@@J_Gamble What you said is correct! My parents believed the doctors and the audiologist that learning ASL would hinder my ability to acquire English language. Gracie Bataz well the definition of a disability is a condition that limits a persons movements, senses and activities or a handicap which is recognised by the law. Both of the definitions classify deafness as a disability

Okay, I LOVE how BuzzFeed has been adding a lot more Deaf-based videos. Being fluent in ASL now as well as knowing the culture, ASL has become my favorite language overall. 🤟🏼♥️ Edit: for everyone saying the captions are too fast or ASL is so fast - ASL does not translate into direct English. The signs are not the exact English word in the caption so it seems like they are signing the full captioned sentences fast. SEE is signing the full sentence. 😊
The captions were a little too fast for me, too. There's this neat function to slow down a video. So I could read the captions and watch the two people sign in this video, too.
@@cesar6004 I like to watch anime and movies with subtitles, too. In this video I wanted to fully take in that other language, that I don't know. With forgein movies and anime I still can hear the language. Both sign language and subtitles I have to take in visually and I can't do that at the same time and this fast. Since English isn't my first language either, I can't read it as fast, even though I would like to think that I've gotten quite good. Also: Yay, anime! ;)
Deaf people actually can enjoy music, especially with a lot of bass like rock. There’s even deaf bands! You should check out Beethoven’s Nightmare, an all-deaf rock band😊
Both my grandparents were deaf. My whole family other than them can hear. Ive always had a huge interest in the deaf community. They are people, just like us, just trying to communicate.
Along with the comment above, it’s the same as any other spoken language you aren’t fluent in-it sounds faster because you don’t know the meanings associated with the words and thus it all kinda blurs together :)
I think English in general is typically spoken slower than other languages so it can be jarring to see how fast they go. I felt the same way when I listened in on a Chinese conversation, so were speaking so quickly I wondered how they could hear the tones.
english and American sign language is completely different. So they are translating what they are singing into proper english, but they are not signing those exact words.
As an ASL interpreter in a mainstream school, I have encountered a lot of interpreters like the ones she describes and it’s infuriating. We’re there to empower Deaf students, NOT oppress. One of the reasons I’m leaving the field altogether :/
Years ago my husband learned ASL because he didn't like not being able to communicate with people. It's served him well, be it talking to a neighbor or a coworker. I don't know more than a few words myself. IMO you don't need to be perfectly fluent. People appreciate that you try and show them respect.
One of the rare buzzfeeed videos besides worth it, that i find wise and touching. I am hearing impaired myself, can't hear out of my left ear and partial hearing loss on the right. It is so hard to communicate or make sure you know what's going on, when you can't hear or hear so well. It is so easy to feel alone and out of touch. But I also loved the ladies mind set of acceptance of self that was always a hard struggle for me. Very powerful video.
Glad to see these two back again. Really interesting, even if I can't understand ASL at all. I found out that ASL is actually descended from French Sign Language, and that's why is totally different to the BSL sign language group. Also I can't believe Mixxie didn't learn ASL until he was 18. That would have been so difficult. I think all schools should teach that country's sign language.

Yes, I would be useful in real life as well. When you’re in situations where you can’t talk or can’t hear what the other person is saying. It’ll also make us more understanding of deaf people and their culture.
Please continue to make more of these videos. I think that more hearing people and hard of hearing people will want to watch them because we want to be respectful and enjoy being friends with others. It has been my experience that hearing people (young people and students) will group hard of hearing and deaf in the same category and they think that because we can't hear, we do not know when they are making fun of us and being annoying. I am not deaf, just have a moderate hearing loss corrected by hearing aids. I have always wanted to know how to interact with the deaf community in a respectful way. Deaf people are intelligent and perfectly able to do anything they put their mind to. They are not help less and deserve the same respect and dignity we all have for each other.
Can some hearing people think?- maybe this is the next most searched google question. Love the two interviewees here! It's a really deeper and more inspiring one than the previous video with them but both videos are great! Learnt more about their struggles and happiness ! Good job buzzfeed!
This is so true I agree with Maxxie I think his name was and Lia. Where deaf people are just like us, just they can’t hear us, they can do everything we can do just have a different way of communication. We don’t need to fear them we just need to learn more about their culture and understand that they too have been under a lot of hardships just like everyone else. If we work together to become better communicating and understanding each other’s cultures, history and languages we will be better as whole.
i am so excited to learn ASL! Our differences are what make us Beautiful! I think sign language is the most beautiful language because it uses words and expressions to make words, just like our tone can make a sentence sound sweet or sarcastic I have a few deaf tables come in every now and again and I cant wait to see their faces when i can actually speak a full sentence to them
Part of my wishes that I ended up fully deaf instead of just half deaf? I like the ability it gives me to still express myself, but there's more of a barrier than if one was completely deaf because people can't tell if you're being serious of not. I have to always ask for headphones and such that are designed for one ear so I'm not uncomfortable. I can completely tone out people if they are on my deaf side. And, spatial audio doesnt work for me. I also can't sign for the life of me, but I'd really love to. I'm a very tactile learner because of my disability, which can definitely be very hard for school I'm thankful for the job that I have that is very hands on and experimental.
i don’t understand how people will act pitiful around the deaf. if i met a deaf person, i’d be really excited. i’d get to learn more ASL and learn about deaf culture.
I wish they taught ASL more in schools, they do have it in one school in my district but it just needs to be more readily available to learn because it’s so critical to understanding people ❤️
okay i need to express this: I really like the ppl in this video, they made me realise how much more complex signing is and also how big of a difference it makes (or that there even is one) in changing between ASL and SEE. The text is a little to fast for my liking so i had to pause a lot and it stopped me from looking at them, but thats inevitable i guess since they didnt sign in a slow pace and the text has to keep up. Also the are both quite good looking and fun so I hope to see them return in more vids ^^
I love how expressive these two are with their face. Lots of people I know are kinda worried about what their face looks like, or scared if they make a weird looking face, but these two and any other deaf person make all sorts of faces!
I always respect both people who are using American Sign Language (ASL) because they are proud of being Deaf. I really understand them . Who was born Deaf, it is necessary to use ASL signs in order to have great communications with whomever is Hearing or Hard of Hearing. That is essential. Keep being strong and positive! Thanks
i think actually the signs would most likely be smaller or slower, they might even avoid eye contact while signing though it depends on the person. facial expressions are both grammatical and can show different meanings for certain words. generally speaking in deaf culture it's common to be very blunt/straightforward so it's not a common issue! the closest comparison i can think of to lack of facial expressions would be when someone speaks in monotone. it lacks inflection, emotion, or emphasis.
Im lucky enough to go to a school with an integrated deaf program. Im not deaf however they teach everyone the alphabet in elementary, we have classes with deaf students, and in high school you can learn it. Sadly we are one of few schools that do that... we have to have deaf students bussed in from like an hour away because not many other schools have that
In 20 years I have not seen a video so inspiring and hope giving and astounding. I have just read Oliver Sack's book "Seeing Voices" which blew me away; these videos are miracles. Anyone interested in the history of sign language and the experience of deaf persons would be enriched by Sack's book. Thank you so much you beautiful people !!!!!!
This is a cool video. There are two deaf employees at my local thrift shop and they are the nicest. It really bums me out when I see them mistreated by customers who think they are ignoring them, not realizing they cant hear them. I would rly like to learn ASL
I'm hearing and would LOVE to meet deaf people. I live in Western Australia, nearly 26 and have never met anyone from the deaf community. I feel like if we had more exposure to the deaf community the barriers would come down more. I also wish our schools taught us how to sign so if we did end up meeting someone who was deaf the communication barrier wouldn't be so difficult and awkward for both deaf and hearing.
Why be scared? When its all you have known like that woman it's just natural to them I think ,I know I would be if I suddenly was losing my hearing but if it was all I'd known I think its easier
I became hard of hearing (almost deaf) not so long ago and yeah, going out alone in public is still something I need to get used to. You never know how important is your hearing until you lose it.
I am currently doing my best to learn ASL but I'm having issues finding the right source. If you have any tips please let me know. I've always been interested in the deaf community but have never had a chance or the knowledge to interact with someone of the deaf community. I truly admire the ingenuity that the deaf people of old and wish that I could have something to do with the deaf community because of it. I have always loved helping those in need and want to help the deaf community to unite with the hearing community. I even plan to adopt a deaf child to help them and to give them a chance. Because I long to know sign language, and don't think of the deaf as lesser or worthless, but instead I think of the deaf as a high esteem group can join. I think of the deaf as lucky because of the lack of hearing. When you are missing something then you begin to be grateful for things that you never would have even acknowledge, and you begin to look at things differently. I way this from experience, although I am hearing I still have suffered great losses. Because of losses important people I have been forced to look at the world in a much different way and to be grateful for everything. On top of that I have also been bullied which gave me even more reason for looking at things differently. Keeping an open mind is the only way to enter new worlds.
I think Mixxie and I would REALLY get along with eachother, but I'm still learning sign language 😅 that wouldn't stop me though 😁 I hope that Mixxie and I could be friends, have a bond, yet also understand each others points of a view.
Along with Lia,we could be half sisters if I were to be completely honest, I'd love to hang out with you all, learn ASL and communicate with you two fluently.
SilverFlame819 damn I’ll explain to your again. The reason parent did not learn sign language cause.......it hard for them to learn ASL when they got surprised gift how their child is deaf or HOH. Imagine your child born deaf or become deaf by “accident” how could you deal with it? Can you memorize 16 sign language in one day? No? Well....That’s why parents of deaf children have many years to try memorize sign language.
I have to disagree with what they told Lia, “You’re too pretty to be deaf”, my reason to why I disagree to this is because I’ve met this wonderful and beautiful person, who I hope I could someday become her boyfriend. And the best part about her is that she is deaf and that means she is unique in her own way❤️😍. Even tho I’m not deaf, I am willing to learn ASL for her ❤️
I really like the way, sign language works.... I'm not deaf, but i enjoy learning the sign languange. Keep makes video like this one.it's super entertaining. For real.
I have to read regardless my daughter and husband are both sleeping and my headphones are at another room but wanted to watch/read this.. very educational and inspiring
how does the relation between the grammatical way we form ideas and sentences in written word in english compare to ASL? Quite a few deaf people have said that SEE was confusing to them, so my confusion and intrigue lies in the fact that SEE is designed to have nearly the exact same grammar as the spoken english language, so does READING with the same grammar as SEE present the same problems? or is it the literal vocabulary of SEE that makes it different and sometimes more difficult for deaf people to grasp in comparison to ASL? and if either of those questions are a 'yes', why is one consistently harder as opposed to having some words/grammar in SEE be harder in ASL and other words/grammar in ASL be harder than SEE?
Being deaf can be tough time. I mean I had fun time in school and college but after i graduated from college. I struggling to find job because most of them don't want hire deaf people due safety and communicate issues but i still believe in faith that i will find job.
I love sign, I know a good amount. I just struggle with ASL and I use SEE. I love learning new signs every day. The only thing is my reception sucks sometimes. I have to ask deaf ppl to slow down xD I cannot sign that fast or understand that fast!!!!

I wish they taught ASL more in schools, they do have it in one school in my district but it just needs to be more readily available to learn because it’s so critical to understanding people ❤️
Mixxie and Lia have such nice personalities I feel like they'd be really cool if I ever met them!
okay i need to express this: I really like the ppl in this video, they made me realise how much more complex signing is and also how big of a difference it makes (or that there even is one) in changing between ASL and SEE.
Beautiful people, beautiful stories
I felt that when they said 👍🖐✊🤘👊🖖
Inferno ❶ 👉👌 👅✌ 😁
Don’t be like that

Don’t be like that
I would've put the whole video on silence to try to experience what they see when we communicate
I just muted it, music was annoying
I always respect both people who are using American Sign Language (ASL) because they are proud of being Deaf. I really understand them . Who was born Deaf, it is necessary to use ASL signs in order to have great communications with whomever is Hearing or Hard of Hearing. That is essential. Keep being strong and positive! Thanks
I'm deaf but I'm not stupidity
Oh hey, this is pretty cool! The high school I graduated from has an ASL class like 1 2 and 3 I think!
So if a person is timid, will they make fewer facial expressions when using ASL?
i think actually the signs would most likely be smaller or slower, they might even avoid eye contact while signing though it depends on the person. facial expressions are both grammatical and can show different meanings for certain words. generally speaking in deaf culture it's common to be very blunt/straightforward so it's not a common issue! the closest comparison i can think of to lack of facial expressions would be when someone speaks in monotone. it lacks inflection, emotion, or emphasis.
Im lucky enough to go to a school with an integrated deaf program. Im not deaf however they teach everyone the alphabet in elementary, we have classes with deaf students, and in high school you can learn it. Sadly we are one of few schools that do that... we have to have deaf students bussed in from like an hour away because not many other schools have that
Imagen there wouldnt be any music
She's so cute 🥺
Very good video Wish I had more people to sign with when I was growing up
In 20 years I have not seen a video so inspiring and hope giving and astounding. I have just read Oliver Sack's book "Seeing Voices" which blew me away; these videos are miracles. Anyone interested in the history of sign language and the experience of deaf persons would be enriched by Sack's book. Thank you so much you beautiful people !!!!!!
yess Mixxie is back
This is a cool video.
I'm in love with the girl ❤️ she's so cuteeee
Lia seems like someone I'd like to be friends with. She seems hella funny and just 😍
People say when they are born, their life is hard
In reality is us who’s life is gonna be hard
Everyone's life is hard in someway. No matter what it could be worse.
Who else thinks the guy is really cute?!
He is gorgeous! I love me some Mixxie 🥰
i would be scared to leave my house
respect
Why be scared? When its all you have known like that woman it's just natural to them I think ,I know I would be if I suddenly was losing my hearing but if it was all I'd known I think its easier
@@Megasunkiss when you put it that way, but some people gradually grow deaf so in that context, I would be scared,
I became hard of hearing (almost deaf) not so long ago and yeah, going out alone in public is still something I need to get used to. You never know how important is your hearing until you lose it.
I wanna meet that girl she seems like such an awesome person!!!
This is one of the reasons I want to learn ASL ! So many cool people and not enough people know how to communicate with them with their own language!
Beautiful video! Thanks BuzzFeed!
WHY did these parents not learn ASL and start teaching their kids ASL from the very beginning?? I just don't understand people.
SilverFlame819 because they don’t. It hard for them to remember bc they’re in their 20s and 30s than young child who are deaf
@@deafbratzchannel888 What??
SilverFlame819 ? I did explain the reason why parents didn’t do sign language for their child....is that not good enough reason????
@@deafbratzchannel888 Your reason did not make any sense. Perhaps a language barrier?
SilverFlame819 damn I’ll explain to your again. The reason parent did not learn sign language cause.......it hard for them to learn ASL when they got surprised gift how their child is deaf or HOH. Imagine your child born deaf or become deaf by “accident” how could you deal with it? Can you memorize 16 sign language in one day? No? Well....That’s why parents of deaf children have many years to try memorize sign language.
Everyone wants to read but not miss their expressions at the same time. Why is this so hard.
I’m learning BSL instead of ASL, it’s from England as well but it uses facial expression and lip reading like ASL, and some of the words are similar
YES SHES BACK
After I read the title I was waiting for her to talk.
Lia....be my friendd...
Maxxie.....
This is a much better video featuring these two, more detailed & they gave us a bit of their history and the deaf perspective.
They're both so pretty.
how does the relation between the grammatical way we form ideas and sentences in written word in english compare to ASL?
I truly hope to find more videos like this in the future
My son was born deaf. His first language is asl. Awesome vid
I love sign, I know a good amount. I just struggle with ASL and I use SEE. I love learning new signs every day. The only thing is my reception sucks sometimes. I have to ask deaf ppl to slow down xD I cannot sign that fast or understand that fast!!!!
I'm deaf, but I'm not.... hearing anything you're saying.
I deafinitely learned a bit more about it. Nice.
Intentional wordplay or nah?
I would imagine a lot of people see it as being a disability. We are all different, nothing more.
Set side from the actual content... I need to find Lia, she’s so ....😍😍
Claire Alvarez goggle me up and you’ll find me. 😁
Lia Chapman oh my😩😍 i think i just followed your ig😍😍
I’m deaf but i have cochlear implants
Same
I'm not deaf, I don't currently know any deaf people but I *really* want to learn ASL. I have no idea where to do that though
Yeah me too, maybe youtube?
Bill Vicars ask UA-cam
I learned through Bill Vicars and started by watching a bootleg of Spring Awakening
What people are like when you mute them in video games
damn... i respect disability people.. they are more lively than normal people... and it is really really great effort to learn that gesture...
Voice over would be good, I can’t read during to a head injury that’s why I watch UA-cam.
