Everyone saying he should’ve died here??I say NO but it would’ve been a sick twist, Like man I would’ve cried actual tears he’s one of my favorite characters, the ending would’ve been TOTALLY different and everyone and everything would’ve been just SAD. I’m glad he lived, but he also gained a scar like zuko, I’m satisfied with that lol.

I always had a love hate relationship with Mako. I loved his character design, his skills as a bender, the quality of his voice acting, and overall personality but at the same time it was always ruined for me whenever that whole love triangle nonsense was involved. I think due to the majority of his story arcs being revolved around his romantic relationships, he lost a lot of great opportunities for better character development. Even though he did have a good backstory and decent personality, it was very underdeveloped or became less and less developed as the series progressed (but did become more of a likable character). The creators were trying too hard to appeal to the whole romantic aspect of Mako that they honestly screwed him over for the rest of series, and by the last two books they messed up with Mako so bad they couldn't do too much with him in the story overall. They had an idea for him but they handled it so poorly his character suffered because of it.
Book 1: He started off strong with this cool but cold personality, but then the love triangle started up and he started to become very unlikable. He treated Asami terribly after Korra went missing and didn't acknowledge or care for her feelings whatsoever.
Book 2: I really liked the whole police officer arc they did for him in this season. Not going to lie his relationship with Korra was decent from the start but then things took a toxic turn in their relationship, more Korra's fault with her quick temper. If they simply just broke up that would've been fine but then right after they split he gets back together with Asami and doesn't even let Korra know they broke up when she lost her memories, once again hurting Asami in the progress. Not a fan.
Book 3: He wasn't really required all that much in terms of the plot for this season sadly enough, but he did do some plot relevant things though when the Red Lotus got involved. And the whole awkwardness with him being around Korra and Asami was just really uncomfortable. It made the new team Avatar seem not as close as the original because of his past romances. But I did like Mako's character a whole lot more this season.
Book 4: Honestly my favorite version of Mako in all the books. In this season I had really no complaints regarding Mako's personality. You can tell he grew as a person and as a character. Unpopular opinion but I thought him and Wu made a comedic duo. But regarding his sacrifice in the final battle, I personally think he should've been severely injured or lost his arm. It would've made his sacrifice more meaningful.
@Mako U called him frickin ugly that has literally nothing to do with his character. He helped save Wu a ton of times. He helped Wu mature to become a better person and leader
@Mako He had to. If Wu had died Kuvira would have grabbed for power quicker. Without Mako The Earth Kingdom would have still been a monarchy instead of a continent with different countries

For a character that was named after a great voice actor who played Iroh in the first series, they really messed Mako up. And I like Mako too, but I don't like how the creators made him out to be. He had great potential to be this awesome character, and they messed him up💔.
Edit: also, he wasn't involved in much of book 4 which is sad. He really was a side character that was for the most part useless and unnecessary to have, because of his minor role. Maybe that's why they had Mako's sacrifice, to try and make up for his poor involvement, but did this scene do justice? I honestly don't know.
What also sucks with book 4 is that there's hardly any Team Avatar moments. The characters were separate from one another for most of the season, which really kills the spirit of the show.
Mako was at his best in book 1 and 2? what? he was so freaking awful and horrible with asami and even korra, aside from being a cheater. sure he had cool fighting scenes but i like mako better during book 4. i am a mako fan, but are you really trying to say that the worst version of mako was his better one? and are you really saying that he should have let wu die? i mean, if it was not for wu, no matter how useless and annoying he was, kuvira would have taken full power and that’s it. korra would still be recovering and would not be able to stop her, i’m sure of it. and of course he was not so important in book 4, the season was all about korra after all. and what is the problem with his design? do you really part-hate him just because his hair is not like book 1-3?
People hate Mako for being in the love triangle more than they hate Korra for kissing him while he had a girlfriend, which neither of them apologised to Asami for. Then they forget Korra was the crazy one in their relationship. Then they forget Asami made the jump to HIM after he and Korra broke up.
Mako did fuck up a lot, I'll be honest. The only one who played it right, or at least the best, was Asami.

Very time i hear this music or watch the scene i legit burst out in tears it was so emotional and badass and overall one of the best scenes in The Legend Of Korra.
I was underwhelmed the first time I saw this scene (mostly bc Mako's role in season 4 was otherwise so minimal); viewed holistically, really makes me appreciate Mako as a character (in terms of strength and development).
I swear all these commenters want Mako dead

jeremy zuckerman does that with korra music; he puts bits of music in from atla because korra and aang have the same spirit and soul. it's pretty genius if you ask me.

Honestly this part is my fav
Mako is more fire nation anyway so it fits so well, also the way he generated the lightning like how Azula and Iroh did was epic

Mako deserved so much more development in the series...

this is my favorite scene probably in the show. mako's character development is shown, the music and the visuals make the scene though.

i think if they killed off mako there, it would be a perfect death scene. the build up, the tension, the music, the chills and the last thing that bolin said to mako is too perfect. even his animation on that scene looks more polished than before. if that happens, it would be more emotional. i mean i got tears watching that scene already
Agreed, but the biggest problem is that the show wouldn’t end with Verrick’s wedding... the show would have had to end on a funeral instead.

Yep. Can’t have a sad ending for a show like this. Either way, Mako got a good ending in Season 4. He was a vital part in the defeat of Kuvira, clears up the tensions between him and the rest of Team Avatar, found his place in the world (detective and friend) and most importantly, became willing to sacrifice himself for the lives of others whereas before it was just “him and his brother vs the world” mentality. Plus he now has great music to his name.
The entire time I was like there’s no way they’re actually going to kill him this is so beautifully done. I completely would have understood killing him off. But it also made sense having Bolin come back for Mako, after everything that had happened to them both there’s no way he was going to leave his brother behind.
Mako dying in this scene would've been a great end to his character. But it would've broke Bolin and seeing that he's my favorite member of the KorraKrew, that would've hurt to see. This was still a great scene, but if Mako actually died here, it would've been my favorite scene of the whole show

I really don't understand the hate on Mako's character. He's awesome and his lightbending skills are superior to any other character in the whole Avatar series. Remember when he killed Ming Hua? He didn't even need to charge the lightning.
Apart from his love triangle thing (wich I honestly love but people hate that) and the fact that he cheated on Asami (a low point for his character), he was always supportive and a good guy. He treated Korra damn well, she was the toxic in their relationship. He got a good character development: he started in pro-bending searching for money and caring only about him and Bolin, and then ended sacrificing his self. He shouldn't have died. They did the right thing. I just wish he got more badass scenes like this over the series to show everyone his good bending skills. But honestly, he's a perfect character

Here let me remind you why: The writers made this character be a two timing cheater who wanted to abuse his ex-girlfriend's amnesia to pretend that they never broke up thus cheating on his new girlfriend and abusing his old girlfriend's medical condition!!
That is what the writers wrote for a character that was orphaned, had to protect his brother, and basically had to fight and scratch for anything in this world.
And the writers thought that a character with that backstory needed to be an immature jerk and cheater...

I don't know why but I think I would have like seeing Mako die. Not because I don't like him (cuz I do) but the gravity of the situation would have made the ending more realistic (I mean it was a giant robot for goodness sake!) IDK I think seeing Mako's funeral would have made it a better end, remembrance and pushing forward. And all you Mako fans, please don't hate, I love Mako's character this is just how I feel.

On one hand I'm glad they didn't kill Mako because it would've made the finale depressing af, but GODDAMN would it have been so emotional and a hell of a way to go for Mako.
I don't say this out of anger or hate, but Mako shoulda died in his sacrifice; because it would have made an impact, on the characters, arcs and show in general. Think of this, Mako made a promise to Bolin to come back safely, but in his mind he knew he couldn't, so he does the one thing he can think of, sacrifice himself to save others. Its not an original trope but its one that can really make, and seldom break a character. Makos sacrifice would change the show in a very interesting way, better or worse is up to the imagination
Would it though? I feel like the events would have more or less panned out the same, regardless of his death. Sure the characters would react to his death and it may develop them somewhat, but would it worth killing off Mako? After all, there are ways to develop plot/characters other than deleting existing characters. Not to mention, as you said, its a trope used by everyone these days and LoK has self-sacrifice moments like this every season, which sometimes resulted in death.
Love this track and I loved this scene. Visually it's one of my favorite scenes from Book 4 because of the colors.
Going through the comments, it feels kind of mean to jump on the "Mako should have died" train, so I'm just gonna say that this moment should have either been A) built up more in the plot throughout Book 4; or B) felt like it had more narrative consequence for Mako. We see him get hurt and knocked out, but he was fine and walking around not too long after and could even extend his injured arm out for a group hug in the end. And arm injury aside, it looked like he was struck right through the heart! They could have at least committed to the death fakeout more and have a sad moment with everyone over his body where we (and they) really think he died before Korra heals him. That or him losing his arm would have been pretty devastating as well but still have him survive. It would also mirror Korra's experiences at the end of Book 3. Or at least have him lose his firebending/lightningbending in said arm (and not for like a few weeks as it happened in the comics).
I don't think he should have died (poor Bolin!), I just think this could have been a much better defining character moment for him, and I say this as someone who actually really liked him from the show. Hoping he gets proper character development somehow in the comics. :)
Sadly the comics focused more on Korra and Asami. He didn't shine that much. Sadly there has been 3 years without new LOK comics, but Avatar studios is working on multiple series at the time. The best we can do is spamming them through Twitter or Instagram or trying to trend #BRINGBACKKORRA. They only pay attention to Aang at this point but we are here and we want a continuation for this series
In the Comics Mako still has a nasty scar on his left arm and he can no longer firebend with that arm, despite multiple healing attempts.
Guys, it doesn’t matter if mako died in this scene. The emotional impact is the fact that he did it, fully prepared and willing to die

Imagine Mako could not destroy the heart with his lightnings, and then he sees like memories of bolin , korra , asami ect. , what empowers his lightning so much, that he wouldve destroyed it, and also died to it.

Why do you guys want Mako dead? I personally think that he should’ve lost an arm or forever lost his bending on it, but death? No. Hiroshi died that same episode, and it would’ve made the ending of The Legend of Korra seem incredibly rushed. So, I don’t think he should’ve died in this scene, but just severely injured his arm.
They did NOTHING with Mako and Bolin after this series. If you look at the comics that the writers of this show wrote: Bolin and Mako could have been replaced with any other characters.
If you aren't planning on doing anything with a characters because you just don't like them, then let them die in a blaze of glorious purpose. It will make their character much more loved because the fans can only imagine what he could have done. (The fans don't have to know that you had nothing planned for character)
Anyone remember when Jet was killed off? Did anyone think that that was a mistake or bad for his character? No, everyone remembers Jet as a tragic freedom fighter who died for the right cause. His death impacted the main cast and made the audience feel the stakes of the story.

No, Mako does not die in "The Legend of Korra." Despite the dangerous situation where he overcharges the spirit energy core in Kuvira's mecha suit, he survives the explosion thanks to Bolin, who comes back to rescue him. Mako is injured but alive at the end of the series.
