Cool video. I too like to see the homemade stuff people build. I made a long handled dumbell around 27.5" long to load super heavy for single arm dumbell deadlifts and heavy rows. I don't really have the room for a barbell set up so i went with this option. I put a baseball grip on the handle area for a better grip and used shaft collars as the inner collars. Outer collars are either another set of shaft collars or a pair of IronMind Bulldog II's, depending on the load. Can load this up to about 90kg's using 5kg plates and up to around 120kg's if i used 7.5's. You just can't get long handle dumbells that are commercially made. Either that or they are super expensive.
homemade stuff is great. any other ideas please post! i want to make homemade farmers walk so bad. i'm beating myself up over it, as buying a hex bar might be a better choice
Eh, it doesn't look like too much time. The bigger problem with screwing and unscrewing might be over time if they start to warp, but that's only if they get used with enough weight to even do that.
You could could use "screw nuts" and make the placings changeable rather quick. Or... come to think of it... maybe use just more of em' band pegs. I got a few ideas that might be useful for a home gym that might be marketable.
Based on the prices at the place you went it was a total of $52. Titan fitness sells a four pack for $70 and free shipping. For me, I would be willing to pay an extra $18 to not have to go out and buy them. Not have to assemble them, and not have to unscrew and rescues them every time I put bands on. Also, that type won’t even fit larger bands. If you have not other option than it is good but in my opinion Titan is the way to go for this. The only problem with Titan is that because they are very popular they are always out of stock or on back order.
Ryker Sharp bro pretty much all bands are the same thickness of 0.45mm... the difference in resistance is down to the width. As you can see from the video, there is plenty more room for wider bands. I would agree Titan fitness are better but they are £69 and out of stock. I just bought the stuff in this video on amazon for £20 and it should work just as well.
Great video, Alan. I'll give it a shot. I wonder if one could use it without the bar as a sort or trap bar deadlift. Or at least how well it might work.
I was going to build these but these hitch mounts are about 10$ each. And with the rest of the hardware it comes out to like 50-60$ you can buy straight up purpose built pegs for that. You can get the mounts for about 5$ at harbor freight but it is still almost the same price to just buy the real deal. Cool idea regardless though.
Only niggles: Make sure there are no Sharp corners or edges where the bands will rub against the metal, that will eat the bands away. Also, the bands are loose at the bottom of the deadlift, they shouldn't be. Otherwise there is a No band/Band kick in.
Hey Allan, love your vids, I have just started competing in Strongman and I seem to arch my back much more in the deadlift than others. I deadlift way more this way- never had any back issues. I get a lot of raised eyebrows with this technique, but I believe it is the strongest way for me to deadlift. Should I be trying to change it?
I noticed on your other DIY Deadlift Logo Platform Video you have different band pegs, where would I purchase these pegs and how would I put on platform? Thanks in advance 🙏🙏🙏
It gets heavier as you go up. Louie Simmons uses them all the time for accommodating resistance. The idea is to make your lockout stronger but also to keep you fighting through the whole lift
HI, looking at using your design. I have a power cage and Im going to have a removable band attachement. What's the set-up for the base that youv'e attached your screws into. I was looking at making up 2.5cm of OSB with me standing in the middle, but I'm concerned about the forces being applied at the edges, your thoughts and ideas are welcomed.
I recently broke my leg and I'm basically gonna have to start over again at the gym post Physical Theorapy. Should I go back to the 5x5 workout for a few months?
Hey Alan I have a question and I hope you respond. What's the difference between these bands and simply putting chains on the bar? If it's because it puts lighter downward force on the bar then can't you just use lighter chains? Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thomas Miller I've only used bands personally, so I don't know exactly how chains feel, but have heard that chains merely add to the weight as you lift the links off the floor while bands actively pulls down with greater force, so locking out the latter would work your grip more and, depending on your height and arm length, the resistance can stack rapidly while chains are pretty consistent.
Thomas Miller the tension is different. The principle is the same in that they both start lighter on the bottom but with the bands you have a force trying to actively pull you downwards. Whereas the chains are more passive and even though the bar gets heavier as it gets lifted up, it won't be trying to drag back down.
You work on your acceleration. It can be used for speed drills, since the resistance gets heavier the more the band is stretched. It will also improve your deadlift lock out. Also it works better with the leverages of the lift. At the bottom you're usually the weakest while being strongest during lockout. You can furthermore use them to work around injuries or fix weaknesses in your lifts
accommodating resistance, the band tension varies and is akin to having different weights at different parts of the lift. So for deadlifts with pegs on the floor, it's harder to lock out but normal from the floor with a full ROM, making it better than a rack pull (depending on the context).
You spent too much. Your most expensive item was only half used. You could find those cheaper. Also, bolting them thru with nuts and washers would be much stronger.
Yep, platform sits on the ground...you don't seem to think with your brain? Or you gonna go the extra effort to elevate it somehow just because it's "stronger" when you don't even need the extra strength and screws work just fine.
Vitamin B Go back to highschool wood shop. It would Not be hard to countersink the bottom of the platform. I built a platform and squat boxes, they are someplace in my channel mixed in with all my lifts like 585lb deads and other junk.
Good idea! Though I would not feel compelled to give the impression of the hooks and hardware being heavy duty, when relying on threads in plywood to take the stress. Over time, and humidity changes, I would not trust the threads to be able to withstand much pulling. But, the force is not straight up, so might be good for typical band tension for lots of years. But, force-wise, the smallest tiniest of hardware, on top of those lag bolts should be able to handle way larger forces the threads can. I'd also prefer some kind of S-hooks, if only the platform was large enough to just slightly stretch the bands. FWIW. Nobody asked me, just my thoughts watching this, that nobody requested.. Sorry :)
Not only does Alan come with the good content, the style, the editing, and the music are on point too.
Someone go to that Lowe's and tell that lady she's an Internet phenomenon
I don't even own a deadlift platform to put band pegs onto but I still liked this video.
What an ace video. I could watch Alan do anything with that backing music for hours!
I'm pretty sure that's stock UA-cam music. I've heard it on tons of youtube videos (mostly Neebs Gaming stuff).
HARDWARE SHOP UNTAAAMMMMEDDDDDD

Might want to throw on some lock washers with the lag bolts. Just for extra security
homemade stuff is great. any other ideas please post! i want to make homemade farmers walk so bad. i'm beating myself up over it, as buying a hex bar might be a better choice
Chek out my garagegym: instagram.com/fe26gym/
I have homemade farmers walk / front cary implements (but require welding)
Your bench looks unforgiving. Cool set up though!
those farmers walks are sweet. ROD loaded lol
I usually put a 1 cm rubbermat on it when benching.
:)
Yeah man, diy farmers walks would be good but for my home gym a heavy duty hex bar is just more versatile
Great idea, I store my platform upright behind a workbench this is a great low profile solution for bands.
Alan, you should use carabiners instead. They be easier to attach to the band too and would save a lot of time unscrewing the four corners.
WoodenGlasses I saw the thumbnail and came just to say this. Unscrewing those looks like a pain in the ass
Eh, it doesn't look like too much time. The bigger problem with screwing and unscrewing might be over time if they start to warp, but that's only if they get used with enough weight to even do that.
Loving the regular content Alan
dont know why im so happy watching this even when i work out in a commercial gym
I love that this is the first thing that shows up when I google diy band begs. Heading out to Home Depot now, thanks Allen!
This is oddly relaxing to watch
Alan you beast. Today I am finishing up the deadlift platform and was upset at the price of band pegs......and here you post this you legend.
2:00 millions of people 😂
Max Vikings I wouldn't doubt if this video blows up and gets a few million views lol
Marcos Baladez true true
""" MILLIONS"""
Hahah, c'mon give Alan a break man
Eventually. UA-cam is probably forever
You could could use "screw nuts" and make the placings changeable rather quick. Or... come to think of it... maybe use just more of em' band pegs. I got a few ideas that might be useful for a home gym that might be marketable.
OMG Alan, I go to Lowes too!
That amazing! I've also gone to Lowes, I even pushed a shopping cart, just like he did, and I even bought stuff!
1,998,000 people to go.
Edit: 1,992,000 now
Lord Cryozus only 1,963,000 to go
1,958,806 left boys we almost there
Thanks Allen I built my platform from your video and was wanting to add this too. Why doesn't it have your logo on it?
Home made dip bar and australian pull up bar (i think they are called parallettes)

Nice vid thanks for sharing! I was planning on doing this at my home gym but wasn't sure how to attach the clips to platform. Thanks for the idea
Great video, Alan. I'll give it a shot. I wonder if one could use it without the bar as a sort or trap bar deadlift. Or at least how well it might work.
nice job Allan thank you
Too creative. Now we can all have a portable gym. Thanks Alan. No more loading 45s in my tiny little car when i am homeless.
Was thinking about how to add this to a platform! Great video!
Good job on the gym Mr Thrall. Looks like you really try to provide good equipment and training tools for your peeps.
Damn that's a long drive to your gym. I live in Rio linda and complain about driving to Roseville. (Small towns in Sacramento area)
Paint department hype!

NOTIFICATION SQUAD COMING TO LOWE'S AYEEEEEE💪💯

Will we be seeing any strongman specific stuff anytime soon? Or will the focus stay with general strength for awhile?
Alan you gotta go to jujimufus gym
More DIY!!!

Love the soundtrack too!
I noticed on your other DIY Deadlift Logo Platform Video you have different band pegs, where would I purchase these pegs and how would I put on platform? Thanks in advance 🙏🙏🙏
Alan is the Bob Vila of powerlifting
The real question is what is your puppy's 5 rep squat max?
What's happened with the knees?
Samaker probably from kneeling down on the horse stall mats
Fell of his dragon or unicorn :D
Two years later have the screws pulled out?
Was that 2 inches off the edge?
question, what is the point of the banded deadlifts? to add dificulty at the top of lift??
It gets heavier as you go up. Louie Simmons uses them all the time for accommodating resistance. The idea is to make your lockout stronger but also to keep you fighting through the whole lift
I have an 8x8 platform with my rack mounted to it... would you suggest placing these at the midpoint of the platform, or the full 8 foot length?
Guys if this fails, you can always just stand on the band themselves while they're attach to the bar.
Alan, can you make a video on how to make a platform?
Sarcomere i think he did already
Yes he already did that.
Found it! thanks
good work ! nice idea !

Has anyone tried large carabiners?
Just wondering if they would work.
Might be quicker to attach the bands that way.
I recently broke my leg and I'm basically gonna have to start over again at the gym post Physical Theorapy. Should I go back to the 5x5 workout for a few months?

Dedra's employee of the month super quick shoutout to Lowes LOL
How well do these hold up?
Whys this better than just adding weight?
Awesome, thank you
Alan what bands are you using???
has this held up well?
i think that the owner of my gym wouldn't be happy if i came with an electric screwdriver and started doing this
but i like the video tho
Wow! You sure are fast!
This is fantastic!! selfless how to vids!
And What is the use of that bands ?
You work on your acceleration. It can be used for speed drills, since the resistance gets heavier the more the band is stretched. It will also improve your deadlift lock out.

I still don't see how the platform doesn't fly up when Alan deadlifts the bar up.
What is it useful for?
Fero Oref getting fucking huge!!!!
But how does it improve the normal deadlift?
Fero Oref when you get huge your deadlift get FUCKING HUGE TOO!!!
Fero Oref you're welcome
Alan, you still owe Deirdre a couple million views... :P
NEVERSATE SHIRT!
so inventive !!
What is the point of the bands?
This was very helpful and mich cheaper than Amazon.
Aww but you didn't say your catchphrase!! :(
Very Nice
So why do u use bands instead of putting more weights

Love Lowe's. Fun part time job too. Did you use you military discount?
Im going to that store and meeting her!!!
brilliant!!
Why on earth someone would dislike this???? Already 7 people disliked it wtf
Eric Cartman Fitness shut up alpha destiny nut hugger I see you everywhere
how many m's?
Alan's going Westside
I don't like the mounts, the hard edges on the carabiner nuts look like they'll eat at the bands.
I'm so gay for this guy.
I'm only kinda gay for him
Millions huh!? :)
Check my video on linear progression using SS method my last squats 405 3x5 LP
Dat slingshot for lifters.
I'm gonna make a deadlift platform just to do this
wtf? no "Train untaaaamed?"
awesome video though...
Do you know Jujimufu ? He must be your twin.
Save your time and order 4 commercial pegs from Titan Fitness for 68$. Just a bit more money but worth it.
Lowes woman needs ro become a meme
Why don't you hook the band on he bottom of your shoes?
You should have screamed 'train untamed!' with that woman stood next to you and watched her reaction.

ScoochBruins he only used a 1 part of the heavy duty surface mounts

Depends how thick it is. If it's 3/4" thick, then good fucking luck.

I dunno what this guy sees in Brienne
