I’m up for the challenge of fixing most issues with my BMW and after viewing this video I was ready to replace the thermostat. What I wasn’t ready for was NOT being able to remove the two hoses that were clamped on, after struggling for over 4 hours I gave up and decided to simply cut them off and replace them and while a lot of you might think that this was unnecessary it was not worth the effort of continuing to try to remove something that would just not come off and after looking at the old worn hoses I’m glad that I did. This job is truly a knuckle buster and now that I’m done I’m glad that I attempted the job. I also want to thank those of you that suggested the fan and the reservoir be removed, that extra space really helped out with this nightmare.
For anybody else doing this -- best tip I can give is to drop the intercooler, then you can get channel locks on those two hoses and wiggle them a bit until they come off.
Good video, paced just right. Should have mentioned the 12 minute bleeding procedure. *connect charger, seal up coolant system, turn car on without starting, turn on headlights, turn heat on high to auto at 84*, press accelerator pedal for 10 seconds, wait 13 minutes for pump to auto bleed the system, then top off coolant. more like this!
You don't need head lights on or have to put it on "high". All you need to do is set heat to max, put fan up 1 notch and press accelerator for 10 seconds while the car is on "not started" lol
You are clear and straight to the points that matter without a bunch of time wasting narrations like everyone else does which makes yours the best DIY video I’ve ever watched.
Thanks for getting to it, no long ass intro, no telling us how cool you are for 10 min, and thanks for not sugar coating the job. Bought mine from Amazon as well. Local parts store had one for $150, nope. Love the BMWs, but damn all these cheap ass, plastic parts...smh.
Yeah man that's what I really try and shoot for most of the time. Appreciate you dropping the feedback! I agree it's definitely a shame how much plastic they use on today's vehicles.
Thanks man I really appreciate that! It's only got like three hundred views. So hopefully it will catch on in the search. Comments like yours and thumbs up or what the help videos out a lot. Thanks again!
At my time at the BMW stealership I did a pile of these and of course the electric waterpump. Not too bad of a job after you do it a few times. It becomes almost second nature. Make sure you always buy the e-torx screw set and replace them. They are single use for the waterpump, t-stat, valve cover, etc.
Don't mess with the sub frame. Just access the two rear hoses from the TOP, after you move the reservoir aside. Jack stand height is perfect and a 6mm socket on a small extension makes quick work of those two rear hoses. I did loosen the sway bar but I'm not sure that's even necessary.
Thanks for the video, decided to let my friend mechanic do this. It was a horrible job for him. I guess even worse being a uk RHD. You saved my knuckles.
Thanks man I appreciate that. I definitely go a little too fast sometimes. But that's usually because I'm in a rush to get things done and hopped up on coffee sometimes
It not easy job I am was doing it in my driveway this guy is right it easy if u none what ur doing but I had to take out the water pump first before could get the thermostat back
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Np thanks for the video. I've been looking at multiple DIYs I need to change my thermostat this week-end. Hopefully it's not THAT bad...
Yeah it's certainly not the most detailed and best how to, but I feel like it gives a great idea of what the job involves. Thanks your comment and good luck with your repair!
@ 2:26 there’s an o-ring that goes to that part. I’m pretty sure the one on mine has gone bad giving the fact that it leaks coolant at low pressure. Do you happen to know the size / part number/ link, as I’m currently trying to source that exact o-ring. Thanks!
Will these thermostats also cause an overheat condition? I feel vibration in the pump, yet it overheats quite quickly ( but the gauge says 190 degrees and the radiator hoses are cool to warm, plus no heat.
Yes, it's possible for them to get stuck closed, but pretty rare from what I've seen. Usually overheat is caused from the water pump not having blades anymore
Awesome, straight to the point video; this job is a pain in the behind to do, due to the narrow space, especially for someone with chunky hands, like me; I got it all done and now I'm stuck with a lower radiator hose that won't latch to the thermostat; it seemed to be okay and after a test run it became loose, leaking all the new coolant I just used; the new kit I bought came with a Borg Warner thermostat while the old one was a Behr; I see a little difference on the end where the hose attaches to and I'm wondering if I should try a new hose or remove and return the thermostat and replace it with the same brand that was there before ; thank you for the video, you just got a new subscriber :)
After spending 2.5 hours getting my 07 328xi home, I'm going to attempt to do this. Did replace blower motor on my own...should be easy peasy. Ordered my thermostat from RockAuto...Amazon looks too cheap...may not last 10k miles. Had h2o pump replaced 2 yrs ago, should've replaced thermostat same time.
Could be that one of the O-rings in hose ends is torn or something else. Best to just get in there with a flashlight and see where it might be leaking. Dry it off and check
My bmw is 2008 3.0 it’s different, 4 way climate control , adaptive drive , I replace the thermostat and the water pump , I remove the fan and then I had to in-Bolt the AC , and I got it off from the top The water pump but the thermostat I got from the bottom from the backside, my swaybar link was different from yours, it’s hydraulic 😫😫😫
Yeah very nice video.. not. Who makes a video of how to remove a thermostat or ANY part at all pretty much, after they have already removed it? Jfc... pointless video.
Better than the video you made on the subject. If you can't figure out how to replace this thermostat after watching this video then you shouldn't be even attempting the job or working on cars at all. Just saying. Anyway, I appreciate your comment and feedback regardless.
Lol dude. Some people aren't mechanically inclined where they have to watch step by step with long intros and stuff.. some people have an idea, but are unsure and just need reassurance as to where something is. If you are one of those people that need a step by step guide on how to do something, budget bimmers is a better fit for you and they also throw in a few jokes and comedy. We don't want that. We want a 3 second intro explaining what's happening today, we want the guy to point to the location, throw. Few tips in, and tell us good luck. This guy nailed it... BRAVO!

Yeah I kind of just made it on the Fly just to show where it was located. Thanks for adding some tips for other people that run into this video.

Screw or socket set?
Do you recommend changing the thermostat and water pump at the same time?
Gonna be doing this repair this week on my homies car in the drive way with jacks swear it’s gonna be a pain but your vid is best tutorial so far
Awesome man good luck on it and thanks for the feedback
You're right about the driveway thing, but I'm a driveway mechanic anyway lol! The video was good anyway
Good video. Quick and simple. The thermostat is the one we're all mad at here. BMW is well tailored nice and TIGHT!
Haha yea for sure!

Mechanics have mechanical n engineering sense. Just an overview is all i need to jump in n send it
Thanks for the short and concise video!
Glad you found it useful, and thank you very much for the comment!
Most Excellent way to break it down, Much Appreciation for sharing your helpful energy

Top video..quick n concise...now I know I wont be doing this job lol.tnks
I wish all DIY videos were like this
Is it bad to daily drive without replacing the thermostat?
Thank You--It;-'s back to the dealer))
No problem! Hopefully still under warranty
Actually BMW had the aluminium one at the beginning then revised the part and new OEM are basically plastic to
oh ok good to know! Thanks for the info.

Dude, your video was awesome. Thank you so very much.
Yeah bro you were very helpful for what I needed to know. Thumbs up!
Thanks!
Great info... At least I know what I'm in for.. Thanks

How much did you charge
How much is the job?
Thanks for the video! I won’t be doing it myself but it was interesting to see.
No problem! Good luck on the repair
Boss! What does the electric wire cable that is attached to the thermostat housing do?
Thats all i need. Perfevt vid

Did replacing it fix your problem
Save some headaches and remove the fan shroud for easier access.

That’s what I did when I replaced my water pump and thermostat, I removed a few extra parts but it made the job so much easier
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try that next time

Is this the same one in my 2009 bmw 328i
I'm not sure
How much did you charge for that job?
My 2009 bmw x5 radiator fan full blast and overheat after 15mins drive. No code pop up.
My thermostat housing is leaking on my n54 engine E60 what could be the problem

2-3 hours on lift
2-3 days in driveway.

Any idea where to start to remove a AC compressor for a 2005 525i?

Does someone know how much Rpm the coolantpump has to run at cold star warm engine idle full load??
On Amazon:
*THERMOSTAT/HOUSING: amzn.to/2GsTbWh
*FACTORY BMW COOLANT: amzn.to/373eh5x

Am I the only one who thinks this dude looks like the twin brother of Lil Dicky 🤔🤔🤔
Haha no, if you look at my top five tool cart modification video, there was a ton of people calling me Lil Dicky
Bro I can't get the stupid elbow off the thermostat
Is this a 14 hour job?
To do it the way I did it no. What's book time? I don't know
SPECIAL tool for the clamps????OMG
Haha right!?
I can't even get the claps off 😅
Not me thinking I could do this myself 😔😭
