    Love watching these videos , I have done A/c work for 19 yrs and you hit the nail on the head with your explanation of water boiling at low pressure, would like to mention too to other viewers who might want to know that you should charge on the high side initially and if you need to add Freon / r134a it should be on the low side , and you should always leave system boil off for 5 mins before runningA/C otherwise compressors can hydraulically lock up and bust pistons up. I taught A/C in colleges for a few yrs it’s also a misnomer that A/C systems blow cold air this is an incorrect statement as an A/C system is a heat exchanger it blows cooler air as you put heat from inside car into Freon then expel the heat outside the car via condenser. This gentleman knows plenty and I’m glad he shares what he can with everyone, so people (lay or not) can understand

    • @tbone9405
      @tbone9405 2 роки тому

      And your incorrect statement is “ freon “, is a brand name, proper term is refrigerant!

    • @tbone9405
      @tbone9405 2 роки тому

      @Mike Studmuffin usually your are adding to a system with some pressure in it , pressure switch turns system off on low pressure. If system had no refrigerant in it, putting it in a vacuum is the proper way.

    Eric it’s funny that you mentioned R2W. Because of his and your videos, I was able to go from no AC experience to successfully completing a complete AC overhaul on my beloved 95 chevy g20 conversion van, which has front and rear AC. I replaced the compressor, pressure switchs, evaporator, orrifice tube, expansion valve, o-rings, flushed everything, vacuumed, and recharged. I learned the hardway that Santech is not better than Acdelco, and your diagnosing methodology came out in me and I was able to use the gm service manual to deduce that my recent ac issue was due to a bad high pressure switch that I installed new during the overhaul of last summer. Well ysterday I completed and it is working correctly now, so I thank you and R2W!!

    Got the tools delivered from Denny(Sataman Schmidt). I must say I'm impressed with TOPTUL's quality considering the price. The delivery was lightning fast-I had barely finished paying and I got an email with the tracking number-they came in 1 business day-impressive! I have bought a whole set of 1/2 inch 6 point impact 8 mm-32 mm shallow and deep sockets. They came with a swivel extension and a 6 inch straight extension. Denny threw the 15 mm and the 18 mm deep sockets in for free since they don't come with the set. Class act! Very happy to support Eric too for making these awesome videos!

    42:50 I will never forget the day I was at the shop and a Honda Civic pulled up with steam billowing out of the front grill and out from under the hood. I went up to greet the guy and ask him what I could for him (assuming that he was coming in right away after noticing the steam from the very obvious coolant leak he had). He wanted his free washer fluid top-off and nothing more. I said "Sir, are you aware of the steam that's coming out of the engine bay? You have a serious coolant leak right now." He said "Yeah I know, I just want that washer fluid for now." 😦 I put on my burn glove and popped the hood, and I could immediately see the top tank of the radiator was cracked and spewing steam and coolant. I topped off the washer fluid and asked him if he wanted a quote real quick on replacing the radiator. He declined. This was summer in god damned Tucson, Arizona and this guy drove away in that car with no care in the world. I was speechless. The way some people prioritize repairs/work is really whacky. I understand that the washer fluid was free and maybe he couldn't afford the rad at that time, but he didn't even want a quote. He was totally not concerned.

    Great procedure video Eric. What's more interesting about any A/C major part replacement is many mechanics do not add any pag oil to the system often unless it's a compressor replacement job. I've watched them do it and I have also watched them evacuate the system in 10 minutes and call it good all while guessing on how many pounds/oz's of R134 to add. Once thing I didn't understand was how the radiator was damaged. Hard to think the condenser rubbed on it enough to do that to just the one side. It pays to have the right tools and equipment but most importantly, it pays that the shop uses their equipment to the fullest so that the finished job is done correctly. Yes, it is amazing to see our tools manufactured outside of the USA. Seems like that is changing for the future as import/export laws get updated so we may just see more USA quality sooner than later.
    Regarding "wrench sets", I also have noticed many sets of wrenches do not include the 9mm and 11mm size for some reason. Depending on the count of wrenches in a set, some come with the 11mm, not the 9mm and some with the 9mm not the 11mm. Can't figure why as there are plenty of 9mm and 11mm nuts and bolts on just about anything out there. Go out to buy them and individually, they are very expensive from $15 to $25 each.

    I can remember my Physics teacher in high school demonstrating this same principle. Another way you can show it with the same equipment is if you were to wrap your hand around the bottom of your bottle of water it would really start to make that water start to get a rolling boil to it. Its an excellent way to demonstrate that principle, good job.

    Hey Mr. O., thanks for the video. A similar story for you, I did a condenser on an early 2000's Mercedes ML350. The system was totally discharged. When diagnosing the problem, I pulled a vacuum and it held, so I charging and the whole charge crapped out onto the ground (btw, PAG oil stains blacktop and stinks like cat piss). I found a plastic pull through (the kind that electric aftermarket rad fans use) that holds the center of the condenser tight to the radiator, it is a factory install so it's factory MB. Years of rubbing caused a nice sized hole in the condenser. A vacuum pulled the plastic thing tight to the condenser to hold the vacuum, when charging the system it let loose.
    Sometimes bad installs are from the factory too.

    Toptul was founded and made in Taiwan. Yeah, Taiwan but, this company is manufacturing some of the highest quality tools at a competitive price. Snap-On could sell their tools cheaper but, they want to you pay what they market. $110 dollars for a Snap-On 1/4 Ratchet, come on! Busting my balls trying to afford "good tools" so to speak. Lol I've come accross some of their stuff and honestly made me think about all the money I spent and just how comparable Toptul is, respectively to other brands. Stress tests, wear tests, etc. On another note, Great video Eric! From working in the car business for many years I've seen alot of people turn down some scary things that needed to be replaced. Paper thin rotors (in the rear LITERALLY paper thin), steel belt on tires fully shown, strut mounts fully rusted and not even attached and so much more. Some people want a death wish so, just fix what they came in for , even of its just a bulb or a/c fix! lol Learn so much from you Eric! Keep the videos coming. You motivate us all so much! Excellent video and the demonstration you did was awesome. Most times I also change the drier but in your case the condenser will still outlast the rest of the car.
    Maybe you will get the rest of the repair at state inspection time.
    I think that some people don't realize that steering and suspension wear can be dangerous for themselves as well as other people around them. I hope you document all those items and have the customer sign it since I got burned once.

    34:02 Science class with Mr. O. That was a cool way of demonstrating boiling points and pressures. This is why it takes longer to cook at higher altitudes. Less pressure = lower boiling point. Because it requires less heat to boil water, you need to cook food longer at that lower heat.

    I am a professional chemist. The demo at 35:20 showing that water boils a room temperature, if the air pressure above it is low enough, is a classic of first year chemistry. Sure enough the water boils vigorously at 36:30.

    Great video!!! Wow all that salt!!!!! I can't believe that cooling fan module job what ever shop that did it should pay for the condenser! The owner should have bit the bullet and replaced the radiator as well. The guy Jason that commented earlier made a valid point about the customer repairing the A/C system and stressing the leaking radiator. It can give out any day, she'll have to bring it right back to you, and pay for the labor all over again.

    This video is educational as everything else you've made but I really enjoy the slice-of-life recanting of the tornado you had the night before. I can't put my finger on it, but I strongly feel that great mechanics are people first and technicians later. If you discard human moments like bald eagles, crappy mailboxes and road trips with your brother in favor of all work, all the time, then what legacy are you really working for? To summarize, you seem like a really cool dude and if I were ever in the area I'd love to be a crazy UA-camr to drop by for a quick visit. Cheers mate!

    • @bennyblanko3
      @bennyblanko3 3 роки тому

      That is a good question? I don't know didly about ac as it never gets hot here ... but, I'd probably replace it on account ... but maybe pulling a vacuum gets all the moisture out of the dryer? Someone who does ac in Houston or LA should answer?

    Customer logic: Yes fix the a/c but leave the radiator because the car isn't worth that repair..ok If you cant afford it now you will afford it later..and have to pay labor all over again

    The term for lowering the pressure in a system to remove moisture is called "sublimation ".
    Pulling a vacuum in the system & then letting it rest in a vacuum for a period of time will tell you if you have s leak. If the pressure increases from it's resting state the system has a leak OR still has moisture in the systr6.
    Another way to dry a system is to pull a vacuum & break the vacuum using nitrogen. Then pull a vacuum again & retest.

    My wife hit a deer with her 3.5 Pacifica and I only pulled the top plastic off to remove transmission cooler, condenser, and the radiator. After watching how you did it explains why I had to buy a second radiator when I poked a hole in it trying to get the hose clamp back on with a screw driver because there wasn’t much room 🤦‍♂️
