Adam Savage's Comprehensive Map of Middle Earth!

  • Adam shares two posters that he just got into the workshop: a replica of the papyrus map of the Shandor Mining Company as seen in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, as well as a print of a comprehensive map of Middle Earth that Adam actually compiled and designed years ago! It may actually have been one of Adam's first proper prop replica projects that he shared on The RPF!

Adam, you are an earthly Slartibartfast. For those unfamiliar, He was a character in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Here is a quote from his Wikipidia entry: "Slartibartfast is a Magrathean and a designer of planets. Next time Adam heads to the UK, he should approach the Bodleian Library (Oxford), they have most of Tolkien's papers. Along with real world period maps of the real shire that Tolkien based the shire upon (Worcestershire/Gloucestershire/ Oxfordshire)
They also have/had early printing presses in one of the basements that are still used.

    • @zeruzio1345
      @zeruzio1345 Рік тому

The UK isn't real, it's a fictional land invented by C S Lewis for his Narnia children's stories. Lewis and Tolkien were room-mates at the university of Wisconsin where they studied business administration. While there, they decided to collaborate in inventing a mythical land with a rich history and complicated monarchy and that is how the idea of a "United Kingdom" was first formed.

ADAM: You need to make (or buy, but you'll have more fun making them) something called MAP WEIGHTS. These are used for various kinds of large documents, especially scrolls, but in my (limited) experience in rare-book collections, they're always called map weights. They consist of what amounts to bunches of lead shot stitched into barbell-shaped leather pillows. One side of these "pillows" is then covered in some extremely pure (i.e., totally untreated but durable) cloth that is also very soft; I believe certain kinds of raw silk and cotton are usual, but I'm no expert. You should, for a map like this LOTR map, have at least 4, but 6 would be better. You keep them in a box where they don't gather dust, and then you use them to weight anything like this map scroll. Honestly: this is a wonderful One Day Build, and you will I suspect thank me when (I hope) someone on your staff reads this and points it out to you, because you're going to have a whale of a time making these things -- and then using them.

Wow, thank you Adam for posting this! This brought back a very familiar memory. I too started a map back in high school, that would be the early 80's. We read the Hobbit and I sourced every map I could find. I worked on it a little bit over 10+ years and used calligraphy pens. Any mistakes could only be repaired with bleach. The charm is definitely in the imperfections, burnt edges and true weathering, as It has traveled many hundreds of miles. It did get scanned, just in case, but my original is sacred.
As a side note, I even contacted the Tolkien estate to see if I could make copies and share them. I was turned down. This was just prior to the movies, so no wonder I was declined. Still have the letter, lol. Fun times!

That map reminds me of the one I made of Britannia from the Ultima games. Similarly to Adam I looked over the versions of the maps from all the games to synthesize more details than any one of them would have. (in the end I decided mine was in between Ultima 6 and Ultima 7) Instead of hand placing the features by hand I wrote software to do hierarchical poisson disc distribution. To keep the text and the symbols looking consistent (as if they had been drawn with the same pen) I made a custom font then spent a lot of time positioning the labels including a lot of manual kerning. One thing I was particularly pleased with was instead of using a typical text halo (which has a very modern, drawn on a computer look) I removed , moved, or altered the features underneath to make a gap for the glyphs. That took a lot of time and meant that I couldn't go back and alter most of the labels but it was worth it.

If you have a bunch of posters/wall hangings, but limited room in the cave, here's an idea: instead of putting them in storage, frame them and rig up a display rack (kind of like malls in the 1980s had for displaying posters) and have it mounted so one is always visible, with the others "flipped up" or otherwise out of sight. For "going the extra mile" effort, rig it so it auto-rotates the displayed poster each day.

I've loved the LOTR since long before any of the movies came out (even the animated ones), and one thing I particularly loved was the maps. I read the Fellowship of the Ring in paperback, and the map was so tiny and poorly printed that this is what led me to buy the trilogy in hardcover, with the large maps like this one at the end of the first two books, and the closer view of Gondor and Mordor at the end of The return of the King. I didn't have the skill, nor the funds, but I fantasized at the time, about making a large tapestry of the wider scale map, with the various paths followed by the members of the Fellowship traced out in different colors.
I find it wonderful that these original maps were drawn by Christopher Tolkein, and their accuracy, when compared to the text, is phenomenal. Christopher, of course, went on to continue the (multi-volume) compiling of his father's work after J. R. R. died before completed an English 'translation' of The Silmarillion.

The Ghost Busters map looks so cool. I was surprised to see cuneiform writing on paper, as in ancient times it was actually written on clay tablets in Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Hittite languages. The Middle-earth map is wonderful, I'm so envious! Good to see you in a video again, Mr. Savage, it has been a long time since I watched you on MythBusters, I really enjoyed and miss that show.

The trick to fitting more maps in than you have wall space for, is by keeping the excess in a map cabinet. This allows you to pull out a drawer with the map when you need it. The drawback caused by finding a location for a map cabinet, is that it takes up space, which you already had preciously little off.

Great LOTR map. I've seen the movies, but not 6 times. But I have read the LOTR books 6 times as well as the Hobbit, Silmarillion, Lost Tales, Unfinished Tales etc.

Iron Crown Enterprises did a really excellent job taking the Tolkien map and adding more depth for the Middle-Earth Role Playing game (MERP). They also did a MERP world map (the Peter Fenlon Map) for the game.

Make a double sided picture frame with a glass back panel as well, so you can hang it backwards to show off the letter and other thematic accoutrements.

You should make a map board that hangs on the rafters so you can push a button and it lowers down so you can look at it then you can raise it back up.... You can even hang maps on each side to save more space. 😁👍

I vote for either the pull down map idea, or one of those displays they use for posters in stores, basically a bunch of frames on hinges that you can flip through, like a big book attached to the wall

🤔 That Ghostbusters map, on a felt backed frame, with space for the letter - with the tube either on a mount, or hung underneath. Now that's a one day build...!

I too love maps and especially Lord of the rings when there is a lot of extra detail and drawings not strictly map related. So , wanting the best I set out to make my own and have put it aside for 3 years when my house burned down but I still have the tracings I did on 8.5 by 11 inch paper so as to make a giant map on ticking cloth, which can support pencil portraits of some of the main characters around the edges and Seas.... Galadrial, Gandalf, Elrond, Bilbo and Frodo and of course a nod to Aragorn and Thoren and perhaps lastly Smaug, disguised as the iron mountains... the ideas never end.

I don’t have the ability or time to make something like this, but I just started making a couple picture frames to put the Middle Earth maps I got in the 75th Anniversary Edition of Lord of the Rings and I’m really excited to get them on the wall.

Very nice. I love maps like this, although I'm not inclined to buy a Middle Earth one. I have a Warhammer map though (given away free in Games Workshop's White Dwarf magazine many decades ago), and there are a few other Warhammer maps out there I'd like to buy. It is a bit of a problem ironing out creases and displaying them in a 7x6 box room though...

If something good came out of the series of rings of power, it is the map that is seen for a few moments between scenes. It has a little more color and gold details. I hope they share it with the community. I also have one in my room.
