I just shot some Federal G.M. Match 69gr out of my Sport II at 100 yards, using a Vortex 1x6x24 Strike Eagle. They grouped five rounds into ¾". I have also been able to get some choice handloads using the Sierra 69gr Match King to group five rounds into 1 MOA.
@@markboulanger1113 This is a fine rifle, a great value. No issues at all. I haven't heard of jamming issues. Absolutely love my sport 2! It came with a red dot,3 full mags which 2 are pmags, and one authentic green metal mag,and they’re all loaded with green and black tip ammo and some hollow points for home defense! It has a bright green laser and flashlight,Od green magpul furniture, and a vertical grip! I also picked up a new Taurus g2c last week from rural king gun barn which is where I may be working! The wife doesn’t like it as much as I do when I get new guns lol these deals just don’t stop falling into my lap!
Steve Hornady is now making some ammunition with lake city brass. He is not related to Ron Hornaday the racing driver. Horn a Dee! NASCAR fans often pronounce Hornady incorrectly. But that shouldn't distract from the exceptional content on this channel. Thumbs up, and thank you for your good work and great videos.
Yeah, my S&W M&P Sport is accurate too...though I wouldn't put a hunting rifle scope on it (unless I also added a Grippod and set it up as a Sniper rifle.). I'm good with a red dot.
Enjoyable and informative video. I have the S&W Sport ii. You didn't comment on the accuracy difference between the .223 and 5.56 round. I've read where the 5.56 "stages" better because the slot is designed for that fit and therefore it's more accurate. Can you comment whether one is more accurate than the other.
Thanks for all the work that you have done. Thanks for sharing your results. Hornady 10th edition says the best performance is achieved with 68 gr BTHP.
The scope is three TO nine BY forty. 3-9x40 Adjustable from 3 times magnification, to 9 times magnification, with a 40 mm objective lens. That is 3 to 9 by 40. Great info. It's crazy. You are the 3rd person in as many weeks to confirm that the S&W as well as 2 other companies really like the heavier bullet. Windham 16" and 1:9 twist will consistently hit vitals on a man-sized target at 300m with 2.5" groups and a 69gr. match grade (pick your poison here) the S&W performed equally as well. Great new channel. Subbed.
Thanks spook and it is hard to argue with the results. I hear a lot of conjecture around these AR barrel issues and based on my own results, the 1/9 twist barrels produce excellent results.
There was a time when 1MOA was a grail goal for precision bolt rifles; mil-spec is around 3MOA; now it's THE standard, for good or ill. I also understand that the M855 has accuracy problems because of its duplex construction; lead with a steel penetrator tip. This supposedly causes a very slight stability issue.
Correct. Most experienced shooters know the M855 is not a precision round (for the reasons your mentioned) but the problem is your average casual AR shooter does not and when they see them on sale in the big box stores, they load up on them.
That and the relative cheapness of 55gr steel is why I avoid the stuff. At Alabama ranges, even Tula or Monarch is quite accurate enough. PLUS, for the majority of situations, the cheap stuff is plenty effective, if the shooter does his part.
Excellent review of this rifle. I ordered one of these but it doesn't have the rear sight or fore sight on it. instead it has the picatinny rail for both, and it is set up with a Crimson Trace red-green dot optic sight on it. I'm thinking of actually getting the picatinny mount fore and rear sights to put on it as a backup. What I ordered is the Smith & Wesson 12936 M&P15 Sport II OR 30-SHT w/6-POS. w/CTRED/GRN DOT My experience is with the classic iron sights of the US Army M-16A1. I like your hybrid scope idea too. Chances are I will be using this in more close quarters work as you put it as well, and if I want more distance and precision shooting I'll go with a .308, 30.30 or 30.06 bolt action with a high power scope.
From what I gather in my research on this rifle is that Smith & Wesson did a lot of research and development on that Barrel now that is actually an awesome Barrel for the money like the material they made it out of and the twist I'm not a scientist but they put a lot of research and development into it from my understanding
so my sport 2 shoots very accurately with lighter ammo, i used the .556 55 grain black label ammo nd i shot a .4 of an inch from 100 yards. very expensive ammo but very accurate for my sport 2

Meanwhile, we infantry guys that used the weapon regularly, had the most basic stuff issued. I personally will put an optic on mine however, it will more than likely be a small reflex just because I like it. I just ordered some freedom munitions 62 gr. I'm working my way up trying to find what works best. My rifle has an after market barrel that is free floated.
Nice Review! My Sport 2 (1/9 twist) is a 4 moa rifle with Federal American Eagle 55gr (AE223) and a 2 moa rifle with Federal Gold Match 69gr BTHP. M855 is somewhere in the middle at about 3 moa.. I’m disappointed with the accuracy of this rifle and contacted S&W who said if I couldn’t get 2 moa or better with 55gr. AE223 to send it back to them (haven’t done that yet). I’ve seen other post that claim a decent AR15 should be a 1 moa rifle and still other post that claim most .223/.556 rounds are 2-3 moa ammunition, especially military M193 & M855. I’ve had this rifle for about 5 years and fired about 1,000 rounds but just can’t find that winning combination, guess it’s time to send her in..
ynotjf Im sorry to hear that about your sport II. I have the exact same rifle and at 50 yards i can shoot a .60 inch group with the tulammo 55gr and American eagle 55gr. My trigger is not stock and a added a very good muzzle brake and a Nikon scope. I also have my rifle on sand bags and it is very stable while shooting.
Try the 55 grain match steel from hornady. I've done a similar review and that round kills through my rifle. Sub MOA all day. down to quarter MOA groups. The Federal gold medal match was the second best performer. But at 34 cents a round for the steel match- you can't beat that with a stick. Also lighter grain varmint loads definitely do the trick
Is this rifle affected by steel cased ammo? I've heard horror stories about malfunctions worth steel cased ammo. I just purchased the m&p sport 2 and I'm wanting to get a bulk biton ammo and I'm scared to purchase the cheaper steel cased ammo for fear of jams or miss fires. Can you clarify this for me? Is tulammo a good ammo to use with this rifle? 223. 55 grain. Steel cased. Good or bad?
Need some opinion regarding the A2 front sight post being directly in front of the scope. There has to be some light transmission reduction in late-day shooting. What is your opinion?
The old sport was pretty spot on moa rifle.. I think some of it has to do more with the trigger not the barrel. The sport 2 is not a mil spec trigger as advertised. It's some odd cast hammer and the trigger needs a lot of polishing cause it's notchy as all be.. looking at your stringing I can see what looks like some trigger pull variance. Glad to see someone do this review, especially someone just starting with only a few subs.. pretty well spoken video for a new reviewer (I will be subbing) 👍🏻. I would love to see you re create this with 5 shot groups cause most of your groups look like they have a shooter influence through the pos trigger. I'd be very interested to see comparison vs a tru mil spec trigger as well. Not sure if it's just the hammer that's odd or both pieces but for $20-30 would be well worth the investment I think. The 1/9 is not an issue like everyone has complained. I have an original early model 15 that came with a 1/9 as well (granted it's 4150 CMV w gov profile and 5r) but it has always grouped moa or better with any half quality round from 55g-69g even lake city reman M855 is .75ish on a 14.5" barrel. The 70-77g due open a little to 1.5-2". It's shot that good since it came out of the box and 20-30k rounds later has only opened up about a 1/4" . 1/9 is more then capable of stabilizing a decent size round, just as 1/7 can stabilize varmint loads. Anyways keep up the effort.. until I cam across this looking for something to buy and stick my echo trigger into all I've seen were people complain about the paper stats and not actually do a full test before crying.
john smith yes the barrel is Cold Hammer Forged medium heavy 4140 Chrome-Moly steel , Its Chrome lined 1/9 twist 6 land and groove Rifleing perfect for 69-68 match grade Ammunition for better groupings than the 1/7 and 1/8 twist, it still has the Chrome firing pin Chrome line gas key and bolt carrier group with the Armornite coating on barrel , This Sporting Rifle is so Awesome and High Quality for the Price! Smith & Wesson truely wants everyone to own one ! Price should not keep you from that! Especially when you use this to Open carry in Texas and you need to shop for Ice Tea at Walgreens no problem everyone Loves the M&P15 Amen.
Thanks john - great feedback. I plan on shooting more 5 shot groups moving forward - especially when it comes to more of the non-match, bulk type ammo. I have a number of videos coming with comparisons using free-float barrels and match grade triggers on these platforms as well. On a final note, I used to fall for the popular belief that the 1/9 twist barrels were inferior but the more testing I do, the more I cannot support this theory. There are a number of factors that go into good accuracy and the twist rate / barrel cuts are only one of many variables and is not high on that list for me anymore out of the AR platform. Again, thanks for the feedback!
The Gaming Leatherneck , Yes The Company says so ,this is all there information. Call them up and ask them . Their new version 2 of the M&P15T and M&P15X And they come with 4140 Chrome Moly Cold Hammer Forged Steel w/ 1/8 twist and 5r Rifleing Chrome lined barrel, and it might have the Armornite hard Coating! Just Remember that I Believe in the new 6 land and groove Rifleing in the Sport 2 Makes for perfect Accuracy, See don't Forget When the Military Use the standard issue greentips 69gr they use a very short barrel found on the M4 11inch to 14inch barrel which means slower bullets from short barrels and no accuracy like a pistol compared to the Sport 2 16incher , It's heavier profile on the barrel is to disapate heat from the Short Carbine style Gas impingement system it runs warmer than Mid length or other , so yeah Lookup www.freedommunitions.com for good ammo and lookup Defender Outdoors website for Aguilla 62grain lead ammo no steel core made for Accuracy very high Quality Ammo.
Didn't read more than a third of that, but for the price it's not that bad. It was frustrating shooting 3 inch groups at 150 when hot. More of a fun beginner gun. This is actually the reason I am going to finally get a precision rifle.
Got the Sport 2 promo kit with bag and forward grip for $650 2 weeks ago. Ordered the UTG combat 4 stock for it and Magpul moe+ grip and drop in handguard to improve the grip on it
Just ordered this gun, but I load my own ammo now. Curious as to what load to use. I have 55 fmj and 62gr jsp bullets to use. I guess I’ll load both with different powder loads and see what works best. Also I have a Radical Firearms AR with a 1:7 twist and the 55gr bullet is terrible in it. It doesn’t matter how much powder I use. I want to try the 62gr in it but they didn’t come in the mail yet.
you can't expect much accuracy from the XM855, it's a light armor piercing round and the AP core is NOT always centered in the bullet itself, causing some wobble
Thank you very much for your video. I want to buy this rifle probably with a 16.5" barrel...do you think it is a good idea? In the United States do they sell it with a hard case? Thank you!
AZ Trigger could this differ any way rifle to rifle due to any slight variances in the machining of the barrels and ports? Im an amature at this and no knowledge of how these are manufactured but curios before I purchase an abundance of ammunition for storage purposes. Of course for home defense only. I could shoot a squirrel a 300 yards away with telescope.
It makes me wonder, how would this be received by the Vietnam era troops if they were given this weapon? Would they find it accurate & reliable enough to function as their main weapon?
Purchased one today, first thing, dust cover will not close, have to push the little rod down, while closing the dust cover, don't think i would recommend this weapon.

Good suggestion. I added it to my Part III accuracy review video ammo list for this rifle. Thanks for the recommendation!
Is that a 5.56 or 223?
Is this rifle affected by steel cased ammo? I've heard horror stories about malfunctions worth steel cased ammo. I just purchased the m&p sport 2 and I'm wanting to get a bulk biton ammo and I'm scared to purchase the cheaper steel cased ammo for fear of jams or miss fires. Can you clarify this for me? Is tulammo a good ammo to use with this rifle? 223. 55 grain. Steel cased. Good or bad?
“People who buy this rifle will usually just stick to lower price red dot or iron sights “
Me who just bought a eotech for it 👀
I was considering doing a Trijicon acog for mine lol
So helpful!👍
Which brand(s) offer the best open sites for the S&W Sport II?
817LDS how do you know its cold hammer forged? Are you talking about the sport 2? I would love it even more if it is haha.
The Gaming Leatherneck ,
Yes The Company says so ,this is all there information.
Ive decided to follow S&W AR 15 M&P Sport 2 it gives u more bag for the BUCK !!!!! Colt AR15 cost $ 1,000.00 S&W M&P sport 2 cost $750.00
the sport 2 is below $ 500 these days...cant beat that..:-)
Got the Sport 2 promo kit with bag and forward grip for $650 2 weeks ago. Ordered the UTG combat 4 stock for it and Magpul moe+ grip and drop in handguard to improve the grip on it
Can I use the magazine for 223 and 556 same mag
Just ordered this gun, but I load my own ammo now. Curious as to what load to use. I have 55 fmj and 62gr jsp bullets to use. I guess I’ll load both with different powder loads and see what works best. Also I have a Radical Firearms AR with a 1:7 twist and the 55gr bullet is terrible in it. It doesn’t matter how much powder I use. I want to try the 62gr in it but they didn’t come in the mail yet.
But is the 1:9 twist on this rifle enough to stabilize 77 grain bullets for a few or several hundred yards?
Nice tutorial
Thank you really good tips
Only heard you talking about .223. Do have video regarding 5.56 x 55 ammo?
Great video
Phenomenal review.
I just bought my first one.. nice
Very detail info. Thank you. ¿ What is the scope that you recommend on this video? I would like to added yo my rifle.
Winchester varmint x are sub moa in my sport one an two if you are looking for a good varmint load
Thank you.
I love mine so much
another great vid,,thanks..just subbed ya..
Have a link for those federal 77 ?
What magazines do you recommend purchasing for 30 round ones
Magpul
Was waiting on it actually being shot at range. But that's ok I know what mine will do.
What is your thought's or opinion of PMC 556K X-Tac 5.56 NATO LAP M855 62gr Green tipped Ammo for use in this rifle?
Them, what kind of AR15 are you looking for? Me, what do you have? Them, the M&P, is the only one we have in stock. Me that is what I'll buy.
Where is this mysterious 3 x nine x 40 scope from?
Is ~$600 a good price for it? Anywhere cheaper?
Right now, I'd say that's a very good price for it. I just paid $699 here in California.
you can't expect much accuracy from the XM855, it's a light armor piercing round and the AP core is NOT always centered in the bullet itself, causing some wobble
Its only the tip on xm855 that is steel, it doesn't have a steel core and it's also not considered an AP cartridge.
What about 5.56 Ammo Better than 223 ?
What dealer has one in stock?
Thank you very much for your video. I want to buy this rifle probably with a 16.5" barrel...do you think it is a good idea? In the United States do they sell it with a hard case? Thank you!
The rounds you can actually buy today will be what is best for you.
Wondering whether parallax was taken care of ...
I would doubt it.
the federal premium was 223 or 5.56
It makes me wonder, how would this be received by the Vietnam era troops if they were given this weapon? Would they find it accurate & reliable enough to function as their main weapon?
guaranteed better then what they had you would think the miltary would get the best of the best but that's definitely not the case
Purchased one today, first thing, dust cover will not close, have to push the little rod down, while closing the dust cover, don't think i would recommend this weapon.
You know cameras are portable right?Would have been good to watch you shoot it.I was actually looking forward to it.
There is ALWAYS a complainer. There are countless videos of AR 15's being shot. He is posting results in a "get to the point" video. "You know there are a lot of videos with portable cameras" right?
MOST ACCURATE BARREL FOR 55 GRIANS IS 1-10 TO 1-12, 1-9 FOR 62 TO 69 AND HEAVIER 77 GRAINS AND UP, 1-8 AND FASTER.
Its a great rifel for the 💰
It is not the tool, it's the training; in any sport.
A functional tool helps though. I will be happy enough with this, despite my training.
