Definitely would be good to see. I’m getting sick of having to ask every GameStop to show me what their retro selection is. Can’t wait to see what all the stores end up doing with their retro games once they start getting more in. There’s a reason why they don’t sell very well in the store because most people don’t know they exist. My local store has three PS Vita games sitting in the drawer because nobody knows that they are there besides me and the employees. I have all three of them already so I don’t need them. The only plus side to them having them in the drawers is that a lot of times I find things that other people don’t know about. So I guess it’s a give-and-take.

Yeah, I was amazed to see all of the games that I picked up for a penny not too long ago, going back into their system. That’s where their business model is flawed. This is the only way they stay relevant in the future is if they can find a way to make physical games their main priority.
They need to give the employees the tools to take the cartridges apart to look at the insides. It’s very easy to spot a fake if you open them up. But I think you’re right, they will just not really care about what they’re taking in for the most part.

@@coffeeismyvice The thing I always tell people is weigh your options. Every town I have ever lived in had GameStop and at least one other local store. I always shopped around to see who offered the most in trade. The only time I ever traded a system to GameStop was an XBOX One S, and I only did it because it was during a promo where they offered $50 bonus. Ended up getting the same amount I originally bought it for a year or so earlier back in trade in the deal...
Diddy Kong Racing for N64 has the right stock photo but the wrong description for it. The description is for the DS version. It even mentions online play which the N64 original did not have. C'mon, GameStop!
The problem with this is there is no one to train the employees. I’m one of only 6 employees in all of STL to have been with the company more than 10 years, & the vast majority of employees at the store level, & even at corporate, have been with the company for 3 years or less.
That’s definitely going to be an issue when it comes to employees figuring out if some of these games are real or not. When it comes to the cartridge stuff, I can see a bunch of fakes being traded in on more expensive titles.
They do this on and off all the time. They'll do a retro gaming section a year maybe 2 years. Remove the section then start doing it again a couple years later.
It’ll be interesting to see what they end up doing with this. This would be a nice way to help them get back into profitability if they can do it right. They’re never going to survive with modern games going digital.
The problem is that when buying something used from Gamestop, you really have no idea what you're getting since they don't show pictures of the actual game, case, inserts, etc that you get.
I recently went to a Gamestop and I saw that they had Nightmare Creatures for the N64 for a reasonable $30. Would have gotten it, but I don't have an N64 unfortunately.
Yeah, it seems like I always run across a random one here and there. It would be nice to see them actually having a good stock of retro stuff available again.
@@CincyGameHunting Same here. I actually remember years ago seeing a copy of Zelda Link's Awakening for the Gameboy at a Gamestop. I don't remember how much it was, but I really wanted it because I like the Zelda games a lot.
GameStop employee here! Yeah this is happening, but unfortunately those rare games will never make it to shelves at the stores. My managers put all those rare games we get in stock at the store and they buy them at the store price themselves and resell em on eBay and I know atleast of 2 other stores in my area that do that same exact thing. It's sad.
I went to a new GameStop a week ago and I asked to see retro games, they had a small area and I said oh that's all and the employee said we'll be taking in a lot more retro games in June. I thought that was an interesting comment.
As long as they advertise it. If nobody knows that they can trade in retro games, nobody’s going to bring anything in and it basically is a worthless idea. They need to put ads all over every store to promote it.
Yeah, it’s always a bummer that Canada seems to always have different deals than the US stores. One thing I did notice a while back that was Canada did happen to have a lot more PS Vita games on their site for a while, when the US website stopped having hardly any of them at all.
yea I noticed it a few months ago and was able to snag some n64, snes, ds, ps1, ps2 games when they were selling them for well under market value for awhile
Unfortunately, with them changing the prices on the retro games finally it might get harder and harder to find good deals. The one thing I have noticed though is that if a game is worth over $100 they still seem to not market more than $99. Maybe that’s their cap for most games
@@CincyGameHunting @Cincy Game Hunting for awhile they had Daytona USA Champship Circuit edition for the Sega Saturn for $150, but they dropped it to $99.99 about a month ago... so yea it seems like $99.99 is where they're going to max out in terms of price for now on retro games
Doesn’t surprise me they are going retro, they’ve lost a lot profit in the last few years. It’s actually smart since they have still have a massive chain of stores
I agree, I think the one thing that will save the other retro stores is that I don’t think that GameStop is going to be selling retro consoles themselves, just the games. At least for now.
Holy crap they really raised the price on Windwaker… I got really lucky and found a CIB copy at my local GameStop back in April for $20 (first time I’ve seen a single GC game in store in YEARS). Now the price is 3X
If they're going to start selling these games at or closer to market value, they need some better quality control than before. Train people to recognize bootlet games better, let you know whether or not you're getting disc only or complete, etc.
That’s the one thing that I’m curious about. If they’re going to take in cartridges, they’re going to need to give their employees tools to double check the cartridges. Otherwise they’re just going to lose money over fake games.
Definitely. It’s amazing how nobody has realized until now that you might want to get back into the things that made you money back in the day. Use games is how they were super successful in the 90s and early 2000s. Then they decided they weren’t going to carry the older stuff anymore and the newer stuff is all available digitally. Whoops…
I went to gamestop in Morgantown a few weeks ago and they had 2 n64 and 2 snes in store in the ds case. Employees said they could do retro trade ins and keep them for a month before going to the warehouse. Prices were high
Yeah, like I said, a lot of prices look like they have been adjusted recently with the move to taking in retro games in trade. I’m curious to see how many things populate on the website and how many things show up in store. If they don’t advertise that they taken in Retro Trade, they’re never going to get anything in. It’s been too long and people stopped ringing that stuff in because of it.
I can’t see them charging price charting prices for some of these games. There’s a reason why you can still buy Godzilla on PS4 for like $69 if you can find it at a store. They do tend to cap their prices for the most part at around $100. I’ve only seen a few outliers in the past. Only time will tell…
Looks like vice city stories on PS2 and crash bandicoot on PS one are the only ones in stock on the website right now. Remember they just started taking trade-ins so they’re probably not gonna populate a lot of stuff right away.
They really need to start advertising that they are taking in older games. It’s hard to get people to trade things if all the employees are still claiming that they don’t take old ass because they don’t know any better. It feels like I’m always education employees on their own deals.
I usually do. But it is nice to catch GameStop slipping on certain things. I was really able to build my vita and Wii U collection with them undervaluing a lot of stuff. But for the most part, I usually just go to my local shops.
So im really cool with some of the managers at gamestop and they did mention that supposedly they are gonna bring back retro games and have a whole retro section in stores. Now i dont know if its true but looking at this it seems more likely it is gonna happen. Also I remember buying wind waker hd from gamestop for 20 lol. Its been like a couple years but still its insane the prices.
I was amazed at the amount of retro cartridge games that were populating on the website. Wanted to make sure everybody was aware of it, so when they started to show up as in stock, that people could be ready. Somebody else actually messaged me the other day saying that they had talked to somebody at their store and they confirmed that they are taking more games in on trade.
@@CincyGameHunting oh wow! Thats insane, well if gamestop does start selling these retro games more often and at cheaper prices, that might influence the market a bit. Making everything a bit cheaper but probably not. Who knows lol
The problem is they can't keep the games in stock. The people that work at GameStop are usually gamers who buy that stuff as soon as it comes in. I worked there a couple months and people would bring in n64 games and other retro games and they were all bought by 1 employe. He wouldn't let any of the other employees buy them. He also grabbed anything rare or uncommon. He was spending hundreds every shift he worked. Idk how he paid rent
@@megami215 so i talk with gamestop managers all the time, and from what they told me is they cant have first dibs or anything thats brought it. It took me a bit after the shock of knowing GameStop has a ton of retro game listings to comment. Now that I'm doing better (haha) it makes me wonder if GameStop is doing this just to save their brand. It makes sense because every time I have gone in their stores I get depressed because to me it's a shell of what it used to be. I will be shocked if having retro games for trade and also sell in the stores will catch on. If it doesn't, then the damage done to the GameStop brand may be irreparable. Currently we do not have a Pro membership, but I would consider it if they have a ton of retro games in the store and online which I would be happy with cartridge only since their "new" and "preowned" disc game and Switch games may or may not be CIB.
Only bummer is I think they’re raising the price for the pro membership by $10. So it’ll be $25 for the year. I think the only thing they’re really adding to the membership it’s 5% off purchases.
Yes, they are raising the price to $25 which is at the end of this month. It’s the same price as being a member of Barnes & Noble which doesn’t seem like a good price either for GameStop. I would have to think long and hard to believe if this is a good value.
GameStop has been doing this off and on since around 2015. They will ramp up Retro, then slow the program down, only to ramp it back up slowly. I keep an eye on their site, and it seems like they wait until they have a decent amount of trade-ins, and then update prices on the site, and upload the stock.
They really need to jump back into this full on. This is what made them money back in the day. With all the games going digital now this needs to be their bread and butter.

They’re pretty much unavailable for everyone right now. I think this is fairly new, and there have not been a bunch of trade-ins yet. The main idea of this video is to let people know to keep an eye out for when they start to show up online and in stores in the near future. Once people realize that they can actually trade the stuff in again, there will be more retro stuff in stock.
I figured GameStop would do this but I feel like it’s too late because the whole retro collection fiasco is very slowly dying off IMO. Also I thought you were going to talk about the pro membership changes. Seems like a step down, the 5$ Coupon is getting more restricted than before.

They see dk oldies selling all them retro games for crazy prices and there like hold up we need to get in on this and increase our prices I knew this was coming the gaming market will change a lot in the next coming months be ready ppl
I’m shocked that they haven’t jumped on the Retro Video game bandwagon before now. They should’ve been taking older games all this time, especially when digital games start to become more dominant in the modern gaming consoles.
I tried selling them a PS1, with some games, and a couple N64 games, and they were only planning to give me 63 bucks.
@@coffeeismyvice see that just robbery lol 😆 😂
@@mjj8560 I started to regret buying an N64 console from them in 2019. Only spent $100. Two minor flaws and that was it. They charge more for everything now. No wonder people turn to emulators.
I'll never forget how GameStop lowballed my brother when he traded in his GameCube console and games in 2011. He was expecting to get several games for the XBOX 360, but he was only able to get one game 😑.
Detective Cincy on the case!! (no pun intended) Great finds bro!
Diddy Kong Racing for N64 has the right stock photo but the wrong description for it. The description is for the DS version. It even mentions online play which the N64 original did not have. C'mon, GameStop!
i don't think anyone is gonna trade retro stuff into gamestop and they will eventually just pull it all off the website
They might if GameStop actually advertised it, but knowing them they’ll probably drop the ball and not do that at all
@@CincyGameHunting this is just a ploy from gamestop to be able to justify getting out of retro all together
Honestly surprised there are 6 of you in this area that have been there that long. Which location are you at?
@@retrogamerescue Fenton
Everyone has Zelda fever so the prices are up.
I'd get Golden Sun if I were you. Unless it drops in price after hitting the NSO. Wonder if the Pokemon games will?
Fingers crossed
The problem is that when buying something used from Gamestop, you really have no idea what you're getting since they don't show pictures of the actual game, case, inserts, etc that you get.
If I buy from GameStop online, I always make sure that the lose price of a game is what I am paying for. If it comes in complete, it’s a bonus.
I actually picked up super Mario land on game boy at a local GameStop back when they had their last buy two get two free sale
It's sad.
Definitely a bummer
I went to a new GameStop a week ago and I asked to see retro games, they had a small area and I said oh that's all and the employee said we'll be taking in a lot more retro games in June. I thought that was an interesting comment.
As long as they advertise it. If nobody knows that they can trade in retro games, nobody’s going to bring anything in and it basically is a worthless idea. They need to put ads all over every store to promote it.
I live in Canada and on the Canadian GameStop website they don’t carry any retro games
Mind you it might hurt those local retro video game stores
I agree, I think the one thing that will save the other retro stores is that I don’t think that GameStop is going to be selling retro consoles themselves, just the games. At least for now.
Holy crap they really raised the price on Windwaker… I got really lucky and found a CIB copy at my local GameStop back in April for $20 (first time I’ve seen a single GC game in store in YEARS). Now the price is 3X
Yep, definitely gonna be harder to catch them slipping.
Loosing employees and money. They need a new idea lol
I guarantee if some of those rare wii u games actually come in stock on the website the prices will match the market
I can’t see them charging price charting prices for some of these games. There’s a reason why you can still buy Godzilla on PS4 for like $69 if you can find it at a store. They do tend to cap their prices for the most part at around $100. I’ve only seen a few outliers in the past. Only time will tell…
No PS1 or PS2 games
Looks like vice city stories on PS2 and crash bandicoot on PS one are the only ones in stock on the website right now. Remember they just started taking trade-ins so they’re probably not gonna populate a lot of stuff right away.
Great video as always 😊
Its been like this for a couple of months now, hopefully they start selling but I won't hold my breath.
They really need to start advertising that they are taking in older games. It’s hard to get people to trade things if all the employees are still claiming that they don’t take old ass because they don’t know any better. It feels like I’m always education employees on their own deals.
Go local or go home!
I had issues with that as well where i would go to gamestop and employees would have first dibs. But the manager told me to basically report stuff like that to corporate because that’s obviously not fair for customers. And usually they would take care of it. Fortunately i go to different gamestops and find stuff all the time.
Dreamcast collection for XBOX 360 is dirt cheap now at like 14.99
Knowing you Cincy you'll probably pick up some of these games if their cheap enough of course.
Key words: only if they are cheap enough… haha. Or if I have enough trade credit…
@@CincyGameHunting 👍
Yeah Gamestop is dying, and they know with so much going to digital they have to make money some how. I am just not even buyign game after release anymore that $70 thign is just to much for me so I wait for sale now. Keep up the good work brign us mroe video please and sale :D
Yeah, they needed to do this a while ago. With all the digital games happening nowadays, if they want to stay relevant, they need to sell stuff that can’t be bought digitally. This is why they were so successful in the past buying used games and being able to sell them for huge margins.
@@CincyGameHunting I only saw a few i wuld get btu there not much I like. I wish that Evil West was lower in rpice which i do want, and wish their mario stuff was cheaper, I still want Mario Kart 8 but the price is just to high. Must be your local stores. These games all say unavailable for me
They’re pretty much unavailable for everyone right now. I think this is fairly new, and there have not been a bunch of trade-ins yet. The main idea of this video is to let people know to keep an eye out for when they start to show up online and in stores in the near future. Once people realize that they can actually trade the stuff in again, there will be more retro stuff in stock.
@@CincyGameHunting yea I get it. I actually got Mario and sonic rio 2016 recently at my local GameStop so there's hope
I figured GameStop would do this but I feel like it’s too late because the whole retro collection fiasco is very slowly dying off IMO. Also I thought you were going to talk about the pro membership changes. Seems like a step down, the 5$ Coupon is getting more restricted than before.
Yeah, I will never understand why they decided to phase out older games. Especially with the newer games going more and more digital. The pro membership thing will be a story for another day. I can’t believe they are actually raising the price by $10 a year.
