UltimateKyuubiFox You are right! So many movies have such great fashion and costuming that _aren't_ about medieval European aristocracy, yet it feels like that is all that wins in Oscars.
UltimateKyuubiFox In the last 4 years, the costume design award has gone to The Grand Budapest Hotel, Mad Max: Fury Road, Fantastic Beasts, and Phantom Thread so the Academy is not that rigid anymore.
Vino sitas To say that they “copy” each other is silly. You know very well that they’re going for historical accuracy in those costumes. Historical accuracy is a good thing. Just because you can’t appreciate the nuances and differences among different European cultures in different countries and time periods doesn’t mean that they’re all copies. So far, Black Panther is my top contender for Best Costume Design (for the year) but let’s not resort to silliness.

I mean, hair was being worn openly, cleavage was shown, more underskirts were being worn and even substituted in order to make clothes appear even bigger. Mens fashion started to change rapidly as well. After the Renaissance there was barely a single piece of clothing that looked the same and had the same purpose it had before. If you want to call something boring, then please take a different era for it (for example most movies set in modern times). Ok, sorry for my rant. But once you look into it, European Renaissance fashion is just as interesting as traditional African clothing, you just have more stereotypes about it, bc it gets referenced a lot more.

We've seen numerous interpretations of what Queen Elizabeth wore, but never an African queen in the 21st century with advance tech. And the way Ruth Carter describes her design process, how the beads on the Dora is passed down mother to daughter, or how they 3D printed Angela Bassett's headdress. It's awe inspiring

She better win, if Suicide Squad (one of the worst movies of 2016) can win an Oscar for Best Makeup, she’s more than qualified to win costume design for Black Panther.
The winner will probably someone who designed for a period movie that looks exactly like what people wore at the time....which is boring. No one really appreciates creativity anymore, especially at the Oscars
I just realised Zuri is the only wakandan man that doesn't have a "Letter'rest of name" type of name. N'Jobu, N'Jadaka, W'Kabi, T'Challa and T'Chaka all follow that pattern.
Shao Xun Leong i assume that the shamans of wakanda don't have a letter in front? in the scene with young t'chaka and n'jobu and zuri, he said he was 'zuri, son of badu' his father badu doesn't have a letter in front either, and zuri grew up to be shaman so i assume that badu was shaman before zuri took over, probably due to retirement or death.
I am not even black and I am super proud of this film. Everything is so detailed and the culture is being continually referenced. This whole movie is on point.
First off: Ms. Carter did an amazing job with the costumes. Second: at 1:44, T'Challa has the perfict "Oh no" look on his face after Shuri says "Did he freeze?"
I imagine there's a ton of stuff she worked on that didn't even make it into the final shots of the movie. She should get a full documentary or something!
She deserves an Oscar for that headdress alone... that she made by hand. But, yes, for everything in designing for the movie. All of it is beyond amazing! Only one question: What is the inspiration behind M'Baku's tribe?
InfraMusic that’s why in Wonder Woman the amazons we’re dressed in armor that covered most of their bodies and then in justice league they were wearing mini skirts and two pieces

@@nothisispatrick5691 It's kind of a ridiculous argument. The conventional wisdom in Hollywood before BP was that movies with all black casts DON'T make much money.
The audience decides what is the best movie. Obviously black panther exceeded all other Marvel movies because more people went to see it or repeatedly went to see it then any other Marvel movie. It's not very intelligent to say that another movie is better when it didn't become the Blockbuster that black panther did. So you can say it wasn't the best movie to you and to some other people, however oh, obviously the majority of moviegoers did not agree with you mr. Or ms. Prototype.
"...with some stuff I found at the flea market"
Wow, imagine if you saw your old rugs in a superhero movie
7:26 Blanket that is both comfortable and gives you protection, the ultimate security blanket, me want.
I'm very happy Because the Dinka traditional dresses is included, that means that the country of South Sudan is present in this movie and it is really an African renaissance, Rest in peace king T'challa
This is incredible. She did such a good job. So much research and craftsmanship. It truly is a feast for the eyes.
She needs to be nominated for an Oscar next year!!
I wish she discussed the second black panther outfit in the movie

Probably because it was all cgi also in my opinion the first suit looks a lot better

Shuri's corset actually doesn't seem that uncomfortable. It should be pretty ergonomic.
sooo beautiful!! I wish she talked about the Jabari tribe costumes too tho
I know! They could've given her ten more minutes at least!
Well you have an Oscar now. Congratulations🎉🎉
That Masai headdress made me cry. Kenyan representation as well as all of Africa is LIT🇰🇪🇰🇪
Yes, and the Turkana too
Wow, you can easily tell that she did her homework and then some. Much respect.

Definitely should be up for nomination at the Academy Awards. :) Thanks, Ruth Carter and your team, for such an aesthetically pleasing film!
I was so happy to see the Amazigh of North Africa represented as well in this movie through the Touareg tribes, hopefully, next time you will go a bit further north Next to the Mediterranean Sea, cause whenever I used to say im African people would ask me why i'm white!
I'm a white African too, but I'm all the way down south!
For the record 0:14 ...He didn't "rescued" Nakia. It was an extraction mission since she was deep undercover. Awesome video though...

Thank you. I loved the detail, symbolism, and art tying it back to authentic African art.
It’s so rare to learn something about other historical costumes beside European or American. Very lovely to see “new” culture
