The art is cool, its just not a style I enjoy in this context. Don't get me wrong, its beautiful art, but a little too cartoony for what I imagine a DM Screen should be. If one comes out that has the big oil-canvas fantasy style that tends to be on the covers of most books, then I'd get that one.
Not going to hate on the art because I do like it. It's just the wrong context for me.
Same for me as I sought out the alt covers. This doesn't suit me or my style
@Woosang72 this style is much more similar to the alt covers than the standard covers, and I love it!
The wilderness/dungeon DM kit screens are peak, imo.
I would say this about the entire revised system....not enough gritty combat/tension that drew me to the game in the first place, both in gameplay and in art styles. Sorry, but I just don't want a cheery fun place where everyone is superpowered, spending their days frolicking in the meadow playing with fuzzy bunnies and with their best buddy, Smiley the Unicorn.
Art is nice and really delightful. But my opinion, it is a bit distracting because depicts certain characters. DM-screen should depict landscape, town, dungeons and dragons😅 as previous ones. I wish there will be various types of screens.
THIS! 💯 Absolutely!
Nope, just one. They are never making another screen again.
I use most of my DM screens as wall-mounted artwork (fit really well in the void spaces of my living room above the windows), so I'm glad to get one that has some humanoid characters for my niece to admire, given the preponderance of dragons in my D&D-themed decorations hasn't exactly connected with her (as a young girl) but she loves the Young Adventurer's Guide books because of the cool character illustrations inside. Point being, I think this is a good idea from WOTC as the artwork of this DM screen appeals to a younger audience of players, and D&D is, in my opinion, at it's best when it's welcoming in new, young players (when I was a young boy the preponderance of dragons connected with me, I loved the Draconomicon when it was given to me as a gift by somebody that didn't even know what D&D was but thought I'd like the dragons, and that's broadly the same experience I hope to provide for my niece in the next few years as she becomes more capable of playing an actual game of D&D instead of just "watching"). She always loves halfling and gnome artwork especially, because she's still young enough to not quite connect that they're "fully grown adults" (or at least, actively suspends her disbelief, which is the goal) and pretends they're really cool kids with magic clothing. I've already got plenty of cool DM screens I can use during a "normal" session, but I'll definitely be using this screen when I start DMing for my niece.
Eveyrone wants somewhting different, no big deal
Totally this
I agree with others that the art feels more like the alt. covers’ style… Doesn’t match the style of the regular core books’ covers at all. The art’s well done for what it is, but I hope they offer a different version too with something more epic and in tune with the standard covers.
I love this, and assume it's limited stock like the alt covers, being replaced by art that's closer to the style of the standard covers
I wish there was another art option
Since it's the 50th anniversary edition, I believe there is gonna be another option down the road 🤔
Yeah this feels more like the special edition DM Screen option then the basic one. The style matches more with those cover then the art on the basic PH and DMG.
Just wait.
Grab a glue stick
@Ivoke82 exactly, I love it! I always wished there would be an alt cover for the DM screen too
What would be really nice on a DM screen with all those Condition reminders is a thin sheet of metal behind that panel, so you could put little numbered magnets to remind you which monsters have which conditions
@@LeMayJoseph
That actually a really good idea 🤔 I need to add that to my own 👍
I use paper clips
You could do post it notes with numbers or something like that.
Artwork is a huge miss for me. For those who also are not feeling it, Beadle and Grimm just released a map pack that has - in addition to all the maps - a gorgeous new DM screen. However, the downside it's Beadle and Grimm, so you're paying a good chunk of change for all the quality content that also comes along with it.
Is Beadle one for the 2024 rules?
@@coldstream11 The maps themselves are taken from the 2024 DMG. So I imagine that the screen would also be 2024 rules.
Art is a miss for me. The characters are cool but this feels like something that should be in the PHB. I feel like DM screens should be setting tone of the game and what the players will encounter - not the characters themselves.
Character illustrations can *inspire* and remind players that they're playing a *fantastical* game. Every PC ought to be reflected somewhat, since It depicts _every_ *species* and *class.*
.....there IS no "tone" of the game to be set besides the one the GM chooses. I will continue to not remotely understand this opinion.
Not a fan of the art for this one (favourite is the Wilderness Kit) so will give it a skip, glad they have made a new screen with updated rules but just can’t get past the art
The wilderness one is my favorite too, that painting like look is gorgeous
Will there be other art options with the same kind of information?
This is what the people want
@@Caiphex Obviously not, because much of the comments are people who're saying that's not what they want on their screen
Bring back Larry Elmore art
I really love this DM screen class, matches perfectly the alt cover books. I'm sure there will be different art styles for next screens, but that's just unique compared to older screens!
DM screen reminds me of a fighting game character selection
I miss Easley and Elmore.
What about a digital DM drop-down on dndbeyond?
A drop-down that is customizable with quick reference tables that all a DM would need to do is hover and the reference screen came down to reference you could even do multiple cover spots for each panel of the DM screen.
Todd got to interview his wife
which one is his wife?

i like the information it has and the way they have adapted it to players that have notes on a laptop. The art is good, but i feel its more art for players not the DM. I think of a DM screen as a wide angle shot of a landscape or battlefield being overlooked by a Red Dragon.
Well, I mean the art is literally player facing. 😉
@LandonTheDM except for the interior art that's literally _"a wide angle shot of a landscape"_ overlooked from a high vantage point 😉
That full-armor adventurer with the prosthetic leg is awesome!
Loving everything except the art
Let me edit...I do love the dragons
The characters feel like such a person/wish fulfillment thing. Beautiful art, but in my opinion it does not belong at anyone else’s table.
Gonna yoink that interior layout for sure. The art is pretty!
Pink and cartoony isn't for everyone. If you like it, buy it, but don't get bent out of shape when someone prefers Frazetta.
This doesn't look anything like Frazetta what are you talking about
Artwork is really gorgeous. It’ll go really nicely with the special edition covers on the three core books that I’m picking up! ❤
As a UI/UX designer I love these Vids. This and the Layout video for the PHB release was sooo cool to cover.
Not a fan of the art. Hope they release a different version.
3:43 "When I run things, I rarely do combat." bruh
Watched for 10 minutes and still had to manually pause the video to see, what information is actually on the DM side of the screen... and not all of it is super useful...
And yeah, the art is... questionable.
Welp, lost 10 minutes, but saved 15$.. thanks, I guess. 😅
The video shots of the DMs side the info are blurred. You can't tell what is on them. Maybe once it is out I'll find out if this will be useful for me.
@@kurtoogle4576 i paused the video on one of the shots with the inner side (for example 02:26) and could at least see the section titles, I hope it can give you the initial impression of usefullness.
Thank you for increasing the font size for all of us older DMs that need our glasses now. 😉
FINALLY! I'm so glad they made the mini version of the DMs screen. A little meta tho...
I’ll be the one to say it… we don’t like the external art. Sure, it’s pretty. But we want DM screens to set a tone for the campaign. We want imaginative landscapes. We want interesting monsters. Show us action. No DM is trying to put together a campaign and says “I want a DM screen that shows off unity”.
The various 5E screens looked great. Curse of Strahd screen gave a spooky tone. Rage of Demons demonstrated an imposing threat. The rule expansion box set with the foil art version of the Essentials box screen was my favorite for general landscape. This new art is a downgrade, which is a shame because from the looks of it, the included information layout seems great. Please release alternate art soon.
Why is there blank space and art on the inside?
Something about calling D&D cute feels confusing. I like the new rules so far and I am excited. But, I want a screen with an intense battle scene on it.
Is that Joy Ang’s art style? I recognize the iconic way she draws claws, the way the scales is shaded and just the overall way everything was shaded. Love her art, to be honest, love to just squint and inspect all of the tiny teeny details in her art, and the overlay she uses that makes it similar to a water paper.
EDIT: Lmao should’ve just watch the video for **35 seconds!** 😅😂 yep! It’s hers. Such an iconic art style, love it, chef kiss.
It's so gorgeous! 😍
I appreciate this screen and it's artwork! I own plenty of DM screens already, but this is the first one I've seen that I know for sure the artwork will connect with my young niece on a personal level (she doesn't really care for dragon artwork, but she loves artwork of D&D adventurers, especially gnomes and halflings because she still kind of believes/actively suspends her disbelief and pretends they're cool kids with magic clothing). She loves the Young Adventurer's Guide books for their artwork, and I know she'll love the artwork on this. In the next few years when she's old enough to play a semi-real game of D&D, I will definitely be taking this DM screen down from its wall mount (I use my DM screens as artwork when they're not at the table) to DM her games with. My niece aside, I also personally love this aesthetic, and am always stoked at new adventurer artwork that I can use as inspiration for NPCs or show players who are stuck on what they want their next character to be (I find giving players artwork of adventurers is by far and away the best method of giving them immediate inspiration for character creation, or even for giving them ideas for character backstory/lore they like that I can ham up and integrate into the narrative down the line).
I can see this DM screen becoming a favourite for DM's during session zeroes!
This is a great post, in the sense that it encapsulates what I feel is the target audience of the newest edition. I am glad that it resonates with your young niece, but I no longer feel like the intended audience, which is fine, but still sort of bums me out.
Really love hearing all the thoughts going in to the new DM screen!!! I’m not sure if I’d ever switch the official screen over my handmade one which is more tailored to my needs but I absolutely wanna give it a look, especially love how it’s made keeping in consideration that a lot of DMs use laptops now.
Also love the touches put into the artwork, especially the disability representation!!!
Artwork can be polarizing. When you swing big, some people aren’t going to be pleased. That’s the way it goes. I dig it. Looking forward to getting it on the table to see what the players think.
Looks great, I love the stylized art and the symmetry of its composition!
The art is awesome! Love that it shows all the classes and species and the collaborative element of D&D.
every piece of art is going to evoke a variety of feelings and responses, which is totally cool. personally, i really like it, but my style's more than a bit different. it'd be fun if they did new art periodically, though from a publication perspective that's probably insane.
The art is way too cartoonish for me
I know everyone is excited, I love 2024 edition overall but, DM screen for minis? Players was asking for it? What did I missed? ;p
The art is fun and hopefully will get a whole new generation of gamers excited about gaming just like the 2nd edition dmg screen did for me. I think it would be smart of WotC to have multiple art styles however. Most of the character designs of this layout feel like forced inclusion rather then interesting builds/designs. I had no idea that the dude in the pink dress was a druid tbh, that is a problem when real world identity becomes more important then class design. I have no problems with guys sporting pink dresses.. but again it doesn't make me think of druid duals or ancient lore of the old woods. To each their own I guess :)
Art is nice piece, but not something I would want up in front. Maybe for some though. If you want to fill different styles, I hope you choose next one to reflect what the long term invested players would like.
I dig it, so it's bold of you to assume that this isn't something that _"long term invested players would like"_
You assume I assumed I assumed I meant ALL when I said right before the key note you want to focus is that maybe for some would like it. Go creep elsewhere..@@SortKaffe
The interior seems nice, though I still think it can be a bit improved. Like the Skills section do not need the ability imo, but instead some example. The long list of terrain type information could be changed to something that might more suddenly come up. As usually I know if the players will find themselves in a swamp, but it might be harder to know the cost of certain common items etc.
The front of the screen really does not feel like dungeons and dragons. The art style feels cartoony, and it feels like a Players Handbook thing with all the characters. I will wait until you release some alternative covers before I buy a new DM screen.
I love the art, I think it will look great at my table! This is my favorite "base" (non dungeon or wilderness) DM screen for 5th. Also the actual insides are going to be amazing.
Everybody here is talking about the art, but what about the stuff on the back of the screen? I can’t believe they still make the list of conditions into a wall of text. There’s so many better tables out there that are easier to use
I too would’ve preferred art for each condition to make it more visually referenceable, tho’ I appreciate compacting it into one panel.
Would have loved a peek inside but it sounds like a huge improvement
The art doesn't fit with the product line up. Seeing characters instead of vistas feels like one is looking back at what you didn't make instead of imagining places you've yet to explore. Increasing font size and then leaving large gaps on the screen suggests this screen will have the least information of any screen we've had. Not an improvement on materials, information or art.
I don't agree with most of these other comments, I really like the artwork. Looks fine to me
The info on the screen looks great, but the art feels tacky unfortunately
Ugh.. Was hoping for a list of weapon mastery effects 😣
I'm really mad about the choice to accommodate laptops...
i don't use a laptop and now I have to suffer all the useful information being in the least useful spot, also how hard is it to lower the lid a little?
As a DM, I would be more interested in what information is visible on the back, how it is arranged. Pictures of the DM-facing side would have been much more helpful. That would have helped me more with my purchase decision. Unfortunately, I don't find this post helpful...
I will stick with my custom made screen, but this looks nice
The art feels like it's the alt. art for the "actual" screen
This one is hideous :c
I want one that looks as good as the artwork in the PHB, in the same style
i love the artwork!!!!!
I feel the same way about DM screen as I do about all the new art in the 2024 players' handbook. It is pretty but that's not what I am looking for when I imagine D&D worlds. I want more grit and scary realism. None of the character art on this screen or the 24 PHB inspired me. Cute, flamboyant, and whimsical are not how I think of my characters. I am getting a little fearful of what could be coming in the monster manual. Maybe I am just too old school but I want the monsters to be scary and mean not cute and cuddly.
Do people who ordered the digital/physical bundle get that DM screen?
New DM Screen? THE TIME IS NOW! KAKRAW!
Ew, is there not another more basic, traditional one? Sure, its a cool art piece, but not what I or my players want from the constant, persistent presence of a DM screen.
DM screen is not coming with the book right?
Outstanding work, team! Thank you for your dedication and passion!
The art is in perfect line with the limited editions art on the core books. Love the art style.
Your passion is contagious.
I'm seeing a lot of people say they don't really like the art for this one, that it's too cartoony or something. But personally, I don't see a problem with that! It is some delightful stuff, and just because DM screen art is *usually* something else, doesn't mean it *can't* be this. Kudos to the artist for making a great piece!
My small wish is that someday the DM screen includes a list of random NPC names.
To add to that idea, a little table to quickly throw personality traits to the NPC and how they’re useful (or harmful) to player goals! As a DM rules aren’t usually what’s hardest to remember, it’s little improvisational things like this to keep the game moving forward.
Print a sheet and clip it to your screen. That's half the reason screens are useful.
The art seems nice. I don’t get hate for it.
You looked at all of the DM screens that came before, and you thought that this art style was the best fit for a 50th anniversary homage!? WHY!? I guarantee this art decision has already cost you sales on this product. The art isn't bad, it's just wrong. I will not be buying this product, exclusively due to the art.
Really, really, really don't like the cartoony artwork on this one. Not my style at all, much prefer the art style on the 5E or the 5E reincarnated sets.
That is a really cartoony art. Ugh. Not Dnd style.
Guess I'll DIY one insted, maybe in leatherette with magnet strips inside.
Bring back à la cart to the marketplace
I hope we get playable goblins n new gem dragon art / the gem dragons in the next main set of books for dnd 2024
Beauty, Beast, Bard
With all the great artwork done on the 3 core books and even the alternative covers. This is what you chose display? Think about it for a little. This is the one piece of art that will get seen the most!! You are sitting behind it, they are staring at it for hours…… nope hard pass. The inside tables will be for me and I will cover the outside with something else.
The info looks much better, but daaaamn the art is 💩 compared to flying dragon from reincarnated one.
I love the art.
The art is breath taking!
It's different. The style is different. I personally love it and all the representation of the player species and classes. This one better represents the collaboration of D&D.
Not feeling the art. Would have liked more of a feel that is on the new books.
im so baffled by the art hate - im gonna be buying it JUST FOR the art, i think its absolutely superb
I was really confused as well. First thing I thought when I saw it was “That looks sick” and then the entire comments section so far is just absolutely shitting on it and I’m like ???
Like look, I’m not a WOTC shill, I think we’re entering the dark ages with their acquisition of Beyond and the VTT, so I plan on jumping ship after these updated cores release, but I’ll give them credit where credit is due.
I would've switched the travel panel on the right with the action one in the middle but okay.. I do like the art on the outside but i miss the small drawings of the conditions
Dragonborn with tail is a hard no for me.
This doesnt apear on on the european store to pre order
The art is horrible. The book art was really good, but this seems cheap. Not to mention the scene they selected seems really cheesy and un-epic.
Joining the chorus of the art being a big miss here. Wow, that’s disappointing.
I'm a simple man, I see Trystan, I hit like. Super excited to get my hands on the new screen!
The art style is not for me. I will just use my Wilderness DM screen instead.
The art is so bad I want to cry
Another product that I won't be buying.
I'ma get it.
I love their passion for it. Love seen fans make things for fans.
Walnut!
This is really cool!!! And so fun to see into the process and the careful balances that UX designers have to juggle with
I really , really hope the exterior art is NOT a sign of things to come. I really do not like this childlike naive style.
5 min of talking about art. Cool.
Whens the release date?
November 12, 2024
Like the layout, but I'm not buying it because of the art...
Beside the dragons, the art is awful... 😒
мне понравилось ! накрутка лайка и комментарий , для алгоритмов ютуба =)
Ah!!!!! It’s Trystan!!! !!!! Hi hi hi you hi!!! Oh my gosh I’m a huge fan my fellow human!! Much love!
the art kind of sucks... not emotive to me. sorry
For the inner side, you should place holdsters or such, something to stick our own notes and papers.
Not a fan of the art or the direction they went with the inside contents (which is again too new dm friendly, i mean so much suave for conditions... AGAIN?)
For a DM screen, I'm not a fan of that art at all. That looks like "5 Mintute Dungeon", not D&D
