      Nice! My current setup for small/medium weddings are 2 x QSC K12 & 2 x EV EKX 15SP bottoms. I obviously know this is a big step up but want to know how much of a difference.
      I’m interested in these DXS18XLF and DZR15 for larger events (outdoor and 200-300) people. Maybe 400 but not often.

      @@TheAngrySoundTech does the sub serve as a crossover? Other words, can I call set the sub to 80 hz and run out to my tops and therefore my tops only get above 80 hz or will I have to run an external crossover?

    • @TheAngrySoundTech

      Yes, you can use the subwoofer as a crossover for your tops. No external crossover is required. This was a big reason why I picked these subs.

    I own two of these and love them. The Hammer Casters are the best I've ever used...ever. The only thing worth comparing is the RCF SUB 8004 as, which is alot heavier and alot more money.

      @TheAngrySoundTech  5 років тому +3

      The 8004 was the other sub I was considering but I feel like the Yamaha has a better price to performance ratio and I guess weight to performance ratio as well. It's a good buy and I plan on getting more of them as I sell our other subs in inventory.

      @welchimusic7953 5 років тому +1

      @@deemownskee it's tough to compare because the output is different wattage. Sound is subjective so I won't say what's better however I will say that for my ears these sound incredible. The bass gain goes up/down +/- 35 as a setting. I usually put them at -8 or -10 because they will shake the paint off my house if I dont. So yeah they sound good. The RCF is comparable from a sound perspective but no these are different beasts entirely. I'd say if the venue is large and you have an unlimited budget go with the RCF option. For medium to small venues, on a budget, two yamahas make more sense to me.

      JBL’s tend to be tuned lower for rap, they sound overall fuller even on rock music, but if you want louder volume and better kick go with bandpass designs or horn designs, they do a lot better on higher frequencies. Remember under 40hz is good for rap, over 40hz is good for rock GENERALLY

      I would contact Yamaha. They might be able to repair your amp. If not I'm sure they can direct you to where you can buy a replacement amp module. I just checked my distributor website and it doesn't look like they stock amps for that model. If you run into dead ends let me know and I'll call my distributor. Sam Crabtree the rcf sounds beautiful and low. But I personally don’t like running my speakers into “limit” and I as many other people was very let down by how extremely early those 8003 start limiting. Rcf’s recommendation is to keep pushing them but I was not happy even when I did. For the money i think they are overrated and overpriced. The Yamaha are a good bang for your buck. I feel like as soon as I bought these I stopped booking big shows. lol I've had them out on rental more than I've used them myself. lol So sadly I don't really have an updated opinion on them yet. I'll be using them regularly this summer for our Bike Night shows tho so hopefully I'll get an updated review out mid-summer. I will say I broke a zipper off so you've gotta be careful if you're double stacking subs with a DZR315 on top and you don't take the sub cover off. Just flip up the front flap. I lift the 315 up by myself and sliding it back puts too much tension on the zipper. So now I'm down one zipper which is a little disappointing. I've had a surprising number of issues with Yamaha covers between my DXS12MKII's and the DXS18XLF.

      The interesting thing is those were the two subs at the top of my list when I decided to go with Yamaha. Unfortunately no one around here has any RCF gear so I didn't get to compare the two. I'm sure I've heard an 8004 at a trade show but not enough to make a comparison. Price was my determining factor and I will say I'm happy with the Yamaha's but I can't say if they are better or worse than the 8004. The specs are similar and you can get two Yamaha's for the price of one RCF.

      I wouldn't want to carry it everywhere but if you get the castors for rolling it around it's not bad to lift it into a vehicle or stack two subs. I do it all the time by myself. I have the 18" version. Haven't tried the 15" version.

  • @samcrabtree00ify

    Would 1 of these be enough for a function band performing at small/medium venues 100-200 people?

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  5 років тому +2

      I would say yes as long as you're indoors. Use high pass filters or run aux fed so you're not using up valuable sub energy for things that don't need it. You're not going to low end that will kick everyone in the chest. But I think it will do the job filling out the sound nicely. Also depending on what tops you're using you might even be able to run the crossover down to 90Hz maybe 80Hz.... 80Hz is a big maybe but lowering the crossover below 100Hz would help maximize the low output of the sub. Also put at least a 40Hz low pass on the bass instruments too. All this will help make the subwoofer more efficient since you'd just be using one.

    • @samcrabtree00ify
      @samcrabtree00ify 5 років тому

      @@TheAngrySoundTechThanks that sounds good. Our tops are RCF 732s and we have a couple of alto ts215s subs which aren't cutting it. The tops end up taking too much lowend so this looks like a good upgrade.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  5 років тому +3

      Just to give you a little insight into what the differences would be. Right now your Alto's put out 129dB each. If you put one on each side of the stage you have roughly 132dB of bass output. If you were to do a center cluster with them (which is what I would recommend to maximize your sub output) you would get 135dB of bass output. Frequency range is 35 to 95Hz at negative 10dB. The DXS18XLF will do 136dB by itself which is only slightly more than the center clustered output of the Alto's so you might not notice a difference in volume output. The frequency range is 30-150Hz at negative 10dB so they go a little deeper. So I'd say with going from two subs down to one Yamaha the main difference would be a deeper better sounding bass since it would be a higher quality subwoofer. These Yamaha's are the best sounding and loudest single 18" subwoofer's I've heard to date. I highly recommend them. If you look at proaudiostar's website they have a bundle deal where they include casters and a cover for free with the purchase. There's where I got mine. Also they offer free shipping.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  5 років тому +2

      I haven't decided yet. My initial goal has been to consolidate our existing subwoofer inventory from 5 different models down to 2 (maybe 3) high performance single driver models. I'm getting rid of all of our dual 18" cabinets. I'm still a bit conflicted when it comes to top cabinets. I will probably buy a set of DZR12's first so that I have a nice small matching system. If I like the DZR12's I may buy the DZR315 as well but with a 75 degree horizontal coverage pattern this would more than likely require using 4 of them at larger gigs to maintain good horizontal coverage. The issue with this is part of my goal since I sold our line array has been to maintain production capabilities to cover up to 1,000 people while keeping the system lightweight enough for one person to set up. I'm 37 years old now and don't much care for the idea of double stacking 8 subs and placing 4 DZR315's on top by myself. lol I've been contemplating buying something like the DB Technologies IG4T which would be nice for some of the corporate gigs we do. I'd like to do more corporate gigs and a slim column array would be perfect. But I'm worried I'd be disappointed with the output of the IG4T when compared to something like the DZR315. I'd hate to spend a ton of money on the IG4T just to be disappointed. So far I haven't been very impressed with the column arrays I've been doing reviews on. Sorry for the long reply. As you can see I'm conflicted when it comes to tops. More than likely tho I'll get the DZR315's if I like the DZR12's. Unless DB Technologies wants to send me 4 IG4T's to demo ;) But I don't see that happening.

      @@TheAngrySoundTech Good point about the horizontal coverage. that seems to be the case with almost all 3-way bins. The DZR12's are still monsters especially with subs and I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts when you eventually grab them. I too was looking at the Ingenia stuff but my concern is that they don't go very low at all if I ever wanted to use them in smaller gigs without subs.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  5 років тому

      The majority of our speaker inventory is DAS Audio but we do major inventory updates every 3 to 4 years or so. I actually stopped buying Action series subwoofers quite a while ago because while they get loud they don't do a very good job of hitting the low frequencies. The Action 118A does hit 137db but in deep mode only hits down to 45hz at negative 10db. The Yamaha is not quite as loud at 136db but hits down to 30hz at negative 10db. There were a few other reasons that made me decide to switch to Yamaha for our subwoofer inventory but basically it is a very new model that is one of the most advanced and well thought out designs on the market today. With that being said the updated Action 500 series will be out this summer and it will be interesting to see how DAS improved the Action series.

Eventually I will get two more subs and two more tops and this will be the PA for my 4 pc band (tradition rock band setup). Anyone have any advise/suggestions as to how to/where to set the DSP on the subs to get the best low end response from the kick drum? LPF at 80 and run them flat (no eq)? Where are you all usually running the level knob? Thanks!!

      @@TheAngrySoundTech do you know how low it plays? Approximately. I had a JBL eon618S and I loved that it dug down to 30hz when corner loaded, struggled playing below that so I opened it up and extended the tuning but anyways I wanna know if this Yamaha can play down to at least 30

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  2 роки тому

      The Eon 618s is rated to 31hz at -10db. The Yamaha DXS18XLF is rated to 30hz at -10db. So fairly similar in frequency response. The Yamaha gets a little louder so you'd probably get a little more noticeable low end out of the Yamaha.

      You won't damage your tops if you use the sub crossover and have it at 80/100/120hz. I tend to prefer a 100hz crossover but if I'm playing bass heavy music I'll use an 80 hz crossover so the sub can focus on the lower frequencies. I've never been a fan of a 120hz crossover. I think that mostly get used if you're using small tops like 8" speakers that have trouble hitting the lower frequencies.

      I had the same decision to make as you and I went with the DXS18XLF. I'm happy with my decision and would do it again. The main difference is more powerful DSP in the newer version and also a completely different sub design (Band-pass vs Bass Reflex). Also I should mention I don't own the DXS18 but I do own the DXS12MKII. It's crazy how loud that little 12" subwoofer gets. I'll have a review of that one out soon.

I have not had a chance to use the Vantec 118a but I do have 4 of the 18a's and I can tell you the Yamaha DXS18XLF outperforms the Vantec 18A. The Yamaha is newer and more technologically advanced. How would these compare to the etx 18sp?

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  5 років тому +3

      They are pretty close when you compare the two but there are differences that make me prefer the Yamaha. 1. The Yamaha has dual pole sockets. Both threaded and standard cup. (The EV uses a recessed threaded socket that not all threaded poles work in). 2. Yamaha DSP is a little more advanced and the XLR outputs of the Yamaha can be switched from Thru to DSP out. (The EV outputs are only Thru) 3. The covers for the Yamaha never have to come off which will keep the subs looking new. 4. The Yamaha is louder by 1db 5. The Yamaha is tuned to be louder at lower frequencies (Gotta compare the frequency response charts to see this one).
      With the Yamaha you do have to buy casters separately. With the EV they come with the sub.
      I don't think you would go wrong with either sub. The Yamaha is just a little newer and a little more advanced with a few features that were a little better thought out. The Yamaha subs work nicely with any brand of top speakers because of the DSP out feature. This makes them great for our rental inventory. The EV subs were designed to work with EV ETX tops. They want you to buy EV subs, EV tops and even the EV sub pole. I'm personally not a fan of companies that try to lock you into their ecosystem... Right down to the sub pole... But if you want an all EV system the ETX18SP is a good sub.

    Do you think two dxsxlf will out perform my event 218a

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  5 років тому +3

      I no longer have my Event 218A's so I can't do a direct comparison. But on paper if I have two DXS18XLF's and put them side by side there should be a coupling benefit that puts their combined output at 142db which is 2db more than the Event 218A. The frequency range of the Yamaha is also 2 Hz lower than the DAS. Now is this enough of a difference to to be really noticeable? I'd say no. I chose to replace my Event 218A's with the DXS18XLF in an effort to downsize. We just weren't doing enough gigs that required rolling in double stacked Event 218A's. So I think it's more situational. If you're doing big shows it's going to make things so much easier to just roll in a couple double stacked DAS Audio Event 218A. If you don't always need 4 dual 18's then the Yamaha's are the way to go for better versatility between small shows to large.
