    each nostrils openness is determined by the opposite brain hemisphere. The doing brain or the intuitional brain. In the morning the left nostril will be more open and during work the right nostril will be more open. During meditation they will balance.

    Forrest, you provide a lot of useful information. Thank you.
    Unfortunately, I feel like a newbie after reading the comments!
    This is what I understand so far. HRV is something we should practice to lower our breathing rate. A low breathing rate (which hopefully comes naturally) will help in meditation.
    If I achieve a natural HRV, I will in theory be able to enhance my Hong Sau practice, which so far has been "touch and go"
    The Om technique presents a problem to me: holding the arms up speeds up my breathing... I can sense it, so that is probably hindering my practice. All I hear is the sound of my breath and sounds of crickets some times. This technique for me is absolutely "touch and go", not repeatable...
    Then, I am not sure when the 5 States of Breathing occur.
    Will they happen during Hong Sau?
    Finally, I am not sure how to relate HRV with Kriya breath. My Kriya breaths tend to be long, as I concentrate carefully during each Kriya. It would be difficult for me to complete one Kriya breath in 10 seconds (at my current HRV rate of 6 breaths per minute). Could you elaborate on the relationship between HRV and the length of a Kriya breath?

    • @ForrestKnutson
      @ForrestKnutson  4 роки тому +1

      The 5 Breath States happen as we dive deeper and deeper into HRV. ... Train HRV in order to train your Kriyas. So, do HRV Breathing, get the Hands Hot and Heavy (HHH). Then use this to inform your Kriyas. Practice Kriya and make sure your hands continue in HHH.

      When the body relaxes we can get sensations of feeling very light. We might also experience the sensation of falling, as the length of the muscles increases with relaxation they send a signal to the brain that we are falling. Because they get confused as the length changes. So, all of that is a very good thing. That would be my best guess of what you are experiencing.

    Immensely valuable indeed. Thank you for shedding light on Lahiri Mahasaya numbers and the connection between HRV and the breath states. I always wondered how does one get into Pratyahara with just 12 kriyas. I need a little clarification, HRV is just the beginning of pratyahara right ? According to your book you say pratyahara proper is penetrating the Kutastha and Samadhi is merging with the light in the spine. Could you kindly clarify.

    • @ForrestKnutson
      @ForrestKnutson  5 років тому +5

      My book was the best I had at the time I wrote it. My understanding has gone on considerably. Interiorization begins when the ida and pingala come into balance, and the heart begins to save heartbeats. That means the breath and the heart have begun to come into resonance. When you get to the end of the 5 breath states, it is in complete resonance! Which is very deep. Saving those heartbeats, and sitting very still allows the extra energy to be used by the yogi for self-exploration and realization. One of my students pointed out to me that without HRV you're not going to see the light. I agree with him. The beauty though, of the Breath States, is they will guide you into a hugely deep state for every single meditation, without ever having to depend on seeing light or hearing sound. It is completely physical and reliable.

      Thank you for your reply Sir. So, after the 5th breath state one continues with the pranayama until one sees the Kutastha (which now I understand is the state Lahiri Mahasaya labels as the state after 144 kriyas ) ? Penetrating the Kutastha is a long way from the 5th breath state though, am I right ?

    Hi Forrest,
    Firstly I would like to say thanks for sharing your knowledge.
    I have a few questions:
    What are the best practical benefits meditation has given you overall? Do you feel like you have a sharper mind, more energy, etc or are the changes more subtle and psychological?
    How do you think Kriya Yoga / the 5 breath states relate to the buddhist Jhanas? Is the end goal effectively the same or are these separate paths?
    Typically I've practiced within the Jhana framework and going through the 5 breath states seems to allow me to bypass the high bliss states entirely (what I consider to be the lower Jhanas) and go directly into a state of stillness / clarity.

    • @ForrestKnutson
      @ForrestKnutson  5 років тому +2

      Hi Chris! I just did this interview which talks about a few benefits my particular meditation practice:
      thriveglobal.com/stories/how-do-you-meditate-11/
      I'm so glad you're practicing the 5 Breath States! That's fantastic! Yes, exactly, they make your road short by bypassing many early states of meditation. ... I'm a little unclear on the Buddhist definitions, as there seem to be a multitude of interpretations. One more reason to define meditation by medical terms. If I can find a source of the Jhanas that makes sense to me, I'd be happy to do a video. ... I would say that the Buddhist and the Yogi are seeking the same thing, though they may call it by different names and attributes. Great hearing from you Chris!

    • @TheWeirdTechGuy
      @TheWeirdTechGuy 5 років тому

      @@ForrestKnutson Thanks for your reply. Could you explain what you mean by "the Truth of it all" as you say in the interview?
      In terms of a source of the Jhanas, you're right that there are many different interpretations of them, some of which are covered here by Leigh Brasington: www.leighb.com/jhanantp.htm. In general, Leigh has done a lot of study around the Jhanas - they even took fMRI and EEG scans of his brain while he went through the states and there was a paper published on it. It would be interesting to understand what the differences are between Yogic and Buddhist practices on a biological / neuroscientific level.

    • @ForrestKnutson
      @ForrestKnutson  5 років тому +2

      Chris, I wanted to thank you for mentioning this to me. Yes, absolutely. By completing the 5 breath states, you have completed all of the first 4 jhanas. There are 5 breath states, because we begin with nothing. Jhanas start with the first experience of a directed mind. So, they actually align most perfectly as 4 and 4. The higher jhanas are a fantastic program for the engagement of the right hippocampus. I talk about this in terms of dilating the eyes (physical, to create psychological) and letting go into the Ajna chakra in the medulla. Just beautiful.

    • @ForrestKnutson
      @ForrestKnutson  5 років тому

      Chris, I'm just seeing this second comment. Thank you for the link! I will check that out. ... "The Truth of It All" is in the Right Hippocampus, which is the home of every single picture. .... Everything that we think has as it's basis a picture underneath it. Fascinating, right? So, every time we think a word with the left brain, the right brain brings the meaning with a picture. It was Milton Ericson who pointed out about everything being a picture at heart. .... All of those images are held in the Right Hippocampus, and when we touch on that in meditation we go, "Oh my God, I know everything!!" and we want to go out and tell all our friends and anyone who will listen. But then we can't actually explain it, we just Know that we Know! Because we just hit the center of all meaning and all knowing in the brain! The 4 Immaterial Jhanas are actually a perfect description of Absorption (what yoga calls Dhyana or Laya) into that right brain structure. This is home of the Non-Dual state, what is often referred to as the Void.

    • @ForrestKnutson
      @ForrestKnutson  5 років тому +1

      Not the same thing. The "theta healing method" may eventually induce HRV, but the real link to HRV is the breath, not brainwaves. The breath is always the biggest handle in the body. The biggest tool to cause a cascade of shifts in body and mind. :)

  • @ashwins.selvarajan1714
    @ashwins.selvarajan1714 5 років тому +1

    one more question. Approximately how long is the kriya breath to get HRV with just one kriya breath ?

    • @ForrestKnutson
      @ForrestKnutson  5 років тому +4

      I hesitate to present that as a goal. Because striving for that could put you into stress, which is sympathetic. HRV begins at 7 breaths per minute, which isn't that low. That's exciting, because it makes Pratyahara (HRV) accessible for so many. You are doing it! So, no need to be in a hurry. Let your body dictate the time to you, and allow it to appear to you. The health of the whole body comes into play, and allowing things to come to you will help you to get to deeper and deeper states. ;)

    • @ForrestKnutson
      @ForrestKnutson  5 років тому +3

      @@ashwins.selvarajan1714 a big key is the heart. First we want to reach a state of emptiness or silence. That's where all my tips for no mind come in very handy. Then when we are saving Heartbeats, and we are in a state of silence or semi silence, then integration comes much more naturally. In that state it is the perfect time to ask questions and get answers from the gamma brain wave. These answers will be surprising because they don't come from the linear linguistic mind. They show us integrated knowledge of ourselves and ways that can transform Our Lives. So first save heart beats, then no mind, then we want to access the limbic brain. The reflection of the limbic brain is the heart. Which is why we hear so often of adding Devotion to meditation. The brain waves for this is Theta. So there you have an incredible three step process. Heart rate variability, no mind, integration. We know these as pratyahara dharana and dhyana.

    I have heard that a perfect kriya pranayama takes 22 sec for in breath and 22 sec for out breath, with the awarness passing through each chakras while breathing and with the throat constrained. Is it all necessary?

    • @ForrestKnutson
      @ForrestKnutson  5 років тому +3

      The out-breath should always be slightly longer than the in breath. This is very important especially in the beginning otherwise the person may not be stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system enough. Because they are so out of balance. And by by that I mean the most all of us have started this journey very out of balance. So this is very natural and this is why the out-breath has to be longer it's very very important. The constriction of the throat is only for those who don't practice khechari. Lahiri Baba always taught khechari. Now imagine that your tongue is in the nasopharynx. How well do you think you will breathe through your mouth? The answer of course is that you won't. I hope this helps. I would love to give you create a right here and now.
