I walked into my local Gamestop yesterday, and asked about retro games. The guy first told me no (seems to be a pattern at most stores), and then I pressed further and he finally opened up the drawer for me. They didn't have anything great, but did have a decent amount of Wii U, Wii, DS, 3DS, and 360 games available. It doesn't make sense to me why these are not displayed in stores, and why the employees are so weird about them. Makes you wonder if they are hiding them to purchase for themselves or something. Overall - typical GameStop where the left foot doesn't know the what right is doing.
I would say about 75% of the stores that I go to don’t display their retro stuff and just leave them in a drawer for nobody to know about. Great way to not make money I guess for a company that’s already struggling. I still to this day find stores that don’t even know that they have the retro games sitting in the drawer until I talk them into looking for them. That’s how I have found most of my vita games that I came across in GameStop.
Every store has a different policy it seems it seems dumb to not display or put out the games to sell I can’t see how this company can compete to stay open

I’ll definitely be asking about this at my local stores! I noticed at one of my local gamestops that they have a little Wii and 3DS section. Decent stuff in there. But no other retro stuff on display.
It never hurts to ask. I know a lot of places don’t have anywhere to put their handheld stuff anymore because they got rid of the glass case they use to keep it in, so it has to stay in a drawer now.
Thanks man, don’t be afraid to ask the employees if they have anything in the drawer when it comes to retro stuff. It seems like a lot of them are not putting them out.
Me too, I don’t understand why they stopped selling retro games, especially with modern consoles, leaning more towards digital formats. Selling used games is what made GameStop so successful in the first place…
My Sunday motivation! Great upload, Cincy 🐯 my local gamestop has had very few retro games since I've seen those signs. I think the local family owned game store gets all the games ps2/Xbox and older.
And that’s how it should be. Local mom and pop shops can usually pay better trade credit. I don’t know how GameStop thinks this retro thing is going to work if they insist on not being able to sell anything in their stores, and all their employees not knowing that they can take things in.
Before all this news, GameStop used to be my secret location. While everyone was hating on it, I was picking up expensive ps3, 360, DS, and 3ds games cheap. I bought 7 CIB copies Pokémon white V2 unbelievable cheap.
Yeah, they have definitely adjusted the prices ever since they started advertising the retro stuff again. I remember picking up my copy of white version two for like 50 or 60 bucks complete
I appreciate you sharing your finds!!! Sorry it took me so long to get the video put together. Been having all kinds of audio issues and I have been out of town a lot.
It's funny that what might keep them alive is retro games when they were so disgusted at them before and not accepting them as trade-in and telling me to go to disc replay if I wanted old stuff
Yeah, they definitely messed up not taking older games for the longest time. They should’ve changed the business model as soon as digital gaming started become more prevalent, and go back to pushing for the retro stuff.
Sweet. I know they have updated a lot of the prices when they started pushing the retro stuff again but it’s good to see that you’re still be able to find some good stuff for cheap prices.
bought a gamecube game from my local gamestop a few days ago they had 2, very scratched and did not work lol, had to return it, they do not test anything!!! it was legends of WrestleMania, they also had need for speed most wanted in the gamecube but it was disc only
Yeah, I always test my games out if there’s any questions about condition. With them having the seven day return policy, it’s always smart to check them out first when you get them home. I brought that Donkey Kong 64 directly to my console as soon as I got to my house.
they are for sure! most gamestops are required to send anything older than the ps3 xbox360 and ds to the warehouses to be distributed in q4 to the bigger stores that would do well with retro. Ive visted about 50 of them over the past 2 months some will sell the older gens but most are sticklers
I used to clean up at gamestop. They definitely repriced their inventory closer to market now. The app/website is hardly accurate in my experience. Cant tell how many times titles show unavailable only for me to see it on the shelves in the stores.
I will say that I think there is a rule, where if there is only one available at a certain store that it will not populate on the website as being available. But if you go into a store and ask them to look up a certain game in their computer system, they can tell you if it’s available anywhere in town within 30 miles I believe. I learned that one a while back.
I remember searching the GameStop website in Canada and I was getting so frustrated at how many vita games were still showing up on their page compared to the American site. I am curious if the vita was more popular in Canada
The manager at your college town. Told me she has to send everything to the warehouse. I ask why she said because they want to hold stuff to put thier website
Curious to know what’s taking them so long. It’s literally been two months since they started taking retro stuff again. Maybe they’re planning on just a big drop randomly soon.
They tend to think everything that’s not. Current generation is retro in their eyes I guess. I would think that you have to be at least two generations removed.
i found wario land 4 along with a ton of other good gameboy/color/advance at a local store about a month ago, it was marked at $35 but with coupons and trade credit i basically got it for free
That’s awesome, I haven’t seen a ton of gameboy stuff but I did see one copy of fire red on the GBA, unfortunately, it was definitely a fake. I really wish a lot of the store still had their DS case in the glass to be able to show off some of these cartridge games that they’re getting in.
I wonder if should be lookign fro 360 games before they up on price, wanted a copy of red dead with the dlc which run and look way better then switch and ps4 version too
I think if the game is backwards compatible, it will probably still be available on the modern Xbox store. They wouldn’t have gone to all that trouble to backwards, compatible a bunch of games and then not be able to sell them on the current store.
Does GameStop actually still accept retro game trade-ins (for PS2, GameCube & OG Xbox games) cuz in my local GS they don’t accept retro games, they only do from PS3, Xbox360, Nintendo DS/3DS, Wii & Wii U and PS Vita, I wonder why…?
I'm going to guess poor employee training. If a game is on the website as tradable, then the stores are suppose to take it in. I traded a GameCube and a GBA game in a few weeks ago with no issue. I have heard that the older stuff mostly gets sent in to the warehouse to be distributed, but I'm not sure if that's protocol for all stores, as I have seen a lot of stores selling them. I have had times in the past when I had to educate their employees on sales that they are running, because they had no clue. Bottom line is, if the game is tradable, then it will scan in their system as so when you bring it in. If they tell you they can't take it, it's because they are just too lazy to package it up to ship to the warehouse, or they have crappy management that doesn't inform their employees how to do there job properly... Hope that helps
I feel like some of thd employees just keep the retro gold for themselves. The one gamestop employee before they started officially taking in retro told me he usually grabs all the retro rare items. Honestly i believe it depends on who is in the store sadly. I have been very lucky at my local gamestop. Other gamestops though it's like i am inconveniencing them by asking. Gamestop needs to get on the stores! I found this past week def jam ny, and the week before spiderman shattered memories, couple weeks before that was luigis mansion and before that was mario superstar. Also saw they had mario kart 64 befind the counter hanging in one of those gamestop bags. Ive been loving seeing what they got and they all know i come in and straight to the retro lol
That’s awesome man. Glad you were able to find some good stuff. I’ve heard some thing similar in the past as well about employees taking all the good stuff. And I’ve even had an employee tell me straight to my face it sometimes they take the good stuff that comes in. Honestly if they’re taking it to play that’s awesome. They don’t get paid that much in the first place so it’s a nice perk. But if they’re just taking everything to put on eBay, that’s kind of lame, and I’ve heard that as well from people, saying their managers have done that
@@CincyGameHunting yup literally came out of my other gamestop which I know they have their retro stuff in the back but an employee I don't normally deal with I asked if they had any retro. She said no all retro on the website and I last week had the other employee show me what they had behind the counter. My main gamestop has now moved their retro to the bottom rack of each of the 2 different consoles. I told her and she didn't say anything lol. Guess it depends on the employee and store.
Yeah, I’ve been to both. The Donkey Kong 64 was actually a trade-in that they ended up selling me. Other stores have had games as well that have been traded in, but every time I bring it up to stores that claim that they send them in, they are saying that the stores that are selling them are doing The wrong thing, and that corporate had mandated they send them in.
I’m not positive on this, but I think I remember hearing that GameStop actually bought Funcoland back in the day along with Babbage’s and EB games. So if that’s true, maybe they’re using the old playbook…?

As long as you have a store in town where you live, you can always return stuff if they don’t come the way you wanted or if it’s a fake or reproduction. I have never been hassled about returning things that didn’t show up the way I wanted.
I wouldn't bother with retro-games from GameStop or any other establishments. These last few years of insane collector's prices, unscrupulous scalpers, and resellers has permanently driven me and countless others towards emulation.
I still have a firm rule that I won’t pay more than $15-$20 for any game unless I’m buying it on trade credit. I have picked up most of the heavy hitters from my Wii U collection from GameStop before they fixed all the prices recently for their retro push. Probably got around $500 worth of games for around 50 to 60 bucks. I don’t think I have seen anybody that has been able to emulate Wii U yet. I usually only emulate the really really pricy old stuff and arcade stuff.
@@CincyGameHunting Actually, Wii U emulation is much better with the current edition of Cemu. I myself played and beat BOTW and Bayonetta 2 on my PC. For BOTW, you can use a Bluetooth controller with motion gyro such as a cheap, knockoff PS4 controller I bought online for the shrine temples that require it. Or use mouse and keyboard. I was able to complete all shrine quests using both methods. Not completely perfect (yet) but it's really close now.
I used to buy retro stuff off their website. Went hard at it, but it got aggravating and I tapped out even before they started to have nothing. Nearly everything is in rough shape. Most disc only, discs were scratched to hell/over buffed, cartridges were discolored with label ripping, etc. At the time I was doing a bunch of returns in store, and it wasn’t an easy process, so I decided it’d be easier and I’d be happier with paying a bit more and getting stuff from elsewhere.
I actually have never had an issue with returning stuff to the store. I always test everything out as soon as it comes in just in case. But the things that have not worked, I’ve never been given a hassle by my local store. Sounds like you might have some employees that are just not interested in being helpful. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the vita stuff starts showing up again soon on the website.
Yeah, I saw that a couple days ago. I have a feeling that 360 games might start getting a smidge expensive unless they are backwards compatible and available on the modern store.
I really love going to GameStop but the company itself is just a joke. I’ve talk to multiple employees that just hate their job and after the explained why I really couldn’t blame them.
Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of the same things. The only reason I still shop GameStop is because if you manipulate their sales and trade in deals, you can usually get tons of stuff for next to nothing.
Now watch the prices go through the roof because GameStop GameStop wants to sell them at a higher price episode 1 the Facebook sellers see that they're going to Mark there was stuff has the same
We’ll see how it goes. They have definitely not gone egregious with the prices yet. Seems like they’re staying pretty close to price charting for most things. I do like the fact that they are capping everything off at $99.99.
😂😂😂They have gotten rid of selling and collecting since after NES Days. Only a few year ago did they start getting old games. Majority of the time, those games end up in the trash/junk yard.
They honestly should never have gotten rid of older games. With all the modern stuff getting more and more digital it’s going to kill the stores, faster and faster if they don’t have games that are being traded in that they can resell in the store.
@@CincyGameHunting those up on the hierarchy of GS make those decisions are long gone to another company and or retired. Going back for them to get those old games are harder and dwindling since collectors, resellers and state of decay are prominent. It's a tough find out there. Luckily, i bought most at a cheaper value from a gen and 2 after a modern/next gen console come up.
Good luck getting legit copies of any of the great games listed on their website for those prices. Any person who has a legit copy will just Ebay it or sell it locally rather then bring it into Gamestop. Along with the wannabe grifters who will bring in stacks of Repros to trade in, you'll also get the idiots out there who bought a copy of Mega Man x3 off of Etsy for 25$ thinking it was real who will also trade it in. Those are the copies you will be getting when you order from Gamestop.
I have definitely spotted out a lot of fakes to local GameStop’s in my area. They need to train their employees a lot better. At least, if you get a fake in the mail, you can take it back to the store and get your money back pretty easily. And if you find it in the store, you can usually inspect it to see if it’s real or not. When it comes to a eBay, you got to deal with the hassle of disputing with an unscrupulous seller. I have definitely dealt with a lot of scammers trying to sell fake stuff on eBay. That’s kind of the reason why I stopped purchasing a lot of stuff there. I still jump on from time to time if I’m looking for something specific that’s hard to find, but that’s about it.
GameStop unfortunately will never train employees on spotting fake games. A week before I started working for GameStop about a year and a half ago (I don’t work there anymore) they were taking select GBA games (mainly Pokemon) and had a fake Leaf Green in their DS cabinet. I decided to point out to the store manager and he pulled it from sale. When I was there I trained employees on spotting fake GBA and DS games and left some triwing and gamebit drivers to open them there when I left. To this day, that manager knows that in a pinch I will pick up the phone and determine the legitimacy of any games he is not sure about despite me not working there. I do this not because I like GameStop but because any fake not taken in is one less in circulation for stores like GameStop unless the owner resells it elsewhere. I still keep in touch and no official policies are in place for dealing with counterfeit games nor have some stores even heard about taking them in trade at all.
@@YTP2go I really appreciate that you help out your former co workers with this issue. It's actually not that hard to spot fakes, and even easier if they have the tools to open the games. It's all about being willing to train people and give them the proper tools
They don't send them to warehouse at least not all. Pokemon GBA games are the only "required" ones. I would know more then anyone else on this. In fact just seen gale of darkness in a store
I’ve had at least 10 different stores tell me that anything they get that is retro they are sending directly to the warehouse. Doesn’t matter what it is. They just don’t want to deal with it I guess. It’s about half and a half with the stores in my area. It doesn’t seem like anybody seems to know the real way it’s supposed to be done. I literally saw a game sitting on the counter and asked about it and they said they couldn’t sell it to me because it needed to be sent in along with all the other retro stuff.

But the things that have not worked, I’ve never been given a hassle by my local store. Sounds like you might have some employees that are just not interested in being helpful. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the vita stuff starts showing up again soon on the website.
Microsoft has announced that it will be closing the digital Xbox 360 Store on July 29, 2024
The digital future is coming, Gamestop wants to extend the life of the brand a couple more years now.
They should’ve spotted this out along time ago and brought physical game from older generations back sooner
Aren't they Vintage and not Retro? Retro is a new item designed to appear vintage.
Haha, I mean the fact that most of the Pokémon GBA games are reproductions, wouldn’t that fall in the retro category in your definition. Just kidding.
