As an undiagnosed adult, I used to never think I could be autistic because of the way media portrayed autistic people. But about 2 years ago, youtube randomly suggested a video of someone talking about autism to me. And it just clicked, like this person is describing me. At first I figured it was all in my head. Then over the next year some thing happened in real life that got me thinking about it again, my past, and I started researching it more. Eventually I started accepting I'm probably autistic, but don't care to be formally diagnosed. There are a lot of great channels on youtube with supporting content for autism. Long story short, I totally agree that autism portrayals in media is usually bad. Also, I've never been good at romantic relationships, because of what you quoted around 4:40 about "We all work out until I stop acting." I never managed to successfully navigate that transition when I was younger, and eventually I just stopped trying. With platonic friends it was always much easier to stop acting, because I didn't feel compelled to be around them when I was incapable of masking at least a little. With romantic partners, even as a guy, it just felt like there was too much pressure to always be perfect, and I'm not always perfect, happy, funny. etc.
As someone who’s Autistic I Understand what you mean I hate how tv shows make every Autistic person look Like a Genius it’s annoying It’s why I never cared to watch tv shows like that
As guy on spectrum I have my moments of genius. It's really just pattern recognition. I just see things other don't sometimes then point them out. Sometime that results in me appearing to be a genius. I'm not of course.
Can you love him when he's not in hero/sigma mode? Can you love her when she's not in pixie/princess mode? That is the question... Too much self-modifying, too much self-effacing, makes the heart grow colder ☃
I just found your channel and I really like what you talk about and relate to a lot of it. Ihave a series rec, I just watched a show in netflix called Geek Girl. The main character is called harriet and she has so many autistic traits and she has this nice conversation with a friend about feeling different and not fitting in. I enjoyed it and liked the inner monologues she had, she was bullied but had a nice friend group and it was positive and uplifting. I watched atypical too but mostly like the sister casey. most media about autistic people have these overbearing parents and are hard to relate to. but geek girl was good. Also Anne with an E, i really feel like she is autistic and or has adhd. i relate to her too. Have a good one! :)
Two shows that I think have a somehow better representation are: Absolute beginners (polish series) Heartbreak high I agree with you many media representations neglect all the struggles we face as well as the the hardships trying to fit in, for me as a high masking adult only through realistic portrayals I managed to understand who I am!
Ouhh how interesting, I love how some of the comments are doing little recommendations, we are starting our own watchlist hehehe!! Much love to you and thanks for being here, I appreciate it my dear!!
I feel like the manic pixie dream girl is always being chased by some guy who wants her to save him and I’m like leave her alone and go to therapy 🤨 she has her own problems to deal with lol
have you seen the show Derry Girls? the character Orla McCool was odd (and I think had a lot of autistic traits) and that was not "redeemed" by any intelligence or a man to fix etc. It is a really good show and I would love to hear your take on it.
Ouhh how nice, it's cool to see a quirky character being well a quirky character! I did not see it however sooo sorry but I trust your insight, thanks a lot for watching!!
