me a favor, email me at RoXolidMail@gmail.com, I'll forward your information to my contacts with Hyperkin. We'll get you up and running!
I had this same issue. I ordered mine through a third party seller on Amazon. It stopped working after 30 minuites or so. Luckily I was able to return it for a full refund. I'm sad the quality wasn't better. I really enjoyed the product for the 30 minuites when it was working.
They're considered systems on a chip (SoC). These try to mimic the performance of the original hardware but don't worry as much about authenticity. The Analogue systems are field programmable field arrays. These can basically be custom programmed to perfectly emulate and recreate other integrated circuits.
I'm having issues my mega retron HD, I plugged it in and it works great on the TV plays great through the controller. But I'm having audio issues the sound is only coming out of one speaker and don't know how to fix that
Have you tried different HDMI cables or a different TV? If still no fix is suggest reaching out to Hyperkin, sounds like a warranty issue which, unfortunately, sometimes happens. However I've had really good experiences with their customer service.
@@RoXolid yeah I did try a couple different HDMI cables and still didn't work, my other systems work just fine through the TV and speakers. I'll have to do that, talk to hyperkin. Thank you for the advice
if you are looking for a CRT my recommendation would be just to buy an actual Genesis and HD retrovision component video cables, not to go with something like this and try to S-Video mod it
X-Men 2 on the Genesis starts like that. It's not the Everdrive. Even on an original cart you turn it on and it starts you with a random X-Men. After you beat the first level you get the title screen.
Great review. I'm really impressed with the detail you covered. As for Master System games it is not due to the EverDrive. All Master system games have that issue in NTSC mode. You would have to switch to PAL or use the composite out instead. Do you think this is the best Genesis HDMI clone so far? How do you feel it compares to RGB on a real Genesis?
I mentioned the Everdrive fix in the copy below in the more info section, I just haven't tested it yet. It's up there, I need to side-by-side test to see for sure, but it's a very good system for the money.
RoXolid Productions I didn’t get the cables, for some reason I find that a bit steep for just a single system set of cables. I’ll keep them on my wish list though!
good review I looked up that version of bloodlines you got out of curiosity I don't Know why anyone would want to play it they censored everything in it your better off with the US release.
Hey gary dont forget old skool games now has there classiq N hd (there own nes hdmi clone out!!!) Please pick that console up and do a should you buy review on it!!!
(love your reviewing stuff, my criticism is just about the device) Considering the price point, you gonna bet that you have nothing to complain about this device....but no, there's one, huge problem: the goddamn Hyperkin catridge pins' technology ("Perfect Pin - Patent Pending" they say....), who makes the cartridges so hard to put out at the point that you can seriously risk to break your cartridge! That's a typical problem for all Hyperkin clone consoles (Retron HD, Supa Retron HD, Retron Duo HD, Mega Retron HD, Retron 3 and Retron 5), even their FAMICOM to NES adapter has the same problem! So they wanna get a patent for their destroying technology? LOL, are they drunk or something?
Only on the games themselves that feature that. This is Hardware, not Software based, so it has the same capabilities as an actual Genesis regarding that
@@RoXolidthe Mega Retron HD has issues with games that use EEPROM memory for saving. I unfortunately found this out recently. I was playing Wonder Boy in Monster World on my genesis 2 a few weeks ago, and the console died on me in the middle of a play session. I then ordered the mega retron, to not just replace the genesis 2, but to also finish that game in particular. And unfortunately, the mega retron can read the save on the cartridge, but the game will freeze on the retron if I try to save my progress. It also occasionally freezes in the main menu after I died in the game. I did some research and found out that all genesis/megadrive games that use EEPROM save memory has issues with the retron. Technically the game is playable, but difficult to finish due to the inability to save the game. I’m considering other options to finish this game, by either getting a mega everdrive or getting the wonder boy collection for Switch.
Switch the switch to make the system play 50hz and master system games will work but pal . also wonderboy, you always need two buttons to jump higher mate. Anyway good vid mate .
I have both, and while I frequently go and play Star Fox I don't know that I've ever thrown Virtua Racing in once just to play. And I love racing games
@@RoXolid www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting/comments/2gyz79/retron_5_steals_opensource_emulator_code/ Gee, clearly this flew over your head. They stole code and maybe if you actually looked into it instead of being a prick, you would know better.
I knew exactly that you were referring to the Retron 5. I own a Retron 5 which I have had since January 2015. That horse has been beaten dead a million and one times. They have fallen on that sword repeatedly and addressed it in the past. My point was that this is hardware, not software, based. But perhaps that flew over your head?
I didn't think I was being a prick in my initial response. You pointed something out, trying to be funny and take a shot at Hyperkin for the Retron 5. Like I say, that horse has been beaten to a pulp, the glue made from that horse has already dried out and stopped sticking. It's like saying people shouldn't buy a Ford car now because of the Edsel. Hyperkin has addressed in the past that they handed the development of the Retron 5 OS off to a 3rd party, and they didn't do their due diligence when checking the source code. But throwing that "Did they steal the code again" line out there (A On a Hardware and not software bases system and (B Years after they addressed it wasn't clever, it wasn't funny and it adds nothing to the conversation. I'm not a Hyperkin fanboy, you can see plenty of videos of my reviews of their products where I'm extremely critical. Each new product gets evaluated on its own merits, as they deserve. They have made products, like this, which I really like, and they've made others that I've been disappointed in. There's no telling if there's even a single person who worked on the Retron 5 had anything to do with any release after it, let alone this one. Was the Retron 5 handled the best way possible? Nope, I think even Hyperkin would admit that. Have they tried to do better and learn from that mistake? I don't think you can argue that they haven't. What you are doing is no different than people who, in the heat of an argument bring up something from the past such as "Yeah, well you left the toilet seat up on New Years of 2010 and I fell in!" just to make a point that the person being argued with is a rotten SOB. You can paint with that broad of a brush if you'd like, life's too short for that sort of animosity in my life.
It'll work with reproduction cartridges, but if you're just going to be running multi carts and such you'd be better off with a retropie, it'll be less expensive for you
please you can test:ecco the dolphin 2(usa,japan),ecco the dolphin 3, and batman animated series?. ¿Works o.k? ¿Black screen?. if black screen try this game genie code with the games: 1.AAAA-AADJ 2.72AA-ACDL 3.RNAT-A61R :).
Honestly it doesn't look good imho. The pixels are blurred like the scale-up is using some bilinear filtering. That is totally unexceptable for a retro clone console. People who buy that things are most often people who love pixels. I'm not a perfectionalist cause then I'd buy an analogue ng but even for the price of the Mega Retron HD you can expect at least pixel perfection.
I would disagree with your premise that "People who buy that things are most often people who love pixels". The target audience for this are those who want to play their Genesis/Mega Drive via HDMI and tend to be a more casual enthusiasts and aren't aware of things like RGB/SCART/RetroTink/OSSC/Analogue. Convenience is often more important than pixel-perfection.
@@RoXolid People who actually still have their old 16 Bit games are most likely retro-lovers. The other ones simply sell their old games to buy some new fancy games because they have no love for the old 16 bit stuff and some of the old originals give a good buck in sale. And the guys who have the love most likely want the real thing as close as possible (e.g. pixel perfection for example). People who have still old 16 bit games and want to keep them but at same time give a damn about the quality of those games when played aren't really a big target audience I believe. I mean who wants to simply revive his childhood memories can play those games on an emulator or an raspberry pi and doesn't need to invest the money for a retro-console.
@@zzador You are right about them being retro lovers, but I think you are extending your own biases on to others. I don't doubt your passion, but don't assume others have the same level or desires. For example, do you know how many people buy those AV2HDMI adapters? Or the 480i HD Cables? A TON! And depending on the desires of those who purchase those, they can be sufficient. Would it be for me? Not on the AV2HDMI adapter but on some of those HD cables, they serve my need and purpose. Do they look as good as Component video going into my OSSC? Nope! But I also don't play them that much so, again, they're ok. And playing on a RetroPi relies on stolen/pirated software/games, where if someone happens to find their old Genesis in their parents basement or attic they can then go to play them in better quality and just have fun. And the fun part is more important than being pixel perfect. Always has been, always will be. And that's ok. I have no doubt from your points this is not a system for you, but for others, yeah, it does a decent enough job.

I bought a mega retron HD and the HDMI output stopped working within just a few plays. The composite output also stopped working. No signal to TV whatsoever. I was really disappointed because I have the SNES one from Hyperkin and it works fine.
Zach, reach out to Hyperkin, their customer service is really good. They should be able to get you squared away.
Are these systems considered emulation or hardware emulation or is this FPGA? What's the difference between what Analogue is doing and these?
They're considered systems on a chip (SoC). These try to mimic the performance of the original hardware but don't worry as much about authenticity. The Analogue systems are field programmable field arrays. These can basically be custom programmed to perfectly emulate and recreate other integrated circuits.
@@RoXolid Thank you! I'd be curious to compare the Supa Retron HD vs Super NT
No difference, the Super Analogue NT will be leaps and bounds better
That sucks, let me know if you get it figured out
@@RoXolid will do thank you
So you have better quality low res option for crt as well as hdmi
if you are looking for a CRT my recommendation would be just to buy an actual Genesis and HD retrovision component video cables, not to go with something like this and try to S-Video mod it
Weird issue with Everdrive going straight into Game?
Could be the ROM, I dunno.
X-Men 2 on the Genesis starts like that. It's not the Everdrive. Even on an original cart you turn it on and it starts you with a random X-Men. After you beat the first level you get the title screen.
Weird, thanks for the info!
I would buy it if it was available here in England but sadly Hyperkin haven't even released the Retron 77 over here yet, so it's just a waiting game.
CastleManiagames.com ships internationally!
I didn't realise the console would even work in PAL regions. Thanks for letting me know.
Yessir!
How does it stack up to the gamerztek?
Both are strong systems, I have a comparison video planned with side by side AV comparisons planned
Sounds good! 👍🏻
I did pull the trigger on the retrotink, so I may not be looking at clones any longer....
If you have original equipment that's a great solution when combined with HD Retrovision video cables
RoXolid Productions I didn’t get the cables, for some reason I find that a bit steep for just a single system set of cables. I’ll keep them on my wish list though!
Is the ring sound a bit laggy and distorted? Or is iy sometging else?
It sounds fine, it may be compression from the render or UA-cam compression that might cause a little issue
good review I looked up that version of bloodlines you got out of curiosity I don't Know why anyone would want to play it they censored everything in it your better off with the US release.
This version was under $5, it was a repro which I'm fine with.
After watching this defo gonna pick it up. Thanks for the recomendation shame you didnt play Alisia Dragoon in the demonstration lol
I'm working on a comparison video between the Mega Retron HD and the Mini Gen HD and I plan on featuring it in that footage. I'm filming this tomorrow
Hey gary dont forget old skool games now has there classiq N hd (there own nes hdmi clone out!!!) Please pick that console up and do a should you buy review on it!!!
another great video sir.
Thanks John!
Can you use original genesis controllers?
Yes, you totally can!
@@RoXolid thanks
Is this console still holding up well? I thought about buying one?
I haven't used it in a while, but I've not had any issues to report.
@@RoXolid Thank you.
Does anyone know if the 8bit do m30 works with this console?
If it does I'm definitely buying the retron, cheers :)
As long as you have the receiver there's no reason it shouldn't
@@RoXolid fantastic! Thank you :)
You're welcome
Man how did I miss this? ^-^ maybe I'll talk my GF into buying me one for my birthday (Oct 31) lol
Stereo or dual monk or mono? Hardware or emulator?
Stereo and hardware
(love your reviewing stuff, my criticism is just about the device)
Considering the price point, you gonna bet that you have nothing to complain about this device....but no, there's one, huge problem: the goddamn Hyperkin catridge pins' technology ("Perfect Pin - Patent Pending" they say....), who makes the cartridges so hard to put out at the point that you can seriously risk to break your cartridge!
Is it better than Gamerz Tek Mini Gen HD?
I am actually working on that video now. They are both really good systems
@@RoXolid Oh, thanks a lot!
Can you save game progress❓
Thanks, I have that information in the Read more section, Jason, who provided the Everdrive, passed on that tip.
@@RoXolid sorry mate I just watch the video and didn't read the description.
It's ok, nothing to be sorry about. Most people don't read the write ups, just letting you know that we got it figured out :)
The genesis version of Virtua Racing is way more impressive then star fox it is still great fun
I have both, and while I frequently go and play Star Fox I don't know that I've ever thrown Virtua Racing in once just to play. And I love racing games
Did they steal open source emulation code from libretro again?
if this was a system that dumped the ROMs and ran software emulation that might be funny, I give you a D- for originality
@@RoXolid www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting/comments/2gyz79/retron_5_steals_opensource_emulator_code/
Gee, clearly this flew over your head.
@@RoXolid Must you be such a condescending prick about it?
BTW speaking of TMNT I think you sound quite similar to Raphael.
Really?
Svideo mod would be nice
What do you mean?

Virtua racing doesn't look any worse than star fox
It's not just the looks, the gameplay isn't very good where Star Fox still is decent IMO
A S-Video mod
Why would you need an S-Vidro mood on a system that natively outputs via HDMI?
Everdrive👎 emoção é soprar o cartucho e colocar no console, se for pra ter everdrive é melhor jogar em emulador!
