I just need to make a comment or two on this radio. I've been a scanner enthusiast for some 45 years and I must say this radio is out performing some of the higher end ht's I've owned. The reception is full quieting, and I'm receiving police and fire signals from areas that I ordinarily would not. When I purchased the radio I primarily wanted it as a scanner and quite frankly for the 30 dollar price tag its sooo worth it in my opinion.
73's
HI. Can FM-N be used on the entire radio band?? For example on 70 MHz? Ciao.
In other reviews the scan feature is said to determine the frequency of your buddy standing next to you. It was not Intended to get the tone transmitted by a nearby repeater.
It appears to be attenuated when searching to decode the CTSS/DCS codes. It won’t work with repeaters
Thats all its intended for, easily programming radios next to you. Not sure your misunderstanding of the feature constitutes a bad review. I use it to quickly add FRS radios on non 0 PL's.
@@user-zy6ou4ux6p, you are clearly incapable of comprehending why the reviewer did not care for the radio. It was a very easy to understand review. Hmm, you should return to third grade. Boy.
Some radios are equipped with a reverse repeater function that flips in/out frequencies. This would allow you to clone a friend's repeater frequencies and settings on this BF. Other than the harmonics (which is a deal breaker) it's not a useless radio. If they fixed filtering like they seemed to on their other radios, it wouldn't be a bad radio.
The manual makes no mention as to what it's for or the distance it works at. It just says it can do it.
He just sold me the radio because of the frequency counter.
These are great radios. Don't listen to this guy
Glad to see this isn't another "Yep it's dirty. Click the link below to purchase one with my affiliate link"
Not everyone uses the radio the same, pipe down
For under $40 I will definitely buy this it over 5v that fantastic
It's good for what it is.
i got one. all 5RM i found was ranged 8W,says on the back under the battery on my 5RM as well 8W max.. and it works great, and the green scan works great. i was outside a big mall and picked up their radios with green button freq counter
I just bought 2. After watching this.
For $30 it's still a cheap gateway into the hobby.
Just ordered, paid $27 for mine, added an upgraded antenna too.
The green button isn't meant as a scan feature; it's meant to determine the tones of a radio that is very close to you and not using a repeater. Meant more for people who are using mixed radio brands and no one knows if/how their radio is set up or if they have tones enabled.
That sounds like a great feature.
Lake Placid Repeater - You aren't accounting for the offset. It is working as intended. The freq you scanned for was the +0.6 difference for 2m.
This dude puts the "amateur" in amateur license! It didn't look like he cal'dl his SA or add the -16db to his harmonics test. He might want to learn what the difference between harmonics and ""spurious emissions" are also. Amazing how someone can pass a multiple choice test and become an Electrical Engineer.
I also watched Ham-Solo's field test review video of this same radio and decide to buy one! Amazing!
Just watched it today! I bought two!
Bought one for the advertised features too. Did you test at low power? I bet most Chinese high power Baofeng based HTs have spurious emissions. Taco Bell causes emissions too at about the same price or less 😂
😂❤
Awesome that it operates in the 220's you can get a yagi antenna and use it to track telemetry collars
Actually using the radio to talk and receive on the Amateur Bands is a winner. The audio is clear and much improved on the UV-5R. You should actually try using the radio.
He needs to read the instructions first that's if he can understand and comprehend them.
😂
UV5R radios were discontinued per Baofeng website. The website states that the next model up, the BF-F8HP, which is 8 watts, is the new replacement for UV5R. The BF-F8HP is a better radio than UV5R with twice the wattage but costs a little more.
Well the BF-F8HP came out years ago and the UV5R sells like hotcakes so I kinda doubt that info is true.
It's true because I couldn't order from BF website, and that's the info posted on BF website.@hamradiotube
You shouldn't print fake news and mis information on this kind of website. You should know better than this to keep up with the most updated information.@@hamradiotube It appears anyone can open up a website and make false claims. 👎🤢🤮
The BF8-HP has nowhere near double the wattage. I have 2. Even if you got 4w out of a 5r, you're not getting 8w from the BF8-HP. Not happening.
@@microminiskirt UV-5R dirt cheap from Aliexpress, arrives in 5 days here in the UK.
I read some comments and I have searched online, can anyone confirm that you can disable transmitting on this radio and just use it as a basic scanner? I understand this may require the USB cable and using software. If anyone can confirm this I'd appreciate it and if you have any tips in regards to doing it I'd love to hear them!
Yes you can with chirp. Rx only
For all I and many others love the uv5r for I think the quansheng with a modified firmware is an insane first ht
How much attenuation did you use?
Looks like an issue with the screen backlighting, not covering the full screen area towards the bottom. I must have been lucky. The BF-5RH/UV-5RH has a Black Background with White digits, very easy to read. perhaps there is some variance between models as to which type/colour of screen one gets.
Thanks for the video Mike!
There are a few, very confusing variations of this radio. I have the UV-5RM that was just recently released, tri-band, 8W, looks identical to the UV-5RH and the 5RM (without the UV).
Thankfully the UV-5RM (2024 model, not to be confused with the older and different looking 2015 variant) does not seem to be so messy on spectrum.
I have one it's cool to have 3 bands and 999 channels can any recommendations for this kidna radio
I like this radio! Completely unlocked and allows me to monitor airport communications and so much more. Forget all of the tests, this radio can do it all. And multiple emergency contacts too. I can transmit on almost everything! With fcc approval too.
No, it's not a perfect radio, but it allows the freedom most everyone wants.
Yep. This was the cheapest radio I found that could monitor airport traffic. It also has FM radio broadcast reception with one touch key selection. Plus plenty of memory to store frequently used bands for anywhere I may go, it was an immediate purchase.
@@DougSims Literally almost every radio has these features lol
i got both antennas with mine. it picks up air band clear. the green search button worked on mine from 500m away.
Really? I got screwed. Oh well, I sent it back.
Your wrong on the scanning and use of the green button. Works as advertised. You need to fix this review.
If that's the case, Baofeng needs to re-write their manual.
WHAT MANUAL MINE DIDNT COME WITH ONE@@hamradiotube
Bro I have one of these and I love it.
Thanks for this review. I have several UV-5R variants that all work well.
I bought 8 of these, all dirty on VHF but clean on UHF.
Yeah 8.8 magnitude as well
Hmmmmmm, thanks for this, what is the range on that “scan” function?
I haven't tested that and the manual makes no reference to it either.
Yeah would be nice to know. I wonder if it's as good as unidens close call feature 🤔
Can someone please help me figure out how to program my radios. I can't figure out how to get all of the features. I can get any frequency that l want but that is it. THANKS, JOE
Look at chirp
i was close to cops while they were on there radios and got there channels
Can you use it to scan the airband?
baofeng will never be a waste of money. cos its priced the same as a uv 5r. all the features are free. how much would a yaesu cost for those features. lol
I love this radio, so much more than my quansheng. It seems to do much better on transmit and receive and tri-band i don't have to mess with it. Plus it has the AM receive.
Are any of the UV-5 series a worthwhile purchase?
I saw your video late and bought it... :( any way to improve an update??
Will this be able to pick up encrypted frequency?? I listen to nypd and they switched to encrypted and there is one person who has this radio that you are reviewing and claims that it works with picking up the encrypted frequency. Im trying to do my own research before paying way too much money for one when I can just do it myself. Greatly appreciated with your help with this question
I have the gmrs version (UV-5G plus)…it works fine.
Red on blue background... which came first, Xiegu or Baofeng?
Maybe the scan function is for finding listening devices
Can this be jail broken to access gmrs frequencies? This seems like a better option than the gmrs version per the Ham capability also. Please let me know if anyone has knowledge on this.
It already can. No "jailbreaking" required
Dang... This is right after I bought the UV-5RM... but you mentioned the UV-5R lines are good?
This is the only Baofeng anyone needs. And it's less than $20. amzn.to/4aCaBZo
How far do the spurious emissions travel? Six blocks?
50 feet
🤔 It depends what you mean by "how."
I like the 5rm. I do not like the way the flap over the connector swings. The standard uv5r was perfect. It opened and was covered by the plug. Clean no snag sttatchment. The battery keeps pooping out with the slightest impact. Not a fan of the antenna. I have a 2 pack and one was compleatly broken from the start. The emissions on mine are not bad. Abree ar771 seems to be great on them.
Thank you!
what effect do spurious emissions have?
If you transmit on non ham frequencies and interfere with users licensed on those frequencies, you will get a notification from the FCC and possibly a fine.
Are they good for fire department to use as backup radios
No
The green button = 【One Key Frequency Match】The ham radio has a one-touch frequency matching function, easy pairing and grouping(Copying channel configuration parameters). Convenient for you and your partner to set up quickly. It's not described in the operations manual as a scanner for repeaters.
The antenna is just OK. I use the {Authentic Genuine Nagoya NA-320A Triband HT Antenna 2M-1.25M-70CM (144-220-440Mhz)} on my Triband Baofeng radios.
The 5rm is advertised as an 8 watt Tx but 7.8 watt is the best I've seen... so close enough.
One thing that I don't understand... sometimes when I choose a repeater's frequency it will automatically set the off-set and tone (code) but other repeaters I must lookup and set manually. I'm not going to offer a guess why. I've only had my Technician license for a few weeks (so I'm still learning)
I just got a UV21R $29 and it is great!!
UNDERSTOOD!! :D i bought the BAOFENG UV17BK - 73, Levi in Sweden
I just got mine and used it on the local repeater for 45 minutes with no issues. I really like it, for the price I think it's pretty good. Only issue is when transmitting, be careful to not touch the battery contacts or tu pull get an RF burn. But that's common with these cheap radios.
I have one. It's great! I paired it up with a better antenna, and it's fantastic.
The only downside so far is that I haven't been able to get odmaster to work with it, so I've been stuck with CHIRP.
Thank you for the info!!!!
all 5RM i found was ranged 8W , says on the back under the battery on my 5RM as well 8W max.. and it works great, and the green scan works great. you might got a clone
QUANSHENG is the radio to get. Respected programers around the world are creating awesome programs that improve the ability of this radio exponentially.
💯
I have one and am very happy with it.
For listening it looks to be a nice entry equipment.
UV-5RH Pro Max is good?
I feel like I have to review this video because I think you are being to picky about this device.
To be honest I have 2 of those that I got for tha same price and for 37 dollars you get here a lot especially this have usb c charging and I don't have any problems copying any other device in any frequency.
I work in high-rise building and this device works well in 60-70 floors buildings and if a new subcontractors comes to work I am very easily copy the frequency in there device to be in touch.
So it promises 10w and you only get 7w so what .
If this would have cost 100 dollars I can understand the review but fo 37 dollars you get here a lot.
Thank you. Now, I can sleep peacefully. I knew, something was off in its design
Thank you 😮
Thank you mike
Thanks Mike! 🤝The Quasheng UV-5(8) is the hot soup dujour and all the rage right now with the multiple firmware updates and custom mods.
Soup Du Jour, what's that? That's the soup of the day. Mmm, that sounds yummy, I'll have that.
@@hamradiotube Lloyd Christmas ordering soup like a boss
I hear its flat with no bubbles @@hamradiotube
Wow, this Bf UV-5R Max radio is AMAZING. It works as it should🤩👍.
Bought it as a scanner for a friend. Works awesome
For 30$ all I need is for it to transmit and receive with pl and dcs tones and the splits, the receive couldn't be worse than the 5rv - so I'm definitely upgrading in a few days. Thanks 🙄
The advertisements I saw showed that green button with another radio next to it, so you could "match your friend's radio." To be fair, that's what they seem to be selling (without any documentation, even in Chinglish).
Thanks for the review, that screen outdoors is enough of a detriment for me.
Can these be unlocked to use on GMRS?
they ship unlocked for gmrs. there is a vid on my channel using this radio on gmrs
Why be incomplete and sloppy with testing? Some folk do care about 220 and many of us are looking for decent 220 radios. Also why not test for spurious emissions on 220 and 440 as well? (Btw another UA-camr finally tested 440 and it seems pretty clean there.)
I got this as soon as they came out. Mines picks up my local repeaters and other random frequencies being used. I wonder if you just got a defective one. Anyone else’s working fine?
Could be. I'm sending mine back. Maybe I'll order another one and see.
Good review buddy, almost bought one lol! 😮💨 Thank you.
subbed to your channel by the way.
Thanks so much!
Thanks Mike, already bought it, a bit late on the video!!!!😂
Oof!
@@hamradiotube Not a bad receiving radio for just listening to weather and other listening.
It is going to be a LONG time before any company out therein the world HT market will knock the UV5R from the top spot. lets face it, you can add all the sales worldwide of HT radios and the UV5R still out sells everything else.
Interesting but another Tuber tested the 5Rm against a Vx-76 and the Yaesu was dirtier. I have the 5RM for a month know, tested and clean and all of the functions perform as advertised. Please do a follow up video testing your Yaesu against that terrible Baofeng.
Am bands can we recieve cb ?
They will clean it up; actually not a bad radio... have you even tried using to communicate?
Probably not. 😂
Ugh. I’m so disappointed. I just bought 2 of these and I love the features. I guess I’ll send them back. I want a triband radio with airband receive. What do you think about the TIDRadio H3? I saw it passed the test in your stream with Smokin Ape.
The H3 is actually a pretty neat radio.
@@hamradiotube do you prefer the H8 or the H3? I’m trying to decide more power and bigger vs 220, air band receive and smaller.
@@KempOutside More power would be the least of my concerns. I'm kinda digging the H3 right now. It's a little bit smaller than a UV-5R. It also charges and programs with USB-C
@@hamradiotube thanks for helping me decide!
@@hamradiotube hey Mike, one more question if you don’t mind. Can you press different keys when you power the radio on to boot the radio as GMRS, HAM or open like the H8? Thanks!
I just bought 2 UV 5G+ for GMRS and am very happy with the radios…
Thank you for your honest opinion, greetings from bogota colombia / Gracias por tu opinion tan honesta, saludos desde bogota colombia
Lol... Already bought it... But thanks for testing it out. It's GMRS branded sister got high marks, figured it was the same radio. Guess not.
Thank you Michael I almost bought one thank you for the warning❤
bro...the radio is fine.
Is it locked for GMRS?
No. Program in chirp
thanks for saving me the money and headache
Thanks 😊
I believe you have until the end of January to return items bought in December. I'd return it.
Now that’s a good idea. Can’t believe I didn’t even think about that. It’s sitting in my closet lol!
It could have been a contender.
FYI JUST WORKS FINE TO ME I HAVE NO ISSUES YET I REALLY LOVE THIS RADIO
Thanks
Thanks for taking one for the team, Mike! Mental note to stay away from the Boof Wangs! 😁
It's like the Quansheng and Baofeng had a baby.
So are you saying that unlike the older Amateur/Ham radios you can't peak and tune the radio to work properly? I've known some elder radio operators that either knew a gut or can do it themselves would take a crap radio jus peak and tune it and bam wtf it works properly. Plus I've also learned aftermarket parts tend to be better than the original.
I'm a new HAM with a uv5r and just added a magmount antenna to the car which made a huge difference. The microphone speaker is terrible. Any suggestions for an alternative? I'm told my receive audio is very low.
Retevis makes a decent one. Look for the ones that have thick cord support. It's similar to the Bridgecom hand mics.
The deal is the 2 band UV-5R has sort of Usable VHF Tx Low Pass Filter that does knock Down the 3rd Harmonic (The Uhf 70cm Band) Tx harmonics almost Good enough.....Problem is, When Bofang builds their Tri--Band (220--260 MHz) it Lets the 2 Meter Vhf 2nd Harmonic get Out with almost No filtering.....In some units, the Low power Setting 2 meter Vhf Leaks an even Stronger 2nd Harmonic thru to Antenna....Bofang, being real Stingy with Any Tx Filtering to Start with Really blew it with Tri--Band & Created a Vhf 2nd Harmonic Tx Monster !!
A 10 watt ht will just melt the pa super fast.
Thanks.
I tried a Baofeng radio but it was so hard to manually program that I gave it away. Then, two things happened to change my mind and the Baofeng UV-5R is now my favorite HT radio. It didn't have the spurious emissions problem AND I discovered the Chirp programming software. Chirp was a game changer for me. I have HT's with Fusion and HT's with D-STAR for world-wide clear connections but those systems are so good that it has the same lack of thrill as using a telephone. Boring! I don't care about either of those systems. Amazingly, I'm very happy with the UV-5R now that I can program it with Chirp and do what I enjoy the most. And, at under $30, who cares if it gets lost or stolen? Another $30 and a quick repeater/simplex restore from Chirp and I'm back in bidness! -KK5DON
Agree. CHIRP is a game changer with the UV-5R series.
Right after posted the above message, I found where a UV-5R is selling for $18! Complete with an earpiece with a PTT button! I think it was on Amazon. How could I not get a couple of them? I call them my 'throw-down' HT's!
I had the same problem trying to program the uv-9g, chirp changed the game
I have two that work fine. Very strong on 70 cm repeaters. Baofeng haters gonna hate, but we already know that.
hi, with respect to your opinion i reject the conclusion from my point of view. i bought the identical twin of yours, the uv-5rh v.1, which operates very fine on almost every frequency even with a home made flower pot antenna...i can copy any frequency and tone from nearby devices, i can rx the aviation, 2500mah battery is more than ok, it feels fine in hand, well made in many ways. the power in high mode is around 8 watts. what else to expect? the only thing i may complain is the red color fonts in the menu. a bit hard to read in broad day light. in comparison to my other radios, i may call it my new favorite budget radio. it deserves every dollar spent. may yours be a counterfeit unit? a fake one? or mine is a lucky seed?
Ok
I’m waiting for the GT-5RM then 😂
