dangit youtube you make this look like a sega cd video
I always felt the Ultra TMNT game is one of those titles that could've used a modern remake.
I had a C64 when everyone else had a nintendo . You don't know the struggle.
I can imagine, we thought blowing inside the cartridge to make it work was a struggle.
Where do you live? Most European C64 owners were more than happy with their choice of machine.
Yep that was me as well. And I still have my original C64 from the early 80's. Lol
"choice" of machine
the c64 is better it is capable of better graphics and sound and floppy disks held more memory
We learned patience in the UK since almost no one had a disk drive and had to sit there waiting for cassettes to load.
I always wondered how that felt like
Well try to record sound files whole night from radio to casette just to play some stupid demo game :D
Some games took 3 minutes, some took 15 minutes just to get to the title screen, and then another load for every level. To be honest cassette games were very cheap. It's not all bad.
andyukmonkey it was fun when you didn't know better. It's hard to understand know how patient you had to be just to play a game.
Well, to be honest we had an Atari 2600 too. Waiting for cassettes still didn't bother me. Although they were more likely to not work.
James doesn't know the difference between quotation marks and parentheses.
My childhood has permanently burned L.O.A.D. Shift+2 * Shift+2 comma 8 comma 1 Return and S.Y.S. 4 9 1 5 2 into my brain. It's probably visible on an MRI.
It's not a console, it's a computer.
Because saying that black women are in fact men is a thing totally not-racist people do all the time. Riiight.
I think it's a joke on her arms
"They use this brown paper so it can't be easily photocopied, so you can't make copies to pass around to people." Because we live in a world where handwriting doesn't exist.
Yes, but you had to be really determined to manually copy the thousands of numbers in small print in that sheet of paper
OMA2k exactly, at least it's not easy.
Determined ^^ Probably 2-3 hours of work.
people that are in the c64 community don't say the games are hard to load it's easy to load as long as the disk is in good shape and you can get an sd reader to make it easier
Loading games is mostly passive lol
There's a C64 "community?" Lol. My family had one in the late 80's before we got a Nintendo. Can I join the community???
any classic systems have a community; DOS PCs, PC Engines (the Turbografx 16), Apple II, C64/Spectrums...
Just look online for forums and communities.
Exactly! I have a feeling the only reason he said it's "tough to get it to work" is because the C64 is very old and disks don't keep as well as cartridges. I'd hope that's what he meant anyway. That computer was an amazing beast!
joe m How is it that you know such things? Absolutely amazing!
He keeps calling quotations parenthesis...
Load (*(,8,1 is a lot different than Load "*",8,1
I've never had issues with games being hard to work. Commador was my fav thing in the world. You just need patience
James and Mike....Mike and James....play back your UA-cam videos at 0.5 speed and you guys will crack up. It's amazingly fun!
Your C64 is fucked up. Get it fixed and you won't have those problems
Thank you for the warm fuzzy on the C-64. I'm figuring out how to use my smart phone as a C-64 and pair it with a joystick.
You dont need encryption you just need a brown piece of paper - lol
The keyboard problem is likely due to the joystick contacts needing cleaning or bending. Contacts that shouldnt be shorting are shorting. Which also explains why he is jumping when he is pushing the button, instead of jumping by pressing up.
God, looking at the smaller light blue box brings back all the memories....my friend had a C64......loved this game so much, I got it on the NES, and then in the E-shop on the Wii....before they took it down for whatever reason, still have that download though! Only ever made the Airport.....this game was/is damn hard....nut the nostalgia and gameplay keeps bringing me back.....every now & again. Have a ton of games like that though. Currently, I've been playing Zelda-Breath of the Wild........can't put the controller down.....the Turtles were the business......as was the 1980s/90s for everything in Popular culture. They are just constantly re-releasing everything I grew up with cos they can't top that time period.....seemingly
For what it's worth, the tape version that he tried to load is the same as the disk one, albeit an American release retaining the "Ninja" of the title.
the funny thing is that they really don't know how to use a Commodore, and they talk like the C64 is an inferior machine to the NES...
also his C64 must have some problems with the CIA's (keyboard acts wierd when joystick are plugged), and they hotswap joysticks, never a good idea..
Also plugging a Genesis controller into a C64 isn't a good idea. Same reason they say not to plug it into a Master System. The Genesis controller expects an interpreter chip to be there, while the C64 and master system just read 1 to 1 signals from the pins. So it could result in some funky voltages going to your CIA. It wouldn't blow it in one use, but long term it's going to put a strain on the hardware. If you can get a Master System controller though that should work. There's also adapters available, and of course Atari joysticks work just fine.
I had Contra. It actually had fire and jump buttons.
Plugging a Genesis controller into a C64 is a good way to fry the C64.
I had Commodore Amiga 500 back then and I loved paying first TMNT game on it.
Didn’t realize he was taking us back to VHS.
Little explanation for playing games from disk. It seems awkward. but as old pcs did, c64 also had its dos and related commands. What you basically do is
* means first file on the disk
,8 means load from drive 8 (first disk drive plugged, 2nd is 9)
,1 means initialize drive before loading
National Lampoon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles European Vacation!
I had a c64. Never had a problem getting the games to load. Good games too
Dispite having to use an emulator to play these games, my favourite C64 game is Monty On The Run
I had a c64 and it NEVER worked right!
Bruce Lee, jump man, pitstop were my favorites. Mine died in late 90s but still use the monitor for some duck hunt!
Mine always booted just fine except for a few games and they were ALWAYS bootlegs.
the issue nowadays is the disks. those old floppies don't age well.
"Never use your phone camera to film a video, the quality is shit."
Oldschool phone cameras, neat memory.
The video quality is shit because I used Hypercam, which sucks now.
"Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles" - this is the European version of the Turtles, as the "Ninja" part had to be changed for release in Europe. On a positive note, the computer cassettes I've used tend to last far longer than 5.25" diskettes, as they're less bendable and sensitive to temperature changes. They also don't have that oval-shaped area you're never supposed to touch, which the 5.25" disks were notorious for. Thank God I know how to safely clean those areas now; I certainly didn't know back in the day.
"Comma one, comma eight, UGH!"
You get your down DOWN! You thrust your pelvis, UGH! You thrust your pelvis, UGH! You thrust your pelvis, UGH!
Easy to load tape games - just type load and press return! - or you could hold shift then press run/stop.
The memory also has to be cleared before trying to load another game (out of memory error ) just power the c64 down for at least 30 seconds.
Love the vids and the c64!!!!
"Why would you want to copy it?" Ever hear of a thing called bootlegging Mike?
How has there not been an avgn commodore episode?
The good old Commodore 64 was perhaps the easiest to use Computer back then....
I think I had the Second TMNT game for our PC. It was just a coloring book game. It was really great at the end of the computer's life when colors wouldn't be what you picked. It was even better when my mom left the monitor on for like almost 2 days, in a small room with little ventilation. The screen was pink for a very long time.
A few things that I hope can help. You don't need the 1 at the end to load a floppy. Just Load"*",8 will do. When loading from tape you just press shift and run at the same time, then hit play on the tape. Hit the C= button when found comes up to finish loading. If you get a bad load you can rewind and try again, but your tape deck may need cleaning, or a head aligning. There are head aligning programs available on both floppy and cartridge, or are also up for download if you have something like an SD2IEC
Something is wrong with your C64. You may have a blown chip if having a joystick plugged in is interfering with your keyboard. That's not normal behavior. There are services for repairing, recapping, and even rechipping old C64s to get them back into new condition.
It also doesn't hurt to take a multimeter to the pins of your power supply every so often. The bottom two pins should put out between 5 and 5.2v DC. If it creeps to near 5.5 or higher you should stop using it immediately. Those old power bricks can fry your machine with overvoltage. The top pins should put out 9v ac, but the AC part is pretty reliable. You can get adapters to protect your C64 that will shut it off if the voltage goes too high, or a lot of people make new power supplies, though those are a bit expensive.
I owned Contra, as he mentioned, for the C64. The way they set it up was that the main game controller button fired, and the button on the second controller jumped. I had a C64 controller rewired to do that with an extra button added.
But yes, the lack of buttons on the controller was one of the biggest weakness of the C64 late in its life. It's a shame they didn't develop newer games with the extra inputs of the second controller (U,D,L,R,fire) and a special controller to take advantage of it.
He messed up because he put the tape in and pressed play
By the time he was done feigning how difficult a unit it was to use, it wouldve gone past the point where it will find the game title.
Theres a reason it says 'press play on tape' after you type LOAD
Lol now this is throwback for real!
Im curious if an atari 7800 controller would work better.
You gotta buy that 2MB RAM upgrade to get the cassette deck to work.
My brain just suffered a syntax error.
I had a commodore 64 with CASSETTE reader in my childhood, and I become religious just for having games loaded properly.
I had a Commodore Plus/4 as a kid and there were many games for the 64 that I could get to work on it just by changing some of the hex codes. I wonder if this game would have worked on it. Also I remember having a Commodore printer, but it wasn't dot matrix, I think it's called daisy wheel and it was hardcore. You could change out the wheel for different fonts, like script.
Own the Commdore 64 TMNT from back in the day on cassette and still do in storage. Don't recall the loading an issue - well no more than other tape based games. However, difficulty setting this version....very unfair.
I'm watching this because the Commodore 64 mini was just announced lol
Interesting video, but why did they decide to record it using an Audiovox PM8920.
remember 480p video cameras?
James and Mike filmed this on brown paper so that if anyone ripped a copy for their own channel it would look and sound like shit. True story.
This could've been a great episode
I remember when it would say press play on tape and I’d say uh It’s on a disc. I don’t have a tape player
James is awesome. Mike gets on my damn nerves
The only thing that bothers me about these guys is their negative stigma against emulators. Like, sorry the average person doesn't have access to entire libraries of physical media. But what I mean is that they just assume that everyone/anyone who uses an emulator is only using to cheat at the games...Not because we want to relive nostalgic moments of childhood or anything without having to spend thousands of dollars on working consoles/games.
DH-81 Mike gets on my nerves because he starts joking about the same thing for too long or takes it to a stupid level. Like when he said you should have to input the code on Wii before you access the game, like...why?
He also tries too hard and really kisses James ass.
He's not that funny. I know a lot of people like him so I usually just don't watch the video's he is in but it's harder to find videos without him. I just don't like how he interrupts people and his annoying-ass shrieking laugh.
thats why hes behind the scenes and James is the star. there would be no AVGN without Mike though
Fire button to attack; Up to jump. I have no idea how James is making this seem complicated.
djpheeze maybe it's because I grew up with a commodore 64 computer, but it's frustrating watching them fumble around trying to use the computer. How does he own all that commodore 64 stuff but don't know how to use it? Why is he confused about needing a controller to play a game? Is his C64 mostly just a decoration piece?
James is more of a collector than a gamer. Especially when it comes to old computers.
He's an Atari/NES gamer, anything else scares him.
Also, as he mentioned in one episode, he sometimes do that on purpose, its his "angry nerd" character, being overly angry and exaggerate things ;)
He hasn't done anything like that since the third AVGN episode... That was the only one where he played purposefully bad.
Incredible. Make a special of the commodore amiga!!.
Ty for this upload u got any other vids of non uploaded Cinemascre vids
????
I got a few more here:

Thank you
Shift, back in the day of electric typewriters and Commodore 64, was sort of saying "anti" or "opposite of"... so anti-down would be up or d would be D
In Amstrad cpc you have to write cat, then run"*.
There are people that claims that plugging a genesis controller into commodore 64 could fry an inner chip (can't remember which one). The reason should be the other buttons that have no use (since c64 was intended to have just one button for the games) Maybe this is the reason because some of the keys dont' work with the controller plugged in.
Was the video shot by the commodore 64? It looks pretty bad and is very delayed.
Was Sword Quest ever released on the old C64?
Just get a Fast Load Cartridge. Just hit the Commodore button and Run_Stop button and the disk games load, and they load up to 5 times faster.
In the UK (at the time) it was know as Hero, not ninja Turtles. This is because the Bristish censors (the BBFC) had a bee in there bonnet about anything to do with ninjas. Another example of this is Ninja Gaiden getting renamed Shadow Warriors in the UK.
Matthew Hauxwell what caused them to be such pussies when it comes to ninjas? Was there a specific reason
I think they thought kids might pretend to be ninjas and start beating each other up. Though they let kids watch wrestling, which is still two people beating each other up, but they did not seem to mind that.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles#Teenage_Mutant_.22Hero.22_Turtles
There was also Shadow of the Ninja that was renamed to Blue Shadow
All of Europe I believe, everything was "Hero Turtles" here in Sweden too until the '00s reboot.
I beat Double Dragon on the Commodore 64. The load times were close to two minutes.
I hope James realizes that disks lose their information over time. In 100 years, all those disks will be unreadable.
Even worse was the PC version which ran at about 2 fps. It was nightmare inducing.
Ah, you console afficionados... you're all so used to just plugging stuff in and expecting it to just work! The C64 wasn't a gaming console, it was a computer and, considering it was designed at the back end of the 1970s (about the same time as the Atari 2600, IIRC) it was pretty damn good at gaming despite not being the reason for it's existence.
Loading a game (or anything else) required you to tell the computer where to load from. You could type LOAD (or hold down SHIFT and press RUN/STOP), but this would default to loading from cassette - something most C64 owners had to do since the floppy disk drive was an expensive add-on.
Because the C64 used disk, or tape, it was possible to copy games very easily (especially with tapes), either by a straight copy or using one of the many game copying cartridges that were available. So using the manual to act as a copy protection method was commonplace. Not something you cartridge jockeys would ever have been exposed to, I guess. The brown paper here meant photocopying was pointless, as the brown would come out black. Other games used colour block codes, or referenced words on a specific page on the manual, all of which required a lot of hard work hand copying them or a lot of money for photocopying.
Also, never, ever use the Commodore joystick, it was crap. Get a Competition Pro stick, those were the business.
you should update your c= hardware to 2017!
At 2:01 it stops every time and tells me "no connection (playback id: JkpB7RTNJ9cawO-) tap to retry"
works fine for me
Still doing the same thing for me. I don't know what's going on.
I miss my commodore
RaceToNowhere i miss my commodore too.
And me
I never had issues like he has. What he has is a busted machine.
I rebember the Commodore it was like biplorar half the time but I had a lot of games for it I regret giving it away
Audio? gets? out of? sync?
For the TMNT World disk, maybe try doing the list command of the disk. Then do the load command of the game but in quotes.
Never knew that there was a TMNT game on the C64.
Ok, here is the disk directory command,
LOAD "$",8
That should give you the floppy' directory. Then could find the name of the game file and load & run it.
LOAD "example",8,1
I had the small blue box one on Amstrad 464. It was easier than the NES version
The nes Turtles version is one of my fav nes games. It wasn't hard for me at all. You just have to grind for like 20 mins to get 99 scrolls for each turtle and then the game will be cake.
It's not the c64 which is a problem here gentlemen. I still have my c64 and it works in perfect order.
Why is the quality so crappy? This is like old UA-cam...
I think your comador doesn't work
They look and sound drunk.... or maybe it's just bad quality
Maybe next time use a tri pod
Dear Nerd,
I know you are Angry Nintendo Nerd but..
It would be awesome if you reviewed the best fucking titles from C64 !!!!!!!!
Greetings from Poland!
Rejdz Egenst Now, he’s the Angry Video Game Nerd.
Marcus Walker so I still waiting for C64 games!
It's nice that you posted it here, but can't you find a better quality? This is a very, very low quality rip and I'd love to see it in a better shape than this
I'll see what I can do
I never had issues loading games or with my keyboard not working when a controller was plugged in. James's C64 must be a piece of shit
Who the fuck calls a quotation mark a parenthesis??
WTF was this recorded on a hot dog bun
LOAD,"$",8 RETURN
GulfCoastSportsLLC Directory listing!
Tails64DS NT Channel I remember having to type this in to play any floppy put into the drive. Some of the shit I can remember ... I swear! lol.
Send it to Techmoan!
Looks like he could have damaged the CIA chip by plugging in the Genesis pad; it's wired in a way that causes a short on the C64. This is why only some keys worked, possibly also why the first game controlled oddly.
www.c64-wiki.com/wiki/CIA
doesn't load at all
wait
"you don't need encryption you just need a brown piece of paper." Uhhh mike, that grid IS a type of encryption.
Is Mike really that thick or is he just creating cues for James to explain about stuff? "Why would anyone want to copy it." Face palm
stoltobot they do that all the time. Apparently they have no problem making themselves look fucking stupid for the sake of “explanation”
I honestly thought that Mike was saying that as a joke, as in "why would anyone want to copy it in the first place";
and that James took it as an opportunity to tell some anecdotes...
avgn movie lied they said the black kid recorded all his vids not mfm
your right! XD
Black child was playing the role of mfm
Mike Matei the dingle berry, It's just a guy that somehow work with the AVGN, unlike the nerd he suck at reviewing games.
whent he joke zooms by
Teenage mutant hero turtles
COMMA 8 COMMA 1 UHHHH
never use an genesis gamepad on an c64.....they are wired diffrently...you might blow up your c64.....look it up..
Hackfressenmesserman yo : Well, his C64 seemed to work fine after plugging, and the controller actually worked with the game! How could that work if they were wired differently?
Thanks for the explanation.
randy s wait they called it a cia chip? Edward Snowden eat your heart out.
randy s Yeah thats what they want you to think. Jk
Charlie Brown LOL
RTFM, Nerd!
The nes version was superior in so many ways!
Having had the PAL version the music in this NTSC version sounds like techno or trance music
Way to fast at 60HZ
Spoils my nostalgia for TMHT oh yeh we got HERO turtles not NINJA
Never thought I'd dislike a Cinemasacre video ever, but boys... Computers simply aren't for you. Save them for skilled users while you do the consoles where you excell!

One of the worst games on the NES.
