I'm delighted by its availability. Now getting the original S1 and S5 for 900 USD and lower. And THAT is the truly sweet sweet deal... Compared to the S5II X, my S1 ('upgraded' from GH5 to S1 a couple of years back) offers a CFExpress Type B internally, and the same external RAW options. Probably going to get a used S5 (or even a GH6), and wait for a couple of years before taking the plunge for the S5 II X. It's the best Lumix camera out there, but I'll wait till they bring in either internal RAW or 4K 120 FPS without crop (also a CFExpress Type B slot for recording most of the modes internally)
I so much like how you stick to the facts and give reasons WHY you prefer one setting over another. Too many reviewers spend too much time talking about what they prefer, without explaining why. I may need something they don't like because I may have different applications than they do. Thank you.
Thank you for this review. I've been waiting to upgrade into a full frame sensor camera for a while. I started on the G7 then went to the GH6. I've been waiting for the S5iiX to come out and eventually the S1Hii. I love your insight and personal take aways. You cover the things you need to but always include your personal perspective. Keep up the good work.
whoa that phone reveal was 🔥!!! Your footage is amazing! i have to agree fully about the gh6 talk - there's still something about that cam that i can't let go of. the usability of it and shooting with it is so easy. great vid!!
The G9 is a beast of a Stills camera in low light. 😀 If and when Panasonic update the G9 and GH6 with new features then other manufactures better look out.
Totally agree with this stance, I absolutely love the shooting experience on my GH6 logistically and I use slow motion/switch frame rates constantly. The apsc crop would be a huge hinderance. I also think some of the featured recording modes in all these cameras like prores are FOR MOST PEOPLE just a gimmick. At least, I'm definitely not shooting a 14 hour day in prores 😅 but it is useful to have "just in case"
I love the massive capabilities of my GH-6 and I am a mostly MFT cine style prime lens shooter so autofocus is accomplished by DJI Lidar attachments in the rare cases I am not fully manual. I have a pretty extensive kit of MFT adapted glass of the vintage variety coupled with MFT anamorphic glass so I am not wanting to go back into heavier full frame lenses. So for me the next ideal camera would be a GH-6X with the new autofocus and I'll be ready for the next five to seven years as a happy camper. I went from gh-4 to GH-6 because that workhorse GH-4 just kept getting the jobs done so I never upgraded to a GH-5.
If I ever was to move camp from MFT to Full-Frame then the "X" would be the only camera for me. My mate's S5ii is phenomenal and as pin-sharp as you can get, however I still prefer my GH6 simply because, of what you say, 4K 120fps 10 bit internal. If there was ever a "mic drop" moment that would be it. I don't know if you have tried DaVinci Resolve yet, however its Noise Reduction is simply amazeballs for lowlight/indoor with GH6 footage. Its even better when S5ii footage put thorough the Noise Reduction washer. Last month I made a fatal error filming the Flying Scotsman at East Lancashire Railway, and recording direct to my Atomos Ninja, rather than the internal CF Express card. With the GH6 you can use a "Monitoring LUT". The GH6 knows the difference and adjusts the Waveform to compensate for what you are looking at. The Atomos, does not compensate for a "Monitoring LUT". I had not worked this out and the entire day's footage was under exposed. No amount of digital witchcraft was going to save me. Having an external monitor can bring benefits of recording to external cards, but to the unwary it can present you with problems.
Another well produced, shot, written, edited and audioed episode. I have a GH5 and am considering also purchasing a GH6 for the 4K 120p slomo feature alone as I shoot mostly birds and insects as a hobby. Cheers from an American living in Sweden.
Just wanted to say that I think you do a really great job at your reviews and all of your videos for that matter. Enjoyable, entertaining, and informative. You do a great job. Appreciate all The work you put into your videos.
Amazing review and comparison. You are such a PRO! Just a thought I had while watching your video ... The solution to crop in 4k 60p on x is to switch APS-C crop full time. Then there is no change in focal length when changing the settings.
What a great, comprehensive video. Thanks for this. Interesting points of view all around. I'm still using the S5 (original one), and I still love it, but have been thinking really hard about the GH6, and now "the x", simply because I want to be able to record direct to an SSD drive. That's really appealing to me and would really help my workflow. So much cheaper than the billions of SD cards that we all own. ;) I have full frame lenses, so it probably makes more sense for me to stay in that world, but that GH6 has always been calling me. We'll see....... thanks for the great work, always.
I bought a couple GH6’s to pair with my S5’s and I absolutely love them. They’re my main cameras for weddings now with the S5’s relegated to tripod duty. The GH6 is next-level compared to the S5 and S5II, and with all the rebates happening they are way cheaper!
A really great comparison! It`s wonderful to hear how some features work with & not so with different work flows! Definitely one of the most valuable reviews we have seen ♥️♥️
I watch you cause you have a useful way of explaining the on-the-job nitty gritty. (better than the others 😊) Like you, I am a pragmatic videographer so I just whack the Lumix on the tripod and I’m ready for action I strap a monitor on the tripod leg (and it’s still minimal), It’s satisfying way for framing and M. focus I don’t need Full frame just for the shallower DOF, I get better result with longer lenses on Gh5 / 6 Olympus 25/1.2 + 42 /1.2 + Oly 75mm is much more (3D) than relying on Full frame ! I also don't need the low light benefit of Full frame because Sydney has plenty sun All full frame cameras struggle Electrnically > transfer rates / frame rate / heat That's why the S5 2 and the X are different / thanks to the internal Fan I do add a small side/back lights onto subject to separate more. GH7 (Nov. 2023) is it! due to Phase AF/ the electronics & SSD Thanks.
This is an excelllent comparison. Until you know the pain of a mandatory additional crop has heavy as 1.5x, having a camera that doesn't do that is a massive help.
I’m unfortunately cash limited, but I’m not using it for an income, so a used OG S5 with a Sigma 45mm f2.8 for $1000 was pretty much as far as I could stretch. Upside is I got it from a local person who used it strictly in a static studio environment to an external recorder, so it was pristine with a close to zero shutter count (as it never left its cage mount and was never used for stills or in-camera recording). Looking forward to doing astrophotography with it as soon as I can save up for a good open wide angle lens.
I was quite a reluctant adopter of the CFExpress card at first but ya know what I love it now! If it means I can bypass having to use an SSD I’m really happy!
Great review and insight, for me it's glass cost. Already bought into the Micro 4/3s eco-system after a move from Canon many moons ago at massive cost I swore I'd never change systems again I'm just hoping a GH6 mk2 comes out with the new auto focus system included.
Ja the lense cost.. but i noticed the lenses that make m43 really good are very expensive too. The olympus pro lenses are not cheap and the leica 10-25 , 25-50 1.7 are 2000 each. Even the leica 100-400 is more expensive than some full frame lenses within this range. There are many cheap m43 lenses but in my opinion they are not worth buing if you want the best quality.
@@andersistbesser On point, & on top of it, by comparison, the FF equivalents (or close enough), such as the Sigma 24*70 & 28*70 F/2.8 (Art & Comtemporary) lenses will gather + light proportionnally, compatible with the S5 line (L mOUnt aLLiiiiiiaaaanCe !), with better optical quality, at lower cost, while not necessarily being heavier (the Contemporary being only 470g for instance). I think the FF parc lacks some cheap options such as pancake lenses equivalents for expl, but some of the existing products are quite great in perf & affordable, while, as said, the quali options in the 4/3 ecosystem actually get costly real fast (not + than FF, but disproportionate compared to the usual $$ gap between these ecosystems). What striked me on that was the comparison Gerald Undone made between & of these Leica F/1.7 zooms, & a SpeedBoosted APSC Sigma, which provided better perfs in some aspects. That gave me the hint the best deals in 4/3's perspective, could be SpeedBoosting some awesome lenses of other sensor scales, that could be cheaper & better than 4/3 glass. But it requires even + research, on actual compatibility/reliability, AF perf, vignetting, used market opportunities (some much easier & cheaper found than others...), etc.
I wonder if Panasonic will show the Lumix G users some love next time or they will continue on the glorious FF path and launch the S1 mk II next. In any case it seems like the calendar is full until autumn...
Now that Panasonic has auto focus that works they just need to add a manual switch for photo and video settings like the Sony A7IV. I want to switch back to Panasonic for the great color science but need that "change on the fly" capability. I started following you when my kit was Gh5s which I loved. Keep up the great work. I look forward joining you in Panasonic world again some day.
Sorry, I’m not sure either camera meets what mft is really about; small and light. One advantage to the GH6 is small lenses, but the camera is really big and honestly if I was going to start a channel using a FF I would suggest the Sony A7IV (or maybe the upcoming A7C2). At least it’s smaller and lighter than either of these two (closer to the grass roots of mft in that sense) and you have access to an amazing selection of lenses. Of course; you are back to largely big lenses, but that seems to be what you want. Nothing wrong with that and probably needed for professional work. It is like saying you like have a small car channel, have a few, but instead share drives using a Ford f150. Always enjoy your videos, they offer some interesting content and are often fun, but this iseems more about not staying with your theme. Nothing wrong with that, this one was so,well done but now just like so many other folks who left the mft circle. Just not what I hoped to see; one about cameras that are mft, small, light and fun to use! In fairness, that’s just what drew me to the channel. Maybe not others.
Thanks for your comment! I appreciate you taking the time. I’m definitely not leaving mft and definitely not moving on from small cameras 😊 if they ever bring out a mft camera with pdaf (come onnnn lumix!!) that would be my choice to film myself. I think there are two reasons why I adore mft. Like you say, it’s the small and capable side 90% of the time. The other 10% is just how astounding these cameras are for high end video work. I love that they can do both - it’s so cool! I appreciate that that side of mft isn’t for everyone, but it’s definitely worth talking about as it’s a huge benefit of the system over all 😊 (Tho I totally agree the gh6 is chonky! Hopefully if and when there’s an update it can be smaller 🙏)
@@gordon3988 I think for video lumix will always have the edge, but I’m loving testing more Olympus cameras in the Tiny Camera series 😊 got the Pen F for two weeks at the moment!
As far as the SSD goes, the way I see it, is if I am putting a cage on it, to protect it already, a cable clap and mount are a no brainer, compared to very expensive C-Fast media. For people who can write off such media for business purposes, those types of media are a no brainer. The SSD is for people like me, who don't do this for a living and can get a USB SSD 4tb for $250 vs $1799 Anglebird C-Fast type B of the same size (almost the same cost as the camera itself lol). Having said this, I do wish the camera came with a C-Fast slot for when prices come down, but I can live without it.
The Canon EOS R6 Mk II actually has no crop, but that's the only camera body in that price bracket that has that and it still doesn't get anywhere near the Panasonic line-up when it comes to the video assist tools and does not have things like DCI etc. I'm looking forward to getting my S5 II X.
5:32 - BUT, and there is a big BUT. SSD's cost way less than SD cards and can be much larger. So we could argue that we could buy an SSD per project or at least have enough spares to keep a good number of projects "in-flight" before we format and reuse the SSD for a new project. This would be very handy to keep the footage secure until the edit is at a mature revision level.
Thanks for the review and thoughts on the "X"! I've been waiting for the reviews to start rolling in, since I've had my pre-order in for a few months. I'm super excited to get it, but you do bring up several good points on the rigging. I've recently been getting into the M43 system and have several lenses now. Maybe I'll have to invest in a GH6 body down the road to have the best of both worlds, especially if the prices come down even more. I am very curious to see what Panasonic will be releasing in the M43 lineup over the next year or so.
Think you nailed it on the head. The benefits that you get from the smaller sensor on M4/3 will mean it will always be a step up when compared to FF cameras in the same price range. So personally i think a perfect set up using sub $4000 cameras would be S5iix as a main A-cam for most recording due to the dynamic range and noise performance. A GH6ii or which ever m4/3 camera they bring out with PDAF as b cam, gimbal cam, etc for those slower frame rates. Then either a s5, S5ii or perhaps a S1R (S1Rii someday) for high res photography when needed and as a 3rd camera for multicam set ups like a wedding ceremony That covers most needed uses cases and each camera fills a different need but all within the same brand
Thanks very much for this video. I say this as a guy from Yorkshire, but living in Vietnam, facing the very first-world quandary / dilemma / maze of whether to get a s5iiX or a GH6. Already have MFT glass and an old but very loved GH4; but obvs lured by FF, and the fact that you can adapt EF lenses (which are fantastically cheap in Vietnam) to the X and get autofocus etc. This seems like an unbeatable proposition for documentary work; however I've been wedded to and a strong advocate for MFT for many years, so it feels a bit like a betrayal. I want to shoot films in the jungle, so low light might be an issue, but then dual-gain sensor and all that, It's tough to decide, and I simply can't read or watch any more reviews. Your vid has swung me ever so slightly towards GH6, having spent the last two days in what I thought was a final decision to get the X. Yes, an external SSD is fantastically great but also, yes, a faff. CF cards are expensive though - even here - and I can't just stick 'em in my Mac; FF lenses are heavy. Etc. Any way, loved the vid and your general attitude towards and opinions about it all.
The GH6 and the BM 6k Pro are very annoying cameras; because every time you try to replace them, they demonstrate their absolute usefulness. :-) The X is great, but I've also tried MUCH more expensive cameras and still, when push came to shove, out come the GH6 or BM. Terrible problem to have! /great video as always.
Hi Emily - thank you for such an informative video! I have been a photographer since the film days but this ol' bird has never dabbled in video beyond a clip here or there. What camera would you recommend for travel videos where I want to sell the footage to clients for their instagram posts as well as creating footage for my personal travel collection?
I agree, I’m a little annoyed that we can’t get everything that made the GH5 in a full frame, even after the second generation… it’s part of why I’m still shooting the GH5, it does so much, without much fuff :)
@@erbartlett i dont understand the obsession with small cameras. I have a gh5 and i use it with the battery grip only. It feels much better in the hand if it is more heavy and handheld shots are much more stable. I once had a s1 in my hands and it felt perfect. I would use the s1 with the battery grip also. To me bigger is better. Tried sony a 7 , its small but i dont even have enogh room for my fingers between lense and fingera because the lense is so close my fingers rub on it. I cant work if the camera has so bad ergonomics
@@andersistbesser it all has to fit I a single bag I take with me kitesurfing…moving to full frame increases the lense size so much already I can’t also move up in body size too
I had the same feelings about the S5 4k60 crop, so whenever it's going to be an issue I shoot in the 4k anamorphic mode all day but without an anamorphic lens.
You just get a 4:3 APSC crop. It records a boxy 4:3 image, it plays back in 4:3, the stabilisation works as normal unless you switch anamorphic stabilisation on. On the old S5 it's about as close as you can get to open gate. I think a lot of people overlooked it because it's called anamorphic 4:3. It's just 4:3.
How does the 4k 120 on the GH6 compare to Sony A7SIII/ FX3? I have never seen any camera come even close to the A7SIII in 4k 120 even though its an old camera now. I really wish the S5II had 4k 120 and that apsc crop on the 4k 60 is a bummer for me! There are cameras cheaper than this like the canon R8 that has no apsc crop!
I just don't think it makes sense for video to get the S5 II or x (I have not tried it myself..). I would stick to the GH6 and buy a GH5s for low light.
After testing so many cameras the last 15 yeears, one advice I can give is rent the cameras before! And pick the one that simply inspire you to shoot ☺️
Hi, great video. I have hopefully not a silly question about your show motion filming. When filming in 120p in 4k, did your footage film in slow motion in camera, or do you still have to load your footage into an editing suite and make it slow there? 😊
HI I still remember that video, when the gh6 came out in which you made a comparison with the s5 mark 1, and it almost seemed that the management of low light noise, in some situations, was better on the gh6. Now I have a s5 ii and I must say that compared to the gh6 that I had noticed an improvement in noise management which could actually be 2 clear stops. It seems to me that sometimes even movies at 25,600 ISO can be used if you don't have too many pretensions. I don't know if the s5 mark 1 had worse performance in handling noise. As for the photos, I think the gh6 offers better images overall. Trying the lumix s 20-60 and the 50 f1.8 the detail didn't make me crazy. And when will you borrow the leica sl 100-400 to use with s5ii for a nice review? :) What do you think about the photos? by the way when will they announce a new micro 4/3 :P
In the talking head bit? That’s probably my colour grading - I was in a very shady green area and definitely over did it. Basically, if the colours look good, that’s Lumix’s fault. If they look bad, it’s my user error 😂
I am so conflicted... My g80 is having issues so I need a new body. I cannot decide if I should get the g9 or the s5. They obviously compliment eachother and having both would be the way to go... that just isn't possible for me
I own a gh5 and want a new canera. Its very hard choice between gh6 and s5 because both have big advantages. It seems that i want both to have everything covered.
To be honest, I don't use the SSD myself. I would much rather attach a USB power-pack to the camera, via the USB port, and not have to worry about batteries dying on me if I am out all day. I've got two SSD's for my Ninja, so I don't even have to worry about how much stuff I capture on the day either. I have 1Tb and 0.5Tb cards for the Ninja. I shudder to think how much it would cost in SD cards to make up 1.5Tb of storage.
@@frankinblackpool Recording on the Ninja is indeed also what I often do. Mostly as backup though, so I still have to spend the money on SDs and CFEXPRESS 😅
@@anotherintrospekt6596 That’s an option, but you’ll lose power redundancy. For me, that’s a concern when I’m hand holding the camera. On a tripod it’s absolutely fine though.
Please excuse my basic question, as I am not an experienced videographer. Couldn’t you just use the 1.4x teleconverter for all your slower frame rates then when you switched to your higher frame rates (1.5x crop) the difference in the field of view would be minimal? Of course this would mean keeping a wider lens on the camera for the whole shoot as if it were apsc camera. Eg. a 35mm prime would be like a 49mm(1.4x)/52.5mm(1.5x).
Yes that’s an option - I could just make the camera 100% apsc mode then it would change. I just think it’s a waste losing the full potential of the sensor, even if I can only use it for some shots 😊
Canon R8 does not have apsc crop 4k60. So Panasonic should unlock that option even with overheating, because I believe that 10 or 15 minutes 4k60 ff would be enough for many people for b-roll.
R8 trades to the no-crop for no IBIS, and lenses that you have have to remortgage your house to afford. But that option for the S5 II/X would be a cool one, and maybe one that they'll unlock with firmware down the line (preferably before an S1H2 comes along).
I'm so happy I didn't go the SSD route with the GH6- everything internal on CFExpress. Also, the S5ii X seemed very noisy in its crop modes, unlike the GH6. I didn't expect that. Great video.
You raise some very interesting considerations regarding the flippy screen and the SSD. Please keep the content coming! Do you happen to know how much the S5ii firmware update will cost? Might make the X a better value proposition....
@@MicroFourNerds which puts it right at the same price as the X. IMHO everyone should go for the X unless they are certain they won't want RAW Output in the future. Plus, I have a sneaky feeling they may update the X earlier, or with better features in the future.
Emily, have you heard of the YT channel, Gerald Undone? He just put out (within the last 6[?] hours or so) a video on a very deep dive on this camera's subtleties. I think he mentions just about EVERY function and cross-related limitations, plus some negatives he believes can (will?) be fixed with future FW upgrades.Might find some useful (for you) info there.
This is a very hard decision. The simplicity of the GH6 does make it more attractive. How is the comparative quality of the footage? What lenses do you prefer with it
Honestly my work dosent need what X offers.. so I would go with the original S5ii .. right now still happy with my a7iii and I had to sell my beloved gh5.. 😢 But if anything goes well I will buy s5ii for video and keep a7iii for photos.. good mix for weddings
Hello do you can upload some raw footage from the S5m2x? I really need to be sure if is good im lowlight and to be sure if is much better than the gh6, UA-cam ever delet3 de noise from the video, so i think make a color grade and see the real results inti my tv
I tend to keep it on in every setting I can (which is basically anything except the 4k 120p) it really does a good job, but I don’t think it can compete with proper dual native iso on the s series of cameras
I don’t think so. I think it was always the intention for those modes to have contrast based. I don’t mind personally the only one I use is the 120p HD
Holy wobbles in the beginning! That was jarring. I can tell that was the X with a wide angle lens for sure. That was more severe than Canon wobbles dare I say.
@@MicroFourNerds True, I have the S5ii and love it. So im not a hater of it. Luckily I usually use the Sigma 105mm F1.4 beast, so the stablization is absolutely glorious for that purpose.
@@MicroFourNerds food for thought though, if the crop is messing with workflow, why not just put the camera in APSC? that way the crop is always there and you still have a bigger sensor size than the gh6… AND you still hand dual native ISO
well everything you said in the conclusion is basically why the GH6 is till my favorite camera I own and ever had (I own other systems and have used bigger high end sensor cameras) I used the S5II and what killed me is the APSC crop, its a fantastic camera but not professional enough compared to my GH6, the FF is irrelevant to me in 99% of the situations, so the GH6 being a underrated "crop sensor" is not a problem for me, so I didn't buy the S5II or X, the crop is a huge problem for me specially when you have the Canon R8 which is $1500 and doesn't have a crop in 4k 10bit 60fps, I know it lacks many features from lumix cameras but still, it has great autofocus, colors and no crop in FF, the lack of CFExpress cards for higher bitrates and codecs is a huge problem for me, so its not worth in my opinion (in my scenario) so between the X and GH6, I'd go GH6 without a doubt.
Micro four nerds - I’d use it as my talking head camera, not to talk about in the videos. I have been using the s5ii since December actually for the same reason. Pdaf is just so much easier to make sure you’re in focus!
@@MicroFourNerds Oooh, I misunderstood you then I guess. Sorry about that. I suppose the one thing that would solve this conundrum is a GH6 with PDAF then, eh?
so why not an ssd for each project? all you have to do is get multiple ssd ( how many projects can that be ... 4 5?) and just remember what project is on which ssd ? :D :D
I’m going to buy the original S5 for APSC Anamorphic shooting with 10ms rolling shutter and full frame photography. It seems slow motion in full frame is no existent on this camera so I’m not considering it. I’ll just shoot in HD like I did one the GH5.
If it can't be done without accessories, I don't want it. The X seems like an excellent fully-rigged camera for professionals, but my S5, 20-60 and a couple of manual f1.4 lenses fit in a small shoulder bag.
I just wish the s5iix had twin cfexpress cards so all the available formats could be recorded internally. So much easier than having to rig with external ssd or ninja V. And that crop on almost everything is rediculous, why no stacked sensor with full frame readout in 60p, Come on Panasonic it's 2023!!!
One more thing to charge, bring, more cables. And much larger files with prores. I just prefer a more minimal setup personally! But I can totally see the benefits
@@MicroFourNerds well, you mentioned adding an external monitor while using ssd, in that case external monitor is a much more efficient solution. For really minimal set up just camera is better, but than using your phone is even better if you go down that rabbit hole 😁
What do you make of this sexy new camera from Lumix??
absolutely love it
Not enoug money, but great
I love what it is, and I love lumix for making it, even if it's not for me
I'm delighted by its availability.
Great review and perspective!!

If and when Panasonic update the G9 and GH6 with new features then other manufactures better look out.

Appreciate all
The work you put into your videos.
Thank you! ☺️
Amazing review and comparison. You are such a PRO!
Just a thought I had while watching your video ... The solution to crop in 4k 60p on x is to switch APS-C crop full time. Then there is no change in focal length when changing the settings.
Thanks pav!!!! ☺️ you are totally right - I’m just greedy and want to make the most of the full frame output even if it’s only on a few modes!
Don't forget that the S1R of old can film in full frame 4k60 (technically 1.09x for all video)!
@@apcreativemedia Wow. Good to know. I rented one to check it out.
Thank you for an honest review! Both cameras are really great
Great review! Thanks for sharing 😄
A really great comparison! It`s wonderful to hear how some features work with & not so with different work flows! Definitely one of the most valuable reviews we have seen ♥️♥️
Aah thanks so much! ☺️🙏
I watch you cause you have a useful way of explaining the on-the-job nitty gritty. (better than the others 😊)
Like you, I am a pragmatic videographer so I just whack the Lumix on the tripod and I’m ready for action
I strap a monitor on the tripod leg (and it’s still minimal), It’s satisfying way for framing and M. focus
I don’t need Full frame just for the shallower DOF, I get better result with longer lenses on Gh5 / 6
Olympus 25/1.2 + 42 /1.2 + Oly 75mm is much more (3D) than relying on Full frame !
I also don't need the low light benefit of Full frame because Sydney has plenty sun
All full frame cameras struggle Electrnically > transfer rates / frame rate / heat
That's why the S5 2 and the X are different / thanks to the internal Fan
I do add a small side/back lights onto subject to separate more.
GH7 (Nov. 2023) is it! due to Phase AF/ the electronics & SSD
Thanks.
Loved everything you said here. Laying out the SSD issues was great, feel the same.
Wish they did a CF internal, love that on the GH6 now.
I was quite a reluctant adopter of the CFExpress card at first but ya know what I love it now! If it means I can bypass having to use an SSD I’m really happy!
@@MicroFourNerds especially that the price has come down a lot. That Anglebird 512gb SE card is awesome.
The S1ii may have CFexpress again since it can cope with the heat better; whereas these G9-style bodies rely more upon externalisation to the ssd.
Great review and insight, for me it's glass cost. Already bought into the Micro 4/3s eco-system after a move from Canon many moons ago at massive cost I swore I'd never change systems again I'm just hoping a GH6 mk2 comes out with the new auto focus system included.
If you go with S5 II (or II X) + 20-60, you can get a Sigma MC-21 adapter and bring in Canon EF lenses, available at a less massive cost, perhaps
"I'm in a bush."
I appreciate that that side of mft isn’t for everyone, but it’s definitely worth talking about as it’s a huge benefit of the system over all 😊
(Tho I totally agree the gh6 is chonky! Hopefully if and when there’s an update it can be smaller 🙏)
@@MicroFourNerds thanks…maybe OM will send you some of their products to test too!
So personally i think a perfect set up using sub $4000 cameras would be
S5iix as a main A-cam for most recording due to the dynamic range and noise performance.
A GH6ii or which ever m4/3 camera they bring out with PDAF as b cam, gimbal cam, etc for those slower frame rates.
Then either a s5, S5ii or perhaps a S1R (S1Rii someday) for high res photography when needed and as a 3rd camera for multicam set ups like a wedding ceremony
That covers most needed uses cases and each camera fills a different need but all within the same brand
I totally agree. I think the economics of the GHsix is so much better. But I think I’m gonna go with the X!
Your videos are just so good you should definitely do a video showcasing your settings for the S5ii & S5iix would be really helpful
Very interesting comparison vs GH6!
I agree, I’m a little annoyed that we can’t get everything that made the GH5 in a full frame, even after the second generation… it’s part of why I’m still shooting the GH5, it does so much, without much fuff :)
Thats hat the s1h version 2 will be for. You wont get the same thing for 2000 in a dull frame camera
@@andersistbesser it’s just too big

I had the same feelings about the S5 4k60 crop, so whenever it's going to be an issue I shoot in the 4k anamorphic mode all day but without an anamorphic lens.
How does that work out in the end
You just get a 4:3 APSC crop. It records a boxy 4:3 image, it plays back in 4:3, the stabilisation works as normal unless you switch anamorphic stabilisation on.
On the old S5 it's about as close as you can get to open gate. I think a lot of people overlooked it because it's called anamorphic 4:3. It's just 4:3.
@@maxresdefault8330 Im one of those that overlooked that as being an option. Great info thank you!
True
Un grand merci de la France pour cette sincérité.
Get rid of the klunkiness with the Kondor Blue cage for the X with the Kondor Blue Pro-Blade SSD top handle...
They’re so cool!! I love the concept so much.
Can you do a video comparison between the S5iix and the Nikon Z9/Z8?
Loving your video's by the way.
Hi, great video. I have hopefully not a silly question about your show motion filming. When filming in 120p in 4k, did your footage film in slow motion in camera, or do you still have to load your footage into an editing suite and make it slow there? 😊
The zve-1 seems to not have a crop. Obviously there are some downsides to it as well depending on your needs
HI
I still remember that video, when the gh6 came out in which you made a comparison with the s5 mark 1, and it almost seemed that the management of low light noise, in some situations, was better on the gh6.
What do you think about the photos?
by the way when will they announce a new micro 4/3 :P

Something had better come this year!! It’s been such a long wait! 🤞🤞🤞🤞
i would like to see the pro res comparison and the 5.7k of the gh6 vs the 6k of the s5iix. Still a nice video with epic footage!
I still think MFT has its advantages when speed boosters are considered which open up a raft of lenses
I wouldn't use adapted lenses on a raft on account of the lack of weather-sealing 😸
So crop only mean there is more foot work and comp framing?🎉Thank You
Trying to choose between Lumix S5IIx and Sony A7SIII. Like in your example I am seeing too much majenta tint in the colours.
In the talking head bit? That’s probably my colour grading - I was in a very shady green area and definitely over did it. Basically, if the colours look good, that’s Lumix’s fault. If they look bad, it’s my user error 😂
@@MicroFourNerds I mean in general, everyone elses too. I am told It's either green (Sony) or magenta (Lumix).

I own a gh5 and want a new canera. Its very hard choice between gh6 and s5 because both have big advantages. It seems that i want both to have everything covered.
I hope for GH6 II with new AF and perhaps SSD recording?
Excellent video! I feel you about SSD. Don’t use it with my GH6 as much as I thought I would
To be honest, I don't use the SSD myself.
Why not use a dummy battery?
@@anotherintrospekt6596 That’s an option, but you’ll lose power redundancy. For me, that’s a concern when I’m hand holding the camera. On a tripod it’s absolutely fine though.
@@RedFrameTech makes sense. Black magic has a better implementation on their pocket cinema cameras.
It's sexy and got the features and specs to match
@@MicroFourNerds Yep, I do see your point there.
Great video as usual btw, thanks for all your hard work putting it together.
Great video.
the noise was nasty. I didnt expect that.
Hello thanks, i have a question, the colours are the same?, i mean to have diferents cámaras but sale results on color gradin, thanks again
If you shot on an s5ii and a gh6 with the same white balance settings and exposure, they would be very similar and very easy to grade the same.

This is a very hard decision. The simplicity of the GH6 does make it more attractive. How is the comparative quality of the footage? What lenses do you prefer with it

When is Lumix going to come out with a G9 II?? I’m thissss close to making the jump to OM 😢
Hi! How does the DR Boost in the GH6 improve the noise performance in low light compared to the S5ii?
I tend to keep it on in every setting I can (which is basically anything except the 4k 120p) it really does a good job, but I don’t think it can compete with proper dual native iso on the s series of cameras

@@MicroFourNerds food for thought though, if the crop is messing with workflow, why not just put the camera in APSC? that way the crop is always there and you still have a bigger sensor size than the gh6… AND you still hand dual native ISO

Btw sounds like all you need to solve your SSD issue is to get another SSD...
The cable clamp will always be in the way of the screen from working properly unfortunately!
@@MicroFourNerds ah yes, that's unfortunate. But not so bad if you use an external monitor 🤷♀
well everything you said in the conclusion is basically why the GH6 is till my favorite camera I own and ever had (I own other systems and have used bigger high end sensor cameras) I used the S5II and what killed me is the APSC crop, its a fantastic camera but not professional enough compared to my GH6, the FF is irrelevant to me in 99% of the situations, so the GH6 being a underrated "crop sensor" is not a problem for me, so I didn't buy the S5II or X, the crop is a huge problem for me specially when you have the Canon R8 which is $1500 and doesn't have a crop in 4k 10bit 60fps, I know it lacks many features from lumix cameras but still, it has great autofocus, colors and no crop in FF, the lack of CFExpress cards for higher bitrates and codecs is a huge problem for me, so its not worth in my opinion (in my scenario) so between the X and GH6, I'd go GH6 without a doubt.
So what would you channel be called if you started today, with the S5iix?
Micro four nerds - I’d use it as my talking head camera, not to talk about in the videos. I have been using the s5ii since December actually for the same reason. Pdaf is just so much easier to make sure you’re in focus!

Do you have streaking issues with gh6?
I’ve never experienced it at all. And I’ve used my gh6 a lot in so many different lighting situations.
I’m going to buy the original S5 for APSC Anamorphic shooting with 10ms rolling shutter and full frame photography. It seems slow motion in full frame is no existent on this camera so I’m not considering it.
I’ll just shoot in HD like I did one the GH5.
Does the PDAF work with the HD resolutions?
I’m not sure you know. I’ve read on forums that it was contrast based on HD but I haven’t done any in depth tests personally.
If it can't be done without accessories, I don't want it. The X seems like an excellent fully-rigged camera for professionals, but my S5, 20-60 and a couple of manual f1.4 lenses fit in a small shoulder bag.

Did I just see you on a plane to Madeira?? If so I wanted to say hello but wasn’t sure it was you
You did!! 😁
dang. just when i thought i could live without a FF camera....
