I once was playing this very punishing 808ish song on DXS18XLF (x2) for a minute or two. Compressed legato subtones hitting 35hz and 50hz contantly. But then I started smelling something that for sure wasn't anyones perfume. Checked the back of the Yammie's and did hit the red light much too often.. Fortunately they kept on working after I lowered the bass level and up till today they still do. But this video made me aware to tread this bad boys very gently, and if possible let them cool down for half an hour first before moving them or tilting them back on their casters. Thank you sir ;-)

If you hear a rustling sound its loose voice coil turns! It got too hot and the glue melted.
Yamaha stuff is pretty bulletproof and 7 year warranty is amazing!

Wow I never knew about shifted magnets. This gives me something to share with my assistants on why to be extra careful when handling our equipment.
I'd like a keychain if you still have any 😊

I think Yamaha would cover that under warranty. If there’s no damage to the box itself I wouldn’t think it could have hit hard enough to shift the magnet. But I could be wrong, like you said maybe the heat loosened the adhesive.
I’ve dropped a dxr15 off the top of the sub while wheeling it and it bounced on the sidewalk, got it home and it’s still rocking.
I have a couple of the original dxs18’s and never had a problem with them. Interesting to see the driver looks really similar besides the water-resistant coating on the xlf.

Hi buddy thanks for sharing ive never experienced such of a magnet shift but I've heard about this happening in today's manufacturing sector its mass production not quality I've over driven subs were the voice coil had come apart also crunched the fibre material were the coil it coiled on but never had a magnet shift brands that are good is Das / Fane / P Audio / PV not the new JBL series prefer the old and still prefer non powered cabinets over powered because i generally change the driver on the cabinet as i know manufacture will some how try to save cost it's abit costly but in long term. No issues also i use amps twice the power of my speakers

From my experience, that pole piece shifted due to abuse of some sort. It is best to let subwoofer cabs cool down after playing them before moving them too. The heat "could" have softened the metal and then when moving them, jarred the pole piece. Looks like that sub handled the power, but overheated to the point of metal fatigue. How much power was going to it? I got two of these on order (backordered)...

Just came across this exact same issue with a XLF15 sub. For sure in my case though it was not due to heavy impact ( owned / operated by me - never rented) .
Furthermore I heard the sub let go mid-gig. It was weird because unlike my experience of properly 'blown' speakers, the sound quality was fine up until around 50%, and then it would turn to shit. I got stuck in there with a knife and sure enough found the shifted magnet. Can't say I'm overly impressed with Yamaha that these units can fail like this.

You know I have wanted to try FBT subs. Well their speakers in general for quite some time but I can't get them from any of my distributors. It's hard to pay retail for one brand when you can get dealer cost on another brand. But I would really like to try their 15" subline sub.

Its called the voice coil and it fits into the coil gap. Using just glue on the magnet is super dumb, big bolts are a much better idea. Look at Peavey BW drivers, they aren't the best but they are very tough and well designed (except for the foam plug in the back vent, which melts;)

Yeah, Yamaha didn't come through with the replacement driver like they said they would. I ended up buying one. I think it was between $400 and $500. I haven't had a chance to put it in yet though. Got rid of my shop due to the downturn in business. It's out in my garage right now and it's -15 so it might be a while until I make the repair video unless I feel like hauling it into my basement.
