    there is some confusion with model numbers from Baofeng. mine is labeled AR-5RM and included a BF-5RH manual lol (BF-5RH is only dual band). it came completely unlocked out of the box- the first thing I did was plug it into chirp and flashed GMRS and MURS frequencies and it transmitted on them just fine. the features that really do it for me are usb charging (finally!) and the frequency counter. great feature for setting up group radios and frs sets. I really can't believe you can get a completely unlocked radio that covers so many bands for $25. the criticism I've heard of this radio is that there are some spurious emissions on VHF that exceed the FCC specs, and I think I speak for most when I say- who cares lol. great overview

      The USB-C charging is definitely a big plus. Opens up a ton of options

      Howdy. Does the AR-5RM still have the red text in the menu? I have red text on my uv-5rh and I have trouble reading that color also.

    Above everything else, the USB charging and AM aviation bands sold me on this as an upgrade to my UV-5R and UV-5X3. I don't expect BaoFeng to put the money into the required hardware changes but I really wish we could get USB programming as well and ditch the proprietary radio cables. However I found one MAJOR downgrade from the 5X3 and that's the ability to set channels for skip during scan via the radio itself rather than requiring CHIRP to do it. If you're in an area with a noisy channel or one with interference it gets annoying while scanning and not being able to temporary set it to skip like you can on the 5X3.

    • @Commodium
      @Commodium  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes having the skip function is nice when scanning for sure

      I've found using a Bluetooth radio programmer and their companion app to solve this particular issue. I use a tidradio BL-1 and odmaster app. But I can't see why it can't be implemented on the radio itself

    Sorry, we find the microphone earpiece invaluable for hunting. The group operates at a whisper. We keep the noise in the woods as clean as we keep the campsite.

    • @Commodium
      @Commodium  6 місяців тому

      @bulldogbrower6732 No need to for sorry. I certainly agree with what you said. It's not the idea of the earpiece, I just wish the build quality was a little better. I have a set of noise cancelling headphones with a PTT mic I plug into which is great for hunting. The headphones have ambient sound amplification which is a bonus too. I know for the price point they can only do so much, but I would rather they either upgrade the ear/mic combo or use that cost for extra radio features.

    • @greyshadow9498
      @greyshadow9498 5 місяців тому +1

      I wouldn't trust the earpiece for too long. Spend $10 and get a air acoustic earpiece (the "fed" earpiece) and a set of earmold or over ear earpieces. Something that doesn't block the entire ear canal.
      They also generally have much better wiring and better PTT switch

      PTT, VFO, MON button press while turning on power *may* do a factory reset. The word “factory” will be displayed on the screen. Not all firmware versions support this. It is also possible with CHIRP software on certain firmware version radios as well.

      I like em. As far as a cheap radio goes, they are pretty nice. Don’t know if I would bet my life on them in combat, but for average use with average abuse they hold up ok

    I have a couple of baofengs, and when I decided to document the serial numbers of all my radios, I can't seem to find a serial on my baofengs. Am I just missing it, is it inside the case? Or are they making millions of these without serial numbers?

    • @Commodium
      @Commodium  5 місяців тому +2

      My UV5-Rs have it printed on the the label on the radio body under the battery. It's a barcode printed toward the bottom. My 5RMs have no serial number printed. So it appears they may or may not include a serial number with every unit. And honestly I never even looked for one before you posted this question. Learn something new everyday!

    • @Commodium
      @Commodium  Місяць тому

      You would need to know the frequency and times of local nets in your area. Ham clubs generally post that information on their website. And of course these nets would have to be in the frequency ranges the radio is capable of.

    Is the stock antenna good? I cant seem to find upgrade antennas for these. Only for the uv5r models..

    • @Commodium
      @Commodium  6 місяців тому +6

      The stock antenna it comes with is not bad. It has more sensitivity in the UHF/GMRS bands than in VHF. And it is an improvement over the stock UV5R. **Any antenna that is compatible with the UV5R will work with the 5RM.** The Nagoya 771 is decent, the Abbree 42.5 inch is an excellent performer with the 5RM, but almost cartoony in length. We have antennas in development that will be for sale soon. They are custom-designed and tuned specifically for triband handhelds. A video on them will be out soon.

    • @Draknfyre
      @Draknfyre 4 місяці тому +1

      Antennas are not model-specific, but connector-specific. As long as it has a female SMA connector you can use it. When I got my 5RM I took my Nagoya 24J off my UV-5X3 and put it right on.

      Remember they are rules not laws. Also with the recent Chevron ruling from the Supreme Court they ruled these agencies can't make laws. Do as you will, the government doesn't own the air.
