Awesome video! Super glad I was able to help with research here and there. For fun, and to facilitate my own lore addiction, figured I'd add some further context to a few things: The opening body horror segment that mentions tentacle arms and mandibles is from the Interface magazine. Interface was a semi-official licensed comic made to expand upon 2020, though its canon status has always been very dubious at best. The last issue released in its series, Issue 2 from Volume 2, which the entire issue was themed around combining the Call of Cthulhu TTRPG and Cyberpunk 2020 in a sort of rules and universe crossover. It's very not canon, but it is super freaky and has some wild art. The fate of the Night City Stalker is unknown, as the screamsheet in Cyberpunk 2020's core rulebook he's from is left open-ended for the GM to make up as they go along. The main objective is to protect a media for a full night against this cybered-up serial killer, and while it isn't explicitly written as a horror mission, I've seen numerous old forum posts discussing how 2020 GMs back in the day would run the Night Stalker like a slasher movie type villain. Either way, since the screamsheet adventure is technically optional and no ending for it is written in, its up to what you want to believe happened to him. Maybe he's still around by 2077? If you're wondering what the two final sourcebooks mentioned in the video are about, the Interface mag (as previously mentioned) is all about Call of Cthulhu, however Night's Edge is a semi-official 3rd-party book by Atlas Games which brings in vampires, vampire rulesets, and a ton of other vampiric themed things. It's not an explicit crossover with the Vampire the Masquerade series, but it's pretty obvious what the original writers and designers were going for. There's also a third, far more rare and harder to find, 2020 crossover with a horror theme. That being "The World of Future Darkness", a segment from an old White Wolf magazine issue (a fanzine for TTRPGs), which I can't figure out how official of a crossover it is, but it's intended to merge the worlds and slight rules of the World of Darkness series and Cyberpunk 2020. Also not canon at all, but it's pretty interesting. Happy Halloween, chooms!
It's less of a joke and more of a reference choom. It's altered to fit in universe, so despite being a reference, it can be taken wholly seriously as well.
Cyberpunk is a failed timeline, it may as well be hell on Earth with everyone gaslighting themselves into thrinking it'll all be okay. It's 100% a horror game and a horror genre
@@DrumToTheBassWoop Maybe the corpo takeover aspect, but I highly doubt we'll see any advanced cybernetic body augmentations appear with that orange dildo in charge 😂

Then the News Reporter creating news stories through deleting individuals. You see her reporting news stories of horrifying crimes.. then later you find out it was her, allegedly.

*_"00:07 AM, Midnight, November 1st 2024."_* Good watch on Halloween night. Been knowing some of the info in this video, but learned some new and spooky stuff too. Thank you for providing us with some good material tonight. And remember: *"The scariest monster you'll ever see is the one you notices every day in the mirror."* Cyberpunk, this world, doesn't matter... the source of all evil is the same.
0200 hours Sun, Nov, 03, 2024 for me lol military clock goes 0100-1200 hours for AM and 1300-2400 for PM just FYI, never seen 0007 hours before, that makes no sense lol to put that in perspective military time is a 24 hour clock so 0200 is 2AM where 1500 is 3PM lol
Not a honorable mention about the In game background music in Santo Domingo? Because I would at least like to see a story about the Dev team cancelling a quest linked to the spooky ambient music.
It's not explored in the story unfortunately, but outside one of the gun stores (I can't recall which, I wanted to say Southwestern Night City) there are some NPCs talking about organizing homeless hunts. That always stuck with me as pretty creepy.
You definitely fits perfectly into the puzzle piece of diversion. I would like to see how many people distracted by you and open up opportunities for those who you won't have the ability to know. You are perfect!
I can't post a pic on UA-cam, but in one of the lore books, Lilith is mentioned in a passage about an Arasaka project called A.D.A.M.(Advanced DNA-recombinant Artificial Man). Adam was created to become a biogenetic supersoldier for Arasaka, who's bioengineered metabolism required blood to operate at peak efficiency. A professor involved in the making of Adam helped him escape, and decided to work on a new project, one without the flaws of Adam, and she would be called Lilith. I'm not sure if this is the same Lilith mentioned by Garry and the cyberpsycho quest, but I think it's definitely worth investigating.
@@LayedBackGamers I've never seen this in any of the books either, in fact Smasher's whole backstory in the sourcebooks is very limited compared to his presence in 2077. It doesn't sound real to me whatsoever, but I'm curious if there is a source.
Still decided to watch this video since I love the cyberpunk horror stuff despite already having passed all side quests and maingame for ~200h of playtime. Just excluding endings without songbird and some of the maingame endings since I am willing to replay Cyberpunk with better hardware and tons of mods. Very good video! Keep going!
There is something about Cyberspace and how CDPR characterises it in this game (especially after Phanton Liberty) that makes it seem like another plane of existence, which is why it has such a strong eldritch or 'Weird' vibe to it - rogue AIs are inexplicable malevolent Gods that are scratching at the access points to our reality. Combining elements of cosmic horror and cyberpunk is not an easy feat, but they managed it. I do hope that there is more of this in the next game, but I also don't want them to lose the corpo oppression, the high tech low life, the consequences of full scale hyper capitalism etc that have come to characterise the cyberpunk genre. Either way, there is so much untapped potential in this IP.
Funny enough i was explaining to friends why it feels like a horror game. I just bought the game as a Christmas gift to myself and i am digging it. But this universe is a rabbit hole. I was looking for other info because something felt off. Questions and my hunger for lore i came to your channel. It feels like a horror game because of multiple aspects. The mysterious ways this game presents itself and the creeping suspense that it deplays. Not only do you have people scraping people for parts but the way it presents itself. The fact is how easy it would be to become a victim to anyone in this universe. The amount of serial killers in the universe and not to mention killing with no consequences. The game is unpredictable presented in multiple plot twists in quests. This game has surprised me but also horrified me.
I get the feeling these rogue AIs will be drawn to particular human mythologies and entities from religion and folklore, and then build or take a body that closest resembles said entities. Like Lilith was drawn to the chick with the stilt legs and arms and whacky hair. What if Erebus possessed a person who has red eye implants and looks like a monster? Or what if they build their own bodies from scratch, thus bringing to life these legends and myths that humans didn’t think exist.
In the sequel to Neuromancer, Count Zero, entities that are analogous to Cyberpunk's rogue AIs do exactly this. They present themselves to a gang of Haitian console cowboys (hackers) as various Voodou gods, Papa Legba, Baron Semedi, Maman Brigitte. They did this for the very reason you stated, they wanted to present themselves as something that the human mind could comprehend, and thus it adopted the garb of preexisting mythologies. If any of this is sounding a lot like the Voodoo Boys, I entirely agree. I've checked, and Mike Pondsmith has stated that he hadn't read the Sprawl trilogy until after he had finished drafting the lorebook for Cyberpunk, but I am deeply incredulous that he didn't draw any inspiration from the book series. There are way too many similarities.
The sinnerman side quest was one of the only ones in the game that I couldn’t complete. It was just so graphic and heavy. I couldn’t bring myself to manually hammer each nail while he screamed.
Johnny Silverhand standing witness in a mix of shame, pity and reverance in 25:11 is really cool imagery, he doesn't say anything but it adds so much to his character. and him being a byproduct of V's self, it's interesting to see V being both the executioner physically and the onlooker internally
Happy Halloween a day late. I must have been somewhat in tune to the whole vibe. I started from a save right after Clouds and ran into the monks sitting there by the statue. I just finished the River quests, so I got that Moo Machine horror show last night. Was a perfect Halloween warm up before I went out to a Cyberpunk/Steampunk live role play event.
This is how Silence of the Lambs is categorised on wikipedia. Psychological horror crime thriller. It's like, to get that true Cyberpunk feel, you take all those descriptors above, throw in Sci-Fi, Action, Noir, Body Horror and a few more for good measure, stir it up, add a sprinkle of crack and heavy metal... and you're good to go choom.
Before the 2.0 update if you got onto the monorails above where the android guy is from Blade runner fast enough. You could see a shadow walking towards you from down the rails. It was on the original xbox one version
What a clever idea for a video! Happy halloween man, and I hope you have an awesome thanksgiving in a few weeks. PS. just a heads up, "Cynosure" is pronounced "SIN-oh-SURE", not "sign-OH-sure". The word means "a person or thing that is the center of attention or admiration." - basically highlighting that the project was meant to be Militech's biggest breakthrough in military tech ever. It's also sometimes used to mean "a trump card, or a way of guaranteeing victory", which is also fitting given their blood-soaked rivalry with Arasaka and the fact that the project is an answer to Soulkiller. Thanks for running such an awesome channel dude. I watch every upload. :)
Since V gets hit with soul killer and doesn't even realize what's happened until he's told by alt and Johnny leads me to believe that there's at least a possibility that what makes a person a person is still there to some extent even if not completely whole
I love the lore of the net that it is kinda of supernatural . Bartmoss said they didnt create the net but found it, and that they didnt call daemons that for a reason lol
24:09 so funny thing. You can shoot him at the start of the Quest when he stops the guard saying do not kill. and the game lets you and still gives you the money and credit for 100% the game
I feel bad for creators like this whos views will collapse as the games popularity fades, then what do they do? I guess cyberpunk has the tabletop to keep it aluve
Has anyone noticed that Lilith appears and disappears few times around V if you search the surroundings for loot etc. The heavy breathing comes from that, I think.
Don’t get me wrong, because I love Cyberpunk 2077. But it has not scared me at all. Sure, it was dark & disturbing. But nothing got me frightened to the edge of my seat. Another reason why Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t affected me at all is because 8 words… I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. That story is pitch black, & I dare you to read it. It makes both 2077, Phantom Liberty, & Edge Runners look like G rated Disney movies. If anyone can make Mike Pondsmith’s & CDPR’s handiwork look kid friendly, the late Harlan Ellison can do that.
My bad boss been watching the videos just been dealing with a heavy heavy load of a very dear choom of mine ...I've been beat friends with him and his son for over a decade....just felt like a kick in the pants....
playing this game in vr and having anyone with a sandevistan run instantly at you is straight up one of the most frightening experiences I've ever had in a video game lmaoo. top-tier jump scares
Tbh, i know i would not last long in the cyberpunk 2077 universe, im too kind and trusting, maybe my girlfriend coukd protect me if she was in it as well
If chicago is so screwed why is there an ad showing train/plane rides from NC to there???? Maybe a hint for Orion?????? Could chicago be rebuilt by 2077? I hope they expand on it
It's hinted that they plan to create a Mag Train route to Chicago, but more than likely it's going to be another failed attempt at redevelopment. We shall see though. Maybe they'll turn their luck around.
@@LayedBackGamers Well, in the same NeoTribes adventure where the mutants get mentioned, Storm Technologies are explained to be rebuilding Chicago even in 2020, though it's slow going. Yet, Storm Tech are shown to have rather advanced technology all things considered, especially for a nomad group, so I think the idea is meant to imply that by 2077 it's been more rebuilt. Or the texture artist had just heard that Chicago was the beating heart of the midwest rail network and didn't check the city's status beforehand, which is probably the most likely answer.
Not that surprising considering that cyperpunk is inherently a genre firmly in dystopia genre and dystopian society often time have to deal with themes simliar to apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic genre as well as dying earth genres and there is plenty of horror in there plus cyberpunk do often time include science fiction horror and many of these genres i listed do instill a sense of horror and fear to audience keep in that in gothic genre which the both horror and science fiction genre got it start from along with science romance stories do distinguish the difference between fear and horror as feminine and masculine gothic genre for their respective gender audiences
Happy belated Samhain and thank you for running down that mention of vampires in the canon universe. I've been wracking my brain trying to recall it. Nice to see another choom who knows Cyberpunk is really cosmic horror past the neon lights. :)
I was shocked on my first playthru even at the body horror of playing a female V and having Johnny threatening to take over your body. The way he smacked the meds out of your hand and everything had me SHOOK

The way you spoke with a slow, monotone and stereotypical creepy voice was incredibly annoying. You also mispronounced several names & words. Just talk normally. I am shocked you didn't talk about the city's display of late stage capitalism and how miserable people are in this game. Horrible news stories, garbage and drugs everywhere, wealth inequality. That's why Cyberpunk is a horror game. It's not just the side quests, it's the setting itself. Cyberpunk is a warning for our world.
@@ThunderTheBlackShadowKitty I'm not going to speak in a UA-camr Accent while recording a Cyberpunk video. It would be disrespectful to the tone of the genre and IP. Not to mention the late stage capitalism bit is implied in my Soulkiller, Biotechnica, Sinnerman, and Chicago segments. I'm sorry you're having a bad day choom!
@LayedBackGamers No it's not that. I enjoyed the video but I expected a more in-depth talk of these themes rather than a full description of various side quests, all great in their own right. Awesome video! Super glad I was able to help with research here and there. For fun, and to facilitate my own lore addiction, figured I'd add some further context to a few things:
The opening body horror segment that mentions tentacle arms and mandibles is from the Interface magazine.
20:06 The Fury Road joke being taken straight got a chuckle out of me once I realised what you were talking about.
Charlize rhymes with 'peas', by the way, not 'flies'.
It's less of a joke and more of a reference choom. It's altered to fit in universe, so despite being a reference, it can be taken wholly seriously as well.
@@LayedBackGamers C'mon lol. Charlize Fury. Look at the name. Tonally, that is 100% meant to be a joke.

Cyberpunk is a failed timeline, it may as well be hell on Earth with everyone gaslighting themselves into thrinking it'll all be okay. It's 100% a horror game and a horror genre
Pretty much a certainty now, with Trump taking power. 😔

Maybe the corpo takeover aspect, but I highly doubt we'll see any advanced cybernetic body augmentations appear with that orange dildo in charge 😂

Hell on Earth? Wrong, because people get the luxury to taste death. I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is infinitely closer to Hell on Earth than Cyberpunk ever will be. And that story makes 2077 & Edge Runners look like Disneyland.
Dunno, it kind of seems like paradise.
We don't have Nomads nor nomad clans here in the US. We can't just drive out into the badlands and stop paying taxes/rent/mortgage at a whim.
We're stuck.
I'd trade this for that in a heartbeat.
"If you exist, you will be found" coming from the Blackwall ai that takes control of the spider robot thing in the phantom liberty dlc is so horrific. Tbh Songbird's entire story, especially the body horror stuff when you really think about what the nusa did to her and also the Blackwall ai stuff is just so disturbing
*[im midway into the awesome video]*
There’s a few serial deleters in Night City, There’s a netrunner that fries other netrunners brains- you find her shards all around NC. Then you find her in a chair fried, and some her victims in cages unalive too, in a shack like situation- you have to crawl through a hole around the back of it.
Then there’s another serial deleter(inspired by John Doe, I think his name is Jon Dough) you find a bunch of shards across the city, along with his work.. it’s plenty of shards attached to him, and his twisted John Doe like victims.
Then the News Reporter creating news stories through deleting individuals. You see her reporting news stories of horrifying crimes.. then later you find out it was her, allegedly.
probably John Doe, John dough is or was a 80's and 90's porn star lol

Best part is, it appears all these exaggerated sci-fi elements are becoming reality bit by bit irl😅
Cyberpunk as a sci-fi genre is slowly loosing its “fiction” part……
It was supposed to be a warning, not a playbook...
Just like George Orwell's 1984.
A book meant as a warning, being used as an instruction manual 🫤

military clock goes 0100-1200 hours for AM and 1300-2400 for PM just FYI, never seen 0007 hours before, that makes no sense lol
to put that in perspective military time is a 24 hour clock so 0200 is 2AM where 1500 is 3PM lol
@@Red_Lanterns_Rage Hahaha! TY. Ok, mea culpa, didn't know that one and already fixed it. You learn something new everyday.
Not a honorable mention about the In game background music in Santo Domingo?
Because I would at least like to see a story about the Dev team cancelling a quest linked to the spooky ambient music.
Where was this at?
@jessereaghen5099 Santo Domingo. Look for it on the Map. Set a map marker and go there. Then just listen to the ambient music it's creepy as Fuck.
It's not explored in the story unfortunately, but outside one of the gun stores (I can't recall which, I wanted to say Southwestern Night City) there are some NPCs talking about organizing homeless hunts. That always stuck with me as pretty creepy.
There's so much more than meets the eyes.
yes, Night City definitely transforms into Metroplex....
wom wom wom.....lol
Do you know what sourcebook and page this information appears? I've never heard this before so it would definitely be interesting to pursue
@@LayedBackGamers I've never seen this in any of the books either, in fact Smasher's whole backstory in the sourcebooks is very limited compared to his presence in 2077. It doesn't sound real to me whatsoever, but I'm curious if there is a source.
@LayedBackGamers Its in the Survival of the Fittest book, I think it's from 1993. I have the pdf if you need it
@Corgopolis I mean there are a ton of books to flip through and several mention vampires and bioengineering
@@LayedBackGamers it's in the first pages of the book
Still decided to watch this video since I love the cyberpunk horror stuff despite already having passed all side quests and maingame for ~200h of playtime. Just excluding endings without songbird and some of the maingame endings since I am willing to replay Cyberpunk with better hardware and tons of mods.
Very good video! Keep going!
That one where we save Rivers nephew was messed up dude
Maintenance (!) drone, Lilith and that farm freak Anthony are top 3 horror villains from the game.
I wish this video was like 12 hours long 😭 good work Choomba
not forget alloy knight in the greatest netrunners of the 2020s!
Loved this! I hope you do this every Halloween :) . Lilith mission freaked me out for sure
River is genuinely one of the saddest characters in the whole story NO MATTER WHAT he loses everything
This. Is really good and needs a part 2
The fact both game franchises that revolve around what happens in 2077 always end in a tragedy is so horrific. I love it.
26:06 watch the warning sign on the right it says warning and when it scrolls over to the next window it looks like it says warng
It was on the original xbox one version
this deserves more recognition, boosting of YT algorithm

What is that creepy background song? Haunting

Cyberpunk was a gift and a curse for me because now I can't play any other game.
The world of Cyberpunk is wicked. I wonder how come no asteroid destroyed the world.
Portal OST fits 2077 so well
Portal 2 soundtrack can give you that weird feeling of desolation
imagine a cyberpunk 2077 analog horror series where it focuses on the blackwall, rogue ais, and cynosure, and also songbird’s descent into madness
GOD THATD BE AWESOME
Ive "completed" this game as far as the map looks, clearly there is far far more I'm just unaware of!
Yes the true horror always not from the supernatural but from the system
Has anyone noticed that Lilith appears and disappears few times around V if you search the surroundings for loot etc. The heavy breathing comes from that, I think.
The scariest thing about Cyberpunk 2077 is that it's really just our current society, but with more advanced technology.

Happy Festival of the lost
Not that surprising considering that cyperpunk is inherently a genre firmly in dystopia genre and dystopian society often time have to deal with themes simliar to apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic genre as well as dying earth genres and there is plenty of horror in there plus cyberpunk do often time include science fiction horror and many of these genres i listed do instill a sense of horror and fear to audience keep in that in gothic genre which the both horror and science fiction genre got it start from along with science romance stories do distinguish the difference between fear and horror as feminine and masculine gothic genre for their respective gender audiences
