I'm in Tommy's camp liking the Rivian styling a little better than Tesla's (especially the Cybertruck concept!!!). Pretty impressive performance from the Rivian. I'll miss gas engine vehicles, but I'm excited with what EVs are already doing.

What else would to expect specially since the fresh Rivian was not his.. Roman got his farting ass kicked so bad overall.. It is exactly what i was expected (after Rivian did announced the specs) and this is all i asked since i first saw Rivian truck official reviews and other tests made so far crossing thru deep 90cm (roughly ~3 feet) of water, riding up on rocky mountain-trails and now head to head with other beast of ice trucks. Rivian break the ice for ev-pick-up trucks.. what Raptor ? what RAM-T-Rex ? what Tesla Y-performance ? Rivian R1T > is the GOAT ! The all-around vehicle to do it all very good : on road & off-road. So, yeah i did like it from the moment it spun out inside-out but now, i just love it even more than anything else.. initially i was interested by Jaguar i-Pace (another super awesome cool ev-SUV which costs about roughly same price as Rivian) but after watching this 0-60 in 3:64.. Rivian definitely is much quicker than Jag i-Pace has way more cargo space practicality & versatility inside and on both trunks, bigger battery capacity, better towing because it has 4 independent electric motors for same price ?!.. overall on all aspects is better. So yeah, (Cybertruck might be the Supreme-One on all specs & price but on looks it didn't strike me that much (and who knows when it will be out), the GMC Hummer ev does also look cool but with rear steering 'crab-walk' is a cool feature but it might be even heavy than R1, which means greater energy consumption and another steering rack to fix on long term owning (might translate in future more expensive maintaining costs), Ford F-150 lightning might be more affordable but is far too common & industrial.. again not bashing anyone but boy the Rivian-truck fill so many boxes inside-out & all-round.. I like it so much now that i really do consider order it. ;0)

Would love to see you all build a 1/8 or 1/4 mile drag strip on your ranch. This track is too small for vehicles this fast.

When Roman said the RT1 looks like "hungry hippo" is when the lightbulb came on! He hit the nail on the head! I knew it looked like something but could not put my finger on it! Other than the signature headlights on them, I'm a fan of Rivian.
It’s pretty incredible how well executed the Rivian seems for being a brand new car mfg.

Yeah this track is way too short now, that’s the only reason the Rivian won, because the TRX didn’t have a chance to catch up due to the track being so short.

2 passes on that short track and the EV ws down 2% battery. Doesn't boast well for having range to me.

One of the funniest auto commercials I've ever seen I don't remember the make or models but there was a family on vacation driving a sedan up a hill on a highway simply driving nice and quiet. Inside of the car they were playing games amongst themselves without a care in the world having fun and then it switched to an aggressive sports car who's two occupants were flooring it and doing everything they could to race. It cuts back to the family not having a clue that the car was trying to catch them and it was the funniest commercial I've ever seen. This kind of reminded me of that. Quiet luxurious mid-sized truck against gas guzzling loud full size supercharged off-road beast.

@@ChristianStJulian absolutely! Still doesn’t change the fact its way smaller. You buy a pick up truck for its utility and space. Not because its fast. I mean its impressive its that fast but if remember this is an adventure vehicle not a sports car. I rather it be cheaper and slower if the reason its so expensive is because of the speed.
@@josedelacruz256 Your entitled to your opinion but I feel your value assessment does not apply to ALL trucks. If utility was the only valuable feature why don't we only see long beds on everything? Why do Tacomas or Gladiators exist? Because a huge full size truck it's not the best solution for all situations. Not everyone wants or needs that size. This was designed exactly as indented and as you described an "Adventure truck" for having fun and offering some utility also. It's not meant for construction contractors like the F-150. Its not for everyone but it's priced appropriately
@@ChristianStJulian too expensive. The numbers say it all. Its why the lightning and the cyber truck has so many reservations. The price was right. Numbers don’t lie. The masses also feel its overpriced to what others are offering.
@@josedelacruz256 Let's be real. We both know they got more reservations than Rivian because those were priced at $100 vs $1000. The majority of those pre order holders will NOT commit to an actual purchase especially with price changes and dealer markups. We have to remember the Cybertruck pricing was first announced in 2019 Pre- Pandemic and doesn't account for current inflation or even EV demand for that matter. Tesla will raise those prices as they have on their other vehicles. You won't ever see a sub $70k Tesla Truck (maybe the mini version). The "Pro" Lightning is as bare bones as a vehicle comes and isn't comparable to the Rivian such as the Lariat or Platinum would be.

If the track were a little longer, it would lose.
And that is the all terrain stock tires. The slowest OEM tire config. Get the one with the OEM 22s and OEM tires and you'll get close to the 3 second 0-6.
Rivian is a BEAST
Kind of scary imagining all these super fast EV’s on the road with inexperienced drivers behind the wheel.
No different than inexperienced drivers driving a TRX, Hellcat, Mustang, etc.
A used Nissan Versa will do over 80. 0-60 isn’t where bad accidents happen. It’s pulling out in front of someone/running lights, or highway speeds
The stupidity plays the main role
The acceleration is so smooth. You don’t have to worry about burning rubber off the start or accident driving forward when backing out of a parking spot.
Although might give some false confidence in water or snow.
A 3 second 0-60, 9000 lb Hummer is for sure

You mean like actual people will be using a truck for? The Rivian (and all electric vehicles) falls far short for one reason. No range.
I almost got on the Rivian order list but hesitated. After seeing your towing results and the battery drain on it. I'm glad I didn't get one. Maybe when solid state batteries developed more.
The TRX is way bigger than the little electric truck and electric vehicles have that instant torque so not a surprising turn out. But still the TRX is by far cooler to me.

@The Fast Lane Truck Super happy the TFL team will have the R1T long enough to do a lot of varied tests. For towing, the Ike Gaunlet test is an interesting torture test, but please consider doing at least two large loop tests on non-mountain pass terrain of at least 150+ miles; One big loop with a trailer between 8,000 - 10,000 but, more importantly (if you only have time for one towing loop), a towing loop with a smaller camper or an enclosed trailer (like 6' x 12' or 7' x 14') loaded to be in the 3,000 - 4,000lb range.
I submit that those towing 8,000+ lb will be better served by, and are looking at, non-BEV because the range while towing with a BEV won't be adequate. But, those that tow light trailers in the 3,000 - 4,000 lb range should still be able to get useable range our of an R1T and some other BEV pickups. We have a 3,000lb fishing boat and a 16' aluminum enclosed trailer that is about 2,700 - 3,200lbs when loaded up with ATV, dirtbikes or snowmobiles. I suspect we'd still get enough range to drive to the mountain trailheads (50 - 90 miles one way) or the reservoirs/lakes we fish (70 - 100 miles one way) and make it back on one charge with these small trailers. All of these routes do NOT pass by any public charging and so we need to make the entire loop on one charge.
In the Rivian, we'd wait for the max pack, of course, but your testing with light trailers (3,000 lb range) with the Large pack would be great information. I suspect that the majority of BEV pickup buyers that intend to tow are realistic and so plan to use only tow lighter trailers. It will still be nice to have the 11,000lb tow rating for occasional heavier trailers, such as renting a mini excavator and towing it across town, but those looking to tow longer distances at max towing are rarely considering a BEV pickup. For that reason, it would be great if the TFL tow tests are with realistic weight trailers in the 3,000 - 4,000lb range as that is a realistic trailer weight for BEV buyers and audience. (Also do loops with empty bed and max payload in bed, of course).

@@toyyoda3710 Hi Toy Yoda. I'm not a Rivian employee and not the one that borrowed TFL the truck. :) Otherwise I'd know how it would tow already. Plus, I wouldn't have borrowed mine to them. Ha. I'm happy that an employee did borrow it to them because I'm interested in the R1T to replace my wife's ICE crossover. I'll keep my ICE pickup to haul our slide-in pickup camper, for overlanding remote, and long distance travel, but a medium sized BEV pickup would hopefully be able to tow our small trailers (3,000lb fishing boat and 3,000lb enclosed trailer) which my wife's ICE crossover can not. Would be great if the R1T, or another medium sized BEV pickup in the future, can do light towing and still have the range to make it to, and back from, our various reservoir and trailhead day trips.

I will admit that Rivian has some neat features and looks to be well thought out. But that TRX puts a smile on my face every time I hear it roaring down the drag strip. Most interesting thing about the Rivian vs Tesla drag race was Tommy’s face when he went off track. Otherwise it was just two soulless computers in a completely uninteresting download.
The guys with the buggies said the same thing about the Model T. I mean the Ford couldn’t even eat an apple or be unhitched to go to town on its own. Times change.

The Rivian R1T is super impressive. Seems like they have executed better then Tesla in their early days.
How so? Rivian parent company has existed since 2009. The r1t first debuted 4 year's ago now.
Early reviews on here and the rivian forums show the truck has many similar issue's to any new startup.
Panel fitment issues, lagging ui, features that don't work as advertised. Doesnt hit the promised charging speeds the list is quite long. 🤔

Until they deliver over 250,000 vehicles a year, they have not executed anything. It’s easy to design an EV, it’s VERY VERY hard to scale production. I do hope Rivian will be able to deliver millions or vehicles (the more EVs the better), but it’s not going to be easy… for a company that has existed since 2009 (just a year after Tesla), they have not delivered much. Yet.

@@tallll70 There is a video on youtube where a regular guy (not a Rivian worker) got his R1T delivered and had a professional garage wrap the vehicle to protect it and the build quality of the vehicle was pretty good. He found a couple issues, but nothing as bad as what I have seen from Tesla.
Rivian vacuum cleaner is smaller and faster since electric hits you with instant torque but TRX looks tough, cool and scary to be chased by!! I opt for TRX all day every day.
Please test the R1T 0-60 with their quasi launch mode. Hold the brake, floor the accelerator, & release the brake.
Might help increase the reaction time for head to head races as well!

Just goes to show you how fast that eco boost f150 with the tuner is because it had a 0 to 60 time of 3.9. That's a 3.5L truck with a $600 tuner which made it almost as fast as a 80K truck that isn't nearly as capable in term of everyday use.
Apples to Oranges guys. The Rivian is an awesome truck as is the TRX but, different animals entirely. Almost all electric vehicles have the ability to go extremely fast for a very short distance before the “run out of juice.” The dodge can do that 0-60 all day long. The Rivian… gonna need a recharge or at the very least a long ride with lots of brake regeneration to replenish the battery voltage. Love em both!

I'd venture to guess that the Rivian would do better for repeat drag races than the TRX would. You use a lot of fuel and don't recover any of it.

The be fair that runway length does play right into the hands of electric veichles. Had it been 1/2 mile or even 1/4 mile the story might have been a very different one :P Lots of fun watching these but I do wish the length of the runway had been longer so one can enjoy a bigger spectrum of a race ^^ Great job as always regardless of this =D

I wanted a TRX and held off after hearing a comment from a very serious auto critic who raved about the performance of the TRX but it was his last comment that stopped me in my boots. The critics final comments about the TRX were "if you have the money you to can own the last of the dinosaurs"! Wow I thought do I want a dinosaur?
Great job, I'm only here for the tests, not the details. I guess stopping that truck is different than accelerating it. Even with regen on full, wow.
They have either 4 or 6 piston (can't remember which) front calipers.
Stopping distance is limited by the tires, not the brakes. Off road focused tires suck at on road performance.

TFL needs to find a better drag strip for testing (with more room to stop) and I think the Ram TRX could catch up with the Rivian at a mile. This track is way too small for these tests.
The TRX will never catch the Rivian over a mile because the Rivian top speed is 115 mph and the TRX is 90 something mph

@@gondorian1006 Colorado elevation likely killed the TRXs performance as well. High elevation puts ICE cars at a disadvantage.

TRX is limited at 118 only because that is legally what it can do on its tires. It also is telling that the TRX was closing the gap in the middle of the race. I'd love to see these on an actual track.

The Rivian looks amazing. I hope they can ramp up production, maybe ill get one! It looks just as good as was promised.
I admit the rivian is a hell of a truck but as a truck guy and need something for hauling lumber, IMO I'd give up half the acceleration and torque for range. Also a bed wide enough to put a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood in.
I'd also forgo all the goo gaws and jimmy jims for range. I'd be ok with analog gauges, manual seats, fixed ride height, the only real options would be a/c pwr windows and locks, cruise. I don't need a massive touch screen, knobs and buttons are fine for me.
Great video guys! Not really a surprise who won, but it was still really fun. To all those below who are saying things like "let's see who wins in a distance race", remember this is the 1st generation of EV trucks. At the rate the technology is advancing gas/diesel vehicles may only enjoy that advantage for a short time. Enjoy clinging on to that thin advantage while you can because it likely won't last long. As a farmer and F250 Powerstroke owner I can't wait to NOT have to pay for diesel fuel any more.
I don’t think EVs will be replacing heavy duty trucks anytime soon. Not until they can get heavy towing sorted out. And when they can get battery life to last longer. My iPhone needs a new battery in 3.5 years! Although it’s much cheaper than a whole Tesla battery.
@@nycad2484 dude they are literally starting to replace SEMIS with EV versions. Think a 350 dually is gonna somehow hide under the radar?! 😂 the drive unit in the rivian in this video will easily go 600k + and is designed for 1M miles. How much does it cost to replace a diesel engine?
@@mattbrew11 yeah I’m sure semis will be replaced with EVs. Maybe local delivery trucks but definitely not cross country. They would most likely be hydrogen fuel cells if anything. And to replace a battery have you watch the video where the guy blew up his Tesla because the battery replacement was like $20K? So way more than a diesel engine replacement. And how many charge cycles are these things rated for? 500, 1000, 2000? Because battery’s don’t last forever. Their chemical makeup physically degrades to the point where they won’t hold a charge.
@@nycad2484 I own a big company. We just had a diesel go south (and @ 120k NO LOL) and total cost to replace the fuel system, engine and the emissions garbage it wasnt much less than $20k AND it was down for over 3 weeks. That more than doubles the expense for me as the business owner.
A battery pack replacement is a 1 day job. Id take that 100/100 times especially considering I get to skip most of the fuel cost, 90% of the maintenance cost and replacing brakes nearly forever

i think both are big investment, however in 10 years, the EV will be somewhere in dumbster, and trx will hold it value and run strong.

And during the course of those 10 years I dare you to calculate the amount of $$$ spent filling up with gas and regular maintenence costs vs all the costs of the Rivain. I can guarantee you will spend a lot more over the lifetime of the TRX rather than the Rivian.

I seen a Rivian on I 40 through Texas panhandle the other day. Looks nice 👌. I also seen the TRX a few times...has a big ass 😄 still looks nice though. ....and seen the electric Hummer in Michigan i69 testing at night. U can see the hummer blue lit grill from so far away.
The electric vs gas drag races I’ve seen are kinda whatever at this point. It’s obvious the electric motor has quicker acceleration. But EV vs EV, now that’s more interesting. Going to be exciting to see all this new electric vehicles go against one another in the future
800hp Ram vs R1T would have made more sense. Entertaining nonetheless.
Guess it's just me but I find EV racing boring af. It's like watching two computers compete to see which can load Windows faster, not much to see and very predictable after the first time. There's no wildcard aspect like you have with ICE cars.

That went about how I expected lol. Can't wait for the towing test, if it has acceptable range and charge time things are going to change in the pickup truck world.

An executive of Rivian towed his personal Shelby Mustang on a trailer while moving for 2700 miles. He had to charge 31 times. More than two days sitting at a charger. That's with a trailer with zero wind resistance. They lost 62% of range. Imagine the loss towing a 20 or 30 foot RV wind sail.

I rode in a Model Y performance and then last summer got to ride on a track in an R1T (lucky intern). It felt faster than the Y, but I wasn't sure if I was remembering correctly. Really cool to see that it can be, if not is, faster!
Tommy, the problem with an all electric truck which claims to tow 11,000 lb is the range of the truck goes down by about 80% when towing that heavy, so the tow rating is useless.
I wish a manufacturer would come out with a plug-in hybrid pickup. I want to drive 24 miles to work on electric power. I could re-charge the battery while I work.
When I want to tow my 6000 lb Jeep several hundred miles, I would be able to run the the truck on gas. Best if both worlds.
The real issue is that’s the worst of all worlds for complexity and longevity. You’re combining two distinct technologies into the space for one. The hybrids out now will be looked back on as the used vehicles to stay away from.

Like when the Tesla showed up on drag strips the jaws hit the ground again. Sad to see T-Rex defeated but it is a new era in motor sports, and the electric motor era is going to see some crazy numbers.
But gotta admit we all gonna miss that v8 and v10 power sound and the whistle and roar of a fine tuned diesel. Still love the muscle car Era. Ram brought that back now its only silence and speed from here on out 🤦🏾♀️
