i was so sure of that until now. And I have probably watched this scene at least 30 times in the last 18 hours alone. (Watched the movie for the first time last night)
I thought it was a wind machine, but also that it was incredibly tacky. It took me out of the movie. That was the moment that I decided I probably wasn't going to like this movie. Then her facing the camera with that big fake grin, ugh. I thought she ruined the whole scene.
turtledove saying that she “ruined the whole scene” because of one moment that wasn’t even intentional is a bit of a stretch. And personally, i loves that moment bc it was as theatrical as everything around her
Damien said it in his behind the scenes version the dancers brought some of their cars to the shoot. And the freeway had to be shut down for 3 days, one for rehearsal and two days for shooting. And he also talked about how disappointed he was when he turned up for rehearsals because there was so much he hadn't considered in the dance. The freeway was sloped so they couldn't figure out which angle to shoot in, it messed up some of the dancers' moves, the camera wasn't as fluid as they'd hoped, and there was a heat advisory warning for the hottest day of the year. And even on the last day the sky was super cloudy so they couldn't shoot for hours (the song is called another day of sun after all they need a harsh glare to shoot) and then the dancers kept sweating out, and in the truck opening scene the handle broke and nobody could open it. I have literally no idea how they pulled off one of the best things I've seen this year. Damien said he was so unhappy and thought it would be a mess, he seriously considered even cutting this whole dance altogether because it was so hard to do.
And then everybody behind you will honk and swear at you until you get back inside and start moving again lol... if only life were as magical as La La Land (although to be fair, Sebastian did flip Mia off, so some of it was as magical as real life)
Top to bottom, this film had the perfect storm of cast and crew, location and lighting, smallest detail to the largest. Its a very rare thing, for so many things, to go just so correctly, magically even.
I totally am! I went out of the theater with mixed feelings. Sad that they didn't get together at the end but happy because such a sweet movie! I saw it twice in the theater and now bought the DVD and yes, plan to watch it many more times!
I'm actually crying by the end cuz it was just SO BEAUTIFUL! I will never look at this scene the same way. Every single little details, every movement, every angle, EVERYTHING was perfectly done and I'm so so so happy they made this happen. Damien, Mandy and every every single person involved is amazing! Absolutely genius! This is probably the best thing in the world! I remember watching this scene for the first time in theaters and I was so happy and blown away and when everybody got back into their car and shut the door and the title LA LA LAND popped up I WAS SO FREAKING EMOTIONAL AND WAS GOING TO STAND UP AND CLAP. MASTERPIECE. WHAT AN OPENING SCENE.
Absolutely, without a doubt, 100% respect for all the dancers, stunt people, director, cinematographer, choreographer, post production editors and all the rest of the crew it took to make this masterpiece. This will always be one of my all time favorite films / dance sequences. Absolutely beautiful.
gaft24 I honestly never understand why the Oscars have Sound Mixing and Sound Editing as seperate categories (they barely know the difference, the nominations were exactly the same this year) but they don't have anything for choreography or stunts.
@@lucanreynolds1341 mixing happens in set, and as a production sound guy, it is not easy. Editing, of course, is post production, a totally different set of skills. (Being on set is magical though.)
This movie is so inspiring and brilliant in so many ways...and this scene, wow! what a masterpiece. I love the joy in this dance number, and the color and all the motion and how they mixed natural with fantastic. So amazing!
Okay, so, I read that Damien Chazelle's sister was a circus performer and joked to my mother during our fourth viewing of La La Land that the hula hoop girl was her. Turns out I was right!
This is one of my favourite scenes ever, the shot where the camera pans up to see all the actors dancing in unison on the cars makes me well up with emotion
When I watched La La Land in the cinema, I got absolutely blown away by this opening song and it is still my favourite today. The scene is marvellous, epic job, well done.
La la land has been release for 6 years now and I’ve never seen it until a friend of mine encourage me to watch it. I thought it’s gonna be one of those boring movies or whatsoever but after watching it, I couldn’t stop talking about it and how magical it is! Furthermore, the soundtrack was also captivating and fabulous as well! This is truly a master piece! Love it so much!❤️
I've danced long, intricate dances in musicals, and can't begin to describe how much enjoyable it is! Months of rehearsals are so worth it when you finally get up on stage and perform. You know things so well that it's second nature and you just go out there and have fun! And you wish you could do it every day forever. ❤️
I am ALWAYS gabsmacked and starstruck whenever I see big productions like this, and with ALL of the complexities that a LA freeway brings to it (as if such a big number wasn't difficult to produce already).
Here it is Covid-19 quarantine and I'm JUST NOW watching this movie. I truly LOVED IT!!! The opening scene drew me in and I was hooked. This song is stuck in my head. Thank you for doing such an awesome job with this scene.
What an opening scene, in some respects, you could say it was one of the best scenes of the film, those colours, definitely one of the best opening scenes ever, it's addictive, the dancing in sync towards the end of this scene on the cars, wow!!!
i really didn’t know how calculated this was! this movie is so pretty and my first thought of “this movie is great” came with this number. it’s calculated to be loose yet still on the beat. i love love love these shots and how gorgeous it is! it really does feel like people are spontaneously starting to dance
One of the best, most unique and inspiring films ever made. This opening dance scene blew me away. Every moment in this film is to be savored. What an absolute visionary Damien Chazelle is. I can't wait to see his next film and hope to work with him someday.
THANK YOU SO MUCH Mandy Moore for explaining all that and taking us through that ... as a beginner filmmaker it really helps me understand what's involved and what goes into the planning of such a scene, and also the thinking behind certain choreography
Wow it's amazing how many details they have to handle. I have so much respect for all of them. The movie is so fantastic thanks to all the departments that worked in it, but sadly not many people think about it.
What a great video, I love that scene and to see it explained like this is great. Can't say I'm not a little disappointed there were two cuts hidden in there though, when I watched it I definitely thought it was a one shot deal.
Watching it in the theater I noticed the 2 cuts (only because I live in L.A. and we locals start to think like industry people) but it's not disappointing because it was done very very beautifully !!!
Wow... I totally thought her dress flying up at the end must have been a wind machine. It's so fantastic when those amazing accidents happen.
i was so sure of that until now. And I have probably watched this scene at least 30 times in the last 18 hours alone. (Watched the movie for the first time last night)
The dancer saved the moment by just continuing on without showing surprise or hesitating. Well done.
Bob Ross would be proud.
And personally, i loves that moment bc it was as theatrical as everything around her
Now I respected it more than before. So much details and thoughts went into this dance number. Such a masterpiece, indeed!
thats mandy moore for ya, always so thought out and meaningful. i miss her on sytycd but its coming back!!
Honestly I wouldn't have noticed if that guy at the end (Patrick) got into a different car. The attention to detail here is insane.
Hats off to the Choreographer for being able to assemble this 🤘
this was one of the most ambitious scenes and boy, did they pull it off! A masterpiece from beginning to end.
Max Earth omg 666 likes. nobody change it
le tardis someone did 😂

Damien said he was so unhappy and thought it would be a mess, he seriously considered even cutting this whole dance altogether because it was so hard to do.
thank god they didnt cut it bc it was without a doubt the best thing ive ever seen
planetwasabi same. It's spectacular!
does anyone else feel this scene to be so much magical than before?
I'd be terrified to be the one person who was off beat with closing the door!
Matt Hardy I can see that one door up to the far left 😬
It’s pretty much perfect though haha
Apparently one of the dancers cars locked and the door wouldn’t open so he had to jump through the car window. 😟😂
I am still searching for that door though.
Mandy needs to win some awards for this. Such hard work. Knowing how this was made makes it even more epic and impressive. Truly outstanding, really.
André Camilo she already won many awards for her choreograpy’s
That unison at the end though! So much respect for everyone working on that scene. I mean, the whole sequence too of course
It's cool how she played director for this whole scene. Also how she commends everyone involved but takes as much credit as she deserves.
"So when you stuck in traffic, you need to know what you do. Get out and dance." Best advice ever :D
Every time I'm stuck in traffic now, I definitely think of this scene and smile. :)
And then everybody behind you will honk and swear at you until you get back inside and start moving again lol... if only life were as magical as La La Land (although to be fair, Sebastian did flip Mia off, so some of it was as magical as real life)
now all i need is a nuclear powered portable bluetooth speaker so people could enjoy my dancing
Top to bottom, this film had the perfect storm of cast and crew, location and lighting, smallest detail to the largest. Its a very rare thing, for so many things, to go just so correctly, magically even.
The attention to detail is awe-inspiring!!!!!!
i love when they all shut their doors at the end , theyre all going back to reality after such a fantastical moment
I NEED her to go through all the choreographies.
Is anyone else addicted to La La Land?
HanneyBD i'm so addicted i need help
yeah wtf is that it's like i am on drugs or something
Nah Moonlight boy..
I totally am! I went out of the theater with mixed feelings. Sad that they didn't get together at the end but happy because such a sweet movie! I saw it twice in the theater and now bought the DVD and yes, plan to watch it many more times!
HanneyBD Me. I've seen it 11 times now. I can't stop! lol
So much thought in this scene .... it's incredible
This whole scene made the movie for me. What a masterpiece!
Stanley Kuo I know right?!
Stanley Kuo
Well, it's the first scene, so you must've been pretty impressed early on aha
I'm actually crying by the end cuz it was just SO BEAUTIFUL! I will never look at this scene the same way. Every single little details, every movement, every angle, EVERYTHING was perfectly done and I'm so so so happy they made this happen. Damien, Mandy and every every single person involved is amazing! Marina Li yes, totally! I was about to clap as well because I had completely forgotten that I was in a theatre... The scene felt so... LIVE
Absolutely, without a doubt, 100% respect for all the dancers, stunt people, director, cinematographer, choreographer, post production editors and all the rest of the crew it took to make this masterpiece. This will always be one of my all time favorite films / dance sequences. Absolutely beautiful.
there's so much passion and thought behind it, a true masterpiece!
That scene alone should have gotten them the best picture oscar I think 😁
This lady deserved an Oscar more than anyone in the movie ❤️ Amazing work
gaft24
I honestly never understand why the Oscars have Sound Mixing and Sound Editing as seperate categories (they barely know the difference, the nominations were exactly the same this year) but they don't have anything for choreography or stunts.
Especially when they were going to have 'Best Popular Film'.
@@lucanreynolds1341 mixing happens in set, and as a production sound guy, it is not easy. Editing, of course, is post production, a totally different set of skills. (Being on set is magical though.)
J.J. Abrams' favourite part in the whole scene was the lens flare!
This movie is so inspiring and brilliant in so many ways...and this scene, wow! what a masterpiece. I love the joy in this dance number, and the color and all the motion and how they mixed natural with fantastic. So amazing!
Amazing scene. Thank you Damian, Mandy and the man himself.
Ludacris.
Why am i crying watching this
Riza V. Me, too. Me, too. It's how I feel about the whole movie, like it's too much beauty to contain without releasing some tears. It's overwhelming!
Riza V. omg I thought I was just an emotional wreck or something. I felt so amazed I started tearing up.
Probably because you're a woman.
KEEP CALM and PLAY SOCCER IN YOUR PAJAMAS wow sexist.
SAME HERE
Not the Mandy Moore I expected
Correct! See my own post above!!
Ellen Coonan The other Mandy Moore was a terrible dancer, she said in Jimmy Fallon's interview
Same.
Mandy Moore repunzul ?
but the one we needed
"here comes the spin... YEEEES!!" such a dork, amazing!
Okay, so, I read that Damien Chazelle's sister was a circus performer and joked to my mother during our fourth viewing of La La Land that the hula hoop girl was her. Turns out I was right!
Give this lady an award, seriously
This is insane. The fact that it's "one shot" with so many components in such a small space while also being so in sync with the music.
holy crap is that scene complex....
This is one of my favourite scenes ever, the shot where the camera pans up to see all the actors dancing in unison on the cars makes me well up with emotion
She is a genius by just creating this choreography, my respect for her 👏👏 she was a key element for La La Land, one of my favorite movies
This is the content i am interested in!!
When I watched La La Land in the cinema, I got absolutely blown away by this opening song and it is still my favourite today.
The scene is marvellous, epic job, well done.
You just know why la la land is such an outstanding masterpiece after so much thought in everything.
still one of the best scene i've seen in years. i love this movie.
This is one of my most favorite scenes from any movies. I just love the magic that radiates from it.
Brilliant. No other way to put it. This was just incredibly stunning and iconic.
this is so beautiful I'm literally crying
La la land has been release for 6 years now and I’ve never seen it until a friend of mine encourage me to watch it. Cheer up 2023 watching this stunning, imaginative, moving, charming, life affirmative, glorious film! And sod the so-called “Government”!
This about my fourth time watching and I never get tired...😂This scene is so beautifully orchestrated, it's so satisfying to see how it was done.
I think this is my favourite breakdown because she brings so much genuine enthusiasm and gives so much credit to others. Awesome.
this is definitely the coolest thing i've ever seen! i have so much respect for everyone involved in the making of la la land
I've danced long, intricate dances in musicals, and can't begin to describe how much enjoyable it is! Months of rehearsals are so worth it when you finally get up on stage and perform. Oh, such an awesome, truly awesome, piece of work. Kudos to Mandy and all her hard-working dancers.
This woman is a genius ! Well done. That scene just makes me happy every time I see it and it never gets old !
i knew of course there was a lot of work in that section, but DAAAAAAAAAAAAMN it's so complex it blows my mind!
Here it is Covid-19 quarantine and I'm JUST NOW watching this movie. I truly LOVED IT!!! The opening scene drew me in and I was hooked. This song is stuck in my head. Thank you for doing such an awesome job with this scene.
always wondered how this scene could have been pulled off SO INCREDIBLY, loved this video especially the explanation of the dance circle
This film's choreography deserved an Oscar, if there was a category for it (as it should be)!
There have been special awards for it in certain years (and there should have been for this).
Hands down one of the best scenes of the movie and rightly so. Wow! So much more admiration for this song now.
I would love it even if you did more of the la la land breakdown!
What an opening scene, in some respects, you could say it was one of the best scenes of the film, those colours, definitely one of the best opening scenes ever, it's addictive, the dancing in sync towards the end of this scene on the cars, wow!!!
This is wild!! Even more impressed than when i first saw it
I just love the color cordination every person that passes next to another person, their color outfit compliments one another.
Awesome. One of the most enjoyable choreographic sequences I have ever seen. It brings me such joy.
that was amazing, the attention to detail is what makes this movie so great
Such respect to the people behind these production numbers!
i really didn’t know how calculated this was! this movie is so pretty and my first thought of “this movie is great” came with this number. it’s calculated to be loose yet still on the beat. i love love love these shots and how gorgeous it is! it really does feel like people are spontaneously starting to dance
I knew a lot had to go into this but actually hearing her explain everything makes me respect this shot so much more. Even more than I already did
When I watched this scene for the first time I burst into tears! So many emotions and so many feelings at once!
I teared up watching this. Just so much talent in every inch of the screen.
AMAZING!! So much thought and effort put into this one scene. Hands down the best movie !
This is absolutely amazing. Choreography is second to none. Love this movie so much I watched it 4 times. ❤️
I appreciate this scene so much more hearing all the planning and directing that went into it
This makes me admire all the cast and crew even more! Love the fact that they all thought out all the details very carefully💗
i knew that i liked this scene so much for a good reason. it always made me so happy and the production behind this scene is crazy!
I have a whole new respect for everybody involved
MANDY MOORE IS AMAZING. BEEN A FAN OF HERS SINCE I FIRST WAS INTRODUCED TO HER ON SYTYCD AND I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING HER CAREER SINCE THEN
Freeway filled with dreamers, hopeful that they'll make it big.
One of the best, most unique and inspiring films ever made. This opening dance scene blew me away. Every moment in this film is to be savored. What an absolute visionary Damien Chazelle is. I can't wait to see his next film and hope to work with him someday.
She's really cool in breaking down her challenging job and crazy talented too.
This video was a delight to watch. It made me fall in love with the scene even more
HONESTLY ICONIC WORK
No lie this scene made me cry for how beautifully done it was
So cool how they pulled this off, one of the things I keep coming back to in this movie
30 dancers? God damn I thought there's at minimum 60, great camera work, mad respect for everyone involved in this scene, it's something to behold
This is my fav scene from the movie, seeing this vid about the thinking process makes me so satisfied and love the scene even more
I absolutely adore this film. I saw it 7 times in the theater.
making movies is fucking hard
You have no idea.
she did a wonderful job !!!😍😍
Thanks for making this so memorable, each and every effort is visible in that dance...
Respect
THANK YOU SO MUCH Mandy Moore for explaining all that and taking us through that ... as a beginner filmmaker it really helps me understand what's involved and what goes into the planning of such a scene, and also the thinking behind certain choreography
Mandy you've hit a home run in the World series with this choreography , Brilliant and very entertaining
Wow. So much respect
She is telling the truth of where they cut, and where supposed to be continuos shot. See? When you tell the truth you gained more respect.
i cried during this scene in the movie
This will remain an iconic opening scene forever!!!
That is extraordinary. Many congratulations on this fantastic scene!
Wow it's amazing how many details they have to handle. I have so much respect for all of them. The movie is so fantastic thanks to all the departments that worked in it, but sadly not many people think about it.
This makes the scene so much better!
It's amazing how much effort is in a scene!
I was so excited when i first spotted Jillian. such a talented woman. the whole production was fantastic!
I always get goosebumps on that scene
She's a genius! Great scene !
this all in single shot?! unbelievable. i respect this scene more than ever. 😍😍😍
They used both a crane and a steadicam operator, so there HAD to be at least one cut. Still, this is utterly fantastic.
A beautiful scene and a beautiful song.
