Between state inspections, lack of parts and vehicle complexity; taking on these newer vehicles is akin to walking a minefield at times. I often get ribbed on my work truck a 1990 CK2500 Silverado. But I can fix or replace anything on it. Parts are everywhere for it, parts are inexpensive, its paid for and most repairs can be done for less money than one or two monthly payments on their trucks. Of which most I have repaired with them having less than 40K miles on the clock. Glad I am close to retirement is all I can say. Going forward mechanics are going to need a diagnostic mindset more than ever to make it. Thanks for the series Ivan.

Well that was certainly a learning curve, most garages would have had it sitting there forever, most cars are now over engineered and beyond any mechanic, so top marks

I think the real lesson to people is let your money tell these makers who don't supply parts at the very minimum 10 years and ideally 20 years you are going elsewhere. The other odd thing is they make more money on parts and service than they doing selling the vehicles. That's the dealers. You would think the dealer network would be up in arms about this to the makers. I believe in the free market and hate govt. getting involved but with the price of vehicles and how much we depend on them for a functioning society congress should mandate they make replacement parts for certain time limit. I don't think 20 years is unreasonable but the bare minimum should be 10 years.

This reminds me of something that happened back in the 1970s. A coworker told me his pickup wouldn't start on high humidity days. He said if he took the solid state ignition box in the house and let it dry out then the truck would start. He said there were some small holes in the bottom of it. I told him to take it in the house for two or three days and put it where it was warm enough to make sure it was completely dry inside. Then fill the holes with epoxy or some sealer, so moisture couldn't get back in the module. He tried that and never had any more trouble. That might have worked with the cracked module you had from eBay.

These new cars and trucks are a computer nightmare. Lack of replacement parts keeps the planned obsolescence method of manufacturing going strong. It is incredible that there are so many modules in new vehicles. Computer updates, software updates, it's all too much. The most complex item in my 67 VW Beetle is the AM/FM stereo radio!!! My 2014 Porsche Cayenne S is a total computer nightmare. I am blessed that after 10 years and 133K 0n the odometer, nothing major has occurred. But that day will come... Fantastic videos. Eric at South Main Auto turned me on to your channel, and I can't wait for your next video!

Probably a good learning experience for you too for next time! But rusty bolts snapping off! Geez, you'd think they would know by now about salt corrosion on bolts by now!

I think we went through 4 different module rebuilders until we found one that would actually work on those modules.

    No warranty for the part.
We guaranteed that we'd put all the bolts back if possible, and that it 'wont fall off' !

@@mistsmogguru8378 Sounds like a pretty good philosophy as long as the vehicle isn't a 'beached whale' as Ivan calls them! There's a number of advantages to this way of operating I can see ->
      ● saves you time having to chase the parts so you can concentrate on the repair itself
      ● saves you being out of pocket for the cost of the parts
      ● it gives the owner a feeling of involvement in the repair, & a reassurance of the source of the parts
      ● gives you indemnity against getting the wrong parts
      ● ensures that the customer is serious enough to fork out cash towards the repair

    • @mistsmogguru8378
      @mistsmogguru8378 5 днів тому

@@nevillegoddard4966 many traders insurance terms , the small print, do not cover you for the fitting of used parts. They usually tell you roughly what parts.
The other thing is that the customer knows you're not inflating the prices as they bought them. At their risk.
We never recommended a supplier. All we offered was somewhere for the parts to be delivered.
Be mindful of giving customers access to their car and keys whilst you are in charge of the vehicle. We were covered by many cameras and caught customers taking their keys or something from the car and blaming us. It happened 4 times and the CCTV saved us. They'll try anything. Our work authorisation forms included storage charges for non-payment should it come to it.

Vibration or other stuff (tin whiskers?) causes corruption of the signals. Weirdness ensues. It has been a year and a half with no problems.

Was such and issue on BMW early 00's that I remember seeing companies showing the process on YT. Lots of precision machining to remove the flood epoxy from the inside of the casing. then a single purpose machine to install and micro weld the new gold bonding wires.

I'd like to see some hacking to the root cause and make the computer accept any module with the right part number. Give that crap a labotomy and tell the manufacturer to suck eggs.

Ivan, I always wonder if you are billing for all your time. Comebacks too.

Whats wild is i dont know of anybody these days who is on the up and up about anything newer than ‘18 and its a stretch for them to know anything ecu related on those newer models at that. Come next generation were not going to have but a handful of kids even interested in cars at all.. let alone kids that are gonna wanna learn about how to fix these new piles of rolling junk.. but by then everything will be throw away so itll all be modular and cost 5 or 6 figures to replace

I have a 2017 3500 Ram I bought new to pull my 5th wheel camper. I’m on my second ABS module. And abs light is on again the truck only has 12k on it . Ram has a problem with ABS.

Ivan, you are certainly persistent. I'd say most vehicles are not over engineered, they are overly complicated for the task at hand. This is a matter of poor design. Couple that with a dismissive attitude toward supporting their models that are in service, it's a wonder that there isn't a larger inventory sitting on dealers lots. I long for some better alterative.

This is just a good look of the future, bulb burns out throw away the whole vehicle because repair would be too expensive. Dealer lots full of overpriced junk the public cannot afford. Looks like we're going back to the horse and buggy days, at least when the horse dies on the side of the road you can still eat it.
