As a fellow female vet (US Army), this makes me proud. Military trained us well. Esp with firearms we had to demonstrate expert mastery. It was in the assailant's best interest to take her seriously.

I was in the military. We did not have to demonstrate “expert mastery.” Most of the women barely passed and had to retake the test multiple times. All you had to do was get a certain amount of shots on a life size silhouette from 30’ to pass the test. And we did security.

As a fellow vet, I can say that stories like this make me proud. But, I am also sad that this happened as she said in America. When we train, it is with the idea of fighting an enemy outside our borders, not within them.

Louisiana once passed a law allowing you to shoot a carjacker. Obviously that is only if he actually manages to get into the car. Not sure if the law still exists.

@@maddumass I grew up in NW Indiana, I could literally walk to the South Side of Chicago. I commuted to the Loop for twenty years and saw plenty of awful neighborhoods. However, I was never as repulsed, frightened, saddened, ??? as when when husband and I took a wrong turn somewhere in Philly about 20 years ago on vacation. I think we were on 30 and ended up somewhere on a brick lined street and old rail tracks running down it. I remember thinking our Founding Fathers must be turning in their graves. Other than that, it was great vaca in PA.

Got robbed at gunpoint when I was 16. That was the turning point that taught me so early that life can be over so fast. Aside from the nightmares, Its hard to go anywhere or do anything since without being very aware of my surroundings at all times. Been carrying since. Rather fight than be a statistic on a board somewhere.

But doing what this woman did by being able to point the gun and to not shot, that's courage and that's impressive. She knows how loud that sound of shooting from within the car would be and I'm pretty sure that's something she thought off considering her baby was in the car.

As a Vet I think she's absolutely correct! When I'm driving around my city I'm watching corners, rooftops, and for road blocks, jump outs etc. When traffic comes to a stand still I look for the best routes to evade. It's weird to feel like I'm in a conflict area.
Not relevant to driving, but I tried to advise somebody to get in the habit of knowing where the back door is in any establishment you walk into. Bars, banks, church...
That's why when I get in backed up traffic I always leave enough space between the front of my car and the back of the car in front of me. This gives me just enough space to get out of the backup in a situation like this if needed.

I'm with you. Whenever in traffic, always look for a possible escape route. At a traffic light when stopped, always be at least a car length behind the driver in front. Never line up directly behind a car when stopped, always at a slight angle if you have to get out in a hurry. These are simple actions that were learned in a real defensive driving class for women. I took this class in 1988...who knew?
