I am SO glad you’re making this a regular thing !! Adding to my glee is the hopeful inclusion of more personal nuances such as shared in the case of “Awaken, My Love!” 😛 I’m a night owl, too; it’s either music or classic movies that breaks the dawn. Another lovely, well done (and much admired) list! My current reoccurring night moves are: The Cars - Since You’re Gone Milk ‘N’ Cookies - The Last Letter The Pop - Go! Charles Bradley - Changes Ivan Neville - Why Can’t I Fall In Love
Great choice of songs! Charles Bradley's cover of "Changes" gets me teary eyed every time I listen to it. If you haven't seen the live performance he did at a radio station I highly recommend it, one of the greatest live vocals I've ever heard. I believe he decided to cover that song after his mother died, and you can just feel the pain in his voice.
@@snoopyboobs being enamored by his soulful rendition and the arrangement choices made that sets it apart from the original, I truly didn’t notice nor do I care. I prefer covers that deviate from the verbatim of the original, even if slightly. I feel that is the making of a good cover song …at least for me.
@@vinylpuff I agree 100%. For example, take a few covers of killer songs by: The Brains “Money Changes Everything” (Cyndi Lauper colors it up ever so slightly) Richard Berry (& The Pharaohs) “Louie Louie” (The Kingsmen garage it up, the Swamp Rats trash it up - in a fantastic way, Black Flag punks it up, all deviate somewhat to perfection) Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” (Maxwell seems to spin it into a male’s perspective simply using his vocal style) or “Running Up That Hill” (Chromatics add sensuality & night rhythms, turning the original upside down - though, the original is still awesome) I guess it all boils down to preference, especially since music like most things is a subjective thing. Concerning his cover though, I don’t really care either.
Mick Ronson.....One of my favorite guitarists/people.. He also did a short stint in Mott the Hoople and several of Ian Hunter's solo records ( I love Ian)...He was also on Bob Dylan's "Rolling Thunder" tours.....Again, I am glad to see you continue this....Peace & Love...
:"Pancho and Lefty" by Van Zandt is a song I often listen to. Here in Texas the man is a legend. Great to see him appreciated outside of the Lone Star state.
Nice video Sam! I always appreciate your videos! I really liked the Townes Van Zandt song! Right now I'm obsessed with the Kate Bush song, "Running Up That Hill" ever since I heard it on "Stranger Things" . I have checked my local record store for the Kate Bush album, "Hounds of Love. But they didn't have it. They had other Kate Bush albums, but not the one with the "Running Up That Hill"
Cool idea for a video. Love it! Really happy to see Townes Van Zandt on your list. I love that album, even though some of those songs are pretty dark and bleak. Also super excited to see the Flat Duo Jets! Been revisiting them the past couple of weeks. Gotta love Dexter Romweber.
I've seen the Flat Duo Jets play at a club I used to work at in Hoboken many, many, many years ago and they were great. They would play with bands like The Gories, A Bones, or The Mummies.
Aloha Sam, I need to get a copy of Childish Gambino Awaken, My Love I'll be right back need to check Amazon. Ok, Amazon got it $ 19.13 with prime or should I wait till Walmart get it back in, on Blue vinyl 🤔... either way I need to get it , thanks Sam for the recommendation. ! Great to see someone other than myself likes Mick Ronson's "Slaughter on 10th Avenue", that tune you choose is awesome, I even enjoy his version of "Love Me Tender". I bought my first copy the year I graduated high school 1974. Ahh... the memories of putting that record album on my belt drive technics turntable listening to the album with my KOSS headphones lying in bed looking up on my bedroom ceiling at my blacklite posters.... Ahh those were my daze. Thanks again Sam, Looking forward to seeing your next video. Mahalo Ed
Cool to see the FLat Duo Jets mentioned in this video. I used to have one of their albums on cassette "Go Go Harlem Baby". But the track you played in this video sounds better than the album I had. Nice find.
If you like My War, you should seek out the Black Flag 1982 demos bootleg. It’s like a greatest hits of My War + Slip It In and sounds even more unhinged. It’s so fucking good.
Great picks Sam. I’ve always loved ‘Only After Dark’ almost sounds like a forerunner for 80’s stuff like Gary Numan. I showed that Townes Van Zandt on my ‘Perfect Albums’ video.I picked ‘Fare Thee Well Miss Carousel’ as my favourite song. That Flat Duo Jets sounds killer.
I can totally hear that early Gary Numan thing, kind of like post-glam. That TVZ album is perfect, every song on that album can stand on its own as a masterpiece of writing. I think "Waiting Around To Die" was the first song he ever wrote.
Love all yer videos and how diverse your musical tastes are Black Flag is probably my fave punk band ever if you haven’t read Henry’s book Get out of the Van you would love it .. he states that one of the reasons they took the heavy slower course in their music was because they were influenced by a Black Sabbath tape that was stuck on repeat in their touring van lol it worked out well as that is one of my fave albums as well keep your channel going so fun !!
Thanks Brendan! I actually just finished reading his Stay Fanatic Vol. 4 book, and in that one he said he owed Ginn and Dukowski into getting him into Black Sabbath since they were both huge Sabbath fans and their sound really influenced them during the recording of My War. Need to read Get Out Of The Van!
Yeah the human league covered only after dark I think it’s a single I could be wrong never realised it was a mick ronson song check out cool metro by David Johansen I Heard this around the same time
I didn't know Human League covered this song until I was doing research for this video, it's a great cover! I love the New York Dolls but I haven't listened to much of David Johansen's solo work. I've heard it's very hit or miss
Mick Ronson was important to the sound of Bowie in the 70s. Great artist. Childish Gambino has an interesting sound, mixing a lot of styles with a hiphop sensibility. Artists like Shabazz Palaces, Anderson Paak, MF Doom, Madlib, OkzHarp & Marthe Ribane also do this, a unique take on the hiphop-verse.
There are two Stones songs that I like the covers better tha than the originals. The first one "Satisfaction" by DEVO is my favorite cover song of all time. It's fricken brilliant! The second on is "Under My Thumb" covered by Social Distortion.
I agree with you on The Devo cover! I've tried getting into Social Distortion a couple of times but there is something about the singer's voice that I just can't jive with
Diggin' that FDJ track. Been on a Ronno kick myself. Check out: 👉 Michael Chapman "Soulful Lady", "Rabbit Hills", "Stranger In The Room"- all w/Mick (1970) Pre-The Hype, you can hear why Ronno struck Bowie's ear. Sessions produced by Gus Dudgeon in 1969 - right after his production on "Space Oddity".
Se que no entiendes lo que escribo, pero espero que momentos como este sigan llenando de alegría tu vida, felicidades por este gran sueño y los demás que estarán por venir.
Cool video 🔥 Always loved Mick Robson era Bowie but never checked out his solo work till now Flat Duo Jets also very cool Have several of their albums but on cd Pink Gardenia loved that track Peace ☮️
Been curious about Townes Van Zandt for years, just never got around to checking him out. Only song of his I was familiar with is "Buckskin Stallion Blues" from the Jimmie Dale Gilmore/Mudhoney collaboration from the 90s. Has a great couplet in "If three and four were seven only Where would that leave one and two?" - John
Definitely can't recommend TVZ enough! He never put out a bad album, but his self-titled is a great one to start out with. And you can find reissues that sound great for really cheap.
Hey David! I actually didn't know The Human League did a cover of this song until I was doing research about the song for this video, I really dig it. And Echo & The Bunnymen were great! You could tell Ian was still a bit under the weather from getting Covid at the beginning of the tour but he still sounded great and did a killer cover of "People Are Strange" by The Doors
Hi Sam, Hope you’re keeping well. Another excellent video, as per. Have you heard The Human League’s version of Only After Dark? Love to hear your thoughts on it! As always, all the best, Karl.
I didn't know The Human League did a cover of this song until I was doing research for this video. I like their spin on it, but in my opinion it doesn't beat the original
@@ts_vinyl Absolutely, though it's definitely one of the highlights of their second LP, along with another track called WXJL Tonight - which is brill! I suspect many THL fans like Dare best, but I prefer their early stuff. Circus of Death on their first album is another of my faves of theirs.
Great episode, Sam. Are you using a new camera? Because the picture looks sharper than usual. Also, if you take the albums out of their outer polyethylene, it will cut down on the glare from your light. Good stuff. Cheers!
Just a friendly advice Sam-- it would help if you talked about the song before you play it, instead of during the song , it is difficult to enjoy the music when youre voice is there all through it. Your song pics are on the other hand superb.
I tried the Childish Gambino thing, I can see the appeal but he's not for me, I don't mind a few tracks but I couldn't see myself listening to the entire album multiple times.
I appreciate you just giving something a listen that was new to you and deciding it's not your thing! I have more respect for someone doing that than someone deciding they don't like something before they even try it
@@ts_vinyl That's one of the things that annoy me about my friends actually, they like what they like and won't seek out anything else, they can't even get through a track if the song has a long intro, they have no patience when they listen and won't give anything a chance. I'm the exact opposite and a lot of the time my favourite albums were ones i didn't like the first few listens, its very frustrating trying to turn them on to new or different stuff, they're still listening to Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots etc which are great and I love but I've broadened my horizon and they're still staring at the same sunset they were 25yrs ago. I guess I'm just more into music than they are and would like them to come on the journey with me but they're stuck in first gear.
I like your videos and I really like your hair!
