Whatever you got, I need some. Your personality alone is gold. I would be beyond flustered because I am so old school. I still remember vividly the day I realized that there was a difference between metric and SAE. True story.
The repair job that keeps on giving. It must be madding when no one really knows what the correct part numbers are
You'll love Dormans new video, "bulletproof pentastar" not an oem part in sight, Ivans hell 😂
I like the way you dont panic when everything goes wrong Ivan, and just laugh, good luck....Fred
Yeah he's tough,, I'd be getting visibly irate.. lol
That's just ONE thing that makes Ivan so good.
Had a 2015 Ram. Drove phenomenally well. Very comfortable. Towed great. Zero problems. Just had a feeling I'd run into this kind of stuff eventually. I sold it and put my 2000 Excursion back into service with some small fixes.
Sometimes it can be a pain trying to bleed a brake system that's been all apart. I did a master cylinder on a GMC Sierra recently that was a nightmare to get bled right. I used a pressure bleeder probably did 5 or 6 complete bleeds plus the ABS Pump bleed procedure several times also. I did finally get it bled though, never had that much trouble bleeding a brake system before. Not sure why that truck was such a pain.
The VIN re-write went better than I expected. Sometimes when manufacturers make running changes within the model year it can be confusing what you have and what you need to repair it. In 500,000 miles the 'ol Marquis has never given me any issues with the anti-lock brakes, so the next time I turn the key it will fail. Your shirt didn't come off on this one; I want to see the conclusion. GREAT VIDEO!
no shirt for PRIDE MONTH!
Why do you not like the latest Thinktool software? The latest version remembers selected data PIDs when you go back and forth between menus. That is a game changer for me. I think you prayed for this functionality to be added in a previous video 😂
I have not updated since May 2023 and also am curious about this. Ivan, have you gotten any info from them you can share? Love the content as always! 😉
I also bought a pros when you said how much you liked it years ago, I have really liked it as an affordable machine for the home gamer. Would love to hear what you don't like about it, I am usually pretty religious about updating, now I am nervous. Thanks
New OEM repair parts availability is a real problem, good luck with the older trucks.
It's not even that old.
I've been telling everyone we are the new Cuba when it comes to parts. That's everything across the board. I can usually find stuff but on occasion I don't. Pretty soon you'll be seeing all kinds of crazy rigging going on.
It is never fixed until Ivan is wearing his Rock Star sunglasses!
Biden sunglasses. Looking mighty cool!
What a saga with that thing. Kudos to Ivan for his determination.
Ivan, clearly your concern is customer satisfaction. This is why you are so well known and admired. As far as all these failed attempts to service the ABS, this is clearly a case of poor vehicle design.
that ABS and brake work was a very tough job..my old Civic is not leaving me..ever...Outstanding work,I'm glad somebody gets it right,
I bought a Mazda from the dry state of Texas. All kinds of rot started showing up. Green crusties. Coastal areas, and river areas abound with flood cars. It was taken to a southern state known for washing branded titles. Just a caveat on buying parts. Good video, thanks/
My weekend entertainment is watching your amazing ability. Stand tall and proud Ivan
I think anybody that can repair these modern cars with all these over complicated computer systems deserves a medal or an easier job
Ivan, I'm gonna have to ask you to make videos daily. My coffee tastes better when I have PHAD to go with it. XD The catfish were shy yesterday, but I did haul in a gar that was about 40-45 pounds. That bad boy was 55" long and fat! I don't eat that crap, but they are a blast to catch on rod and reel. In that spot I have landed a 48", 50", 52" 55" and a 58" gar. All on rod and reel. Maybe I should be come a gar fisherman. o.0
Give Ivan an invite. I'm sure he will be pumped up for the fun.
@@2nickles647 I'd have to come up with a car for him to fix to justify the travel. XD
A wise old Mechanic told me back in the day, "If you go to the buffet and eat everything, you're going to get sick"....it took me years to figure out what he meant by that...I finally figured out what he meant.....RIP Hilley Newman....
Morning Ivan and the PHAD family.
Dittos.👍👍🇺🇸
No wonder I like watching Ivan.
A customer dropped by 2 weeks ago. He told me about a local shop could not repair his car ABS system.
I got it under my shade tree. Plugged my scanner in.
A few ABS codes popped up.
He had told me that the shop had tried.
I took a look at the module. The harness was not completely seated.
Cleaned up the connector and reseated it. This time less codes. Still not happy.
After spending a few hours of back and forth. Bad module.
Found one nearby.
Since I'm working I don't have the luxury of spending time all day. I work on a vehicle. Then I have to call the customer and get the customer to get the part.
I installed the used module and it's working.
Now the final scan. Not happy. Steering wheel sensor is bad now.
He gets the part ordered. Wrong part. He had reordered the sensor. Waiting now.
What a mess! It's unbelievable that a vehicle can look so good and be so new, and yet be nearly impossible to repair. And then tools that are less useful after an "upgrade". What a mess!
It's not just in the automotive industry. Software specific applications are everywhere and become outdated the very second you purchase it.
Great video, Ivan! I don’t know how you keep from going insane working on these cars! 😵💫
Oh boy, I was afraid of that. Using used parts has to somewhat stress Your phenomenal guarantee policy. That’s gotta be a bit of a hurdle. Perhaps that was not the issue in this case. We will see. I’ve got a Big Horn to check out today, one that You repaired many years ago. They put new batteries in it and illuminated the dash holiday lights! Truck was also in a very serious front end compaction event a couple years ago and they had it resurrected. Should be interesting. We will see. 👍👍🇺🇸
Dodge abs the gift that keeps on giving
The Ram, owner and mechanic will never be happy, its the nature of the beast. Junkyard is happiness.
...sorry to see the saga continues...
You're like me in that the tough ones show up after everyone else has had their hands on them. My latest is a 2002 Toyota Tacoma V6 rodent chewed injector #1 wiring harness and blew the driver in the PCM. Now waiting on the power transistor to replace the blown one. Wish me luck. Thanks Ivan!
I was going to say happy ending, but that last message leaves you thinking. It's a major issue that manufacturers treat cars as disposable, after only a few years on the road. Having no replacement electronic parts makes repairing almost impossible. Hope you sort this out, Ivan! Waiting for an unexpected Part 3.
There is likely a procedure to reset the "permanent" codes. It usually involves driving a specific drive cycle and as long as the malfunction is no longer present, you would be able to reset the code, again, following a specific procedure and order of operations.
Well, that was not the ending I had expected.
Bless Sorry to hear about the Think Pro. As a future one time scanner buyer, it's hard to choose. Another AWESOME 👏 repair. Thanks 😊
I have 3 1996 Chevy 1500 trucks. One of them had a problem with the ABS, I replaced the Kelsey Hayes unit with a rebuilt unit (same part number) and it didn’t fix it. I looked at my 86 truck and master cylinder and booster looked identical so I got brake lines for an 86 and replanned the lines, pulled the ABS fuse and the brakes are much better than any of the 96s and now you can bleed the brakes at the wheels without all the BS
Amazing repair, finding all the parts
I'm working on a 2015 chevy express with similar issue, KINDA. A car lot I diagnose for bought a 2015 chevy express from auction. The van was ONLY missing the abs motor not the model or hydraulic model/unit. The car lots mechanic took a motor from a parts van they had and installed just the motor. If anyone's familiar with that abs unit they know the motor has a lobe on the shaft, you can't just slide the motor in. The mechanic forced it in broke some stuff and nothing worked. I told the car lot to buy a unit. They bought a used unit and their mechanic installed the unit. After bleeding the system numerous times plus using the scanner he couldn't get a pedal. Then I get a second call to come down After doing the self bleed with the scan tool 4 times the pedal was back, abs motor worked as it should. The next day I get a call the abs lights on and they can't communicate with the abs. I go down there because I was in the area that same day and the abs was dead. I'm not sure what happened but I'm going down there Monday to find out. I only had a scanner with me so I couldnt really do the test I wanted to.
Amazing work
I'm with you on the update for the Think tool pros. I'm guessing no way of going back is there?
Always interesting videos 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
From 2004, cars suck .
Dumb electronics.
Many parts made to fail.
It has become a scam.
Glad I'm out of it, mostly !
Window cleaning, car cleaning, painting, grass cutting.
Much easier, less outlay, happier customers.
Car owners expect miracles, for pennies.
I put up an expenses board including tools and equipment costs. Something to point at when they tried to get discount.
No car left without payment in full. When asked for credit, I asked if they could get our supplier's to wait longer and the supermarkets to let me have food and wait until I get paid b4 paying, then they could have credit.
They paid.
Special orders paid for upfront.
Work sheets signed off and work approval forms signed.
A friend of mine gave people the benefit of credit and they obviously let him down.
It's a difficult trade.
All trades are. They require skill, knowledge and experience. And expensive tools.
Getting payed is an ordeal sometimes
Yes, a-holes who demand service then screw you around on payment or won't pay. Glad i never was caught up in that but my brother was, and he had trouble with scumbags like that. Or wanted a quote, gave the job to someone else cheaper, and then call and want him to fix the screwups. He was in the renovation business, retired and now still getting calls from people wanting him to do stuff.
@@KStewart-th4sk I forgot to say about the expecting you to fix other people's fek ups.
Also the amount of people who expect you to borrow tools and equipment !
There were some shops etc we'd help. Legitimate ones. But if I needed something, I'd buy it.
It felt good to have a rant lol
Nice catch on the 'initialization.' Thanks Ivan!
haha, wouldn't be a holiday special if it were THAT easy and wrapped up in two episodes!
With the ABS module hanging on the cable, any internal G sensor or accelerometer calibration would have been messed up as it had a different orientation when installed - that would need the initialisation re-running to set the true neutral G values.
Until then, the acceleration readings could have been totally wrong and causing the unit to mis-interpret what was actually happening, & malfunction.
Yeah I was thinking tthe same thing.
The dynamic sensor isn't in the ABS controller or module. It's located inside the airbag module.
My thoughts exactly. When it asked if it was on level ground, and the module is hanging upside down, I figured that might not go well.
If you watched the entire video I re-initialized it during the test drive and it was still glitching 🙃
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Ivan, I did see that, and that one would give you a true result, bad or good. The first one was never going to give you a true result. It was a simple error, no big deal. Love the channel, and your skills.
I would bet that when the brake booster code sets it uses the ABS pump to try and "boost" the brake pressure to make up for a failing vacuum booster. The code set with all the brake pumping and messing around with the module.
Excellent work Ivan
Great job Ivan, i hope the 7377 viewers are all subscribers >> love when you think out of the box .
and the saga continues
One way to pass emissions with a small evap leak is to disconnect the battery since that will reset the test cycle which takes like 48h (on a RAM 2014) to complete, so during that time the code won´t set and you can get it inspected and then continue to find the problem while driving the car. Great video, learned a lot.
@@pmgear that won't work as the monitors won't be ready and the emissions inspector will tell you to come back after driving it more miles
@@Randomvoice246 good point, maybe I just got lucky or lax inspector?
@@pmgear I know because I used to work as an emissions inspector..no more than 1 monitor can not be ready
Ivan did not have to go RAMBO on this case study. Great job Ivan!
I can't believe the Ram is back. I would have gave up a long time ago
That truck is Ivan’s boomerang 🪃. He threw it out and it came right back.
I had that problem on my 2008 Suzuki Grand Vitra, Abs module failed and Suzuki wanted $1800 for a new ABS pump and module plus labor. Bought one off Ebay for $200 and it worked just fine then I found another unit on Ebay for $80 so I bought it for a back up. Luckily I didn't have to deal with vin numbers. Saved my self 2K
Man, 90s cars were the best. Reasonably modern but no stupid computers where there's no need for them. And even if the ECU dies you can always Megasquirt it.
You'd think that the scanner could turn that damned dinger off! LOL
I always get the part number from the dealer because EBay has a lot of part numbers in place of the fitment vehicle information of the make and model.
We went through this 6 months ago on a 2010 Ford Escape. Brake pedal almost to floor, then pumped up by depressing pedal, it would go back down. Replaced master cylinder still no good. Then did abs bleed but still no good. Bled all brakes manually, did the abs bleed again on scan tool, still no good. Did abs bleed again 2 more times then suddenly all worked well and has ever since. This all began with sudden hard braking causing abs to initiate, then pedal went to near the floor. I don't know if these are just to complicated with too many hydraulic circuits or what, but the stated procedure for repair did not work several times, then, out of the blue, it was good again. Still don't know if it was the master cylinder or the abs module and have no way to determine which or either were bad/defective. Newer cars are nasty to work on. Inititially took it in to a shop who stated it needed new rear brakes. However, visual inspection by us indicated that was a bad diagnosis. This caused us to dig in to this situation ourselves and glad we did. Shop wanted $475 for rear brakes (outrageously expensive). We repaired it for under $100 and never touched the rear brakes other than bleeding them and fronts as well during the above procedure.
Since brakes are vital (more so than engine) and are needed for safe operation of vehicle they should be rock solid in design without ABS modules. Oh, when they work they are great but when they don't you may not have ANY brakes. How does that make a vehicle more safe??!!
Classic stuck valve in the ABS module. See my Mazda video 😉
I think you might have to pump the pedal whilst the ABS module is activating as you need to push the air out
You mentioned the new Tundra....I wonder if Toyota will get the engine issue sorted out. I feel like the 2nd gen with the very reliable 5.7 has gone up in value. I am keeping my 20 Tundra till i die. Based on my YT channels, Stellantis is going bankrupt. The brand is in a world of hurt.
My dad has a 2010 Tundra with the 4.6. It hasn't been perfect, but it's a good truck! He had a 2000 Tundra that I really liked driving, but frame rust became an issue. They don't make them like they used to 😢
There were running-production part number changes on the affected parts a few months ago so it's likely safe for Scotty Kilmer again.
@@GregoryGlessnerViolin I have my truck KROWN RUST protected every year. Frames can be the Achilles heel on Toyota trucks. Take care of the frame and most everything else is just regular maintenance. Now, the new Tacoma and Tundra is definitely a crap shoot.

Tool is cheap enough to chuck in the river if it P's me off too much!
I'm not as tolerant & patient as Ive though THAT'S for sure!
Let's hope for success with this billygoat pickup in part 3 Ivan!
But u don’t need a scan tool for that service light it’s just a combination of button presses haha…
If you have a power train engine light how ever then you’ll have an issue to diagnose
@@fastbagel Oh really? Awesome! Could you possibly tell me please? Thanks HEAPS! - In advance!
The 10th VIN position is the year. So "J" will be a 2018. It started over in 2010 with "A" which could be a 1980 or a 2010.
These trucks have like 5 variations of brake light switches 😄
I don't know how you keep your sanity Ivan. These newer cars would drive me insane.
If it's a booster vacuum signal fault, check the crimps at the vacuum pressure sensor connector terminals. I've had heaps of them have poor contact causing intermittent drop-outs of the the signal. Can send you photos.,
Ivan to brakes: "Do you bleed?"
Brakes: "Maybe..."
205489 on my 12. No warning indicators. Plenty of rust though.😢 I always recommend using a pressure bleeder. I have chased air pockets too many times especially on Mopar vehicles.
You're not alone in your part # nightmare on these trucks. Mopar makes so many part # variants and revisions it's insane! I once came across a RAM truck that had 24 different windshield part #s for the first 6 months of MY production, and half of them didn't even fit the hole...
I'm curious what this glitch ends up being! Definitely not something I've run across before! :)
Again, a check of original ABS controller for broken solder joints on the PCB pins would be an educational exercise.
I'll never understand what people see in Dodge Chrysler products.
Awesome
Hopefully he got that POS inspected before the glitch came back !!
I have a Plantinum s10 updated to current software and it’s still great. What was bothering you about the Pros software after the latest updates?
Good Work!
I think boosted Motorsports has a way to reprogram the vin
Nice video Ivan.
"Life is a Bitch.....Then.....It keeps on getting Bitchier, and Bitcher, and Bitcher." You did, again, Yeoman's Work. You Never Quit! Very Very well done.
I knew on your test drive when you started bragging how nice that dodge rode and it was a nice truck that you would jinx yourself. lol Nobody will ever talk me into owning a dodge! But I like your Trump sign. 😊
Hello Ivan, it's tough right now with Chrysler!, I'm repairing a COPART 2020 PACIFICA , parts are scarce even used parts and quality of new parts is dim.
I've had much better luck writing vins on the bench, when you have it hooked into the system. It's pulling Vin information from somewhere else and gives you a mismatch.... At least this is how it is with the PCM
Looks like Ivan smoking a bong. Invite me over!
You must have known that it would a PITA simply because it is a STALLANTIS even though it is badged as a Chrysler Cheers Ivan Happy 4th of July with how things are going in the political arena it may be the last.
Who invented the check engine light ? Where does he live ?
The Smog Police invented the nasty Check engine Light and they all live in Washington DC
The California Air Resources Board, who mandated OBD and DTCs in 1988.
Hudson Motor Car Company in the 1930s.

Right, as if cars didn't have check engine lights before that😂
@@atticstattic The modern CEL and DTCs are out of GM earlier than that (we saw Ivan handle those in the '85 Olds) but we all have them now because of CARB.
We made a tool to pressure fill the ABS pump before Install. Maybe ?
The more I watch the problems with modern cars, the more I want an old LADA.
The Car Wizard has one for sale
I know the older Mopar Vin is wrote during abs module Initialize
Could it be because you initialised the ABS module when it wasn't connected to the brake hydraulics. It would explain why a re-initiallisation when fully installed, cleared the fault! Excuse me if this is a stupid comment, I know nothing about diagnostic scanners, I'm trying to learn by watching great videos like yours!
20:55 "Afre" 🤔🤦♂ I know it's been a hott 2024 summer....... buhhht 😊🤣
Had kinda same problems with a 2015 ram [1500]...88,000 hwy miles. The abs was a challenge , that's Fer sure. Abs light kept coming on after repairs. (Same parts you replaced ) I didn't really have any direction to go so I replaced the tipm...
Seems to have solved problem as no codes or lights for abs for over a year.
Did the tipm fix it...?.. or did just moving wires fix it...?. Anyway... just throwing that out there....
👍
Wow Glitches are my nightmare.
Surely those open toe work boots are the wrong part number?
Hokyshate I'm heading out to try this on mine lol. I've done this 100 times and it hasn't recoded the vin but I'm gana try it again lol.
It wouldn’t be a PHAD case study if there weren’t a few glitches. 😂😂
Its a bummer that the area he lives in will not allow him to build a shop for his business. Something about Code.
Ivan should build an addition to the house. Bigger garage for his vehicle during the winter months. Im sure His XL7 will have a happy 😁 home.
A green topology brings Ivan his green money income.
The military's solution for bleeding hydraulics on F-35 was to just get rid of the hydraulics for flight control actuators and go electric. Ok, they probably did it for other reasons, too. They then ran into another problem. As the flight control surface comes back to its neutral position, it's essentially backdriven by the air loads and acts like a generator. So they had to include large resistors to burn off the back EMF. Otherwise it would drive the electrical bus crazy. So maybe it's time for electric brakes on road vehicles. Hahaha.
Really??? Need for dissipating back EMF in a servo system has been known for as long as electric servo systems existed. The bigger the motor, the bigger the resistors.
wait 'till these eBAY sellers discover the pricing power they have
I'd expect a bad connection somewhere if it's behaving badly.
Ivan, have you thought about the Topdon Phoenix series scanners? They are fantastic.
Elwood: "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses."
Ivan: "Hit it."
Reminds me of people wearing sunglasses at parts stores. They are ready to purchase. As they get to the pin pad.
