The doctor was the scariest thing in the first few serials. It wasn't until the end of "The Edge of Destruction" that he became the character we all know today. I love season 1, and would recommend it to anyone
+Karl Hiramanek WOW! can you not read. he spelled the word "superior" it means better. and yeah... the only difference between Hartnell who and all the other is: they actually were trying to teach kids something.
He wouldn't know anything about teaching or learning though, considering he called Season 19 some of the best TV ever, and can't handle early 60s Doctor Who because anything that doesn't have an ADHD pace apparently is 'shit'.
In my opinion these early episodes knock the socks off of ANY of the new Doctor Whos, which are ruined by too many snazzy special effects and FAR too much intrusive music. I've watched Dr Who since it was first broadcast, and I'd watch the classics anytime over the new ones
I saw this episode on the 23/11/1963 I was 6 years old and it was amazing, I've watched every episode ( may have missed the odd one due to family holidays ) but I've certainly see every dvd available episode. Can't wait for the 60 th.
Scott Bieser Not at all, classics are infinitely better than the best of New Who when they're good. Just depends on which script editor and producer is in charge.
Hello! I bought a DVD boxed set of the First Doctor as a Christmas gift for my brother. First, we viewed the episode, "Pilot", that was numbered as, Zero. Then we viewed "Episode One: An Unearthly Child". Episode 0, gave us the year that Susan Ford and her grandfather are from! That was to explain their higher technology. But with Episode 1, being from the Planet Gallifrey, sufficed as enough of an explanation.
This is so great! Especially since you reacted so positively. I'm making my way through the classic series myself and i went in a wibbly wobbly order. 4, 5, 3, 1, and now I'm watching 2. The character development you witness during Hartnell's era is amazing I do hope you watch more of it!! Barbara and Ian made the Doctor who he is today.
Great reaction Crispy Pro! Most Doctor Who reaction videos are for 'New Who'. Some are fun to see as they help you re-live and feel epic moments through the emotional responses of others. Sadly there isn't many reaction videos to 'Classic Who', which I grew up with having the some of the same reactions as people now are having to new who. There are a few but it's not a real first reaction unfortunately because some of the people doing reactions to classic who have already seen the story and in some cases know the script as they quote it before the actors, so I don't see how it can be a true reaction when they know what's coming! It's refreshing to see you reacting Crispy because you've not seen classic who. Your reactions are real emotions and excitement making it fun to watch and remind classic fans of their initial reactions upon seeing these scenes for the first time as you are now. I'd like to see you react to The 2/3/5 doctors, the McGann movie, Green Death with giant maggots, Planet of the Daleks where the Daleks have whole scenes without humans and are being ruthless plotting, Earthshock with the big reveal of a classic villan (don't look into it but let your friends set it up for you and just watch see if you can work it out), the Mind Robber, Trial of a Timelord episode 13 cliffhanger and those from the deadly assassin. Mark of the Rani (wait till you see her TARDIS). Silver Nemesis 25th anniversary story, or the cliffhanger to episode 1 of remembrance of the Daleks. Maybe even the first classic spin off K9 and company. The Who addicts could just set you up with a classic story, tell you nothing about it and get a true, raw reaction. Keep em real Crispy.
It's great, isn't it? It begins the story really, really well, plus it introduces two of my favourite companions: Ian & Barbara. If you still haven't watched the classic series yet, I hope you enjoy it, as there are many more great stories out there.
I remember actually watching the first episode, an Unearthly Child, and I was amazed by how much of the show has remained the same over the years. It was an enjoyable first episode.
The first episode was way better than I anticipated. I thought that it maybe tool old Doctor Who a season or 2 to get good, but obviously it started with a bang! I shouldn't be surprised because New Doctor Who seasons start off fantastically as well. I'm so glad Unearthly child laid the ground work for Doctor Who so well, the TARDIS noises, and even landing on a planet with the stowaway teachers (like so many stowaways in New Who) and giving us that anticipation for the next episode. Thank you for posting, I really enjoyed this rift along with you ( :
I do recommend collecting The blu ray collection sets because I think it's a good way to watch the classic series and it has great special features especially the behind sofa
The first Doctor's farewell speech to Susan, "One day, I'll be back --yes! I'll be back!" is very classic, and has been used in anniversary specials etc. With the actress who played Susan still with us, I hope sometime the latest Doctor can fulfil that promise. For him, it's been many regenerations. For her, it's been 50 years. Time travellers can do that. He apologises for the five decades. But she laughs and says Gradfather, you visited me many times after this one, but from your point of view, those visits havent happened yet (wibbly wobbly). But he is there because it's near the end of Susan's life, the story ending with Susan's first regeneration.....a very unearthly child.....!
i need to point out your reacting to the "pilot" episode what happened was they had to film the first episode twice, because the first time they felt like the doctor was a bit too grumpy.
Notes: The movie, "Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang", has scenes in it that are homages to, "Doctor Who". 😎 Actor Peter Cushing, played "Doctor Who", in at least two theatrical movies. Susan, was younger. There were other children too. 😎 The Daleks were the foes.
Yes, more reactions to classic stories please! It's really interesting to see fans of the new series discovering the originals. Check out the DWM poll for best stories and go from there.
Cryer24597 I thought it was calculated in a way which averaged it out but yes the hype was terrible at the poll I can't wait for the one in 2018 to see what people really think of day of the doctor 5 years later
Two of the best stories were written by Douglas Adams of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fame, when he was "showrunner" (script editor). City of Death (co-starring Julian Glover) and The Pirate Planet. Both are 4th Doctor serials.
I’m here and I’ve seen every surviving episode and spin-offs. Now I’m trying to read the Target novelisations. I hear that someone hasn’t seen even one episode of classic who and I can’t believe it. Good job, Crispy
Funny watching your reaction, strange it still appeals, see I saw it back in the day (or at least the next week when IIRC it was repeated right before ep. 2 due to popular demand. :-)
port2483 that's a great story. I would also recommend the war games story. It's a ten part story and it was the earliest Doctor Who story that made me cry.
Although I watched Doctor Who in the Tom Baker era, I didn’t see any other Who until nuWho. I went back and watched this ep, then other classic eps. What got me is how consistent the Doctors character is. Even though he’s different (and developed some morality as time went on), he’s still clearly the same character. He can be obstinate, wacky, funny, frightening, and easily distracted and easily intrigued. Every doctor was different yet the same. I found the FX to be quite good initially, when they knew they were filming on a TV set. Later, when they tried to do more on a limited budget the FX got absurd. But in the very early days it was amazing what they did with so little
I watched this for the first time back in the late 70s when it first aired in the states. I was an adult, but I loved it and watched every episode through about the 8th Doctor. After that the show became a bit too silly for my tastes. We never had any of the 2nd Doctor’s episodes to watch except for the crossover series of the Three Doctors. The classic series were my favorite. Thanks for showing this.
The way they set the stories back then (& a lot now) was generally one in the past, one in the future. 1 an unearthly child / 10,000 b.c. (past) 2 the daleks (future) 3 edge of destruction (this was put in as a filler. I'm not sure if the daleks ran short or the following story wasn't finished) 4 Marco Polo (past) 5 keys of marinus (future) 6 The aztecs (past) 7 the sensorites (future) 8 the reign of terror (past) 9 planet of giants (present day-ish) 10 daleks invasion of earth (future) This tends to change when 3rd Doctor takes over, as he has been exiled to earth and while the TARDIS is "broken" he can't travel through space.
8:15. Of course the Tardis sounds the same; the BBC spent good money on that sound effect back in 1963 and they’re not going to throw it away after just 57 years... 😀
That's the thing some people don't quite realise - episode one isn't just "the first episode of Doctor Who", it's a rattling good bit of TV all by itself.
Watching one from each Doctor is a good idea. My favourites are: Frontier in Space, The Three Doctors, Vengeance on Varos, The Five Doctors, Sea Devils are some great stories
"Omg you can't be a big fan of DW if you haven't seen the classics" Yes, yes you can, just like you can watch better call Saul without watching breaking bad, the reboot was written as a good new jump in point, as pretty much every new doctor regeneration or even series is. It's the same bullshit with star wars, oh if you like the prequels you're not a real fan. Yes I am, I like the things that have the name on them and are quintessentially what that thing is.
Indeed, Genesis of the daleks is an amazing story, but another good one from Bakers era is An Ark in Space (I believe thats what it's called, been a while since I watched it) I remember that one being really good.
You mentioned that it looks as though these were filmed hand held. The truth is that in those days, the cameras were huge, and Studio D at Lime Grove was tiny - long and narrow. So, what actually happened is that the cameras kept bumping against the props
At the time it was ground-breaking and didn't need any sjw agenda. It was very different from anything else at the time and I have loved it ever since, despite some of the crap stories from recent writers.
I have no problem with the fact that the old man is mean and grumpy. Its character developed! Its funny, he started like a form of Bad Guy. Like Rupert Giles.
I have a tremendous fondness for this episode. I actually like the whole story, despite its wonkiness and oddities. Actually, some very good performances in there: Eileen Way (Old Mother), for instance, and Alethea Charlton (Hur), and a rather complex performance by Derek Newark (Za)... each of whom were to return to Doctor Who at other times -- Way with "Meglos" (Tom Baker), once again with Jacqueline Hill; Charlton in "The Time Meddler" (the last story of Hartnell's second season); Newark in "Inferno" (Jon Pertwee). And yes, from the very beginning the template was there; the die was cast, and the character -- and much of the feel of the show -- was established, in no small part due to Hartnell, but also to Verity Lambert and Waris Hussein. It's a pity we don't have any footage of the Marco Polo story, also directed by Hussein -- a rather good story, with some very fine moments, as one can tell from some of the reconstructions, or listening to the audio... but it would be very interesting to compare the two and Hussein's direction. Above all... the magic was there, from the very beginning. To my mind, even with some wobbles along the way, it has never really left, and there is an assured thread of continuity which has run through the program to this day....
Doctor Who most definitely taught me that cybermen are bald headed underneath their helmets. Most people even cybermen that are bald headed actually don't have any hair at all. The thing I found out on my own is that there are thousands of cybermen living in Arkansas.
I'm playing catch up but starting with the 4th Doctor Tom Baker era. It's cool and he's just terrific. From there I'll be wibbly wobbly and go for 6 and 7, they intrigue me. I truly regret The 8th Doctor didn't get a series. Loved him. Interesting how Chesterton said the Tardis is alive. I don't think any other companion, at least in NuWho, figured that out until the Doctor had to tell them.
I don't think it's necessary to watch entire stories to get a feel for classic Who, but some Hartnell stories are quite fun and worth watching all the way through: The Keys of Marinus, The Aztecs, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Romans, The Crusade and The Time Meddler spring to mind. Individual episodes that are worth seeing include the first episode of The Web Planet and and part one of The Space Museum, but you would be well-advised to skip the rest of the episodes in those stories (In classic Who, episodes refer to individual twenty-five minute instalments, rather than whole stories.) Personally, I think the three episodes of Planet of Giants are fun, but I don't think they work for most people. Also, I think the rest of the first Dalek story is pretty good, although, at that point, Barbara hasn't yet become the heroic character she will later prove to be.
I just subscribed because I enjoyed your reaction. Thanks for the video! I always share my viewed videos to, "Facebook". I write my reactions sometimes, rather than leave comments, with my posts. 😎
These are the classic stories I have seen: An Unearthly Child The Daleks The edge of destruction The Aztecs Planet of Giants The Dalek invasion of Earth The tenth planet The enemy of the world The web of fear The dæmons The curse of peladon The 3 doctors Robot The face of evil The robots of death The talons of Weng-Chiang Destiny of the Daleks Earthshock The 5 doctors The caves of androzani Vengeance on Vargos The 2 doctors Remembrance the Daleks The Happiness patrol Doctor Who TV Movie And I’ve seen all of the revived series.
That's a mixture good mixture of the various Doctors' stories. With the exception of the 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy. The Happiness Patrol is a stupid story & folks hadn't quite figured out the best way to play that iteration of the Doctor. Watch the 7th Doctor episodes with Ace as his companion - interesting stories & good chemistry.
An Unearthly Child is my favourit Dr. Who epsiode of all time. The following three episodes in that story is pretty rubbish, but the first one is so great. If I were to recommend two more storyarchs to watch with the first doctor, I'd say go for The Romans and The Time Meddler. Both are great.
Back when I first saw the first story, I would have agreed with you. However, over the years, watching it over again, I find the following three very odd, but -- despite some rather risible moments -- actually they have grown on me considerably. Some of the performances are really quite good, and much of the cinematography is very fine, quite atmospheric. The main problem is a few of the special effects, and the concept being rather difficult to pull off... yet, withal, they did rather well, in my opinion. I realize this is a story which tends to polarize people quite a bit, but speaking for myself, my own opinion of it has risen a lot with each viewing....
ive seen all the new ones from the 9th doctors 1st episode. Ive also watched all the sarah jane episodes. And a few of the old episodes. Ive also seen the movie
I'm suprised that you haven't seen any classic who :P (well, until now) I would recommend watching Genesis of the daleks, It's a Tom Baker story, it's really neat :)
How does a person call themselves a fan of Doctor Who when they haven't seen the pilot episode and doesn't even know the name of it? It's important for fans to see it to understand its beginnings.
That 1st episode is still ground-breaking isn't it? I'd suggest you check out City Of Death; Douglas Adams scripts, timey-wimey goings on and Tom Baker at his maddest.
Susan making up the name tardis was retconned in big finish's the beginning. She only thinks she came up with it. But time lords called them tardis before susan
I know it's been over a year, but if you're going to react to anything (especially since you've seen Unearthly Child), do yourself a favour and react to Remembrance of the Daleks. Despite its general popularity and acclaim, there's literally only 1-2 people out there who've reacted to it in any way, which is a shame for such an action-packed episode where the Dalek's get to go on a massive rampage in their last (and best) story of classic Who.
Dr Who is a great Idea to keep it going but the problem with it is there are way to much changes. For example The first doctor had family members. If he can regenerate then also his family members.
if she made that name ,why then , in the "name of the doctor" the people who were fixing stuff whatever said "who would steal a faulty tardis". hmmmmmmmm
Been watching old who for ages, got a hell load of old who DVDs and the unearthly child is one of my favourites, Can you watch..... The dalek invasion of earth, the five doctors, the daleks (first dalek story) and survival (the last old who episodes) also the 1996 to movie
LOL, they didn't need to recreate the 50's. This was filmed in 1963 and things looked pretty much the same in most respects. One interesting (& sad) sidenote. This episode aired November 23, 1963 & it was slightly delayed because the BBC was still reacting to John F. Kennedy's assassination the day before.
I actually really enjoyed an unearthly child including the whole caveman part but I can see why it didn't make doctor who a success until the second episode with the first daleks.
"Back in the day that would have been ground-breaking." No it wouldn't. It had a really low budget. Viewers at the time certainly were used to the slower-paced storytelling and black and white (which actually looks cooler because it's unlike real life imo) but it was far from ground-breaking. Perhaps the music was pretty mysterious, Delia was far ahead of her time, but nothing else really can be called "ground breaking"
Actually, it wasn't quite the first BBC sci-fi serial of its kind. Before Doctor Who premiered in 1963 (and was completely overshadowed by the Kennedy assassination the preceding day!), there had been Nigel Kneale's rather more adult "The Quatermass Experiment," followed by "Quatermass 2" and "Quatermass and the Pit" in 1953, 1955 and 1958, respectively, which infamously "emptied the pubs" when it was time for the final episodes. Apparently, Mr Kneale absolutely *loathed* Doctor Who!
You can understand after watching this episode as to why the show has lasted so long...
Stormageddon101 then again... I mean I’ve seen something as good as it didn’t make it past the pilot... you never know
@@Cassxowary The Daleks saved it. This I know.
@@LeftytheGansterGremlin Absolutely Right, Nicolas
@@thewolfmann2713 Thanks, buddy!
The doctor was the scariest thing in the first few serials. It wasn't until the end of "The Edge of Destruction" that he became the character we all know today.
I love season 1, and would recommend it to anyone
I watched this when it first aired as a five year old, addicted ever since!
Fuckin hell man your like 60 then
58 to be exact.
THEROBLOX BOY I watched it when I was young.Now I'm 60 ... NO YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A TIME LORD!!!!AMAZING EH?
Harry Flashman your 55 right now!
Lucky, you saw all the missing episodes. What was the best episode still missing from the second's era?
That moment when you realize Doctor Who IS Doctor Who, even with the first episode.
Robert Charles It's not though. Even compared to most of the classics, the first couple of seasons are very different.
+Karl Hiramanek WOW! can you not read. he spelled the word "superior" it means better. and yeah... the only difference between Hartnell who and all the other is: they actually were trying to teach kids something.

Elijah Brandt It was a joke.
***** I did. Because it is. John Nathan Turner saved Doctor Who.
This episode was magic. Hartnell and the other 3 regulars were in great form and it's strangeness and mystery just kept you watching.
In my opinion these early episodes knock the socks off of ANY of the new Doctor Whos, which are ruined by too many snazzy special effects and FAR too much intrusive music. I've watched Dr Who since it was first broadcast, and I'd watch the classics anytime over the new ones

You're a True Fan, Crispy. Of course by modern standards the classic eps look quaint and a bit cheesy, but they do have a charm, don't they?
Yes. That reason is like...700 classic episodes to ~100 modern episodes.
Scott Bieser they also have had better stories and characters...
Scott Bieser Not at all, classics are infinitely better than the best of New Who when they're good. Just depends on which script editor and producer is in charge.
I think black and white is much more atmospheric :-)

Most Doctor Who reaction videos are for 'New Who'.
Some are fun to see as they help you re-live and feel epic moments through the emotional responses of others.
Sadly there isn't many reaction videos to 'Classic Who', which I grew up with having the some of the same reactions as people now are having to new who.
There are a few but it's not a real first reaction unfortunately because some of the people doing reactions to classic who have already seen the story and in some cases know the script as they quote it before the actors, so I don't see how it can be a true reaction when they know what's coming!

You should watch the pilot episode, the TARDIS sound is so different.
These are the classic stories I have seen:
An Unearthly Child
The Daleks
The edge of destruction
The Aztecs
Planet of Giants
The Dalek invasion of Earth
The tenth planet
The enemy of the world
The web of fear
The dæmons
The curse of peladon
The 3 doctors
Robot
The face of evil
The robots of death
The talons of Weng-Chiang
Destiny of the Daleks
Earthshock
The 5 doctors
The caves of androzani
Vengeance on Vargos
The 2 doctors
Remembrance the Daleks
The Happiness patrol
Doctor Who TV Movie
And I’ve seen all of the revived series.
My first episode I ever watched was `The Pyramids of Mars'... I've been watching ever since.
@@ishtarian Interesting! Perhaps it's an aquired taste? I might give it another chance some time.
I saw that first episode. I'm not sure but I think it was broadcast live, most UK TV in the early 60s was.
Rememberance of the Daleks is amazing
ive seen all the new ones from the 9th doctors 1st episode.
Ive also watched all the sarah jane episodes. And a few of the old episodes.
Ive also seen the movie
Prymids of mars is a good one and you could also watch the three doctors
"Robert" - first Tom Baker set of shows.
Ha ha, watch out Doctor for the villainous Robert!
Tom's first is called "Robot".
+Dean Strickson Damn autocorrect! 🤖
Genesis of the Daleks, Resurrection of the Daleks and Remembrance of the Daleks are my favoutie Classic Dalek episodes.
I'm suprised that you haven't seen any classic who :P (well, until now)
I would recommend watching Genesis of the daleks, It's a Tom Baker story, it's really neat :)
How does a person call themselves a fan of Doctor Who when they haven't seen the pilot episode and doesn't even know the name of it? It's important for fans to see it to understand its beginnings.
Tenth Planet, first cybermen and Hartnell regenerates.
i just want to say u deserve more subs.
That 1st episode is still ground-breaking isn't it? I'd suggest you check out City Of Death; Douglas Adams scripts, timey-wimey goings on and Tom Baker at his maddest.
watch trial of a time lord pleas
One of the best
You should watch the next episode, since it ended on a cliffhanger. Them again, all of season 1 ends on cliffhangers
I watch all the doctor who classic episodes, from spearhead from space to now.
Susan making up the name tardis was retconned in big finish's the beginning. She only thinks she came up with it. But time lords called them tardis before susan
I'd carefully research which episodes to watch. Don't think you have to watch them all in order. Some are more classic than others.
CMS Handy change is why the show has survived stop being childish
@@quietdemon8138 he's just asking a reasonable question what's wrong with that ?
seen them all except missing ones of course, you should totally watch the rest:)
I'm going through the Tom Baker era right now. I love Classic Who
if she made that name ,why then , in the "name of the doctor" the people who were fixing stuff whatever said "who would steal a faulty tardis". hmmmmmmmm
You really should watch 'The Time Meddlar' or for Troughton 'Tomb of the Cybermen'
the ABC rerun the entire series back around 2005 I think when the new series started, I saw some but I wish I saw them all.
TENTH PLANET
You've never watched An Unearthly Child before now? Are you even a fan?
Doctor who can't be your favourite tv show ever if you've never seen many of the classics
Some people just don't have the funds to invest in the series so he can't help if he hasn't seen it
Amir Pourghoureiyan every single episode is available for free online
+manzilla48 it's just unlucky if some fans haven't seen them but they shouldn't be judged any less if they haven't
Amir Pourghoureiyan nothing to do with luck, no excuses in the modern digital age we live in
+manzilla48 whatever
Been watching old who for ages, got a hell load of old who DVDs and the unearthly child is one of my favourites,
Can you watch.....
As mentioned below, Watch City of Death
Where did you find this? I'v been looking for it prettig long now and i really want to watch it.
I was pleasantly surprised like you. The next episode however....
The next 3
indeed!
I actually really enjoyed an unearthly child including the whole caveman part but I can see why it didn't make doctor who a success until the second episode with the first daleks.
Also the JFK assassination
Watch one of the classics that has the fourth doctor in it.
genisis of the daleks is a good one
+Simon Halliday got it on DVD: )
Something I don't understand, is where do we find these episodes? Where can I buy some classics?
Watch out for the fine bro's there react thingy
Watch The Talons of Weng-Chiang,great story shame about the giant rat though
The latest companion has been revealed! 😃
link to the first episode?
You really need to see some Tom Baker episodes like "The pyramids of mars"
this was awesome 😂😁😀
Adventures in time is cool too its the real story of this episode n how the show came about.
4th Doctor's Genesis of the Daleks.
..have you watched the 'pilot' version?
where did u find the the OG Doctor Who
Is your hair brown or Ginger??
I think that the first doctor is by far the sassyest doctor.
The Cave Of Skulls? The Forest Of Fear? The Firemaker? Where are they?
He's reacting to the first *episode*, not the first *story*, hence the reason we don't see him watching them here.
+Super Rubberducky To be fair, they're worth skipping.
+evildonkey no I quite liked them. thought the acting and props we're great considering the super low budget and low hope for the series at the time.
Great video
React to the the time warrior! First ever Sarah Jane episode and sontaran's with hair!
"Back in the day that would have been ground-breaking."
No it wouldn't.
The titles and the music were ground-breaking,
Actually, it wasn't quite the first BBC sci-fi serial of its kind.
Apparently, Mr Kneale absolutely *loathed* Doctor Who!
look up, convincing William Hartnell
Just start with Power of the Daleks and watch each story in order, you're welcome.
