Which do you prefer? Some bits and bobs didn’t fit into this video - it would have been an hour long haha but I should mention recording ProRes internally is a great tick in the GH6 column! Did I miss anything else? 📸
@@TwangThang57 that's a really great point. you can get close with speed boosters on M43, but for the true focal length for vintage lenses, full frame is definitely the way to go
GH6 for its superior video features and internal codecs (I like the CFexpress-sue me 🙃). I’m hoping a GH6 successor with PDAF is out before too long, although I’d like to see the accuracy of PDAF combined with the more natural default transition speed of DFD (I know you can change this in settings, but shifting the default would make for a more usable range IMO). That said, at this rate the S1H’s successor is almost guaranteed to be a game-changer, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see it before the next GH camera. If anything gets me to switch to full-frame, it’ll be that 👀
@@gitpho I think Panasonic is well aware of their chance to put a dent into the market now. So I think they attemp to pump out new cameras with pdaf pretty soon.
I've found your channel just a week a go and I'm already addicted to your videos. Beautiful flow of information without the needy UA-camr attitude and excellent sample footage make you the queen of MFT. Thank you!
Thanks Emily! At this point in time I’d choose the GH6 as I’m sticking with M4/3. But truthfully I’d choose neither as I’m holding out for a G9 upgrade. I’m more photo centric so the GH6 is too much video camera for my needs.
Hello Marlene, its your fault that I bought a Panasonic G9 to go with my GH6. Well not all your fault alone. A friend of mine, who is a retired photojournalist, has a G9 and same lenses as me and we both walk round the same park photoing the same subjects. And hers are superior. Lets gloss over the fact that she did all this for a living and is far better at this than I am.
Your summing up is so perfect. S5 II is a content/business powerhouse (as was the orginal!). The GH6 is the most serious video creation tool you can buy under $30k. I've been a cinema shooter for 30 years; it still manages to blow me away 5 months in.
Hi there - Thank you for this review. While I am a novice to the technical functionality you explained, the visual demos you provided were very helpful. I am self-learning cinematography and I want to buy a camera dedicated to this and knowing the GH6 does not need a tripod for stabilization is great. They both seem to be amazing cameras and a big step up from an iphone. Thanks again💫
Thank you for this comparison video, I am a GH6 shooter so it is good to know these facts. With my GH6 I am starting to look at PL Mount lenses to supplement my bag of vintage glass to prep for the future if I ever decide to add a non-MFT camera to my arsenal again. I believe with the open gate 5.7/ 5.8 modes available in high quality codecs it is a worthwhile investment in some new flavors of glass.
As always, excellent quality review and comparison! Your videos always makes me excited because you really show your love towards cameras and contents in your reviews.
so glad i discovered this channel a few days ago. persuaded me to finally buy a mirrorless 4/3rds camera. (lumix g7 as thats what i could afford right now) fingers crossed i can get a s5ii by the end of the year. it's also nice to see another female filmmaker/freelancer in the manchester area!
Nice review. Thank you! 👍 There might be a small mistake on the crop info 8:00. From the specs sheet 4k 30 fps should also be available in fullframe mode. Which is probably quite important for many users.
After 8 months do you lean towards one camera over the other? I leave for Japan early November and I have a gh5 and was thinking if I should wait more on the future of these cameras or pull the trigger. I RARELY travel like every 4-5 years. And so buying a camera now would be a dumb spontaneous buy or worth it. I typically use just 1 wide lens on a gimbal for broll and then have a 17.5mm voigtlander I use for the rest (sometimes use the zoom function). And yes 2 prime lenses with no autofocus but I LOVE the results I saw from this video on the s5ii. Makes me want to just pull the trigger and sell my Gh5 stuff asap lol. Thanks for the video.
We got an S5ii for the business to compliment the gh6. With minor colour correction the footage matches perfect. Overall having both of these on deck is 🔥
@@MicroFourNerds What can they do to improve on the G9? It broke my heart to see it selling for 1/2 price. Good for new buyers though. Also love the GX85 (marked down to 80 outside of North America). Wish Panasonic put in an audio Jack. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Nice video, thanks ! What would be your choice of lenses for S5 ? What lens did you use in the first autofocus example ? The background on the S5 looked so creamy :)
The Lumix 50mm f1.8 on the s5ii and the lumix leica 25mm 1.4 (but I set it at 1.8 to match) on the GH6 😊 That whole set of Lumix 1.8 primes is brilliant on the s5ii!
I've been eating up content about the S5ii since it came out. For the few extra features, I'm holding off until the S5iix comes out. Loved your side-by-side comparison. Thanks!
Considering the paid upgrade for the S5ii to get external RAW is almost identical to just buying an S5iiX, it doesnt make sense to me to buy the base S5ii. You're future proofing yourself with the S5iix with the all Intra, RAW and pro-res options I cant really see needing another camera for many years to come after this one. But I'm the same as you, lapping up S5ii videos as die waiting for May.
The S5ii is the best panasonic has in terms of a one camera does it all, it'll appeal to a lot of people prepared to jump into a new system. The GH6 seems to be aimed at m43 users who needs to deliver in 4k or vertical format where the 5.7k opens up post cropping doors. It's overkill for me where I'm delivering in 1080p typically. Personally I would love it if Panasonic just came up with something like a GH5 mk3 where it has the dual gain feature of the GH5S, kept the IBIS with the added phase detect AF, maybe throw in a few extra h.265 codecs but otherwise that would be perfect for someone who wants a video centric camera and doesn't need to deliver in 4k.
Great Video. Thank you. Switching from Canon to Pana Lumix S5 II and 2 bodies, would you recommend 2x S5 II and also with Sigma 60-600mm for Tele or 1x S5II and 1x GH6 with 100-400mm as Tele and for video and photo?
Hi! Very good timing, I’m testing and comparing the sigma and the m43 equivalent for a video right now ☺️ I’m going to Kenya in September for safari and wanted to see which would be best for my needs. So far, the sigma is lovely on the s5ii but SO SO SO much bigger and heavier. I’m leaning towards the 100-400 on gh6 for super zoom needs as you get more reach and it’s much more compact. But the s5ii will be better in low light due to the great iso performance of that camera
@@MicroFourNerds That's great to hear and thank you for the ultra-fast reply. 🙏 Thinking about this combo: GH6 + Leica 100-400 S5 II + 24-70mm F2.8 + 50mm F1.4 + Sigma 20mm F1.4 Weight = around 5 Kilogram Or S5 II + 24-70mm F2.8 + 50mm F1.4 + Sigma 20mm F1.4 S5 II + Sigma 60-600mm Weight = around 6.450 Kilogram Size and weight are PRO GH6 + S5 II Combo But different chargers, filters etc and not only 1 system So I am asking you (any myself ^^) if the better low light of the S5II is worth the size, weight and also money. And what about IBIS? Is it better / more stable when GH6 + 100-400 is used or when S5 II with Sigma 60-600mm is used? S5 II and Sigma comes also with better AF I think. A really hard decision!
@@Lifetogo good news, they take the same batteries so only one charger 😁 I honestly struggled to take anything handheld with the 60-600 sigma, you’d definitely need a monopod for support, which isn’t the end of the world. You can quite easily shoot handheld on the m43 100-400 as it’s just so much smaller and the stabilisation is even better because the lens has stabilisation too, with it being lumix lens. so you have dual stabilisation with that setup. For low light, if you’re shooting a lot at sunrise/sunset, and need a faster shutter speed, the s5ii setup will be brilliant. So definitely pros and cons! A plus for the gh6 that I think is often overlooked is the 4k 120p with no crop. so fun with the super teles for wildlife/sports etc
@@MicroFourNerds Thanks again. Happy to see your video and the battle between the lenses on your channel. And enjoy your safari in September to Kenya. Maybe we see us ^^ Thinking about Tanzania / Kenya around August / September right now. :)
Great video. Thank you. I am a Panasonic S5 Mark II user and I have one question: is there a way to play or review photos jumping from 10 to 10 photos, like in Canon or Sony?
Great Review! I having a hard to decide. I still using GH3. Was going for the S5iix because of full frame. But what the point if it crops and doubles my lens. I ll be shooting mostly at 4k 60P
Nice video Emily! I have the GH6 and I am thinking about getting a 2 camera for my wedding vid business. Do you recommend me to get the s5ii or another m4/3 camera? I see that you use both for photo and video, but in my case I only do video. Thanks for the advice and keep doing these awesome vids
Ooo I’d probably recommend sticking with m43 if you already have the lenses! I tend to shoot weddings in 4k 60p a lot of the time and the apsc crop on the s5ii annoys me quite a bit.
Your reviews have become so good. I have enjoyed your on camera personality for some time and have noticed a real progression in the quality of your content. Thanks very much and have a great 2023. I am a G9 MFT Nerd :) I'm very interested in seeing the next (PDAF?) iteration of the GH6 mainly because I have a good selection of MFT lenses, although I would very much enjoy a FF sensor camera for stills. I could buy the next MFT body if improvements warrant it BUT to invest in a FF system would be difficult for me to justify since there would be such a large additional lense investment. Something seems to be going on because I can currently purchase the new GH6 body for $2K CDN which is a substantial price reduction, even cheaper than buying from the U.S.. Makes me think GH6 ii is coming.
Thanks so much! ☺️ yes I think the lenses are the biggest consideration. You can get a lot of realllly nice lenses relatively cheaply on m43, and less so on full frame. I’m crossing fingers and toes for a new g9 🙏
The killer feature of the GH6 is the wide range of affordable lenses. I am hoping Pany will release two new m43 cameras in 2023, 1) G9 II for those who need a pro and don't mind a huge body, 2) GX9 II / GX10 for the rest of us 😁
Just wish the 10-25 was cheaper. Sony just announced a killer 20-70 f/4 which beats the 20-50mm f/3.5 Pana Leica equivalent in price/size/weight/range.
@@professionalpotato4764 The 10-25mm and 25-50mm f/1.7 are the major reasons why I'm still considering sticking with M43. If a G10 appears soon with equally great stills and video capabilities or at least enough video capabilities for documentary video as well as PDAF then that really tips the balance as I can't imagine a GH6II or GH7 coming sooner.
I really enjoy watching your videos. You're quite fun! I love my S5, GH5, GH4 and GX85. I'm saving my pennies for the S5IIX. Panasonic is doing such a nice job in creating tools for us creators.
I would prefer the S5ii if it was MFT, haha. I only carry the S5 when I really need low light or as a secondary camera. The absolute size of those lenses! On a side note... as you say "didn't take a tripod", there is a tripod head poking out of your backpack at 7:43 😅. I know that's back in the UK, but I found it funny regardless. Oh and regarding the punch-in: apparently the S5ii doesn't have (nor a replacement for) the AF-Point Scope. Sorry about waffling on!
The “5.7k, why would you even bother” line in regards to the GH6, are you insinuating that it’s a redundant recording type? Is there a benefit if using it? Like reframing? Pans in post with the extra wiggle room etc?
My GH6 surprised me this past weekend. This was the first time I took it out without the GH5M2, which tended to by my primary camera for general photos. Anyways, when I got home, I found that a number of photos I took with the flash unit attached came out dark, and that's when I discovered that Lumix cameras always go to base ISO when using flash. What really surprised me, though was in editing the photos, I brought up the exposure by 3 to 4 stops, and they were VERY CLEAN, without much noise at all. Granted, the blacks in the photos were outside the GH6's dynamic range and had a green tint, but that was easy enough to correct. Bottom line, I got GREAT photos even when underexposed by 4 stops. Oh, something that most folks tend to forget -- the CFexpress card will handle everything the SD card can and more, so you can easily do dual-recording of every format the SD card can support.
Pulling up the shadows in photography is always so eye opening for me on the Gh6! It has so much more dynamic range than you’d expect. Most people who say there’s no dynamic range in “smaller sensor” cameras have obviously never actually tried to edit a raw file from one!
@@MicroFourNerds They also say there's not enough detail or sharpness in M43 but I continue to be astounded at what I get from my lovely though ageing GX8 and even our first M43 camera the GH4 when processing their raw files in DxO PhotoLab Elite 6 using the DeepPRIME XD feature.
@@angelaERDE there’s so much detail on m43 images! That’s such a misconception isn’t it. In fact lenses have to be sharper and of a higher quality because the sensor is more unforgiving than full frame. It’s why you need focal reducers when adapting full frame lenses to m43 as it shows every flaw in full frame glass
Great video, hopefully have them both at some point. The photo at 7:41 is outstanding. Let me know if that pic is ever for sale... Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much! I’ve had a couple of requests for that photo for prints actually, it’s one of my faves!!! I will look into seeing if I can get some prints on my website ☺️
Awesome comparison Emily! The S5II is definitely a close to perfect UA-cam camera. The GH6 on the other hand is the superior film making tool, but not the perfect camera either 😅
Hi. Good comparison. I have a similar set (GH6 for over a year + S5IIX for 2 weeks) and I switched from GH5. Comparing the two cameras, I agree with almost everything you say in the video. From myself, I will only add that my work style and needs (90% video and 10% photos) mainly in a sensible light and if the gh6 had phase autofocus at the level of the s5IIx, I would have to think hard whether to buy FF at all (I film interiors - churches , temples and macro - insects, plants) and I get to max 3200 iso and gh6 gives me peace of mind. I am also satisfied with the photos (RAW because jpg are average straight from the camera) and how much you can get out of the shadow from the photos from this camera in graphics programs. Full frame has a few points of advantage (ISO, Dynamic Range, Phase Autofocus for video, better bokeh for the same F-number of the lens) but the GH6 is a filming beast. Panasonic probably built them that way on purpose - they complement each other in the hands of a conscious photo / video creator - where gh6 is weak (autofocus, greater ISO noise, smaller dynamic range) there full frame shines - where s5iiX can't do it (high video frames, macro, wild nature) is gh6 strong. Times like this - you have to have both.
Excellent video! I’m currently using a G7 for my livestreams. I’d love to have the S5 II, but that it is going to have to wait several months. Though, I’m intrigued if the S1H II will finally be the end all of cameras.
Hey Emily do you know there’ll be a MFT with phase AF? Coz I have GH5 and S5 I love them. But I’ll upgrade the S5II and now I want a new MFT with better AF coz I have the 10-25mm 1.7 and is so good but now I don’t use it coz I neeed to update my GH5.
Have you tried the Zcam e2 m4? It has better slow mo than the Gh6 and probably better low light. No stabe though 😥 it's a cinema camera. It's only 1500 though
I am interested in the S5ii because it is a true hybrid high-level camera. I will use it professionally for very normal video work (handheld) and mainly for indoor photography. I need a relatively small set-up for producing simple things but in good quality and in quick workflows (pre selected LUTs!). I guess I will only get by with 2-3 standard lenses. But for my personal photography I think m43 is so great because there are so many different lenses. You can cater for every genre, at least on a hobby fun level. I love having different camera setups with my G9 + zoom lenses and my old GX8 + primes. Even though the G9 is still a very good choice for its price (DPReview TV just mentioned it), it's time for a successor, definitely for the GX series.
At Sky Captain Media, we mainly shoot with our GH5s on or off gimbles. Recently purchased a BMPPC6k, but I'm seriously looking to sell our GH5s for the S6. What do you think ?
I was waiting for tthis video. I was really close to buy the GH6 as I'm a GH5 user but S5II made me think about it again and I think I lean more towards to S5II, The last couple of years I began taking more photos than before and I think S5II is slitly better for that. The only downward I can find is that crop on 4K60fps on the S5II but it is 10bit something I missed from my Gh5 that is 8bit, from the flip side I have to buy new lensses from the beginning. Maybe I have to wait for the GS6 (their baby) 😁 Nice video Emily, cheers.
What a great video :) you made a great UA-cam video about this. Very interesting. So many things to compare to this topic, the Codecs etc. GH6 can as far as I know much higher bitrates as the S5ii.
Excellent breakdown Emily. Going to be a stuck record though and chime with other commenters waiting on a G9 II 😅 the GH6 is too video focussed to suit me as a hybrid shooter who leans more heavily to photo, but I'm too invested in glass to make the switch to full frame - plus, love the size of M43 kit for travel and documentary photography! Saying that, were I camera-less and looking for my first system, I would be strongly considering the S5 II. The step up in autofocus takes Panasonic from a great offering with faults to a fantastic offering.
Thank you for this! I'm looking for some that will do video and photography well with room to grow into. I'm leaning towards the S5ii. I'm curious though how did you get the ISO so high on those gorgeous low light shots! 10,000?? 🤯
Both cameras are surprisingly good in low light! The s5ii in particular. You can basically let the ISO do whatever it wants and you’ll get a good image 😊
What lenses did you use on both cameras in this video? Did they have O.I.S.? S5 ii says that it has 5 stops on IBIS and 6.5 with a compatible OIS lense. I don't know what's the number on Gh6 though.
@@MicroFourNerds I am sure that you used equivalent primes, but did they have OIS to boost the ibis in handgeld situations? I am filming most of the times handheld with GH5 + sigma 18-35 and I want to do another deep step and I am looking for comparisons in that idea, that's why I am asking. Thx in advance!
Hi, I have a question, I'm planning to buy a camera, I don't know what to choose, lumix s5 ii or gh6 I need it for weddings, but the problem is that most of the shooting is outside in high temperatures, maybe 40 degrees, which of these models has better cooling your opinion thanks in advance
They both have fans, just different designs on the camera so I think either would be absolutely fine. I've had both baking away at outdoor weddings many times 😊
Thank you Emily, I’m on the fence, I already have all lenses for the gh6 but would love to get into full frame, so not sure which one to get. I have a GH5m2 and a G9
They’d both be really good! I would say the GH6 - there’s no crop with slower shutter speeds and the 4:3 ratio is coming back into popularity for music videos as well 😊 you’d likely not need auto focus on those shoots so really no benefit of the s5ii
My biggest gripe is how small the S5ii is. Like how is a full frame camea smaller than a micro 4/3 camea? Upgrading from a GH5 I wanted a more beefier feel knowing Im in full frame now. This almost made me get the S1H instead
i love your videos because of the structure you use when it comes to comparing!!! awesome!!! question....im really trying to find a very..suitable..reliable CF express card type B for my GH6. which BRAND and SPEED do you recommend and i just want a 128GB by the way. please and thank you :) this is for recording MOV and ProRes.
agree…gh6 stabilization very slightly better. As for AF the S5ii much faster, but for anything not having a lot of back and forth…studio work etc both work well (so does my g9). And if you use mostly MF for video then not an issue. Do enjoy fact you can do more in the way of editing in camera….the more work you can do there the better. Either camera likely too much for my needs, still learning so much with what I have! Well done video!
Hi, Nice comparison! I think it’s difficult to choose between the two based on the specs. It’s not all about the camera body, but about the lenses too. If you have the lenses for the GH6, what will bring you the S5II apart the AF performance? And vice versa, if you are packed with FF lenses, why go with the GH6 apart for the high frame rate? I already have the pair of Fujinon MK, the 10-25 & 25-50mm f.17, the 12-35 & 35-100mm, and the 50-200mm f2.8-4, and a Veydra 12mm. I’m quite happy at this moment. At this point, I was thinking of getting the S5IIX with the 18mm & the 35mm f1.8 to get the extra amount of light for dark situations. Even those lenses are not that great fully open. I think that is where the S5II should stand out compared to the GH6. So, in the end, the two could complement each other if you have the right lenses for them. When doing comparison, we should also select the best lenses for each of the cameras to emphasis their strengths otherwise, the comparison will be biased, IMO. Because what matters is the whole setup, not just one element.
Hey Emily would you recommend the S5ii to a person that is just getting into video/photography... I purchased the GH5 from eBay in mint condition(seller was a Sony guy who got the GH5 as a gift) with w 12-35 lens about 6 months ago just for taking photos and making short video projects of my new grandson also I just recently purchased Davinci Resolve 18 studio starting to learn how to use the software. But many of the photos as well as the video are out of focus and I have tried many different settings from different UA-camrs and just recently found one that he messaged me and got me to the point where the AF is point on... But if the S5ii is just that much better at AF as well as for photographs It might be a better camera to grow into before I invest in the 4/3 arena with new accessories and lenses and all. Unless there is a GH7 on the horizon with PDAF????? If I order the S5ii(12-60) lens)today I can get it Friday:). Okay end of my rant...
If you want something to use now, I wouldn’t hold out for a pdaf m43, as it’s only rumours at the moment. I am 90% sure they’ll come (why wouldn’t they if they have the tech now!) but no idea when. So maybe go for it!
@@MicroFourNerds I just ordered it thanks for your reply BTW I have watched I think all of your videos you have a great and very informative channel for noob’s like me!!!!
None of the results "shocked " me.. but It's very interesting to see really how good the GH-6 is...in the hands of a skilled user. There was a feeling of..."meh" from several reviewers on the 6 when it came out and even some question about it's capability as a stills shooter. I think we can say from deep divers like you that it really is a step up camera and hopefully a portent of things to come. Perhaps a new S1 type will have S5II performance+ with GH6 screen options. For me.. I would love to see the GH6 sensor,,,S5II processor and AF... Leica inspired rangefinder body all wrapped up in a new M4/3 platform (GX10??) for all my Pana-Leica glass to happily live out their days on.. Too much to ask??
The future is glass! Cameras come and go in our lust for the perfect camera. Having owned many Lumix m4/3 cameras and still own 5, I'm still waiting for that "perfect" Lumix to replace my G9 (come on Lumix, you can do this). Until that arrives, my money has been invested in great lenses (7.5mm f2, 12-35 f2.8, 35-100 f2.8, 100-400mm) that deliver fantastic images even from my antique Lumix G1! By the way, MPB is my go to dealer to buy and sell my Lumix cameras and lenses. Very fair pricing on my trades and great quality on my purchases!
I think that is so overlooked as well. I'd rather have a great lens on a mid-range camera body than the other way around! lenses and lighting are often forgotten in favour of the shiny new camera for sure!
I shot a feature film with the GH5, so I love Panasonic. Especially for its skin tones. As a filmmaker, I am looking for features that benefit me. I recently picked up the Sony FX30. But, the S5ii is really pulling me back to Panasonic. Not only for the price point, but, the fact that Panasonic has better skin tones. Whereas with Sony, I almost always have to tweak the skin tones in post. So, I am seriously looking at the S5ii. Panasonic FINALLY woke up and brought PDAF to their line of cameras. EDIT: PS. I get all of my used gear from MPB.
I have to agree with skintones! colour grading with the Panasonic cameras -- all of them, really -- has been such a breeze. I got some Sony footage when a second shooter helped me at a wedding a few months back and matching the colours was a NIGHTMARE. I didn't realise how blessed I was with the Lumix colours until then!
@@MicroFourNerdsthere are some great conversion luts nowadays that match footage between cameras. Never had an issue with my Sony cameras after discovering color matching.
S5II have a different sensor, S5 have better skintone, s5II have a red - magenta tint is much sharpen and is more noisier then all Panasonic S - line. The autofocus in real word is very bad, I do weddings and I use only manual focus. Is the worst Panasonic camera what I have. I gonna trade S5II for gh6 which for me is much better camera.
Both will do that - you’d get more options with the GH6. That camera has open gate (shoots in 4:3 so can be cropped vertically and horizontally) in 24p as well as 60p.
It was a very useful comparison. Personally, I shoot video with BGH1, it has half stop of DR more than GH5, most in manual focus. For autofocus on gimbal got A7IV. I hope m43 hybrid AF comes in GH7 would be easier to match colors and put it on gimbal.
Why do you want to hold onto the GH5 when you have a GH6?! I love the GH5, by the way. Have had one ever since it came out. Now that the S5-2 is here, I want the GH7!! (or I will settle for the GH6-2, with phase detection ;-) Wonderful video, by the way, good content and you are very nice to watch and listen to 😊
when shooting open gate on the GH6 (i assume its whats called anamorphic mode on my GH5) does the IBIS become less effective? .. As i am experiencing that on my GH5.
Without checking, it seems logical that the GH6 would have [ slightly ] better stability given its smaller sensor being easier to move and follow smoothly. [ which is why I'm *still* waiting for my G9-PD*!! ] *(Phase Detect) Are you listening, Panasonic?
Nice test however I think the comparison fell very short when you were doing the jelloo test (it was non existent)- I would have loved to have seen that done properly. You would be surprised by the winner, if you did a motion test, maybe if you filmed a quick pan shot or both cameras in a car filming from the side while the car is moving fast.
I have a G7 and cannot stand the extremely bad autofocus on it when doing my UA-cam videos. It ruins every video! Will the GH6 be a big enough improvement on this, or should i go for the S5 mkII? The only decent M43 lens i have is a cheap prime but it's amazing. Should I just forget about it and go full frame for best autofocus and better lenses? Are full frame lenses better? Is that why people are switching? I don't mind doing that if that's the case. Who cares about size if you're just gonna leave it on your desk or tripod to Vlog, right?
On a sidenote, I imagine it’s the same on a GH6, but on my GH5’s if you dig down into the menus you can adjust the sensitivity and speed of the autofocus. Also, GH6 does have dual native iso, it’s 400 and 2500.
Hi! To my knowledge, and what the Panasonic engineers told me at the event before the gh6 was released, it does not have dual native iso. I distinctly remember everyone moaning in the room during the presentation haha It does have dual output gain, which is different to having a dual native iso. There’s a good article about the differences here m.dpreview.com/articles/1570070253/what-is-dual-gain-and-how-does-it-work
Againts the Panasonic S5 II, I would definitly buy a the next versión of the Panasonic Gh6. A Panasonic Gh6 markii, with: - The newest Phase detection autofocus. - A Dual Native Iso 800 & 4000. - And With the DR Boost Mode at ISO 4000. - Phase detection Autofocus in 4k 120p and 240p. - Contrast Autofocus in 300p. - Real time lut. - Price $1500 (M43 spirit is bein Cheap, less than the Sony fx30) - New Panasonic Lumix Super Lenses with an F1.0 Aperture, under $800 USD. Like: 10mm f1.0 lens 17mm f1.0 lens 25mm f1.0 lens 42,5mm f1.0 lens 65mm f1.0 lens I would go back to the M43 systeme, after my Panasonic gh4. I sold it and bought a Bmcc 2.5k, witch is better in low light than the Gh4 ando for video. The biggest probleme with the M43 System is: The sensor is tiny, but there are no fast electronic lenses to compensate that, y el precio de las lentes m43 sigue siendo caro al final, and the price of m43 lenses is still expensive in the end, when you make a comparison with the same focal length and aperture with Aps-c lenses or Fullframe lenses for the same price. Like: M43 System The Lumix 10-25mm f1.7 ($1,797) The Lumix 25-50mm f1.7 ($1,797) With: f1.7 = f3.4 (lens equivalent calculator) When You Compare with the: Aps-C System Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 ($799) Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 ($979) With: f1.8 = f2.7 (lens equivalent calculator) The Aps-C are less expensive than m43 one at the end. Plus, the bigger sensor and more dynamic range. panasonic and olympus have to make up for that to make that system really attractive, or even lower the price of the cameras. Because already that price range that has the Panasonic gh6 and Olympus om1, is the territory of the enthusiast and pro level FullFrame cameras including the incomparable advantages of full frame over m43. The of the Panasonic Gh6 to be interresting shoud be no more than $1500 USD. To compite againts the Bmpcc4k, Z-Cam m4, Canon eos r7, Sony fx30, and too, that is the sensor or the meaning oh a M43 or Aps-C Camera: "Cheap and Value".
Just a suggestion to anyone buying a new camera they also look in to lens selection and pricing. Lens choices for the S5 II still lag behind the GH6, but they are improving.
I use a A7Riv for stills, so for me the GH6 is still more attractive, cheaper lenses, better slow motion, internal pro res. If the S5ii could match the GH6 for video, I would consider it though. 🤔 I guess it also depends on your personal needs, I’m in need of a small run and gun package. ProRes makes a world of difference, and I don’t want to run an external monitor if I have the choice.
I've been thinking for a long time for a gh6 but only for video, and it looks really sharp even better than FF. Autofocus a professional video maker uses it manual focus with piking. Gh6 top!!
Which do you prefer? Some bits and bobs didn’t fit into this video - it would have been an hour long haha but I should mention recording ProRes internally is a great tick in the GH6 column! Did I miss anything else? 📸
The one i got, but the S5II is the fullframe for me for sure
Since I use vintage primes exclusively, it's full frame for me. I like my 24 to be a 24, 50 a 50,.........
Thank you!
haha thanks so much!
Thanks Emily! At this point in time I’d choose the GH6 as I’m sticking with M4/3. But truthfully I’d choose neither as I’m holding out for a G9 upgrade. I’m more photo centric so the GH6 is too much video camera for my needs.
I think it’s too much for my needs to be fair 😂
Hello Marlene, its your fault that I bought a Panasonic G9 to go with my GH6. Well not all your fault alone. A friend of mine, who is a retired photojournalist, has a G9 and same lenses as me and we both walk round the same park photoing the same subjects. And hers are superior. Lets gloss over the fact that she did all this for a living and is far better at this than I am.
Agreed Marlene - holding out for the G9 II
Hi Frank. And I’ll take full responsibility for your ongoing success. 😉 Great to see you on Emily’s channel. She’s the best!
Eric, let’s hope we don’t have to wait too much longer!
Your summing up is so perfect. S5 II is a content/business powerhouse (as was the orginal!).
The GH6 is the most serious video creation tool you can buy under $30k. I've been a cinema shooter for 30 years; it still manages to blow me away 5 months in.
Hi, how do you feel about the ‘jello’ effect? For filmmaking this seems like a huge red flag…
@@odyssey.studios on which camera? I've had zero issues.
How is the streaking issue on the GH6? Is it a problem for you?
Good comprehensive summary and comparison Emily!
Aaah amazing! Ya know, it was the G7 that made me fall in love with m43 to begin with. I couldn’t believe what it could do for the price! Haha
@@MicroFourNerds ah no way! yes couldnt believe the price! 230 for one 2nd hand, amazing.
Try and get the G80 if you can. Would say you could pick one up for around 400 or less. I started with the G7 moved on to the G80 now use the GH5.
Been keeping an eye on both cameras and they're competitively priced which always makes me look up comparison vids lmao!
Nice review. Thank you! 👍 There might be a small mistake on the crop info 8:00. From the specs sheet 4k 30 fps should also be available in fullframe mode. Which is probably quite important for many users.
Aah yes, I meant anything above 30 frames. I just said it like an idiot 🙈 thanks for letting me know! ☺️
Overall having both of these on deck is 🔥
a mixture from the best of both cameras packed into a new G9 mark II and I'm all in!
Yes please!!!
@@MicroFourNerds What can they do to improve on the G9? It broke my heart to see it selling for 1/2 price. Good for new buyers though. Also love the GX85 (marked down to 80 outside of North America). Wish Panasonic put in an audio Jack.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
great job of covering so many pertinent aspects of use and performance, thanks 👍
Nice video, thanks ! What would be your choice of lenses for S5 ? What lens did you use in the first autofocus example ? The background on the S5 looked so creamy :)
The Lumix 50mm f1.8 on the s5ii and the lumix leica 25mm 1.4 (but I set it at 1.8 to match) on the GH6 😊
That whole set of Lumix 1.8 primes is brilliant on the s5ii!
I've been eating up content about the S5ii since it came out. For the few extra features, I'm holding off until the S5iix comes out. Loved your side-by-side comparison. Thanks!
I think for the extra £300 or so, it’s well worth the upgrade if you want those high end video features. (Plus it looks so bloody cool haha)
@@MicroFourNerds It is a great looking camera. I might have to use the "batman voice" when I get one. lol
Think I'm gonna do the same.
That sounds brilliant tbh!
So far, the sigma is lovely on the s5ii but
SO SO SO much bigger and heavier. I’m leaning towards the 100-400 on gh6 for super zoom needs as you get more reach and it’s much more compact. But the s5ii will be better in low light due to the great iso performance of that camera
@@MicroFourNerds That's great to hear and thank you for the ultra-fast reply. 🙏
Thinking about this combo:
GH6 + Leica 100-400
S5 II + 24-70mm F2.8 + 50mm F1.4 + Sigma 20mm F1.4
Weight = around 5 Kilogram
Or
S5 II + 24-70mm F2.8 + 50mm F1.4 + Sigma 20mm F1.4
S5 II + Sigma 60-600mm
Weight = around 6.450 Kilogram
Size and weight are PRO GH6 + S5 II Combo
But different chargers, filters etc and not only 1 system
So I am asking you (any myself ^^) if the better low light of the S5II is worth the size, weight and also money.
And what about IBIS? Is it better / more stable when GH6 + 100-400 is used or when S5 II with Sigma 60-600mm is used?
S5 II and Sigma comes also with better AF I think.
A really hard decision!
@@Lifetogo good news, they take the same batteries so only one charger 😁
I honestly struggled to take anything handheld with the 60-600 sigma, you’d definitely need a monopod for support, which isn’t the end of the world.
@@Lifetogo amazing! I’m so excited for that trip!
@@MicroFourNerds thanks Emily
I am hoping Pany will release two new m43 cameras in 2023, 1) G9 II for those who need a pro and don't mind a huge body, 2) GX9 II / GX10 for the rest of us 😁
Agree! GX10 would be GREAT!!!
Yes GX10 !
Haha yes I know what you mean, I like walking round with the tiniest cameras possible!

Thank you! I do try, for the first few days at least! 😁
Already picked up the s5 mark 2 yesterday. Soooo excited…
Great comparison - I can see why it took so long to make 🤣😂 you didn’t leave any stone unturned !
I forgot about ProRes. Bloody hell 😂
Awesome comparison Emily! The S5II is definitely a close to perfect UA-cam camera. The GH6 on the other hand is the superior film making tool, but not the perfect camera either 😅
That’s a very good summary! Haha
One of the best and so nice review 😊😊😊😊 great job.
Love the nighttime sample shots!
Nice video Emily. Really interesting. I like your hoodie!
Excellent video! I’m currently using a G7 for my livestreams. I’d love to have the S5 II, but that it is going to have to wait several months. Though, I’m intrigued if the S1H II will finally be the end all of cameras.
Is it just me or who would be up for a G80 MK2? So basically a G(X)80 with the 20 MP sensor, 4k60 and PFAD :-)
Congrats to your collab with mpb ;-)
I can't wait for the GH7 if it will include the new focus and maintain awesome image stabelization.
Dude, that won’t happen for at least 2 or 3 years
@@GoTravelPlanet I have a Sony A7IV with 3 Gmaster zoom lenses. I can wait.
thanks so much for this lovely comparison.
At Sky Captain Media, we mainly shoot with our GH5s on or off gimbles. Recently purchased a BMPPC6k, but I'm seriously looking to sell our GH5s for the S6. What do you think ?
Came to the video with high hopes to finally decide which camera will be my next one but after watching this video.. now I want both 😢😢😢
I was waiting for tthis video.
Can Panasonic also bring REAL TIME LUT in GH6 in an update? It is annoying how they are concentrating on only G9ii and S5ii
It was a little while ago but I’m quite sure I used equivalent primes to take that out of the equation 😊
Hi, I bought s5 but struggling how to zoom with app
Hi, I have a question, I'm planning to buy a camera, I don't know what to choose, lumix s5 ii or gh6 I need it for weddings, but the problem is that most of the shooting is outside in high temperatures, maybe 40 degrees, which of these models has better cooling your opinion thanks in advance

They both have fans, just different designs on the camera so I think either would be absolutely fine. I've had both baking away at outdoor weddings many times 😊
That was marvellous, thanks for sharing.
Ha! Yes, I love my GH5 as well. Lots of good info here. Appreciated!
Thank you Emily, I’m on the fence, I already have all lenses for the gh6 but would love to get into full frame, so not sure which one to get. I have a GH5m2 and a G9
Which one would be the best for shooting music promo videos and music videos ? I’m pretty new to all this.
They’d both be really good! I would say the GH6 - there’s no crop with slower shutter speeds and the 4:3 ratio is coming back into popularity for music videos as well 😊 you’d likely not need auto focus on those shoots so really no benefit of the s5ii
@@MicroFourNerds Thank you!
An AF comparison with S5.2 and OM1 would be useful to compare PDAF focus.
@@MicroFourNerds You are a devil women! Your sorcery seduced me into the quest for the glass $$ grail!🤣😉 Thank goodness for MPB👍😊
@@MicroFourNerds Here’s a really good video for matching cameras:
ua-cam.com/video/4ZWmtZnsQP4/v-deo.html
@@MicroFourNerdsthere are some great conversion luts nowadays that match footage between cameras. Never had an issue with my Sony cameras after discovering color matching.
S5II have a different sensor, S5 have better skintone, s5II have a red - magenta tint is much sharpen and is more noisier then all Panasonic S - line. The autofocus in real word is very bad, I do weddings and I use only manual focus. Is the worst Panasonic camera what I have. I gonna trade S5II for gh6 which for me is much better camera.
Great review : Full of useful info and insights! Thank you! ( BTW isn't it time we told the Americans that it's called Jelly !? ;-) )
Hahaha yes. Yes it is!
Waiting for the GH6II with PDAF to be released. Any time now.......
I'm happy with my choice with the GH5m2. The GH5m2 is the best of the GH6 (fast uncropped 4K60) and S5IIX (live streaming and dual sd-cards)
Great video! Thank you! 🙏🏼
omg a Manchester UA-camr.... wow!!! and YEAH!!
Which one should I get if doing travel videos on UA-cam but also want to crop footage in 9:16 for social media without losing quality of video?
Both will do that - you’d get more options with the GH6. That camera has open gate (shoots in 4:3 so can be cropped vertically and horizontally) in 24p as well as 60p.
I bought the GH6 in 2022 and will be using it for years.
That’s the way! The GH6 is so good
Great video thank you !
Quick question for gh6 stabilization. What works best for walking shots/gimbal style shots - e-stabilization on or off?
I keep it off. It makes it a bit to jello for my liking and also punches in slightly
It was a very useful comparison. Personally, I shoot video with BGH1, it has half stop of DR more than GH5, most in manual focus. For autofocus on gimbal got A7IV. I hope m43 hybrid AF comes in GH7 would be easier to match colors and put it on gimbal.
Thank you! ❤
Thank you so much for this info. I believe I have made my decision…
The s5ii has an anamorphic specific stabilisation, and I am pretty sure the Gh6 does too now. This stops any jello and weird warping at the edges 😊
Did you adjust settings on GH6 to be quicker focus or use defaults?
Just defaults, I don’t tend to mess with those settings on any of my cameras, just whatever it is out of the box
yo tengo la gh6 y no se tarda en enfocar asi como tu lo muestras
Some love for this channel! 👌
Also...I always wondered: Wouldn't it be cool if the cam had a bluetooth interface which would allow to connect ANY bluetooth mic to the camera?
Thanks for the comparison
Without checking, it seems logical that the GH6 would have [ slightly ] better stability given its smaller sensor being easier to move and follow smoothly.
[ which is why I'm *still* waiting for my G9-PD*!! ]
*(Phase Detect)
Are you listening, Panasonic?
I shall be right behind you on the queue to buy one haha 🙏🤞
Love the Seahawks hat 👍
We’re going to the Bowl next year mark my words 😆🙏
GH6 AF is quite unusable in most scenarios. If you want to stay in the MFT microsystem then get the G9ii otherwise the S5ii is a beast of a camera!
I'm keeping my S1 for now, the S5II has some flaws with the regular profiles and I don't use VLOG.
I distinctly remember everyone moaning in the room during the presentation haha
It does have dual output gain, which is different to having a dual native iso. There’s a good article about the differences here
m.dpreview.com/articles/1570070253/what-is-dual-gain-and-how-does-it-work
Againts the Panasonic S5 II, I would definitly buy a the next versión of the Panasonic Gh6. A Panasonic Gh6 markii, with:
- The newest Phase detection autofocus.
- A Dual Native Iso 800 & 4000.
- And With the DR Boost Mode at ISO 4000.
- Phase detection Autofocus in 4k 120p and 240p.
- Contrast Autofocus in 300p.
- Real time lut.
- Price $1500 (M43 spirit is bein Cheap, less than the Sony fx30)
- New Panasonic Lumix Super Lenses with an F1.0 Aperture, under $800 USD.
Like:
10mm f1.0 lens
17mm f1.0 lens
25mm f1.0 lens
42,5mm f1.0 lens
65mm f1.0 lens
I would go back to the M43 systeme, after my Panasonic gh4.
Like:
M43 System
The Lumix 10-25mm f1.7 ($1,797)
The Lumix 25-50mm f1.7 ($1,797)
With: f1.7 = f3.4 (lens equivalent calculator)
When You Compare with the:
Aps-C System
Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 ($799)
Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 ($979)
With: f1.8 = f2.7 (lens equivalent calculator)
The Aps-C are less expensive than m43 one at the end.
What are your AF settings for S5 just the speed and responsiveness.
Just default settings haven’t changed anything since getting it in those menus
GH series stabilzation is legendary. S5ii stabilzation is in another world considering Full Frame
Gh6 top!!
